It's really funny, how many of these "whippersnappers" say . . . . . "I wasn't expecting that!" after listening to all of these 50 year old songs, that I heard when they were new.
It can't have been 50 years ago. I remember this song when it first came out and I was still in high school. Where has the time gone? Out with my knees and back!
I started saying whippersnappers when I was a teenager, just so I would remember to say it when I was older. And also because I would get aggravated at other kids. I'm in my 50s now, and it's time. Also I would practice my "old man sounds" to try to get out of physical work. And talk about my bad back and lumbago. It didn't work for me, but it was good practice. 😁 I still have a good back, so I would still be mostly faking it.

*After the plane crash in 1977, you could go into any Bar or Club in the South that had a Live Band and before the night was through, someone would always stand up and yell at the band, " Play Free Bird ".*
At the Oakland concert of'77, you can tell the crowd knew whats was coming. THIS CROWD DIDN'T. They were obviously there to see the "Stones" and didn't know what they were "in for".
Yeah people can talk shit about the South all they want, but it changed the whole world through music and these guys are the glorious proof. None of us would be listening to any of the stuff that we love so much without guys just like Skynyrd. 🤘

Dean Tait , Everyone in Mississippi and Alabama had long hair in the 70’s and was pretty chill unless you started some crap. I guarantee you a Southern boy would finish it.

That is an all-time classic and having been listening to that for over 40 years it's easy to take for granted. However, watching through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time it really makes me appreciate it again. Some of my favorite songs from Lynyrd Skynyrd are Workin' for the MCA, Saturday Night Special and Gimme Back My Bullets.
Vince I couldn't have said that better myself. I've just started watching these first reaction videos & it really ignites that spark again (not that I ever lost it for Lynyrd Skynyrd) & shows how truly great they were. I bet I've seen that video a couple of hundred times & it's just a timeless piece of music. I can only imagine the expressions on people's faces a few hundred years down the road as they hear Lynyrd Skynyrd for the first time
Great reaction video Pat! I was lucky enough to see this fantastic band live in Minneapolis before that tragic plane crash tore a hugh hole in rock & roll😪. You cannot go wrong with any of their songs Pat...they had so many epic classics😄. The thing I absolutely love about Skynyrd is that absolute powerhouse guitar sound that they kicked out song after song. If you are in the right mood, when Lynyrd Skynyrd kicks into the jam at the second half of "Free Bird", it will bring chills up and down your entire body!!! Well done mate😊. Thanks for that one💖.
I remember 1976 very well, it was an extremely hot summer. Watched this footage for the first time yesterday and was taken right back to the spirit of the time - relaxed and free. You guys will never understand what you missed, sadly!
The Rolling Stones covered up that part of the stage for their performance, it's their signature tongue shaped stage. They told them not to go on it, so during the solo Ronnie had to push them out there to make sure they were seen by everyone and to take a dig at the Stones for making such a demand.
Good, for him for doing that.. These guy's 100% truly deserve that honor.. Piss on that Fat Tongue!!! They kicked ASS on that Jam!! I can watch that over & over..Gives me Goose-Bumps!!
The live concert version that I first heard this song, and is my favorite, is when Ronnie Van Zant said “Play it pretty for Atlanta”. Have you watched their OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO of “Still Unbroken”.
That was really cool watching you enjoy that for the first time and being totally surprised. I first heard it 40 years ago and it blew me away too! Still does;)
probably the best live band, any of their albums1973-77 are just full of classics, their awesome live One more from/for the road, great simple straight lyrics that tell stories about the common people, 4 great lead guitars, Ed left in 75 Steve was his replacement, both sharing the same birthday Skynyrd wasn't a jam band, was a hard working band, spending countless hours on getting the songs right, all of the solos were written and arranged to be played almost exactly every night, very little variations through out the years in length and changes, even their producer Al Kooper was amazed by the level of restrain, focus and hard work,
Love that concert ,Ronnie, sings my favorite Song, Searchen❤ never gets old, some people doent like to see me at the local bar,Why I'll slide a twenty in the juke box, and chow down on food for the soul❤😂🎉

Pat, did you catch (during piano solo) Ronnie saying they were playing this for Duane Allman, guitarist and brother of Gregg Allman of Allman Brother Band that pasted away.

I love, love your reaction. I wasn’t old enough to see the original lineup of Skynyrd, but did see them 1987. Free Bird is their Encore song, so they make it loooong.
I’m a drummer. I wanted to play the guitar but I couldn’t find anyone to teach me left handed. Then one day a guitarist asked if I would sit in on the drums for his band in a church. I told him I had tried, but couldn’t play the drums. He asked if I was willing to learn. I said sure. He sat me down, asked if I was left or right handed. I said left, but right foot dominate. He told me to put my left hand on the hats, right hand on the snare, right foot on the kick, and count to four. He showed me a simple beat and then the band played every song to the tempo I followed by watching his foot tapping. It wasn’t pretty, but because no one in the church made fun of me or told me it was bad, I continued learning. 30 years of drumming later and I’m still partial to hearing a kick ass guitar heavy song.
'Tuesday's Gone' and 'Ballad of Curtis Lowe' are also great songs. They are my favorite Southern Rock group, their last concert was in the town where I'm from/live, Greenville, SC. Great reaction by the way.
You are the fourth person on UA-cam who I have seen reacting to Skynyrd for the first time. By miles you are the best and most appreciative and also sound the most articulate. The others were American blacks who couldn't even pronounce the name of the band properly and one who referred to them as "He". Thank you for a very genuine reaction. I'm 65 and saw Skynyrd in 1977 live in England and was blown away in seconds. I think my friend you will now research them and very very soon admire them as one of the great southern rock bands they really are. One perfect reaction and one where I understand every word you said unlike the Yanks speaking whilst missing out every other word in a sentence. Get yourself a rebel flag NOW!
Other bands during the time would get pissed because the audience would start yelling "Free Bird" . . Google it This is the real deal , Real LS, Great Reaction PG ! Lynyrd Skynyrd - Saturday Night Special - best build up to a guitar solo in rock history , find the original
This is an absolute epic of a song. Although it later seemed to be about the lost members of the band it was originally written about the passing of Duane Allman. There are arguments about whether this is the greatest guitar solo of all time but it is without a doubt the greatest twin guitar solo ever recorded.
@Gordon Mansell, right on target Gordon ☺, however, it's 3 guitars in solo at end-Allen Collins, Stevie Gaines, Gary Rossington plus Leon Wilkeson on bass.
This was written in 1969 or 70. They were playing it in clubs before they got their first recordind contract. While it was often dedicated to Dwayne, it was not about him.
I was born and raised in Jacksonville Florida, hometown of Lynyrd Skynyrd so they are of course my favorite band. One song you mat want to review is "Workin' For MCA" or "That Smell". Glad my fav band is still appreciated.
Thank you! Anything Lynyrd Skynyrd is great...If you just happen to get (what us Southerners)say a wild hair up the derriere pls react to "The Rossington Band" song "Light a 🕯️ candle"" this band was started by Allen Collins & Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd(survivors of plane crash 1977) but later Allen was in a car accident but survived that (barely) he was in a wheelchair. What he could not bare were the death of his wife & unborn child in a bathroom at movie theater she had taken their daughter there & miscarried & died. It was too much & hell at that point he had enough sorrow. Such a tragic ending for a good man. He could play the shit out of a guitar too. Early Skynyrd songs was Allen's iconic licks on his guitar. Please, try The Rossington Band you gotta hear Dale Rossington sing lead. She (yep a she named Dale) Gary's wife. Plz, don't criticize her name. She could probably whoop yo ass..only kidding.. I think this is my favourite song ever. A great driving song on the motorway/freeway. Still listen to it in the kitchen on my surviving cassette player when what I'm capable of cooking takes long enough to hear all of it! (Shame about the ads). I've not finished watching yet but I bet you'll say "Wow" sometime. Yup, "Wow, wow, wow, Jesus Christ, wow". Good on ya.
That band ALWAYS PLAYED 4 US. They were UNREAL! I ONLY WANT 1 SONG AT MY FUNERAL ITS IN MY WILL THAT SONG IS FREE BIRD! I LOVED THEM GUY'S WITH ALL MY ❤ AND SOUL. ALWAYS WILL. 4 EVER AND 4 ALWAYS!
All southern rock bands of that day were jam bands. In interviews I have read in the past, many say that it would be nothing for 1 song to go on 20, 30 minutes if the groove was right or the mood was right. Also if you get a chance, PLEASE check out Molly Hatchet "Fall of the Peacemakers" from 1983 (not the current band)
Actually Skynyrd did not jam. Even the guitar solos were composed. Ronnie wanted live to sound like the album. They were a rehearsed band like no other. Practiced 7 yrs, 6 days a week, 10-12 hrs a day before they got any break, and thousands of gigs. They were amazing.
I grew up in Jacksonville Fl where skynyrd is from. You grow up listening to them and as a young guy in the 80's i did not appreciate how big they were outside of our town. its always nice to see people react this way. i love these videos because we all know the tempo change and guitar is coming and the listener is about to have his mind blown. Happens every time!!!!

He supposedly said "hell, just tell him to keep it in his mouth........oh yeah, and let him know I like the stage design and look forward to using it!"
Todd Rundgren and 10cc played in between. That's why the STones were 5 hours later; they played 3.5 hours - one of their longest shows if not the longest EVER.
That whole concert at Knebworth was one of their best!
@@yvonnephillips3888 Join the club. I meant on the last part of you're post. God it sucks being old. lol
They still say "whippersnappers"? lol
I still have a good back, so I would still be mostly faking it.
@@DUCKDUCKGOISMUCHBETTER lol My wife tells me that I would be a perfect fill in for that movie Grumpy Old Men because I can play that role to a tee. lol I have the voice & that grumpy old attitude that makes it just click. As for health & back woes, being in 2 car crashes, once as a kid sitting on my moms lap & the last one that put me on the shelf driving to work, (something was in the road at night) & then having life saving surgery only after being pronounced legally dead on the ambulance ride too the hospital, lets just say my backs seen its better days. And I'm also getting along in years so that makes it even harder to get around but we do alright. We have each other & our critter who's SO spoiled of course, so I can't complain. Sometimes I'll rib my wife by shaking a magazine at her saying in an old man's voice, "Don't you get smart with me you young whippersnapper" & then we both bust out laughing. Works every time. lol
And that's what makes Knebworth so much better than Oakland.
Yeah people can talk shit about the South all they want, but it changed the whole world through music and these guys are the glorious proof. None of us would be listening to any of the stuff that we love so much without guys just like Skynyrd. 🤘
Hey I moved to Texas, then NC from L.A., yeah on purpose, too 😁 also traveled through MS, AL In 1971 with long hair and almost got killed a couple times, I had long hair. We were on our way to Rockingham, NC to drag race, lo g tow from Los Angeles. Great experience!
Tait: If you almost "got killed a couple of times" because of long hair while traveling down here, then you caused some shit. Your comment is f ing ridiculous. Sounds more like you need to check that itinerary...probably were in New Mexico or even Idaho.
Dean Tait , Everyone in Mississippi and Alabama had long hair in the 70’s and was pretty chill unless you started some crap. I guarantee you a Southern boy would finish it.
@@tupelohoney622 Exactly
The greatest southern rock band of all time. Never will there be another like em. Just insane how great they were. I grew up in South Florida in the 70's & you can be damn sure we were jammin to this shit day & night. I miss em so! ❤💔🙏
I can only imagine the expressions on people's faces a few hundred years down the road as they hear Lynyrd Skynyrd for the first time
The best song ever they are another of my favorites
With Ronnie singing honestly they don't have a bad song. If you don't believe me now you will. They're mine and many others favorite band
I was there, aged 17. Warm sunny day, saw Skynyrd and smoked my first joint. All in all a pretty good day :)
Southern rock, Molly Hatchet, "Flirtin With Disaster!" 🎸

Legend has it that the guitar solo is still playing to this day
This live version was played in London on August 31st 1976. I was born at 8:20 AM Central Standard Time on this very day.
You can always tell when a reaction to this song is honest. The same word used over and over because their minds are blown.
I remember 1976 very well, it was an extremely hot summer. Watched this footage for the first time yesterday and was taken right back to the spirit of the time - relaxed and free. You guys will never understand what you missed, sadly!
Allen Collins, nothing quite like him. Talent and stage presence unmatched!!
From the same festival in Knebworth, Gimme A T For Texas. You will not be disappointed.
Just the fact you'll never see that again
The Rolling Stones covered up that part of the stage for their performance, it's their signature tongue shaped stage. They told them not to go on it, so during the solo Ronnie had to push them out there to make sure they were seen by everyone and to take a dig at the Stones for making such a demand.
I was wondering why Ronnie was pushing his guys up there. Then again they are from the South, rebels!
Love it Pat!!
"Im going to go back and watch that again" heck yeah👍👍Good stuff!!
That was really cool watching you enjoy that for the first time and being totally surprised. I first heard it 40 years ago and it blew me away too! Still does;)
Check Out ‘’That Smell’’ Another Great Southern Rock Song by Them.
Could not agree more. Great song written about Gary Rossington.
Free Bird was being played as my brother was passing away. So always hits me hard but in a good way.
Sorry for your loss.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - The Ballad of Curtis Loew. Will FOREVER be my fave Skynyrd song.
These guys was on a nother level
probably the best live band, any of their albums1973-77 are just full of classics, their awesome live One more from/for the road, great simple straight lyrics that tell stories about the common people, 4 great lead guitars, Ed left in 75 Steve was his replacement, both sharing the same birthday
Skynyrd wasn't a jam band, was a hard working band, spending countless hours on getting the songs right, all of the solos were written and arranged to be played almost exactly every night, very little variations through out the years in length and changes, even their producer Al Kooper was amazed by the level of restrain, focus and hard work,
I'm 63 damn right.
Love that concert ,Ronnie, sings my favorite Song, Searchen❤ never gets old, some people doent like to see me at the local bar,Why I'll slide a twenty in the juke box, and chow down on food for the soul❤😂🎉
They finally made it, GOAT ❤😂🎉😢
Havent heard it ???? Off with his head says the Queen 😂 😂 😂 ....Ballad of Curtis Loew ,The Needle and the Spoon, Call me the Breeze , You Got that Right, Whats your name are some of there songs
Lol. Yeah a bit shameful I don't know it.
Patrol Gaming you do now thats good enough
"That Smell" by Skynyrd
Thanks for what you are doing/ sharing. ✌😁
Pat, did you catch (during piano solo) Ronnie saying they were playing this for Duane Allman, guitarist and brother of Gregg Allman of Allman Brother Band that pasted away.
I thought I heard that, I wasn't sure though.
Pasted? I think you meant *passed away
They melted your brain 😂 didn't they 🤘🇺🇸
Never fails, I've listened to this song a half a million times and the guitar solo stands the hairs up on my arms everytime..
Dig deep into their music! On the Hunt, That Smell, Needle and the spoon, Poison Whiskey! So very many!
Good ol boys from Jacksonville Florida ..RIP..RONNIE VAN ZANT...💝😢💝🇺🇸
They are from my hometown of Jacksonville Florida ...always hard for me to watch since i knew some of them ....so many memories.....Ronnie Van zant and his BARE FEET ... he never wore shoes onstage ...R I P Ronnie
Go Skynyrd! Go Jags!
@@kattcity GO JAGS ,,GO GATORS !!
You gotta check out Free Bird live at Oakland Collisium 1977 it will blow your mind.
I love, love your reaction. I wasn’t old enough to see the original lineup of Skynyrd, but did see them 1987. Free Bird is their Encore song, so they make it loooong.
I'm old enough, saw them in 74. From the south, The Band Of the South , Long Live Skynyrd !
James Ramey, how lucky you were to see that lineup. I’m from Georgia, myself, so Skynyrd are Music gods down here.
I'm old enough too !! I saw them in Winston Salem ,N.C. WOOT..WOOT..😎🤠
It makes my heart proud to see you react to Lynyrd Skynyrd! A huge thank you, all the way from East Tennessee!
I wonder how many people in the crowd there are tripping their balls off. My freakin head wouldve exploded.
Free Bird is how I end every party I’ve ever thrown - Just great music…period.
Other bands during the time would get pissed because the audience would start yelling "Free Bird" . . Google it
This is the real deal , Real LS, Great Reaction PG !
Gordon, you are correct, it was written and performed to honor Duane.
@Gordon Mansell, right on target Gordon ☺, however, it's 3 guitars in solo at end-Allen Collins, Stevie Gaines, Gary Rossington plus Leon Wilkeson on bass.
@@GWard-hz5wj Thanks for that and you are, of course, absolutely correct.
Nah man, they dedicated it to Duane but it's creation was before his passing.
I remember these guys while I was growing up. They were kick butt.
great reaction, nice to see you not stop the song , i was amazed wheni first heard that song in 1981, andi t was old then
It don’t get any better! Man Ronnie was a beast and wow Allen could play that Gibson! React to “That Smell”
Oh, I've been watching your reactions for a little while. I like you a lot so keep up the great work... I'm a happy subscriber now... Thank you so much. Love your 🐦 too.. Hello Blue! 👌👍🤘 Have a blessed day..💕
Bravo! Amazing that you hadn’t heard this song before given your obvious love of music. This is a CLASSIC! And one of the all-time greatest guitar solos! Another great reaction!
They could really jam back in the day. If you're liking the Southern Rock sound, you might check out The Allman Brothers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bad Company, The Band, 38 Special, and Molly Hatchet. :o) I was in the Army at Ft. Bragg North Carolina during the late 70's and early 80's so we drank a lot of cheap beer and Jack Daniels while listening to southern rock. :o)
that was unbelievable. gave me goose pimples when that song changed pace, was not prepared
I've watched at least 10 of these reaction videos to Free Bird. And they all make me jealous. I wish I could go back to the first time I ever heard this song. It's like chasing the dragon. Still gives me goosebumps to this day !! It's such a masterpiece. I'm going to see them for the FIRST TIME EVER in April.
Best live version ever! It’s all about the tongue 👅!!
Good on ya.
Looks like morning light to me. What a wonderful way to start your day!
Saying you've never heard Free Bird is like saying you've never seen the sky. Either way, you're in for an amazing surprise.
I started laughing when you said you could already tell you wouldn't like this song...lol! That guitar is CRAZY!!!!
That band ALWAYS PLAYED 4 US. They were UNREAL! I ONLY WANT 1 SONG AT MY FUNERAL ITS IN MY WILL THAT SONG IS FREE BIRD! I LOVED THEM GUY'S WITH ALL MY ❤ AND SOUL. ALWAYS WILL. 4 EVER AND 4 ALWAYS!
Ain't but one word that describes the great Ronnie Van Zant. "GENIUS"
Can't beat "Flirtin' With Disaster."
@@tupelohoney622 That one sure made them alot of money
Actually Skynyrd did not jam. Even the guitar solos were composed. Ronnie wanted live to sound like the album. They were a rehearsed band like no other. Practiced 7 yrs, 6 days a week, 10-12 hrs a day before they got any break, and thousands of gigs. They were amazing.
As a fellow Floridian, I think it's not healthy to go too long without listening to Free Bird...and I recommend a pilgrimage to Ronnie's grave site.
It NEVER gets old watching someone experience this for the first time.. Hmm I am gonna like this. Nice.....then its WTF JUST HAPPENED!!!!! haha
Glad you finally found some great Southern Rock!
I'm 60, I was lucky enough t see them live, before the plane crash. One of the best southern rock/biker bands out there!
can you imagine the energy flowing out of that concert. wow
They opened for the Rolling Stones that day and it's been said they did so good the Stones didn't want to use them again.
Marshall Tucker Band - Can't You See from 9/10/73
I second this one.
Yes please. I listen to this one daily.
Check out the radio version of Freebird also, if this one is a little long for you, lol. Try Ballad of Curtis Lowe, That Smell, Gimme Three Steps, lots more.
This was one of their big hits i think you would like the song gimme three steps.
Our cradle music here in the Southern United States...grew up on all things Skynyrd and Southern rock..glad to see y'all enjoying it..
"That smell", rocking with great theme
This song is the anthem of Southern rock. You should check out some current Alabama singers like the band Alabama Shakes and Anderson East.
Alabama Shakes are amazing .
Don't leave out that Bama Boy, Jamie Johnson.
That's my favorite live version . The one in Oakland , a year later , Is good too . "Give Me 3 Steps" "Tuesday's Gone"
