The boat refit continues with another project, though this one is much easier than last week's Destroying Our Nav Station. When we were thinking of how to make the boat comfortable to live in, we realized that turning this hanging closet into one with shelves would help us a lot. We're not sure how often we'll be using this area as a wet locker, so we figured by putting in removable shelves we now have the option to store more items here when conditions were dry.
We still have a lot to learn and are figuring it out as we go. Luckily this solution is very flexible, so we will keep you updated with how it works once we're on the water :)
Thanks for all your love, tips, concerns, and advice!
    Big hugs,
    Dana

You might consider adding a strip of fabric over all the slats to “tie” them together in case you actually do remove a shelf you could roll it up to stow it, without having to figure out where and how to stow individual slats. We hang our foulies all the time so we always know where they are and they are easy to put on quickly without having to dig for them in some locker. Storage is an issue on just about every boat.

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 4 роки тому +4

On our Rasmus 35 we hang our foulies as well, although I have tried it both ways. We have the same exact boat and we use a small fraction of this very hanging locker which they modified in this video to hang them in, as well as hanging a couple of shore excursion jackets. The boat also has a similar hanging locker in the aft cabin for other crew. The rest of our locker is filled with latching sealed containers from the container store stacked in like Tetris with very little wasted space all the way to the top. The tiny bits of wasted space that a Tetris Master cant fill with these containers due to the curved & slanted hull are filled-in with rubber foul weather boots. As I mentioned in a earlier post, this locker has a ventilation issue and water tends to drip in from condensation forming on the window above and on the cold chainplates bolted inside and going up to the cold outside through the deck. Mold is always an issue so anything stored in here mist be sealed, plastic, or mold resistant. We usually keep the aft door off and stored elsewhere to allow air circulation otherwise the foulies will get nasty. We have a dry boat with no leaks, but humidity and condensation is always a problem
Rolling foulies and securing the roll with a sized bungie band is a quick and easy way to store and secure them if they have a "place" where they can be always found. When I did a lot of crewing on different boats I always had a backpack that I would being with me on gigs. Foulies, clothes, layers, PFD, and all my gear all fit into one large backpack.
When foulie season comes it seems they are used practically every day for weeks on end -especially when travelling every day when migrating. The ICW and coastal East Coast in October, November, December going South is one of those times. Hanging them. Even after they are dry saves constantly rolling and unrolling them no matter how efficient and slick your ditty bag packing system is.

Interesting turn in comment-style on wild we roam videos since boat stuff started happening.
More critiques and criticism than van-life videos. Also interesting how you are seemingly changing your videos a bit to adjust to these comments. In this video you ask for our input (do we need this?) instead of posing a conclusion (we demolished the Nav station!). The adjustable shelves also seems to stem from comments suggesting to do projects only once you've been sailing for a while.
I know nothing of sailing, but i'm a social scientists so i can't help but observe. Anyway. You're doing great Lou & Dana! I salute your way of creating space for the wild we roam community! : )

I noticed this, too. I think the difference is that "boat life" is more niche/specialised than van life, as it's harder to get your hands on a boat than a van, from resources, to money, to safety, to geography. It's more high stakes to be in a boat (especially open water) than in a van, so I think the experienced sailors (probably almost all new viewers) are chiming in out of a genuine sense of duty of care and a moral obligation to speak up if they fear for someone's safety, or even just a mistake that will make life hard/uncomfortable down the road. I know nothing of van life or boat life, but I love the film making/storytelling/music selections, so I would probably be here even if they were filming the meticulous removal of carpet tacks for 20 minutes :)

#1 Sailors are an opinionated lot. They also hate to see people make the same mistakes they have made or observed others make, especially if it puts a person’s life in danger. #2 smart sailors listen to and consider more experienced sailors opinions. There is nothing like experience on the water. I have seen and heard people with thousands of miles under their keel defer to a local sailor with local knowledge many times, experience is the rule of the day.

I think a lot stems from the change of environments. Boats have the specific problem of being a constantly hostile place, from carbon monoxide buildup in lockers, leaks and the salt that seeks to destroy you and everything you own. In a lot of ways I think people are just trying to guide them in a direction less likely to cost a fortune or a life in the long run.

I am in genuine awe of your craftsmen-ship and your simple get up and do it. I don't know where that particular closet was (is) located but ... What you absolutely will need is a place near the steps/doorway to the rear cockpit where you can hang wet weather gear because at some stage you will absolutely need to dash out into the rain, spray, cold or wind. (And) having a hanging place for that gear is so handy (and for footwear too) And no these moments don't always come at sea or offshore..you might even experience this need on dry dock. A sudden storm, a realisation something is out on deck that shouldn't be (camera!) and you need to go and quick. A handy jacket and boots near the exit is so handy.

Great well put together content so far. Well done! Just a comment though on your build style. Although you all seem to be well versed in putting together a road going camper van, an ocean going vessel is quite a bit different. There is a reason boat builders use expensive hardwoods like teak and mahogany along with stainless steel hardware and fasteners. Also epoxy coating instead of just household paint. In the long term the expensive materials hold up longer under the constant forces of the sea and the saltwater environment. Just my opinion as a marine technician and boat owner for the past 30 years but I am thinking you might have wanted to sail your new Rasmus for awhile before making some of the modifications.

Trust your gut and do it your way ❤️
Some people would take the boat out for some miles before doing adjustments, and some do certain adjustments before the trip.
Neither of both is right, or wrong.
So trust your intuition and I am sure it will be one heck of a boat.
I love the new spirit in the cruisers community with that van life flare ☺️

I can tell you from experience that this locker is NOT a wet locker. It is tough enough keeping the mold out of here as it is.
The port is going to leak a little, but also it is going to sweat like crazy in colder weather as moisture condenses on it and drips down into the locker. We keep one of the doors off almost all of the time because if both are left on it'll be mold city in there.
Wet foulies hang in the cockpit under the soft top. You'll eventually want at least a partial enclosure, if not a full one. Now your cockpit is your wet locker too -as well as your shower and screened-in porch outside.
We find that all if our non-foulie clothes fit rolled up and placed onto the shelves above the berths. We strung shelf-to-ceiling netting in front of this shelf area on both sides of the V-berth to keep everything in, yet still breathe. Hanging mini-hammock nets are below the shelf for more storage. If you need more clothes storage than this then boat life may not be for you.
We used containers from the container store for compartmentalizing the hanging locker. They have tight-sealing lids to keep moisture out and fit tightly into the space like a Tetris Master if you shop for the right ones that fit just so. Way more stuff can be jammed into a plastic container with a locking lid than can ever be put onto shelves.

Would have been easier and better to use a 90-degree framing square and strike a line out on the bulkhead at 90-degrees from the door panel which is already plumb. A cheap framing square should be a tool on any boat for doing any basic carpentry, or perhaps a more advanced compound one if you know how to use it.

6:44 - You have about 30-60 seconds of pliability. Don't get you skin stuck to it or you're losing the skin off your fingers.
I like how this mod lets you back out if you have to. Bear in mind: velcro bonds get stronger with time and vibration. If it's very secure right now, it will be hard to remove later after the boat has rocked a lot and you have loaded and unloaded it and the wood has swelled and contracted with moisture.

A thought to consider might be using stuff that holds up well to the harsh and salty conditions aboard. One question - I see you are using a water ruler a lot. I take it you've made sure that the boat itself is aligned precisely on the ground? Then I guess all one can do is hoping it's not biased to either port or starbord when it gets in the water :)

I'd normally suggest you actually spend some time sailing on a boat in varied weather before making any changes (other than essential repairs/upgrades) as what you think you need and what you actually need can be very different. You obviously know better.

I thought this too, but I guess you need to consider that their actions are probably heavily influenced by the fact they want to do things that will generate interest, and make interesting videos. I guess they could just produce multiple videos of Dana hauling sheets, or Lou trimming the main, but they have a pre-existing audience who liked watching van living, van modification videos. So I guess you should expect more boat living, boat modification videos.

As a sailer, a yachtmaster, I almost did not watch this second video on your boat modifications after you ditched your nav station. I am glad your modifications to the wet locker are removable. If you are really going to do blue water sailing and live on the boat while travelling, a wet locker is critical. You can’t lay the wet clothes on the your bed, your bed will be wet for the whole journey. God help you if your electronics on a 40 year old boat fail.....that nave station will be missed indeed. This is not a van, this is a near perfectly designed blue water boat. Be very careful what you change if your experience is more on the tiny home side rather than the blue water side of things. The consequences of a mistake can escalate quickly to death at sea. I am fan, I love your videos, but some of the stuff you are doing to this Swedish sailing beauty are making me very nervous for you. Be careful. Get good advice from blue water sailers. Never depend 100 percent on the electronics, the fail and fail regularly where you can not get them repaired.....Good luck.

I’m interested to see this crew take to the water, less interested to watch redesigning a cupboard. I think I’ll just look out for a new video called something like “she floats”.

Bad move you guys. Wet lockers are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL on every sailboat. You could have built a boot shelf at the bottom . . . . . . and then called it quits.
