i simply cannot get this song out of my head . it's hauntingly beautiful, dark and heavy. it's eerie and gorgeous and memorable and everything i want in rock music - it's classic Alice in Chains. Layne would be proud.
As much as Layne contributed to this band, Jerry and the others have always been equally as talented. I honestly don't think Alice In Chains can make bad music.
Jerry started the band, and Layne and him harmonized pretty much every song. Layne didnt contribute more than anyone else. If anything less with his absence and drug abuse.
Layne himself actually admitted that Jerry is the brains behind Alice In Chains. He started the band before Layne was in it under a different name (I believe Alice 'N Chains - maybe Alice 'N Chainz, I can't remember), and he also wrote most of their songs. For example: "Would?" is based on the name of Andy Wood, who passed away of an OD before the band got big; and "Rooster" is based on Jerry's Dads' experiences in Vietnam. The album "Black Gives Way To Blue" was written nearly a decade after Layne passed away. This band is like, 85% Jerry.

I haven't liked their albums after Layne's death. This one sounds a lot like Dirt and I actually like it because of that. It's probably me being nostalgic, but that's just my opinion. If you like the other albums, more power to you.
You people focus on just the lyrics, but I'd like you to interpret the music video. Think about the children's shows you watched when you were a child. All the commercials you saw. Think: were you a subject to programming? Were you taught to live a certain life? Were you taught to think in a certain way about things through these "children's shows"? Watch some episodes of those shows you watched in your childhood. Ask yourself, do you see any symbolism that is questionable, any innuendos, things hidden in plain sight? I bet you will find something that will interest, and perhaps, disgust you. Consume, consume, consume.
***** When i was a child i was taught never to hit girls, because they were girls. The girls in elementary knew this and kept hitting the boys because of that. Programming is alive and well in this society.
+Masque Rade YES! Babies learn who and what to smile/laugh at or fear by watching the faces of those around them. From the beginning, we learn who/what we like or dislike just by watching the expressions of those around us and watching television is no different. There are times when a traumatic event can lead to a fear of someone/something, but in the vast majority of things it is strictly programming.
Agreed. Do you happen to study psychology, especially developmental psychology? You come across as someone who definitely possesses psychological knowledge. I am myself just getting started and I think the field of developmental psychology lacks in analytic & careful study of the unconscious mind at a young age. Television is a tool of programming to an extent I think. Advertising and carefully placed symbols in various movies and TV series' are things to be aware of
I've listened to Alice in Chains every now and then over the years, but I never really cared for them that much until I heard this. This song just made them one of my favorite bands.
Well then you missed out. They're far past their prime. Their original lead singer, Layne Staley (also one of the best voices in rock history), died in 2002. They're still GOOD, just not GREAT as they used to be.
ParkerKligerman177 Unfortunately, Layne had other plans rather than appear on this album. Not the result of a tragedy, but the result of choice. He chose not to appear on this album when he killed himself. A decision to which he was so committed to that it took him years to do it - He rode that horse all the way into the ground. Stop living in the past. AIC is only getting better with time. And now that they've got a band that isn't in and out of rehab they're releasing albums on a regular basis again.
Zyxomma Never said that Layne's death wasn't his own fault. I agree that he was the one that made the choices he did and as a result he suffered the consequences. However, AIC may get better with Duvall in the future, but they'll never be as good as they were in the 90's. Duvall just doesn't have the raw, powerful, distinctive voice that Layne had. It's actually hard to even describe Layne's voice in words because it was so unique, there's really no other vocalist you can truly compare it with. In addition to his amazing voice, he also had an intense, energizing stage presence. More so in the early 90's AIC concerts, you can see Jerry and Mike feed off of Layne's energy when performing live, resulting in some of the best live performances I've ever witnessed. Layne was truly one of a kind and because of it, AIC will never be as good without him. Again, these are just my personal opinions, and I'm always willing to agree to disagree.
Can’t believe this is already eleven years old. I remember when my dad would play this in the car all the time when this first came out. Amazing song tho Layne would be proud 🙏🙏
There is so much violence, competition, consumerism mixed messages during daylight tv. You should care what your children are learning. And the same goes with having Religion as a teacher. That's the basic meaning of this video. Some would never get it.
@@daltonowle1599 we're not all like that, in fact, its a small percentage. Just like every situation where people say "i'm not this, because....." Instead of actually putting in your own work, you just follow the crowd. Now, back to Chains.
I remember the first time I ever heard Alice in chains, 2013 at Download Festival and my god hearing them live made me a die hard AIC fan, I remember getting home after and listing to this album all the way through, then listing to all their albums, criminally underrated and under appreciated
Alice In Chains is one of those bands that their meanings are so deep and confusing, yet you can feel the vibe of the song after the very first listen. They've always been a little twisted, with and without Layne. I've only listened to this once, but this song is obviously anti-religion. So if you're religious, just leave if you're butthurt. Don't get into a fight with multiple generations of fans over the internet, it's a headache on both ends. I think the meaning of this video is that evil can be hidden in the most innocent perceptions. Even children's shows are a little bit corrupted. Nothing is 100% innocent in this world, and the fact that children are more open minded and persuadable make it especially difficult to keep evil out of the world. No matter how malevolent a presence something might have, children will still blindly accept whatever they hear because they're stuck in their own little worlds where everything is okay and danger is non-existant. Bottom line, evil is everywhere, and here to stay, whether we like it or not...
The Children's Show is clearly metaphor for religion. Similar to the viewer base of children's shows, mich of religion indoctinates children early on, stewing fear within them ("The Devil put dinosaur bones in the groun!"). That innocent children's show/religion lives something dark. That's the gist of the song, unless I missed something?
i don't think the song is anti-religious necessarily but i agree with the last paragraph. the song goes "no problem with faith, just fear" as in its not about hating people who believe in religion but the fear-mongering and threatening messages that are spread by people who claim to do it in the name of religion. or in the name of something else or saying they're going to "protect the kids" by teaching them the "correct" way and obviously doing that has alterior motives to get the kids who don't know any better to believe in what you tell them. and the video is showing that the real thing to be scared of isn't the consequences of being bad or what these people are saying will happen or the "devil" but the people who are saying those things themselves and their influence is what is actually scary.
Honestly. I wish Layne was still here and WIlliam DuVall was an addition to their band as a singer and guitar player. I feel like Layne, Jerry, Mike Inez, sean, with the addition of William DuVall would just make AIC even greater than their days in the 90s. This is good but add Layne with Duvall and have them alternate lead vocals, AIC would be unstoppable.
I love this band more than life itself. Listening to this song - it's like going back to the 90-ties, when we didn't have an internet and we had to listen to one great cassette over and over again. It was the right way to enjoy music - nobody was hurrying anywhere, the next new album wasn't waiting for you just a click away... And the music was good back then. The same as videos. The same as this song and this video...
Wow, this song really makes one think for sure. Jerry knows how to write some brilliant lyrics, and that hook for the verses is just haunting, has that Arab-esque feel to it too. Great song, makes me so happy knowing Alice in Chains hasn't lost that edge one bit.
I'll admit, I love Layne, and for the longest time I thought AiC couldn't carry on without him. I wasn't ready to accept that they were still going, and I saw them as dead because Layne was gone. However, I have come around, and I plan on supporting AiC, because they're still fantastic. I appreciate Duvall and am sorry for any unfair comparisons he had to face and how people thought he was trying to replace Layne. He wasn't, and still isn't trying to dethrone or replace Layne. Duvall is his own person with his own identity, and I appreciate him. I'm glad this band is still going.
Obviously, david flemming, a fellow commenter below, misses the point completely. This was excellently executed - and I'm not generally a fan of music videos. Hats off to A.I.C. for having the temerity to make this vital document in indoctrination through the macabre and nefarious long-term motives. The children were used to illustrate how early in our lives this evil manipulation starts. I got the chills. YIKES!!!
Freedom Unrestricted Well stated. Mr. Flemming's post elicited many replies - which is good because needed conversation is spurred on a diabolical subject. He's a good man for wanting to protect children, even though he didn't realize that A.I.C. are actually doing just that with their audio/visual statement.
Besides of the obvious methaphorical meanings and well executed making of the video, i was left very unconfortable after i watched it for the very first time, thinking about that maybe the images have some subliminal message behind, just dont know... Anyways, love to AIC, one of the greatest...
Oskar Toledo Yeah, I'm uncomfortable every time I see it and that's good. It keeps me on my toes. A.I.C. is helping our world out in my humble opinion. It's great that they have you as a fan. Thanks for your reply.
Erik Espinoza THAT comment was completely ignorant, please try your hardest not to perpetuate racist idiocy. For God's sake, let's enjoy the music without spewing venom every chance you get. This song speaks deeper than most even realize. Most "think" they understand it after a thought or two but you really have to delve into AIC and this album and song to really start to understand. Incredible track, my friends!
And that's the best type of music. From Aesop rock to Alice in chains. And I fully agree with your rendering of the song, it's ducking awesome and you have to listen over and over, even though you can easily feel the vibe.
I probably listened to more songs of AiC from these new albums than from the old ones. It's like a small, but powerful, comfy heart that still beats after almost remaining without any breath. It beats cleverly, softly and it hurts to listen to these songs that somehow feel incomplete, but independent at the same time. I can't explain better than this, I love feeling incomplete when I listen to these songs...
Travis Linton Before I started watching this I read your comment and was like "well how bad can it be?" but now, Yeah you where 100% right... this is really fucked up.
the video is perfect, controversial, gross and real, very different from the ones you can see of anything in these days. the lyrics are damn good, and the music, damn... AIC sound as dark as it sounded in the 90's in this tune... the final part of the song where jerry and william scream "liar" is the perfect culmination of one of the best pieces of work they've done since layne's gone. thank you AIC for keeping rock music alive and well.
This is a wonderful comeback for the band! I wish that their angry angel Layne was still alive, but I'm glad the band is still able to make wonderful music.
Every time I listen to a (to me) new song by AIC, I am a bit afraid, that maybe this song would not be as great as the ones before.... So I just look at iits title for a couple of days or weeks. without clicking on it. Then, when I finally get myself to listen to it.... OMG, these guys are geniuses. I've never been so overwhelmed by any band, and believe me, I have several hundreds of albums at home, collected over the 30 years I'm listening to music. So much wondering, how I only found AIC just recently! Have to catch up on it now.
Jerry is one of the best songwriters of all time, nobody should ever be worried about music if Jerry is writing it. Black gives way to blue is one of the greatest comeback albums of all time.
This video is sooooo 90's. A) No TV 5 miles outside a trailer park looks like the TV in the video. B) Kids don't watch TV on TV, they have Kindles, iPods, etc. C) Kids don't watch kids shows, they watch NCIS, CSI, and Law & Order: SVU. D) Kids shows are shot with green screens.
How am I only JUST seeing this. Love this album, but this is a GREAT music video! It reminds me of movies that have just come out like Late Night with the Devil and I Saw the TV Glow, both of those films felt like extended ALICE music videos. fuck dude.
So many things happening right now in my life and, after watching this video I think I'm gonna break down, it's so perfectly disturbing. Thanks AIC, for making me have deep feelings again...
One of the greatest things about AIC is that they've always stayed true to their sound unlike a lot of other bands...we need more bands with balls!!!!!!!!!!!

***** It's always refreshing when somebody "Gets It" & has the brain to interpret. Dumb people shouldn't be allowed to comment.
***** When i was a child i was taught never to hit girls, because they were girls. The girls in elementary knew this and kept hitting the boys because of that. Programming is alive and well in this society.
*****
I agree that it's feminist propaganda, but it still happened though.
ParkerKligerman177 everyone is entitled to their opinion. Personally I think this song is better than rooster.
Even with the unfortunate passing of Layne, Alice in Chains has managed to still be an awesome band. Jerry Cantrell is really doing a great job.
"Religion as a teacher" THIS, THIS IS WHAT'S WRONG!
Some ideas in religion can really ruin a kid's life.
very true...good ovservation
Fk67Lg the hypocrisy and holier than thou attitude of Christians is why I’m an atheist
@@daltonowle1599 we're not all like that, in fact, its a small percentage. Just like every situation where people say "i'm not this, because....."
Instead of actually putting in your own work, you just follow the crowd. Now, back to Chains.
That was refreshingly and unexpectibly a profound experience. Last time I experienced that was listening to Dirt in high school.
this is so underrated video by AIC fans also, onli 1mil views, deserve 7 at least
Agreed 100%. Unfortunately, this is a nation of religitards. I don't think many of them would dig the message of this song so much.
Anonymous5253 No* And that was the goal. Seemed to have worked
I remember the first time I ever heard Alice in chains, 2013 at Download Festival and my god hearing them live made me a die hard AIC fan,
I remember getting home after and listing to this album all the way through, then listing to all their albums, criminally underrated and under appreciated
I don’t really think this song is anti religion
But you’re right
I'm religious, but I think the song raises a good point, of how even something meant for good can be corrupted.
Shit nowadays kids shows are completely fucked with a weird agenda. Evil all 8n that shit.
The Children's Show is clearly metaphor for religion. Similar to the viewer base of children's shows, mich of religion indoctinates children early on, stewing fear within them ("The Devil put dinosaur bones in the groun!"). That innocent children's show/religion lives something dark. That's the gist of the song, unless I missed something?
i don't think the song is anti-religious necessarily but i agree with the last paragraph.
the song goes "no problem with faith, just fear"
as in its not about hating people who believe in religion but the fear-mongering and threatening messages that are spread by people who claim to do it in the name of religion. or in the name of something else or saying they're going to "protect the kids" by teaching them the "correct" way and obviously doing that has alterior motives to get the kids who don't know any better to believe in what you tell them. and the video is showing that the real thing to be scared of isn't the consequences of being bad or what these people are saying will happen or the "devil" but the people who are saying those things themselves and their influence is what is actually scary.
I love that "umm wuut?" confused look on the boy's face during the bunny head sequence.
I had internet and CD's in the mid 90's...
I was a sophomore in high school when this album came out, still one of my favorites in the AiC discography. Time sure flies
I haven't heard much of the new Alice in Chains albums, but this song really makes a statement. Wow, I'm borderline amazed. Good job AIC!
This sick song fits perfectly with this insane video. Excellent AIC song.
This is one of the clearest 'Alternative Doom Metal' songs Cantrell has ever composed, he should do this more often.
Wow, this song really makes one think for sure. Jerry knows how to write some brilliant lyrics, and that hook for the verses is just haunting, has that Arab-esque feel to it too. Great song, makes me so happy knowing Alice in Chains hasn't lost that edge one bit.
No words for how much I respect AIC.
The band just gets better and better
This is AIC so where the hell are the millions of views?
Trevor Philips sadly Rock is gone my friend
Trevor Philips the same place all these wannabe ghetto fools are
Trevor Philips Hey Trevor!
Off bitchin about how it's not the same because Layne is dead.
The beginning riff always reminds me of I can't remember and love hate love
There's something very cathartic about the second half of this music video, I love the imagery and chaos
YIKES!!!
Find it ironic that Mr. Flemming finds the same things disturbing as those the video is trying to portray. At least someone gets it.
Oskar Toledo Same!
This is exactly what happened on the set of Barney and Friends 😃
wut??
The Devil put that dinosaur here
Hahahaha! Good one, Kayne. :D
Clipe perfeito. Música perfeita. Timbres e cores na medida certa, imagem e atores excelentes. Uma obra prima.
reminds me of love, hate, love a bit
You are so damn right man.
Yes, especially in the beginning of the song. The opening notes...
Yeah, Jerry Cantrell is a genius.
shut up u black (x
Erik Espinoza THAT comment was completely ignorant, please try your hardest not to perpetuate racist idiocy. For God's sake, let's enjoy the music without spewing venom every chance you get. Just try it people, I still have faith in humanity, but it's becoming more difficult with trolls spreading negativity behind the anonymity of a keyboard.
The kid's reaction at 2:40 XD
Alice in chains knows how to reinvent their selves everytime they make an album
Where did dinosaurs come from?
Answer : Satan
HAHAHA WTF
yeah that's an actual Christian response in regard's to dinosaurs,as their time line in history doesn't match up to their young earth claim,WTF indeed!
suckseedorsuckeggs usually non religious opportunists rich or poor
God is real and dinosaurs arent the creation of satan (XD)
+George Carlin you're dead, so you must be telling the truth. Wow, internet in the afterlife!

The devil put clowns here.

John Wayne Gacy
crusty21 Shawn from slipknot would disagree
crusty21 the devil put trump here hahahhaah
Dominus Noctis Note that Trump's association with the Devil was not disclaimed. Unless Dominus is the breed of simpleton that thinks "No, Obama" is anything other than a rallying cry for weak-minded idiots.
5 months later.... Someone decided to finally tell you how fucking arrogant you sounded.
yes, as a conspiracy theorist, I came across deeper and hidden meanings ...
Man I don't know. Seems like a pretty straight forward diss track on fundamentalist Christians. What are you getting out of it?
This should be rated A....................................................For AWESOME
I love AIC. Though I Gotta say this video was fucked up.
Not in a bad way, it's just a fucked up video.
Travis Linton their Get Born Again video i think is a lot more disturbing
Travis Linton Before I started watching this I read your comment and was like "well how bad can it be?" but now, Yeah you where 100% right... this is really fucked up.
Travis Linton They've still got it.
I think am the guy of the video
Derek Gornall they most definitely do.
the video is perfect, controversial, gross and real, very different from the ones you can see of anything in these days. the lyrics are damn good, and the music, damn... AIC sound as dark as it sounded in the 90's in this tune... the final part of the song where jerry and william scream "liar" is the perfect culmination of one of the best pieces of work they've done since layne's gone. thank you AIC for keeping rock music alive and well.
And Laynes voice yeah hey hay yeah
One of the darkest riffs i've heard from Jerry.
Pd : bass line is amazing too
This is their best song. Powerful, creepy and heavy.
it's a travesty the band has never played this song live!! One of the best!!
Great song. Jerry is one of the all time goats.
God damn. This is one of the darkest music videos I’ve seen. Nice job on giving me the chills
Beginning always sounds just like alice in chains love hate love
This is what American kids will soon be learning in science class.
Good morning, and the kids of Europe too...
The fear and crying of that lil baby girl... I loved it.
This song really slaps, like I had the sudden urge to listen to it out of the sudden after years.
Same here.
It’s a fantastic song, still in consistent rotation for me years later
@@puppetmaster8551 It's this damn chorus. Damn you Jerry for making such good music.
@@c2e.7877 yup. He’s my favorite songwriter and lyricist ever, chorus on this track is addicting as fuck. Guy is a true genius
D) Kids shows are shot with green screens.
except they totally did thirty years ago, and that is when the setting of this video depicts
How am I only JUST seeing this. Love this album, but this is a GREAT music video! It reminds me of movies that have just come out like Late Night with the Devil and I Saw the TV Glow, both of those films felt like extended ALICE music videos. fuck dude.
Love Hate Love + Angry Chair = The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
Also "I can't remember" from the first albums gives me similar vibes
I got to have a real fucked up mind, but i think the video is masterpiece...
tons of symbolism in this video . . .
I'm really getting into this album ! Sadly we don't have much grunge left and aic has kept it alive!
One of my favorites music videos ever made!
So many things happening right now in my life and, after watching this video I think I'm gonna break down, it's so perfectly disturbing.
Thanks AIC, for making me have deep feelings again...
Im so proud you guys!!!! KILLING IT JUST LIKE THE 90's!!!!!
Weird video, cool song, but all I wanne know is where they got evil Matthew McConaughey?!
That is hilarious about McConaughy
Another great one from AIC.
cant watch vevo, the vids don't show, i get sound
Bad Wobble damn it's a good one too.
One of the greatest things about AIC is that they've always stayed true to their sound unlike a lot of other bands...we need more bands with balls!!!!!!!!!!!
Although I respect Duvall as a singer and musician, whenever I hear that intro is just like I’m automatically waiting for the sound of Layne’s voice to enter...it can’t be helped, feels like something’s missing 😢 still great song
Classic alice in chains. This band never sold out. Love this band dearly man
The government hates this song
Republicans hates this song
@@MatheusFernandes-xf4zm no they don’t
I hope we all understand the message parsed through it. Legendary band. Long live AiC
You can NEVER bury Layne! I can't help but not think about the guy and the impact his voice had, every time I watch one of these new aic videos! R.I.P. My Friend, addiction is a mother fucker, especially when the body gets the shakes.
As good as they were with Layne? Debatable. The fact that new AIC is better than no AIC at all? 100% true.
Jarrod Wexley I personally like them better without layne not glad he died tho
@@DarthRevan823 Same. Not a popular opinion. But Jerry Cantrell was always the driving force behind and the band and continues to be. Layne was a great vocalist, but his range and tone was almost totally replaceable.
Rapportus5 i agree
@@DekkarJr thanks for taking the courage to write a VERY unpopular opinion.
You know, I am thinking of it now, its true... He really didn't have a great range.
The tone though.... I think was pretty unique.
Maybe I'm wrong.
That being said, I thought this was Layne... Maybe that proves your point🤔
I often feel New AiC>>>>>Old AiC.
Just can’t stop listening to this, it’s just so good and beautiful. It’s amazing
Jerrys like an energizer bunny.....he just keeps "GOIN N GOIN"....MY MAN!
A masterpice, This song and video has a great message.
I like how the bass and guitar work together in the verses
