So incredible. Really glad you guys enjoyed. I think different people will interpret the meaning of this song differently but I think it is about a man that cannot commit to one particular woman but must be free to wonder.
dear brothers, wow we have enjoyed your responses to great music so endearing. we are a group of grandmas who love rock and roll. two of us were at the 1977 Oakland concert. Lynyrd Skynyrd band was life changing. None of us could even speak on the hour long drive back to San Francisco. We found your site and love how you appreciate music and talent. We suggest you watch the film "Muscle Shoals" for a real education on rock and roll. keep up the wonderful work . We love you guys,
I was in a riot in Houston in 1977 that involved about 4000 hippies, 100 cops, and Lynyrd Skynyrd playing Free Bird. Every time I hear it, I get a little memory adrenaline. Great concert before it all went to shit.
The "Free Bird" theme is like the "Ramblin' Man" theme. A guy who just has to go. "Is there more than one guitar?" Yes. There are 3. Oakland and Knebworth are both great. Oakland might edge out on sound, but Knebworth is cool, because the guys blew the Stones away - and performed on the "forbidden tongue" to close the show.
I believe this song is in tribute to Duane Allman, the guitarist of the Allman Brothers (another band you should react to). He died tragically in a motorcycle crash when he was about 25. His legendary guitar work lives on though.
You guys need to do Rush. You have talked about transitions and no band pulls transitions like Rush. Plus, as a bonus, you will be hearing three of the greatest musicians ever.

Your reaction to this song that my friends and I (along with millions of others around the world) first heard over fifty years ago. It never gets old. I wonder what other milestones the band might have reached had if key members of the band had survived that needless plane crash. The music they could have (should have) written. This song is lightning in a bottle and will never die. What a legacy. What a tragedy.
You could spend weeks on Southern rock bands from the 1970's. Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchett, Atlanta Rhythm Section, the Outlaws, Blackfoot, Johnny Winter, Marshall Tucker Band, ZZ Top. Lots to blow your mind in that group.
Three guitars🎸 Mind blowing isn't it?! I enjoyed your reaction to Freebird, you are a younger generation so I hope you can appreciate the musicianship that went into playing this classic rock song☮️♥️
There are two guitarists, and the 'live' version goes on and on so wonderful to watch and listen to. The best live version is at an English outside concert, someone will know exactly where I promise!
Actually, there are three guitarists - Allen Collins, Ed King and Gary Rossington on the studio version. You can see three guitars on the live version. The two most played live versions are Oakland '77 and Knebworth '76.
I knew you’d love this one. Had front row 1974 to see these guys will always be on my Top 5 Bands Three lead guitars one bass, piano drummer lead singer. Check out the live version really unbelievable how they pull this off live. So many GREAT SONGS !

It blows my mind to see people hearing Free Bird for the first time in their lives. You NEED to see them do it live. It's better. Also check out Call Me The Breeze.
Free Bird was a tribute to the recently deceased Duane Allman (You guys need to do a reaction to "Whipping Post"). Best live version (IMHO) is the one recorded for their live album, One More For The Road, recorded at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. The show is Oakland is probably the best live version available on video. They have a huge catalog you will enjoy: Sweet Home Alabama, That Smell, Workin for MCA, Simple Man, Tuesday's Gone, The Needle and the Spoon, the list goes on and on. Enjoy!
Lynyrd Skynyrd at Knebworth ,1976 and the live version of ''One More From The Road'' 1976 live album.. . Lynyrd Skynyrd is an album band .. You have to hear their albums from the 1970s to understand the sound they had ...
The BEST is Live August 21, 1976 at Knebworth! The guitar solo is longer and better. Do NOT watch Oakland in ‘77. People will tell you Oakland and they are so wrong. Sound quality is bad and there is a part where they edit. You want 1976 where they opened for The Rolling Stones. Trust me.
He's right guys. Knebworth 1976 & only Knebworth gives u the true Lynyrd Skynyrd experience. I live in the South & saw them live many times before the plane crash.
He's not going into the Army. The last thing you are in the military is "Free" bird or anything else. You guys have never served so I'll give you a pass. Watch some of the boot camp/basic training videos out there. The Marine Corps Boot Camp is really informative.
Being 64 years old I was raised on Skynyrd music. Lynyrd Skynyrd used three lead guitarist a bass player, piano player/keyboardist and Drummer. All three guitarist were lead quality and each had different kinds of guitars with three different sounds that in Free Bird you can hear but 85% of the solo or kinda solo was Allen Collins with Gary Rossington on the glass slide and Steve Gaines also. You should really check out the live version from the California concert in I believe 1976 or early 1977 just before the plane crash in October of 1977 where Ronnie VanZant the lead singer and leader of the band along with Steve Gaines lead guitarist and one of the female back up singers and Steve Gaines sister Cassie Gaines were killed with road manager and two pilots were all killed in the crash just after they released Street Survivor. It was a few years later that Ronnie's little brother Johnny VanZant took the band Lynyrd Skynyrd back on the road and was the lead singer and with Ricky Medlock taking Steve Gaines place as third lead guitarist. Fact is the very last album Called Last of A Dying Breed is the best they ever put out with Johnny at the lead vocal. The whole album is killer. Check that one out too.
You picked an awesome first song in your introduction to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Freebird isn't about him going to war though it's about what it means to be free, in that a bird can fly wherever he wants to go. It's also about everyone wants to be free...that's what this country's all about. Skynyrd are still legendary. The guitarist you hear is Alan Collins. Amazing guitarist. He was one of the founding members of the band. Watching your reaction is so typical of what the song makes me feel like. You just get lost in it. You feel instinctively like you're floating and spinning. It's so...hard to describe.

The problem with the Oakland live performance of Freebird is they focus more on the crowd than the band during the solo. The Knebworth Festival where they opened for the Stones is a better version. Just my opinion, of course.
Billy Powell's piano prominent in Oakland, Allen Collins giving every ounce of himself at Knebworth
Knebworth was definitely better.
focusing on the crowd was cool, i liked that one better
Your opinion is correct
The 13min live version on Old Grey Whistle Test at the BBC is the best live version
#awesome
That is one of Rock n Rolls greatest 3 part Guitar solos ever played. Those 3 guys were amazing together. One of the Best Bands of all time. Thank you for sharing your first listen. It put a smile on my face. Thank you.
This MUST be watched live - amazing performance!
More Lynyrd Skynyrd"the breeze","comin home","I need you","on the hunt","needle and the spoon","ballad of Curtis Loew","things goin on","you got that right","gimme back my bullets","Saturday night special","sweet home Alabama","what's your name", and"simple man" to name a few ☮️
Your guys reaction makes makes me so proud to be a southern American! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Same!!!
How do you feel about Saturday Night Special?
5:25 “Dude, they’re preparing for something”. No truer words were ever spoken. 😄
GREAT REACTION SIRS. THERE IS A COUPLE LIVE VERSIONS OF THIS SONG.. I KNOW YOU TWO WILL APPRECIATE...LYNNYRD SKYNNYRD, "FREE BIRD".
When the ending jam begins it's him actually leaving her....NO WAR
Please...next Skynyrd reaction should be “The Ballad of Curtis Loew”.
And the next band to check out following Skynyrd is The Allman Brothers...and may I humbly suggest “Whipping Post” as your introduction...”YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY”
cheers, loving watching your evolution
Or "Tuesday's Gone"
Whipping Post from Live at the Fillmore East, 23 minutes, don't settle for less.
@Rolling Stoneworks
Yesssss, Whipping Post for sure, this needs 1,000 thumbs up. 🙌🏻🔥
The Allman Brothers would be my first choice! Good call.
Three guitarists (Allen Collins, Gary Rossington & Ed King, who was later replaced by Steve Gaines), bassist Leon Wilkeson, drummer Artimus Pyle, pianist Billy Powell & lead singer Ronnie Van Zant.
this studio version was with Edward King. Steve Gains was a bit later.
@@josephregester7780
I stand corrected, thanks for reminding me.👍
Oh heck yes boys, amazing tune!!
He's a "player"' and he cant be tied down by one girl.
So incredible. Really glad you guys enjoyed. I think different people will interpret the meaning of this song differently but I think it is about a man that cannot commit to one particular woman but must be free to wonder.
You should listen to the band "America" song: "A horse with no name"
Three guitars guys - something similar - outlaws - high tides and green grass - rocker!!!
A must!!!
Also Molly Hatchet, as well as Outlaws and Lynard Skynard. 3 Florida bands , guitar armies.
dear brothers, wow we have enjoyed your responses to great music so endearing. we are a group of grandmas who love rock and roll. two of us were at the 1977 Oakland concert. Lynyrd Skynyrd band was life changing. None of us could even speak on the hour long drive back to San Francisco. We found your site and love how you appreciate music and talent. We suggest you watch the film "Muscle Shoals" for a real education on rock and roll. keep up the wonderful work . We love you guys,
Another epic song in this vein is the Outlaws' "Green Grass and High Tides". You want guitar solos, hold my beer.
757optm. I was at Knebworth and witnessed this live. Awesome band and they stole the show.
@@daphnethornton4829 Cool.
He is saying he has a Free spirit, & can't stay with her for too long.
I believe this song is in tribute to Duane Allman, the guitarist of the Allman Brothers (another band you should react to). He died tragically in a motorcycle crash when he was about 25. His legendary guitar work lives on though.
That’s what I always understood.
Same.
It was not written about him. They often dedicate the song to him but not about him at all
Oh you have got to see the live version ... it will blow your mind!!! I’m a old southern hippie and been listening to them almost my whole life
Bro's, Outlaws - "Green Grass and High Tides" !!
You'll, thank me later. 👌
Oh, and put your seatbelts on !!!
I've been requesting this from everyone. Good taste 👌👏8
The first band that I ever saw in concert. In New Orleans. June 6th,1974. I was 16 yrs. old. Tickets was $6.oo.
You guys need to do Rush. You have talked about transitions and no band pulls transitions like Rush. Plus, as a bonus, you will be hearing three of the greatest musicians ever.
lots of folks mentioning the live show in Oakland for a great version of this song. i saw them on that 1977 tour at Anaheim Stadium, one of the last shows they did before the plane crash. there is nothing like a live Skynyrd show...so check out all the live videos of them that you can find.
I'll probably get in trouble for this, but this was when America was great!
Wish I had a time machine...70s were the best time of my life! I'm in my 60s.
I absolutely agree 100%!!!!!
Well I'll give you at least the artist were not controlled pushing govt ideas and narratives. It obviously led to much better music instead of this manufactured crap of today. Actually some ppl disagreed and times God forbid. Yet, the powers at be learned their lessons with the amount of influence these ppl had, decided not to make that mistake again. Albums should just released by CNN now lol.
Things were getting worse then, ppl were not aware of the scale of problems yet. Took another 35 to 40 yrs of lies and manipulation.
I don't know much about American culture but yeah man the love you people had made the world what it is today (in a good way though) i really appreciate Americans but its sad seeing you guys do what us 3rd word do kill each other and divide and rule.
@@prashant_kerung_thegim0709 America was really great at one time, but we have lost our minds and are making everything worse. I don't know how we will ever get back to the way we were. 😭
I absolutely love Lynyrd Skynyrd
Great jams ...give, "call me the breeze " a listen.. It's a great "down south " jam aka a foot stopper..!😁👍 you're welcome!!
And the official live version from the album One More from the Road - they did not fade the song out - it kept building to an even more epic finally
Welcome to southern rock. Skynyrd, Allman Bros., Marshall Tucker...
"Tuesday's Gone" "Curtis Lowe" "That Smell" are some good choices.
That Smell is often overlooked, but insanely clever and jammin
@@BiffMan42 "Whisky bottles and brand new cars... Oak tree you're in my way"
That Smell pure gold
@@2869may "One more drink, fool, would drown you..."
@Mario Martin Martinez puro rock and roll!! \m/
Knebworth not far from me but Oakland, California tops i with that crowd :)
u mean this? ; p
ua-cam.com/video/QxIWDmmqZzY/v-deo.html
Actually, there are three guitarists - Allen Collins, Ed King and Gary Rossington on the studio version. You can see three guitars on the live version. The two most played live versions are Oakland '77 and Knebworth '76.
Simple Man
@@Isleofskye I agree you have to see the crowd reaction and all the girls
You guys are like watching my husband listen to an awesome solo. I love seeing pure love for music.
yes they rip just as hard live.check out the live version of this you will love it.
I knew you’d love this one. Had front row 1974 to see these guys will always be on my Top 5 Bands Three lead guitars one bass, piano drummer lead singer. Check out the live version really unbelievable how they pull this off live. So many GREAT SONGS !
Oh bloody hell!! I'm so pleased you both made it to the end. I thought you were going to spontaneously combust otherwise!😊. I love your videos and reactions. Thank you.
Proud of those hometown Jacksonville boys!🔥❤️🎸🔥
Recommendation: Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son.
It blows my mind to see people hearing Free Bird for the first time in their lives. You NEED to see them do it live. It's better. Also check out Call Me The Breeze.
I was waiting for this video for a long time
Awesome reaction again - I heard this when it first came out- it still gives me goosebumps! Great job 👏
he is in a band. lives his life on the road. not the settling down kind.
Enjoy!
what I don't understand is how someone can go this long without hearing this song. it's insane
YEAH, THAT WAS A SHORT BUT STILL COMPLETE VERSION GUYS! LOLOL :) I LUVVVVVV PEOPLE'S NATURAL REACTIONS, LUV IT LUV IT LUV IT! :)
Once again you can't compare to the live performance RIP
😂😂that slow build up is so deceptive!! It takes off like a freebird and you just enjoy the flight!
My favorite band ever ....period....not even close. Greetings from the American Mississippi River valley. God bless y'all!
YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS LIVE!!!!!
