I didn't get into AIC until really recently when I saw them live... Every time I heard this studio version, I legitimately thought it was originally recorded with Layne. This video blew my mind, great job DuVall!
Yeah definitely, Alice In Chains got heavier with these last 3 albums. After Layne Staley died and they couldn’t rely on his voice, they went back towards the heavy melodic sound and stuck with it. I honestly don’t know if I like the new stuff vs the old stuff.
Yeah man, holy shit. I played this to my wife and 11 year old daughter who 'appreciate' my music but don't choose it and they melted at that part of the solo, as did I. Not sure a single part of electric guitar has made me squirm like that ever, and I'm a huge EVH fan.
You know it's still Alice in Chains when you can easily picture all these new songs being sung by Layne Staley. Jerry was always the mastermind behind AiC. Layne was just the voice.
Say what you want about William. The guy's got a fantastic voice, can totally bring it live, and while obviously no one can be Layne, William was the only one good enough, in the band's eyes/ears, to replace him. That says enough.
@@macethorns1168 i almost replied to this dogshit comment when i first read it, but even 9 months on, it's as dumb as i remember it being. Duvall's been AIC's singer longer than Layne now, and they haven't missed a step. Real AIC fans know what's up. AIC never died.
I really like and respect new Alice In Chains, they're still amazing, haven't sold out, and the new gritty Sludge Rock sound that they're pioneering is really amazing.
I hungout with Layne in Seattle, such a humble brother i can personally say. Jerry and Layne with the other brothers of AIC SHOULD! Have received a Grammy for DIRT, for style, original sound, harmony. Deval, is not a bandaid for AIC but the same love and compassion AIC's has always had even without Layne. They still smoke, but im glad to have had that chill time with Layne he would be happy with AIC's direction. Peace! GINO .
This is one of the meanest sounds I've heard in decades......still as good as DIRT. I saw 'em live at Lalapalooza in '93. Layne was still alive........ Man, this took me back. Split my head wide open. Loved it.
Im 16 and I'm so glad I'm growing up with Alice in Chains, Bush, and Smashing Pumpkins instead of.... ummm... whatever the heck other people in my generation is listening to. This stuff is 100% pure talent!
Look man I'm a similar age, 19. AIC is my favourite and love that era of music thanks to my dad and just my personality in general, but there is good music still being made today, you just gotta look for it cuz it's not on the radio. This generation doesnt entirely suck.
Jerry got Duvall to sing their legacy stuff but Jerry is the main singer of the new Alice in Chains. The thing is that live they play more legacy than new stuff and Jerry simply doesn't feel comfortable at center stage. They tried it and it just didnt gel.
Yes he was the original singer with these guys, he suffered from depression, and he died of long term drug abuse I believe, and he put his problems down mainly due to his parents divorcing. He had a tremendous vocal range.
@@kaijucifer3544 no. He wouldn't be. He was dedicated to the grunge. This isn't grunge. He wouldn't be proud that they took his legacy and smashed it into the ground to build up Duvalls legacy.
I can still hear Layne's voice in there somewhere. Awesome that they keep their roots down but still have fresh ideas! I think Layne would be proud of these guys.
I miss Layne but Jerry is the shit. I have never been disappointed with anything AIC has ever put out. The older I get the more I dig what they are doing.I was on the bandwagon in the 90's and never got off.We all get older and priorities change. Our tastes evolve and as should our music.I appreciate a band like AIC still being around to put out good music compared to these hipster bands that have popped up here lately.
Yeah i'm 33 now and i've loved them since the 90's....I bought this album when it came out....no regrets for sure. I always look forward to when they put out music....I know it's gonna be good.
I ve been an AIC fan since 1992 and all I can say is that all those debates about who is better, Staley or DuVall are a waste of time. I mean come on, we all loved Layney and we all were sad wheb he passed away, but this band had the courage to born again and they are still a kickass band. DuVall has the enormous mission to fill the void that Layney left, but come on, he does it amazingly !
After several years, seems like this is pretty much a shared opinion...I mean its years later anyway, Cantrell sounds and is different, and they are a different band, and their great.
Chris Portugal Yeah, I didnt even bother buying the first cd, I listened to a few videos, and I even saw them live, then about a year after that I actually got the albums and got into them, I dont mean this in a remotely sentimental way, it is great that aic are a band/thing still. Good job Cantrell.
totally agreed...of course no one could ever fill the shoes of the almighty layne staley (no sarcasm at all there, Layne is my all time fav singer), but DuVall does about as good of a job as anyone could....very admirable
as have i been a fan since 1992, i also tried numerous times listening to this " new " singer nope wasin´t good idear reviving AIC should have formed a new ban using the remaindering members AIC was to unique to mess around with in my opinion
It would be blasphemy from Cantrell to still keep name Alice in Chains if he would made shitty music, but since he is doing awesome work, he is not only forgiven but also supported from my side, and I feel connected with old AiC beyond words all this time since 90`s ... Of course music is not on same level as was with Layne but its damn close...I mean its almost imposible to fill the gap after Layne, its like finding new Freddie Mercury for Queen.. so it was smart from Cantrell to do this combination with backing vocals, together with his signature awesome riffs.. its not same as old Aic of course, but its cool in some new way, I would say he skillfully connected old with new, and result is one of best true rock/metal groups, today ! Im really happy that Cantrell made it, its almost miracle, and I wish guys all the best and to continue for many more albums! I also support new AiC cause Cantrell did not turn back to his music legacy, (like Dave Grohl somehow did, FF never worked for me) and for this he had to go through some kind of death before death, tremendous inner transformation, its easy to surppress all but he didnt, he faced inner demons, altough part of him must have died with Staley, so he is very couragous, and because of his depth new AiC is so good as is ! :)))
This , by far , the best comment I've read here. I agree with you, even with FF part. It would be nice if Dave kept in the same Nirvana style. But yeah, it's true that aic is not the sme, but they still got it!
Umm you are stupid! He created this band and has written most songs for the band. This is his band and not his fault that layne couldn't get his crap together!!
Zoran Ramzo Kamenycky Well considering Cantrell was the major songwriter for Alice in Chains right from the start it would make sense for him to still keep the "sound". Staley made his mark as a frontman for the band and occasional lyricist (the only song that comes to mind is I Stay Away). But without Jerry, Layne would still be fronting a glam metal hair band and not the AIC we know today. We will never get back Staley and that's the truth of it. The best thing any fan can do is support the band even without Staley because after all he was just one aspect of it. Jerry is an incredibly underrated artist (has been for years).
If you aren’t moved by the opening bass and drums, that guitar tone will put you over the top. 2:03 onward is next level. One of my favorite more recent tracks from AIC.

I don't want to make 'hits,' I want to make music that speaks to people on a large scale. That is my personal goal. I will make albums (like the older artists once did) and will not succumb to the BS the industry runs on (simply cranking out catchy, meaningless hits).
I have a sketchbook full of ideas. I just need to flesh them out.
Jerry is still writing some killer music. Can’t wait to see them again.
Anyone who says Alice in Chains is NOT a metal band is just clueless! This riff is heavy as fuck!!!!! LOVE this band!!!!! AIC for life!!!
the heavy guitar can be found in half their songs...........its a mix ...definitely metal
They still fucking rock, Layne would be proud.
+chocomalk yeah he would be
Yep....he sure would! Jerry's looking pretty good after all AIC has been through! They still sound fabulous!
abso-fucking-lutely man!!
chocomalk plz..save ur soul aic is the way the truth the light.listen then listen again..then again and again.u will make it child.just listen
I didn't like the new Alice in Chains for years because I didn't see how they could move on without Layne. After giving their three albums with William a real listen I can safely say that has changed.
Good on you bro....
When peeps complain about how they should have changed their name or whatever I always remind them of AC/Dc moving on with Brian Johnson after Bon Scott died.
It took me a while to warm up to the new singer. He brings his own style to the table and it is not a bad thing.
I didn't give it a fair shor either, because Alice in Chains is my favorite band. I had to let go of Layne though, and listen to the new stuff as it is. It's still great, and I like that William doesn't try to copy Layne.
That's maturity on ur part
Same. I wasn't ready. Making up for lost time now.
Crazy how different Jerry looks with short hair and without his beard. Super nice guy, saw him in concert last weekend and he was super engaging with the fans
I’m SO glad he grew it back! He doesn’t look like Jerry without his long hair!
@@lorimulkey8423 I think he looked pretty hot in this video!
@@laurenrobinson9219agreed. I think Jerry would have to actively work at not being sexy and even the it probably wouldn’t work. His eyes…that gaze…so much power. 🔥
Goddamn Alice in chains is straight up metal. Jerrys tone has always been phenomenal!!

Songwriter: Jerry Cantrell
Before you mock Jerry's haircut, you must ask yourself: can I write as well as this guy? And then, when you answer no, ask yourself: can I even sing as well as this guy? And then, when you answer no, then you shall not mock Jerry's haircut. So it is.
Mike just forgot to write the reminder on his bass, that's all
I thought he looked like a badass with the new haircut.
Yeah it's just hair, right pff
@@richshaver3962haha I read it in Jerry's voice xD
This is the way
This is the only band in the entire world that gave me the same kind of goose bumps twice: with Layne and with Will. No BS!
Ever heard Chris Cornell sing Black Rain? or Slaves and Bulldozers?
The guitar riff gives me chills every time I listen to this. It's so heavy, pure & emotional
Mike killed it on this one, the bass is awesome
Arkei95 You are fucking right.
And incredibly simple.
Who said it has to be complex to be good? Smoke On The Water is iconic, and it has a riff based around a 4-note blues scale.
William Duvall pulling that weight. Cantrell wasn't gonna lay down his talent for tragedy, it gave him a reason to keep AIC alive.
Damn, I love that deep, heavy, sludge riff. You can just literally feel it coming out you.
It’s a shame they don’t play more AIC on the radio.
They even play rock anymore ? What radio station?
@@robertrodent8881 99.9, KISW. Lots of grunge and rock, and occasionally the better bits of modern music.
Oh they do at my station, I recieve it via internet tho as it's not in my region.
Don't hear it much on SiriusXM Satellite radio either. Love AIC 💞
Thats because modern radio ((commercial )) is a shit palace of numbness, its about corporate $$$$$$$$$ making & nothing else, familiarity, blandness, safety, comfort, sterility, $elling you shit you dont & never needed, its not about creativity, riskiness, exposing great talent, if you want that listen to community radio, propbably internet radio (( which I haven't heard )) or just do the ol fashioned thing & buy it, go to your friends houses, listen, share & enjoy yourselves, that used to be thing, mixed tapes shared around, people cranking it in cars, at beaches, parties etc, Dare radio play some Exquisite like AIC instead of arianda grandless !!!!
Thank you AIC for never selling out and for keeping real rock alive!
Cantrell is like a fine wine he gets better with age.
Lin Tankian He peaked at Dirt but still is very killer 2 decades later. Respect \m/
I like that Lin
You're so gorgeous and smart 😍
Whiskey I would say
Love You, Lin

Haahahahahaha
Yo Greg I wanna tell you that you're a funny man because of these types of comments on both music videos and Loudwire videos. You're a cool dude.
I didn't get into AIC until really recently when I saw them live... Every time I heard this studio version, I legitimately thought it was originally recorded with Layne. This video blew my mind, great job DuVall!
Not only is the new stuff great but these guys rock live! Absolute professionals who don't miss a beat.
Incredibly classy live band indeed.
Agreed
Agree 100% they're so bad ass in concert
Agreed. I seen them in 2014 in Roanoke, VA and it still to this day,is the concert I'll never forget!!!
Josh Drumheller wow! An entire few years ago and you still remember it? Amazing memory on this one guize!
Jerry is so badass with those Riff's
I love the analogy of carrying the stone weights, and how they show you eventually succumb to all of your issues if you don't let them go
I love William Duvall's vocals in this song.
I don't.
DUVALL IS REALLY REALLY GOOD
This is one of their heaviest songs ever.
Idk man sludge factory is pretty heavy
Yeah definitely, Alice In Chains got heavier with these last 3 albums. After Layne Staley died and they couldn’t rely on his voice, they went back towards the heavy melodic sound and stuck with it. I honestly don’t know if I like the new stuff vs the old stuff.
Listen to It Ain’t Like That Anymore, that’s heavy! Stone is cool too!
@@kimberleys2535 it ain't like that live (singles) you mean ;)
I think I'm one of the few that likes new era Alice more.
Absolutely LOVE the descending vibrato when Jerry says "Ice covered rocks still move"
What mean ICE rocks still Move?
Layne led with his legendary voice for how long, and yet Jerry has always been the mastermind behind their sound, hence songs like this.
The bass made my brain explode and eyes pop out.
That dissonant part in the guitar solo at 3:00 is amazing, so simple but makes my hair stand on end.
Yeah man, holy shit. I played this to my wife and 11 year old daughter who 'appreciate' my music but don't choose it and they melted at that part of the solo, as did I. Not sure a single part of electric guitar has made me squirm like that ever, and I'm a huge EVH fan.
That bassline is pure filth
Daddy Pobbin its a nasty growl of a bassline its great
Nice
So heavy!

New fan, loving the new and old stuff. Really a gem of a band. So badass!
Excellent “angry because COVID has ruined so much” music!!!
You know it's still Alice in Chains when you can easily picture all these new songs being sung by Layne Staley. Jerry was always the mastermind behind AiC. Layne was just the voice.
Layne was the soul, Jerry was/is the body
Together United ❣️💯❣️ Always & Forever ❣️❣️❣️❣️
Alice in Chains Forever💯❣️🙏😓❣️
@Blue Gills exactly. There are very few bands who could ever match the harmonies between Staley and Cantrell.
Love that!
I just discovered Alice in Chains. I've been missing out on great music.
go listen to the whole dirt album first
+jakeybball what the guy above me said.
That said Facelift also has some amazing tunes, Man in the Box for instance
Agree with both on top but Sap also has a lot of good songs on there.
Steve Wood u have been man
A.I.C. don't make shit albums. Some are just greater than others. Get 'em ALL.
Say what you want about William. The guy's got a fantastic voice, can totally bring it live, and while obviously no one can be Layne, William was the only one good enough, in the band's eyes/ears, to replace him. That says enough.
His voice is weak dogshit when held up against Staley, you deaf clown.
@@macethorns1168 William is a far better singer than Layne. Layne is dead, and he's not singing anymore.
@@macethorns1168 i almost replied to this dogshit comment when i first read it, but even 9 months on, it's as dumb as i remember it being. Duvall's been AIC's singer longer than Layne now, and they haven't missed a step. Real AIC fans know what's up. AIC never died.
@@madarab37 don’t get me wrong ..I love Duvall .. but let’s not get carried away

That riff comes in HARD. Duvall bringing fullness to the sound.
Alice in Chains is like whiskey for the ears. It's strong hard stuff but it goes down smooth.
I couldn't agree more!
Amen Brother ...
Well said!
What a great description 💯💯💯💯
Oh Yeah!!. Couldnt of said it better myself.👍
Yep. Nasty guitar riff. Cantrell is a genius.
This has got to be one of the heaviest songs they've ever done.
2:03 Anyone else crank the volume in their car when this part comes on?? F'n killer!!
Can’t help it. It’s a great jam
the bridge is delicious, man, you got that right!!!
Very "Facelift" kind of lick. No one does those big bends on a riff quite like Jerry.
I really like and respect new Alice In Chains, they're still amazing, haven't sold out, and the new gritty Sludge Rock sound that they're pioneering is really amazing.
*Jerry Cantrell has done Layne Staley (RIP) proud taking over lead for AIC and I'm an even bigger fan now than ever!*
Peace! GINO .
They always sound so good! Thrilled that Jerry wears his hair long again!! Either way he's a babe!
For sure! He's hot no matter what, but his long hair is glorious!
That guitar and bass tone is so killer.
That main riff is so heavy and nasty sounding. Jerry is amazing.
This is one of the meanest sounds I've heard in decades......still as good as DIRT. I saw 'em live at Lalapalooza in '93. Layne was still alive........
Man, this took me back. Split my head wide open. Loved it.
You cannot put this in the same time zone as dirt lol
Nobody can put a song together like AiC, man. I can never get enough.

Look man I'm a similar age, 19. AIC is my favourite and love that era of music thanks to my dad and just my personality in general, but there is good music still being made today, you just gotta look for it cuz it's not on the radio. This generation doesnt entirely suck.
This song fuckin rocks Alice in Chains is the best
Jerry's riffs are so fuckin heavy and groovy. AIC and Lamb of God will forever dominate.
FUCK YEAH \m/\m/
why does the media and so many people say that William is the new singer when it's clearly Jerry?
Jason Sanders I totally agree. They show Jerry singing majority of the time
Have you listened to their cover of Tears by Rush? William does lead vocals on that song and it's amazing
Jason Sanders when Layne was alive Jerry did most of the clean vocals where as Layne did the harsher sounding vocals
Jerry got Duvall to sing their legacy stuff but Jerry is the main singer of the new Alice in Chains. The thing is that live they play more legacy than new stuff and Jerry simply doesn't feel comfortable at center stage. They tried it and it just didnt gel.
he sings the verses and jerry sings the chorus
This sure does rock. I think Lane Staley would be cool with this.
Yes he was the original singer with these guys, he suffered from depression, and he died of long term drug abuse I believe, and he put his problems down mainly due to his parents divorcing.
He had a tremendous vocal range.
Ken Moss he prob wouldn't be cool with u misspelling his first name though.
Juanito Alimaña I'm sure sure you're right. My apologies to Layne Staley. RIP.

##06/09/2022---That is true of all post Layne AIC songs. Did you ever wonder why that is?---
I miss Layne but Jerry is the shit.
Best comment here! Well said sir!!
Yeah i'm 33 now and i've loved them since the 90's....I bought this album when it came out....no regrets for sure. I always look forward to when they put out music....I know it's gonna be good.
Preach! AiC can still bring it!
Its extremely hard to believe that this album is over a decade old. Man the years are flying by for me now. And im in my early 30s.
Chris Portugal
Yeah, I didnt even bother buying the first cd, I listened to a few videos, and I even saw them live, then about a year after that I actually got the albums and got into them, I dont mean this in a remotely sentimental way, it is great that aic are a band/thing still.
Well said mate!
Zoran Ramzo Kamenycky Tako je Zoki srbine
AIC is Jerry. It always has been. This is Jerry's band. Jerry IS AIC.
Bass in this is filthy, stunningly monstrous riff as always,Grunge is well and truly alive and kicking
If you aren’t moved by the opening bass and drums, that guitar tone will put you over the top. 2:03 onward is next level. One of my favorite more recent tracks from AIC.
