One of the major lessons we learned about living in tiny spaces during our time experiencing van life in Europe, is that you need a comfortable place to work. And for Lou, that means a standing desk. After much debate, we realized the best place to create a workstation for him would be where the original Nav Station was on the boat. We needed more storage for our computer/camera gear and decided that this would be the best place to build that.
Building a desk from scratch in a boatyard with minimal tools was definitely a challenge, but David and Lou rose to the occasion. I am so happy with how the final product turned out and I know it's going to be mission-critical for us once we get the boat on the water full time.
Would you have considered taking out the traditional nav station? Do you think our plan to use digital maps is a good one or should we have stuck with paper charts?

I truly admire your young enthusiam. The nav station looks very good, and you've finished it off to look really good. The way you put it together doesn't bode well in the long run though. OK, I know I'll get complaints that this is another negative comment and I'm prepared to take critism for it, but I do have years and years of experience. So here's my advice for projects for the future: 1) Never, never use steel screws and fasteners. Most of what you used is going to rust. Rust is next to impoossible to clean and remove. Plain or plated steel anything should not be carried onto the boat under any circumstances. When rust bleeds into fiberglass or paint, it's ruined. 2) Use epoxy paint or at least marine grade paint. Varnish, if it isn't formulated for marine use with UV resistant additives won't last a year unless it's buried deeper into the boat. 3) Look for other UA-cam channels to see how it's done. "Sail Life" is a good example. 4) Go sailing. Stop all your projects. You have a lot to learn and you won't get that in the boatyeard. Don't do another project until you have your first year crusing. I'm looking forward to following your progress.

Agree. Should always go sailing first to see what works and what does not. Those drawers are going to go ballistic during a rough passage. The fabric will rip out. You need locking mechanisms. My boat, the drawers are heavy and require lifting upwards to open them.
Not sure if you butted wood against the hull (which is a no no without some material to allow flex and movement - generally if support will be glassed in with spacing without 90 degree corners) otherwise during flexing the hull will stress against it and cause future problems you really do not want to deal with at sea.
Boats and vans are not the same.
I wish you guys the best but please do your homework.

@ No, they're not idiots and it's unfair to characterize them in that way. They should be encouraged to do research before beginning a project, considering the amount of available instructional material. One thing I like about the channel Sail Life is that he's constantly asking advice from his TouTube followers. Other excellent channels are "Project Atticus" and "Sailing Uma". One last thing .. Vans are two dimensional, Boats are violently three dimensional. I think other than your personal relationships, there is little that you can translate from van to boat. One more last thing from a sailor who has lost partial vision in one eye ... don't do anything without wraparound safety glasses. See Amazon Dewalt $10.

WELCOME TO THE SAILING COMMUNITY! ❤
Everyone has an opinion and loves to share (probably a lot like van life), the majority have positive intent (despite the capslock or multiple exclamation points). Nothing hurts more than seeing a fellow sailor learn lessons the hard way! That being said, your learning attitude and commitment to action is just a speck of the mindset you'll need to succeed at sea ❤

It should be OK. Lots of sailboats don't even have a nav station. Basically they wanted more storage and a standing desk for when at anchor or in a marina, which is where a boat spends 90+%of its time.
Plus, for everyone complaining, the galley has no seat either. Do you say it will be impossible to cook while sailing? No. Just like I can cook a stew while sailing without a seat, they'll be able to look at a chart while sailing without a seat. If it's really pitching, you wedge yourself into a settee with your laptop /chart and do your work.

The video is so well edited and produced, and your personalities are so fantastic. Lovely people. It's difficult to see some of the build choices on here, because things like steel fasteners are rookie mistakes that are easily avoidable with just a little research. Usually a group of naysayers are just noise to be ignored -- but in this case listen to the crowd. This build was substandard. A mistake, but then again, what is life without making some mistakes? That's how we learn. Subscribed, and looking forward to all future videos.

Just got tuned in to your channel because of the sailing aspect. You guys do a great job with the videos and I really appreciate your presentation. A couple of boat things I’d like to point out. A level is almost useless on a boat unless you have done a bunch of work to set up level lines etc. while your project may be level, unless you took great pains to make the boat level.....I’m sure you can see where I’m headed. Also it looked like you used regular construction screws. Think about all of the boats you looked at with various rot and corrosion. You need to use stainless fasteners, even in the interior. What worked on your van, probably won’t always work on the boat. I hope you accept my comments in the spirit of wishing you great success and long years of sailing this beautiful boat.

Leveling on a boat can be done pretty easily using a Bevel Box. Its a small device often used for table saws, that measures an angle and crucially has an adjustable 0° Angle. So you can zero it on a surface you want everything to be level to.

If you get tired of that support rope you could swap it out for a pair toy box mechanical hinges. They are dead easy to install. That would hold the Nav Station big lid open safely. Most of those type of hinges will also allow a soft close to help keep the wood from getting banged up on closing. Just a thought for the future. Cheers!

Adagio Borntrager I don’t honk it’s about being negative. This couple and her brother seem like really nice people and I think most want to really see them succeed. The issue is one of experience. Halberg Rassy is a fantastic boat builder. Experience is a great teacher. If you’ve never been on a sailboat even in calm water, you can’t understand what living on a boat is like. There is a reason there are grab rails everywhere on that boat.
I’m not even saying they shouldn’t have converted the Nav station. I’m just saying that until you have some experience with the boat, making drastic changes is not a recipe for success, It is a prolog to regret. Just having to move the companion way stairs to get in some of those drawers is going to get really old really quickly, I hate having to do it on my boat just to check the engine oil.

So far are the replies I’ve got have been fairly on point, one thing I should have included is the position the occupants would be standing in the boat relative to the boat. Say the occupants are standing in the galley facing forward (to the bow of the boat) it is then pretty easy to adapt to the notion of the boat moving side to side or at an angle. With the way the standing chart table is being built, the occupants would be facing the gunhaul (side of the boat) and so adapting tot hat notion would make chart work nearly impossible

Plywood faces and edges should be sealed with epoxy coatings, wood should be glued up with epoxy, all fasteners should be stainless. Regular screws rust out really fast in a marine environment.

Looking forward to following your progress, and let me know when you're in Denmark so I can give you a tour of my boat!

Just a thought... perhaps some kind of removable plastic shield (washable) to clip to the new desk between the stove top and the future home of computers/electronics. Grease and food spatter will for sure be landing on that desk otherwise.

It's a good job that electronics always work. Oh wait! Good luck with that. I have been sailing for 30 years and there is one thing I will tell you now. Paper is more accurate than the electronic and much more reliable. I use both but I always double check everything with the paper. You will learn. Also if you plan on blue water get yourself a sextant and learn how to use it. It is not wort your lives relying on electronics.

Great videos. Always excited for a new episode to come out. It is sad however, how many people have left comments without researching. We are in the process of purchasing a HR Rasmus 35. There were hundreds made and lots of owners have made alterations to the nav desk, mainly due to the much needed storage or the lack of space for a fridge. It doesn't take a lot to realise that this is a fair swap as you spend more days at anchor than on passage, ask any cruiser. There is also the added benefit that the HR Rasmus 35 has a second nav desk located in the cockpit area where most chart plotters and instruments have been assigned, making the one in the saloon just a glorified storage desk. So why is it not a good idea to change it? We will be doing something similar.

Niiiiiiiice!!! Pro tip : if you want the drawers to slide smoothly (which in a boat...not sure ahah) you can rub a candle on the edges, the wax acts like a lubricant and stays quite long ;)

great to see the craftsmanship and you defensively gains lots of storage however it does not really tie into place with the rest of the interior and looks a bit home made with the finish. As a boat owner i would say it has devalued the boat and a nav station while yes takes up alot of space is there for a reason.

Lots of new boats no longer include the nav station, no issues there, but with 3 people on the boat it might have been nice to have 1 seat off to the side so you're not all squished together at the table

  • @blackduck7851

Looks like a great job you have done there. You can always add a stool or temporary chair off the steps if you find standing in the boat too difficult in a swell: at least you will get a good core work out standing. Just a tip: If you aren't glueing joints I would get a wax candle and at least rub it along all the joint edges- squeaking on a boat will drive you nuts.. speaking of throw some wax on that lid opening too.

Your wood will swell due to the natural moisture you'll experience in the boat. That might affect how easily you will be able to pull your drawers. Silicone or wax might help the skids. Marine plywood would be us good product to use.
