Old AIC - great songs.
New AIC - great songs.
Layne will always be associated and missed, but I'm glad the band didnt fade away forever and is still releasing good music in their own sound and style.
the music was yours.
This band is freaking awesome.
Jerry Cantrell is such a brilliant songwriter and musician
Living Legend
He's what to Alice in Chains what Chris Cornell is to Soundgarden
Oh a german
Imagine Layne singing this song..wow.
@@nathanhageman8410 it would have more distortion but I think the harmonization would be quite similar. AIC would be much more darker and aggressive though.
alice in chains will go down in history as one of the greatest bands ever.
I agree lol
joe Costello It stands up on its own pretty well.
Modern AIC is better than just about every band out there STILL.
i dont believe in "no layne no chains"... one of my favorite songs is whale and wasp.. but i'm reluctant to try to new AIC... i hear they're great.... but i listen to old AIC to hear layne... he is... and i have very few... my idol.. when i was a teenager i got a poster of him, best of the box was always in my cd player... i dunno about you, but i feel like there is this wall around layne. like they wont tell us what we want to know,,, and i dont even know what it is we want to know... but it adds to mystery, the man, the legend.... Layne.... Happy 50th Layne.... every time i listen to your songs i'm listening to more than just your songs, I'm listening to you.... a man, who by all accounts, radiates from the vocal cords... and importantly to me..... speaks to me...
Yup absolutely
jerry Cantrell came up with the heaviest Riffs ... such a underrated guitarist
This riff is filthy! Hes the best a total genius and my idol
This riff is so epic. You cant not just sit there and slow headbang with a screwed up face. Awesome song.
Underrated? By who?
Turning in circles slowing down,
pulling against a closing out.
Pure fucking misanthrope and angst.
Hail the mighty Chains.
Few bands come back harder than ever after a frontman's death. But Alice In Chains did it.
henri crousteau yeah only problem is some fans are like but its not alice in chains anymore they just hating on greatness lol
this band has 2 front men thats what makes them so good it seems Duval is less a front man than Jerry it seems now tho and b4 it was Layne as tha main guy but he just took over considering Jerry was the main song writer it only makes sense to have him take over as tha guy didnt like the hair cut tho lol
Just imagine layne staley 's voice on those tracks.
I agree with this :d
That they did
Thankfully we still have Jerry around to keep writing these awesome songs. He really hasn't lost his touch, which is incredible since so many 90s artists have lost it these days.
Jerry wrote most of the songs? Sounds like it man. Always still has that aic style to it. So much gratitude from me for it regardless
JULIAN GREENWOOD maybe i will maybe i wont
That's what age does to ya. Never gonna be the crazy kids they were. If Layne was still alive this is what it would sound like. Time moves on.
Jerry for me was always the heart of the band...don't get me wrong - I LOVE LAYNE, BUT Jerry was the fuel for AiC. I really wish that Layne was with us though...I miss him - his voice. Layne, and Jerry together - unstoppable AiC.
Dave Bryan always was the backbone of aic
This is about shutting yourself away from others, to the point it takes it toll on you. Feeling helpless as well, empty, and hollow inside, as there is nothing you can do afterwards from shutting out things around you. Definetly a tribute to layne.
Good point.
I get that you are writing from a smartphone but could you write Layne's name with a capital letter?
Plus I enjoy just watching you rant as I don't reply back. Its quite entertianing to watch.
How can you talk to someone on their language? It's not an object, idiot.
I guess english is the only language you speak you fuckin moron...
i had heard this on the radio and thought it was one of the old school Alice in Chains songs, the fact that it's post-Layne makes me realise that Alice in Chains truly does live on.
I thought the exact same thing when I heard "Check My Brain" come on the radio. I thought it was an unreleased track with Staley's vocals sounding from the "Nothing Safe" era.
The chorus is the best part of this whole song. Those vocal harmonies are unparalleled.
lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Turning in circles, slowing down
Pulling against a closing out
Easy to feed off a weaker thing
Harder to say what I really mean
[Chorus]
Hollow as a mountain
All tunneled and drilled below
Hollow as a mountain
Crowned with a cold
Blue sky
[Verse 2]
All of colors turn to grey
Don't even matter anyway
Bleeding impressions where you were tied
Can't really say how I lost your mind
[Chorus x2]
Hollow as a mountain
All tunneled and drilled below
Hollow as a mountain
Crowned with a cold
Blue sky
[Bridge]
Silence! So loud! Silence!
I can't tell my up from down
Silence! So loud! Silence!
I can't tell my up from down
All of the faces life can show
Withered and ugly, the one you know
[Chorus]
Hollow as a mountain
All tunneled and drilled below
Hollow as a mountain
Crowned with a cold
Blue sky
[Bridge]
Silence! So loud! Silence!
I can't tell my up from down
Silence! So loud! Silence!
I can't tell my up from down
thanks!
ಠ‿ಠ
For some reason I always heard crowned with a cold as drilled to the core
@@thaksjtube honestly makes more sense
Jerry always have amazing riffs
I AM THE TABLE Well, he is called ‘Riff Lord’ for a reason
GIMME FUEL GIMME FIRE GIMME TABLE THAT I DESIRE
..has amazing riffs. Jerry always has amazing riffs. Sure as fuck does, doesn’t he.
+I AM THE TABLE,
I think the letter T should be added to the LGBTQAI+ community acronym, as some people identity as Tables.
It ain't just the " riffs " i'll always been amazed at how the lyrics and melodies fit with the " riffs " and I say that strictly as a fan. Hell I couldn't play the " triangle " in grade school , hahaha but the fact even I can make and hear that type of observation should tell you something.
"Rain When I Die" 2.0...so glad these guys kept going. My favorite band.
Really is very similar and with the same heavy
The way his surroundings go up in flames while he’s looking out the view port, and the world’s lights disappear at the end is so dark. Very strong symbolism
Leave it to Alice In Chains to toy with your emotions. These guys make music like I don't know what. They truly make you wonder where they come up with stuff like this.
+Christopher Hicks From the Melvins?
Jerry's fucking a genius that's why
Christopher Hicks great description
Melted Cheese Jerry is a fucking god
Jerry cantrell
For me this song is about pain, silence, isolation, i always come back here to shout about my silence, my isolation, the pain i feel, and aic is a voice to me
I will say something that many of you may not like. After listening "The Devil put Dinosaurs Here" I must it's for me one of the best AiC albums ever. They created incredible climate, atmosphere, lyrics. I love the characterist sound of Mike's bass, slow but powerful drums and of course the mixture of Cantrell's and Duvall's voices. When they sing "silence, so loud" it brings a huge amount of emotions. I loved the AiC with Staley and I love AiC with Duvall.
Off topic but it would be pretty cool if the devil put dinosaurs here
@@suicidalsanctity6451 For many extremely religious people that is the truth.
Layne would approve
@@suicidalsanctity6451 Well, that's questionable. Read Job 40.
I still say Jar of Flies is their best, but in terms of replayability I rank Dinosaurs above Dirt any day.
Years later -I NEVER get tired of Cranking the F**k outta this track.
You can not put Alice In Chains in any genre. They have their unique sound, they are just them.
Well I'd say they are grunge metal but I still agree with you. Love their unique sound!
how hard is it to wikipedia an album to see the genres its listed under
They are there own genre
Maybe sludge metal
Cristian Gutierrez Doom metal maybe?
This is such an amazing opener to an amazing album. Extremely underrated
The longer the Covid social distancing goes on, the more relatable this video gets.
Should of been here anyway buddy. Long before the quarantine.
My stomach is so hollow, my god.
The lyrics too🤘🏽

Excuse me. Metallica is the best. Lol😏
+Nancy Tomas metallicas' favorite band is alice in chains

Layne may have vocally led AIC to stardom, but Jerry has always been the band's mastermind. Kudos to these guys still sounding like AIC.
Not many bands can move on after losing someone like Layne. Yet they've maintained the sound and kept him as the centrepiece. That's some legacy. Thank you Jerry. And God bless you Layne. My god you're missed.
Stupendous riffs, great vocals and harmonies, amazing lyrics. Brilliant band.
Layne was himself a beautiful singer but Jerry and William can still do major songs and continue to spread outstanding music. And that i really praise from AiC
A lot of people give William flack saying he's ripping off Laynes sound but that's what Jerry wanted. Plus, what happened to Layne was his own doing so why people think the band should just have ended with him is beyond me. I too think William is a great fit for the band!
+Radcoon laynes mom said keep the name going
+Radcoon laynes mom said keep the name going
Thank you. I've been saying it for years. Layne will live forever, and it's great the new generations can still experiece AIC live. The are still killing it.
jerry and William rock......period.....
You know? This song hits different after Covid, too many years of isolation and having almost zero physical contact with anyone but family during more than two years definitely changes you, i need to confess that i felt exactly like this guy very often... "Silence so loud" at an emotional level that line hits me like a truck
Covid changed nothing unless you're used to walking in fear 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@derekhawkcherokeefireI was thinking the same thing.
Whats c0v1d?
This comment deserves many more likes!
bro covid was fear hype. i lost many so called friends because my work was never shut down. to hell with them. they were desperate and looking for someone to attack for their misfortune. i kept working because my job was never closed. essential workers and all of that.
this album is definitely up there with their old albums but its a shame this wont get to all aic fans because there are still deluded fans that think the band is dead only because layne died :(
And mike…
i was one until just yesterday lol i always figured they disbanded
Their trucking loss. Not mine. I like the old and the new with Duvall.Layne is gone but I bet he would be proud of what they have done since his passing
They’re not real fans then
I've always loved this song since I first heard it going back through the albums without layne dope AF 🔥 🔥 Jerry is a bad mofo
Never forget how lucky we are to still have the legend that is Jerry Cantrell.
It's been a year and this song still haunts me. It's Alice in Chains man: dark, haunting, powerful. What more can you ask for in an awesome rock band....
I really dig the sci-fi angle of this video- the setting could have easily been an addict's struggle or a prisoner in solitary confinement (23 in, 1 out) but this setting is somehow more melancholy. The themes are isolation, descent into madness, alienation and finality. This could easily have been a social experiment to study the minds breaking point: repetition of tasks, the same food day in and out and worst of all, hope. The mutation on his shoulder is because he seems to forget about sterility- eventually he eats with and touches himself with the same gloves he's working on that wierd biological organism with- that's a big no-no. This poor bastard endures the same schedule day in and day out without any changes or adjustments and his only contact to the world is his wife who he becomes increasingly alienated from. Eventually he becomes frustrated, insane and reaches his breaking point, who wouldn't? The ending is a sort of finality- everything he knew disappears in front of him; it's one of the best videos I've seen in a while.
Solid write-up.
I think its not an addict or prisoner but it seems more like a guy in space dealing with foreign creatures and plants with yea his wife and he grows insane from being so alone then eventually burns down the space craft from inside
🤔🤔👍🏾👍🏿👍 🇧🇷
i think your observations and takeaways are strong here, but i think it happens even earlier - he is cross-contaminating his food with his experiments in the cold storage
This is one of those songs that gets better the more you listen to it
man that riff was heavy i freaking love this song. They played this live and it sounded badass.
I know Layne was a big part of AIC but you have to admit if you're still a fan they can still rock better than any new band today
This song is so underrated. One of their best songs ever!
Jerry's guitar solo is very awesome!
I can’t help but feel this song is a tribute to Layne.
That riff is mean!! love it!!
Really haven't listen to a lot of 21st century stuff... I love the classics but even without Layne, these guys still get it done!!! DAMN this is heavy!!! I loved it from the opening riff!
Gotta admit though, if Layne was in this song, it'd probably be a number one hit..
+Jacob Smith This was a number 1 rock hit. This is a different music environment sadly, but they are doing really well regardless.
and the concert is still kick ass. The talent is truly Jerry and his solo shows just that
1:32-1:36 sounds like Layne is haunting the chorus
It does!!!! REINCARNATION...
Hes still with us in a way
Yes it was Layne , wow... It sends Shiver down my spine , I'm Spooked 😨😱
Nice!
OMG
I'd love to see this story turned into a movie
+Dude with the Tunes Watch the movie "Moon"
Or "Interstellar", "The Martian", Or "Sunshine"
Dude with the Tunes Solaris
Shining.
Good idea.
As a newer Alice in Chains fan who only listened to Layne's work I'm just now recognizing how ignorant I was of how good Duvall is.
This short movie makes me think 'bout the sad and lonely life of scientists, who often devote themselves to researches that end up consuming them and keeping them away from the ones they love.
This entire album is absolutely awesome !!!!!!
This and Stone are two of the best songs Alice in Chains have ever put out.
+Joseph Bartlett Listen to nutshell
I've been listening to them for years, I was saying that they still put out some powerful tracks, on par with their work with Layne.
I absolutely love Nutshell, it's the first song I ever heard by them.
Nutshell is arguably one of the greatest songs of all time, easily the best acoustic grunge song of all time, stunningly sad it is
Listen to dirt
Joseph Bartlett i would agree with that but also add Phantom Limb to that. Thats my favorite.
AIC opened with this sing at the show I went to and I knew it'd be a fucking awesome set
yeA
Same dude
Same here, saw them last July or August. It kinda stuns you a little bit.
Same here, i had seen them in Bethlehem on 7/23/16
The opening just crushes everything yesssss !!!!
This song paints a picture in my head, you close yourself to the world around you in pursuit of something, but when you realize you have no one left, it's too late, you regret but can't undo it, you become Hollow and without purpose, it's scary, haunting and... Beautiful? Yeah, in a way
This was produced in the shitty 10's music era, but sounds totally like the 90's. Damn good !
are you saying studio 606 doesn't sound good? the hell man...
@@Stangzillaw302w new doesn't mean good
@@felipearenas97 ya? well in this case it does..
Yeah I hear ya bro. Jerry is steadily putting out killer shit no matter what the circumstances. The dude needs to be inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame.
They know what we like to hear
The guitar sounds on this song are purely amazing. The talent. The solo. The sound of those cords ringing gives me straight chills. Legendary.
Try to convince me that Hollow is not one of their heaviest songs! I'll wait. Put it with anything else they have ever done! Kudos Jerry!
ALC friggin' flat out rocks! Long live Rock and Roll.
Im in love with jerry’s riffs. This guy is abbsolutely phenomen like for me. Jerry Thanks for everything You play in my soul.
Seriously god tier. His riffs are filthy, they get me every time. Dude is a genius musician
Rock and metal are still alive and well......thank you AIC for staying true. Jerry is legendary and the whole group is AMAZING!
"Silence so loud, silence
I can't tell my up from down
Silence so loud, silence
I can't tell my up from down"
Brilliant lyrics.
Just saw these guys live Tuesday. First time. They still sound amazing, and every song was played to perfection. But OMG, they played this song, and the bass vibrated that entire venue. The Jump from my headphones to live was unreal on this tune. So damn good! Don’t sleep on AIC since layne, they still make amazing music!
freaking awesome song . That riff is so heavy
this is one of my favorite songs
6 "Hello, my dream is to be a singer, I have some covers on my channel I know is a lot to ask but could you please check it out? Please help me to come true my dream, I’ll be grateful.
The feel of this song feels so damn apocalyptic. Like if you were to use it in a video game... it would be for a boss battle that you just can't win. You are destined to lose, to die, and the rest of the world dies with you...
It's almost supernatural, how much of Layne's voice William Duvall is wearing. No one can replace Layne, but William sure can wear his shoes well, very well.
This actor is IN Jerry's dad band videos on UA-cam. This is amazing acting, this poor guy is in space and his awful wife is like "blah blah blah, Instagram, pumpkin spice, real housewives, are you listening to me? "
anyone else here doing an AIC marathon??
Since about 1991......
Every damn day since 1991
here, 3AM from Chile.
Actually I've been listening to an album a night, as you see im beginning to get to the end..
I came back to this video and found I left a thumbs down on your comment my accident; sorry about that, rock on fellow fan
Gotta love the heavy riffs and melodic melancholy
Did I just warp to the 90's??? Damn sure sounds like it! loooooove it!!
the video has a very "get born again" feel to it
This band is underrated asf
This is one of my favorite guitar songs
That song and clip absolutely kick ass.
Alice in chains the best band of the world
The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is such a masterpiece
Mother of god…
This might be their best album yet😎👌🤙🤘🤟🎸🎚📻🔈🔉🔊🎵🎶🔥
Hollow, Moon, and Dead Space. Three truly great things united by a common theme. I love it.
Everyone bitches about the new sound Alice has developed since they reformed, but I really think people would love the heavier sound if Layne were still here and was still the frontman for Alice. I mean could you IMAGINE this fucking song with Layne on vocals? It would be ORGASMIC.
Interesting to see the variation of musical genres AIC played through the years. They started with the Glam Metal, got to Hard Rock and then mixed with Heavy Metal, after they recorded acoustic Rock songs and then got to this Doom Metal sound of nowadays. Absolutely amazing, that's why they're my favourite group!
Used to jam to this with my grandma. Miss her greatly.
Covid really opened my eyes, this video is exactly how I felt throughout the course of covid.
Great song. Love their sound & guitar riffs. Stuff of LEGENDS!!!! Their music makes me HAPPY!!!😀😀😀
Jamal Sampson you sound like you turned gay or some shit
AGREED...
Yes, Jamal! Musical quality, beautiful, unique sounds, lyrics and voices that blow your mind-you can always count on Alice! Like you, their music makes me happy!! Jerry is brillant! So is William DuVall . And Layne was equally a brillant artist!!
This song sounds like the old AIC, I actually thought it was an old song at first, pretty good
Best song and video of 2013
I love you, Alice In Chains is great, I am so happy this band is still going now.
This is the best rock song of the 2010s.
Just like us trapped at home in 2☣️2☣️: Slowly descending into madness
Ikr ... Love it
Who is this actor and why isn’t he an A list Oscar\globe winner?
Lol at people who think Jerry is underrated. The Guy lived a life paid for by his own music. That’s all any true musician should ever want.
I can’t hear this, I feel it. Separation and withdrawal is real and it hurts more when your outside looking in and all you can do is hit the un audible glass to everything happening.
The one thing I always come back for in AiC is that riff...
Covid19 vibes in this video, and they managed to do it around 6 years before it struck. Only Alice in Chains.
no one talks about how well that guy in the video can act, that's actually insane how well he can portray anger.
This song has everything AIC!! Layne was definitely there with them on this project🕊️
Goddamn, this sounds so 90s yet fresh at the same time. I can't help but think of how awesome it would sound with Layne.
Alice In Chains is my favorite band and it’s so underrated by others but the history of Alice In Chains is incredible and how they lost the front man Layne Staley but came back. Jerry Cantrell and the whole band is so unappreciated
Alice In Chains is my favorite band, too. I would also recommend that you check out Killswitch Engage and Pantera. 🤟 (Sorry that I responded to your comment after a year; I just found it. 😅)
@@hollyhayes9640 i listen to pantera but like damageplan more but have not listened to killswich will check 👍
@@travisirvin7698 One of their songs was played during the end credits in one of the Residents Evil movies. 🤟
@@hollyhayes9640 which one
@@travisirvin7698 I believe it was "The End Of Heartache". I could be wrong, but it's a great song, and a good place to start. 👍 It's probably my favorite song of theirs, although I do like them all ("Holy Diver" is the next one you should check out, in my opinion.) "The Arms Of Sorrow" is a good song, too.
I couldn’t imagine being Willie Duvall. Stepping into the shoes of a ghost that paved the way for you to follow, trying to bear the legacy of a titan on your back, a titan that broke new ground and left its mark on the world forever…making sure not to make the same easily made mistakes. Having to deal with the justified pushback of doing such a thing…I’m sure even he was skeptical at first. Definitely a braver soul than I.
Sometimes, in the middle of the harmonies, it sounds like Layne is coming through the mix. I know it’s probably just Jerry’s voice that our ears are used to, but damn…you couldn’t escape those thoughts even if you wanted to. It’s like listening to a scar.
This is so a portray of modern life. They are thousands of milles apparts but it happened exactly like normal couples; slowly drifting away from each others...
This song kicks ass!!! Nice and grungy!! Dark! Then theres the killer change ups!!! Chains at their best!
This is how Cloverfield Paradox should be done!
I'm waiting for a new masterpiece of Alice in Chains in 2018
Hands down kid they are the shit. Layne spirit is still pushing for the band. Good hearts never be forgotten. When i hear Duvall & Jerry I cam hear Layne.
Working late nights while my work center is flooded with orders and my team is is severely understaffed I feel like this man. I don’t see my fiancé much anymore at the moment. I get to work and everything’s “on fire” and I’m expected to push out so much but it’s never going to be enough nor can I get ahead. I know I’m being dramatic but I feel for this guy.
This video is amazing beyond anything. My parents were huge fans of AiC and it caught on to me a few years ago! Love the album and the sound! Keep up the AMAZING work!
Still my favorite band after all these years. 80% of the music that i listen to is Alice In Chains. I hope they keep going for another decade at least.

This is one of their best songs. I can only imagine what this would have sounded like with Layne's unhinged vocals
