No one is ever prepared for the never ending solo.
Middle to the end solo*
Best part is that it doesn't actually stop, it just fades out. Almost makes you wonder how long it went on at recording afterwards doesn't it?
TheAtheistBrony if it’s anything like the live versions it was damn near twice as long
Roger Taylor said that they toured the US once and when they were getting on the plane home, this solo was STILL going 3 months later.
Welcome to Southern Rock. Try it live at say Oakland. This was a 3 guitar solo with some words. Try AC/DC Thunder Struck in concert.
And 46 years later it’s still the guitar anthem gold standard...
Hey Listen to this remake of "FREEBIRD" Thanks ua-cam.com/video/EfcbwQNciS0/v-deo.html
Damn straight.
Everywhere i go, i see you posting this exact comment lol

There are 3 lead guitarists and one bass. This song is a staple of southern rock
If not it's the Southern National Anthem.
Song is a staple of rock period 🔥
There's only 2 guitarists on the original studio version. Ed King was still playing bass on this as Leon has left the group during this recording.
This was our senior class theme song.
This is a staple of any music. Especially Otto the Bus Driver's playlist.
“ HOW IS HE DOING THAT?!?!” I am sorry I was dying😂😂 Growing up in the south and and hearing this song so much I forget that not everyone has heard it and this really brightened my day
Just imagine his reaction if he saw Eddie Van Halen play Eruption (Live) where he goes on for like 12 minutes.
ua-cam.com/video/L9r-NxuYszg/v-deo.html
I know! It is hard to believe people are hearing this for the first time !! It's so fun.
He needs to hear the live versions from England and Oakland colisuem concerts... Much better live...
Some people haven't heard rock in general
There's hope for unity in our country after all.
Man I love Free Bird reactions.
Every first-timer, 2 minutes in: Man, I'm really digging this guitar.
Me: You aren't ready.
Every first-timer, 5 minutes in: OH MY GOD.
Me: You still aren't ready yet.
Every first-timer, at the end: ...........
Me: RIGHT???
RIGHT!
Accurate AF
Right!!!!!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼💯💯🦅🤘🏼
Right one brother. Every damn time. Love it when the brothers react and see a whole new world open up: White boy Southern rock! LOL Great music cuts across all cultures. And Skynyrd pays homage to black musical heritage all over the place with the greatest of respect. Doc needs to check out "Curtis Loew."
Lol! Every time...
lol I can't get enough reactions to this song - the incredulous looks, one dude walked out of the room, one fell out of his chair, you're wiping sweat and out of breath - love it! And, yes, this song is where the guitar is the star. Love the lyrics and the vocalist, but he steps aside and allows the guitar to GO. Yes, one of the greatest guitar riffs of all time. Maybe some have matched it, but none are better than this... "Sweet Home Alabama" is a fun, well-known one of theirs, "Simple Man" is excellent... and more. :)
Alexa KL64 RIGHT! I’ve watched so many just to see the solo reaction. The best are when they’re iffy about the song and then the guitar hits and they lose their minds lmao
My Skynyrd faves have always been Tuesday's Gone, and Ballad of Curtis Lowe :-)
I’m 56, I was there for the birth of Skynyrd. The end ‘solo’ isn’t actually a solo is a guitarist duel, watch live version and pay attention to the end riffs
Your 56 and was there for their birth. Your kinda young for that baby. You must've got a head start on your peers.✌
Teresia Diane lol I meant the birth of the band, but sometimes these days I feel like I’m old enough to be everyone’s mama 😁🙃
I'm 56 also, and from Jax, Fl. I remember seeing Donnie V in my uncles garage partying. I was a little girl then and didn't know who he was until I became a teenager
@@loridrvr1 I grew up in Jax Beach and my mom still lives there! She is 57 and we lived just down the street from one of the band members widow. What an incredible group.
@@jaxeran very cool! I was a westside girl myself!
I was a young girl ( 10 ) when this came out , my mom and dad rocked THE HELL OUT OF THIS !!!!!!🤯🤣🤣🤣
And now I'm a grand mom and I rock the hell out of it 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The legend says that the guitarists are keeping playing the solo in heaven.
awesome
greatest southern rock band of all time bro, they got a ton of great music
One of if not the greatest solos of all time
One of ... Aqualung - Jethro Tull has to be up there
I’m 56, I was there from the start. Watch live version if you pay attention to end guitar ‘solo’ it is actually a duel between the guitarists. They had 3 before plane crash
Fahim Ahmad Gary Rossington wasn’t a New member Rossington, I think Allan Collins and possibly Steve Gaines were the ‘Solo’ guitarists in ‘77. Ronnie Van Zandt, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines all died in plane crash in ‘77. That’s why I used the words I did, I can’t remember in Live version which he is listening to if Gaines was also in duel. There is video of live version not great quality but it’s out there
Fahim Ahmad I don’t understand why you’re debating this with me go back to the original statement I made. I was just clarifying that the end solo wasn’t a solo but a duel and suggested they watch live version. The only thing I can think of is I didn’t specify the year. I was referring to 1977 version with original members because the studio version, and the album cover, that he is listening to is from Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd released in early 70s. Like I said I was there, before UA-cam, before MTV . We had radio, vinyl, cassette tapes, 8 track tapes, concerts and The Midnight Special on TV
Fahim Ahmad Just for the record I made this exact statement, not argument, directly below this one in public comments at the same time I suggested live version to @Josh Smith to clarify duel not solo. Just in case he didn’t know. You made zero comments on my public post directly under this
Now THIS is how someone should react when they first hear this song!😃I get exhausted just listening to the guitar solo,as well.😅
This guy is the coolest dude ever! I honestly thought his mind was gonna explode when the drum solo crescendoed! Fantastic. My friend that is the best reaction to a piece of music... Ever! Thank you Doc.
Hey Listen to this remake of "FREEBIRD" Thanks ua-cam.com/video/EfcbwQNciS0/v-deo.html
Most of the OG members died ina plane crash back in the day. They truly were ahead of their time in terms of raw talent
There was 2 guitars.
There was your life before Freebird
Now there is your life after hearing Freebird
"He's still playing", the part of the guitar solo where Allen is just worming up. LOL Ronnie said, the song was first written with only the first part being all of the song, just the lyric part. Then they decided to add the insane 1/2 half. Also, the record company did not want to put "Free Bird" on the album, because it was too long for radio play. Ronnie said, "I don't care, pick another one to play on the radio, we like like it". It can be fun to watch someone realize what an insanely great song "Free Bird" is for for the first time.
"HOW IS HE DOING THAT???" Well some of us have been asking that question for almost 40 years brother.
...Listen to this remake of "FREEBIRD." Thanks ua-cam.com/video/EfcbwQNciS0/v-deo.html
I love watching the reactions. People can't believe what they are hearing. If it's a live video, they can't believe what they are seeing and hearing. I was lucky enough to see the original band several times. The original band was and still is my all time favorite.
ROFLMAO! Now you know why we were such head bangers back in our youth growing up listening to stuff like this.
You're now officially a head banger, Doc. :D
“He’s still goin!!!”
Comment section: OH JUST YOU WAIT
“He’s still going” yup give it another 2-3 minutes lol. I love seeing people react to freebird for the first time
They're the epitome of Southern Rock!!!!. I grew up listening to them. Several members died in a plane crash during the 70's
He might of had a heart attack if he was reacting to the live version HAHA
Best teen memories are flowing!! You truly make me smile. I LOVE GUITARS!!!!
Can't miss with literally any Skynyrd song....on the hunt, Saturday night special, call me the breeze some of my favs
The name of the band comes from their high school gym teacher who was named lenard skynard who said they wouldn't amount to a hill of beans
Collins and Rossington....that's actually two guitars you are hearing on the solo...they went beast mode 2.0. Great playing. Every time I hear the end of the song, I always wonder how much linger did they actually play...they were still killing it full throttle when the song went off. One of the great all time performances of any band in history.
I only knew about this song because it’s used in the fight scene in kingsman 1, the guitar rift or solo at the end in particular is insane, one of the best instrumentals in any song I think, great song.
The Three-Guitar Attack is one of the greatest trios in music man. I miss these guys.
It’s so weird watching Doc as a music reactor when you first found him at the beginning his political reactions. Like a different person lol. Man, I know the feeling…that unveiling is real once it hits you. No going back after that. God is so good.
In the song Free bird, Alan Collins is the main guitarist for the solo towards the end. Alan Collins is self taught with the guitar. Gary Rossington plays the slide guitar at the beginning and throughout the song. Steve Gaines does play parts of the ending solo with Alan Collins. October 20, 1977 was a plane crash. Ronnie VanZant (lead vocals), Steve Gaines (guitarist], and Cassie Gaines (back up singer/sister to Steve Gaines) died in the crash along with the flight crew, and some of the people who worked for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Alan Collins wife passed away unexpectedly from a hemorrhage. Alan got into drinking heavy. A new band was started, it was the Rossington/Collins band. Alan continues to drink, and got into an accident that killed his girlfriend, and he was paralyzed from the chest down. He ended up dying a few years later from pneumonia related to being paralyzed. Billy Powell died from a heart attack. Not sure about the bass player, but Gary Rossington plays with Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Ronnie brother is the singer.. Artimus Pyle (drummer), and Gary Rossington (guitarist] are still alive.
This is one of the best songs ever
Prob the best reaction I’ve seen to this song lmfao..shit really catches u off guard
I think that's the least I've ever heard you talk during a solo or pretty much during the song. good job man! just enjoy it
I have seen Skynyrd several times. I saw them 3 times before the crash. I was also in line at Warehouse Records and Tapes to buy tickets to the show in Baton Rouge that they never made. While in line, they announced on the radio that they had been in the crash. It broke my heart. I should have bought the ticket anyway but i didnt. I regret it to this day. They were truly the best at that time.
Probably one of the most epic, magnum opus songs of all time. Good one to react to, especially if you haven't been down this southern rock road before.
When you get so taken away you forgot the song was about dumping his girl....
Rich do yourself a favor and sit down and watch “Freebird the Movie” before the crash and after to really appreciate Skynyrd.
And always react to Live Skynyrd
Live is best.
👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌 YES!
i will never forget his dad saying.... God is a jealous God cuz he took his son 😥...if thts same one
he was so so sad....i felt his words
The group originally included vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, bassist Larry Junstrom and drummer Bob Burns. Around 1972, Leon Wilkerson replaced Junstrom on base guitar, Ed King joined Gary Rossington, and Allen Collins on guitar’s, and Billy Powell joined as the Keyboard/piano player. Around 73’ or 74’ Bob Burns left the band and was replaced by Artimus Pyle on drums, and Ed King was replaced by Steve Gaines, whose sister Cassie Gaines was a back-up vocalist. So the best lineup was the last one imo. Which featured Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Gary Rossington, Allan Collins, and Steve Gaines (guitars), Leon Wilkinson (bass), Billy Powell (piano, keyboards), and Artimus Pyle (drums). This was the lineup that boarded the ill fated plane that crashed in the Mississippi swamp. Taking the lives of Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines, Dean Kilpatrick(road manager), and the pilot and co-pilot. Allen Collins, Billy Powell, and Ed King have since passed on as well. Now you know the band. May they all fly high and free.
Everything before the solo is the foreplay
This was my first concert.
You are so young, just makes me smile. Everybody has a meaning of their own for this one.
1/2 the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd died in a plane crash.. There is only 1 member left nab Ronnie can send (lead singer) his brother now doing vocals.... It was a very sad day. This song was in memory to those who perished....
There is a Texas Legend you should meet. He is the GOAT. His name is Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Amen
Heard there a Texas flood coming in a little wing
Rip
Hotel California by the Eagles!!!
By his reaction to this solo, he'll love that solo.
@@beondhuman I agree, haha
It will get blocked. Eagles block all reactions to their songs on UA-cam. That's why there's almost zero reactions to it otherwise it would probably be one of the most reacted to songs.
Lol, there is three of them (guitarist) still going. Allan Collins, Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines. Aka the guitar army.
Ronnie's "Mules" !
Simple Man by same band...great song
"'I was looking at the time and the lyrics were almost over and there was still half the song left and then.. that happened." I know the feeling. That's music. That's where it can take you. You don't always need lyrics, the instruments, the music can speak for it, they can speak for emotion. I'm glad you're learning the guitar, it takes you away :).
By the way please react to BABYMETAL - Road of Resistance live in Japan -> crazy guitar playing there. Or BABYMETAL - Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro. Trust me, as a guitar player, you won't be disappointed :)
Yeah, there's like 3 guitar players, bro, that's how. 👍👍
there's three but gary rossington and steve gaines are just there to keep time...that is allen Collins shredding, allen collins' solo
@@wildbill8561
Steve Gaines (R.I.P.) wasn't in the band yet. This was from their first album (1973). It's Gary Rossington, Ed King and Allen Collins. King left in '75 and was replaced by Gaines. That's Collins on the crazy guitar solo to end the song, Gary Rossington to start the song.
@@gregrambo606 you are correct. Even though I knew this was the studio version in my mind I was stuck on the live versions so many have done reactions to.
@@wildbill8561
Understandable. UA-cam keeps pushing reactors into live versions of classic stuff due to the copyright thing. If at all possible, it's best to do the studio (album) version first the live version after.
@@gregrambo606 that's right...
I can’t explain the happiness that I have found in finding your channel. 💞
.Listen to this remake of "FREEBIRD" Thanks ua-cam.com/video/EfcbwQNciS0/v-deo.html
This song is the musical equivalent to the climb you taking going to the first drop for the fast as hell Rollercoaster, and the solo is when the drop hits. And the rest of the song is the rest of the rollercoastet ride.
46 years ago and timeless....We all still have the same reaction this many years later, too.
The studio version features Ronnie Van Zandt lead vocals, Gary Rossington lead on the intro, Allen Collins lead on the outro, Ed King Rhythm and Fills, Leon Wilkerson Bass, Billy Powell piano and keyboards, Bob Burns drums, Al Kooper Mellotron and Organ.
Hey Doc..... I hope at some point you checked out the live performance of this at the Oakland stadium. Fire!!!
Mannn if you play along to this on your "Acoustic guitar" you hit a NEW level! Lmfao! Say good bye to your fingertips
Southern rock at its finest! Give a listen to Simple Man by them. All of their songs are amazing! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻💙💙💙
2.22 gotta love this guitar....everyone watching is laughing their ass off, You ain't heard nothing yet. Your head is about to explode in about 10 minutes
Lynyrd Skynyrd used to play The Peddler in Nashville before they caught on. Saw them at the Nashville Fairgrounds and was hooked.
Stevie Ray Vaughn "Texas Flood" and Yngwie Malmsteen "Black Star" live in 1994 Steve Vai Bad Horsie Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart "I'd Rather Go Blind" (Etta James Cover) also Rush YYZ or Tom Sawyer.another great Rush song is the 20 minute 5 part illustrated 2112 full song.

One of the all time greatest songs. and the greatest song ever played by an American Band
You need to react to Lynyrd Skynyrd live at the Knebworth Festival in England in 1976. If you think that this solo is good, wait until you see them perform free bird live on stage. Oh and that was 3 guitarists, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines.
From this album cover, L to R, Leon Wilkeson (bassist, but left the band during the recording of the album. He came back later) Billy Powell (piano), Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer), standing, Bob Burns (drummer), Allen Collins (primary songwriter writer for this song and guitar), standing far right, Ed King (bass on this album, and then when Leon came back, he also went to guitar) and seated is Gary Rossington, who plays slide guitar on this track.
Ronnie was killed in a plane crash in October 1977. He’s the only one in this picture that was killed. Ed King left in 75 and was replaced by Steve Gaines, who was also killed. His sister, and backup singer, known as the Honkettes, was killed, along with their manager, Dean Kilpatrick.
Bob Burns was replaced by Artimus Pyle on drums, and he also survived the plane crash. So, two of the guys from the band died, one girl. Besides the pilots, miraculously, everyone else survived.
You need to check out a live version from Knebworth music festival in 76 or Oakland, Cali in 77.
Watch the live Knebworth, England, 1976 to really see the guitars.
I remember when I was five my mom was playing this is the car and that’s when I truly appreciated Lynyrd Skynyrd. I said the same thing you did, “He still going” lol! I’ve since seen them in concert several times and met them and got Johnny Van Zants autograph.
Luv this mans enthusiam and smile ... good to see during these trying times. Good on you fella.
1 minute into the solo: "HE'S STILL GOING"
Everyone: *manic laughter*
If you love guitar you have to react to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Texas Flood live at El Macombo, Allman Bothers live, Led Zeppelin, When the Levee Breaks to name a few. Great LS reaction.
Watch Thunderstruck by AC/DC and realize the beginning is being played 1 handed
No, it's not. Agnus is just showing off in video, but you can clearly hear that he is using a pick. Also on live performances he is using both hands.
MrBegmar He does do that at live performances but he is capable if doing it one handed.
@@knoxboyd5150 aren't we all?
I can play it and it’s actually easier one handed 👌🏻
Y'all know we gotta get our guy on Allman Brothers next.
Whipping Post! His head will explode! 🤯
Hallowed Ground is what you are on with this song. The Southern Rock Anthem. Nobody will ever hold the greatness of this band.
Dude you got to see the live version of this. You`ll be exhausted by the end. BTW, they have 3 guitarists.
Now you know why all those guys were so skinny- imagine playing like that for an entire tour, plus rehearsals....
Hate to tell you. But Ed King was a heavy.guy
One of the great "It's not you, it's me" songs. XD
Also, if you want another epic southern rock song heavily featuring guitar solos, check out "Green Grass and High Tides" by The Outlaws.
And, if you want a great instrumental rock song, "YYZ" by Rush is a can't miss, imo.
Fuck green grass and high tides. I love the song but stay as far away from it as you can if you ever play rock band. It is murder especially on expert
You COULD listen to just the instrumentals but there’s NOTHING LIKE watching people’ reactions when the instrumentals start 😆😆😆
My holy trinity is Hendrix, Skynyrd, Hatchet. These guys really SOCKED DEATH, SONICALLY and it's nice to see many of today's youth, especially black youth appreciating this music. I say this because back then, If you were a fan of bands like this, many mainstreamers considered you to be a druggie, acid head or simply a loser.
I'm so glad that I always enjoyed ALL MUSIC OF THIS GENRE and it's nice to see it come FULL CIRCLE.
I'm from Sheffield where they recorded a lot of their music. Grew up on skynyrd. Curtis Lowe, gimmie 3 steps, and of course, sweet home Alabama. Incredible band, incredible sound.
Small world. I'm from Sheffield too, born, bred and buttered. That's an interesting bit of info regarding recording and performing here.
Attention to the bass during the guitar solo is worth a rewind. So nice.
He says "I'm legit sweating!!' and I say "I'm legit lmao!" during the guitar solo!! Loved his reaction! This legendary band is from where I am (Jax,Florida),so I know a LOT about them.Known people who've known them personally.(Not myself,i was about 6 when the airplane crashed). On this epic track, and many others of LS tracks, there are three guitars going, each separately, then simultaneously,it is so changed up and blends seamlessly. These musician's were so very gifted. They had so much success and great fortune-yet sadly so much unimaginable tragedy.

They are legends.... Love the reaction
Epic “guitar battle”
LOL and good luck with EVER playing along with that solo. Allen Collins is a Top 10 guitarist - incredibly underrated. And BTW, he's one of FIVE awesome guitarists that Skynyrd had over their career. Everyone knows Gary Rossington (who's also extremely talented and especially with the slower leads, slide work, etc), but they also had Ed King early on (he wrote the riff to Sweet Home Alabama and was very technically strong as well) and Steve Gaines for about a year before the plane crash. Gaines was FANTASTIC and really pushed Rossington & Collins to reinvigorate their playing and you can tell it in final albums. Then there's the one almost no one knows about: Ricky Medlocke (of Blackfoot fame) - he was in the band early on and is the guitar and vocals for Whitebird and The Seasons. Man what an awesome band - I could go on and on.
I took my kids to see them. At 11 and 12 they LOVED it. Great American classic band, historic.
Allev Collins was 18 when he composed that iconic solo. He played it twice recorded it and that's how he wrote it
For like nearly a half a century, this was the go to bar band/cover artist song, the one drunks cried to...
Do yourself a favor and watch the live version. You’ll never be the same. ✌🏻
Man, the 70's and 80's had some great music. I had a lot of fun!!! The reactions are priceless!
Lynyrd Skynyrd is the best southern rock band of all time. Ronnie van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Leon Wilkerson, Artimus Pyle. Ronnie, Steve, and, Cassie (Steve's sister and back up singer) all the were lost in a plane crash in October 1977. R. I. P. Google Skynyrd history, incredible story

I agree with many others...you HAVE TO react to the Knebworth AND the Oakland live versions. THX in advance from Germany
Yep, rumor has it the Stones said, "how can we go on after that?"
My favorite thing about this Knebworth show is that they were forbidden by the Stones to walk down on the tongue part of the stage...and they did so anyway!
Geeze, Stevie Ray Vaughn would give you a stroke! (Live version, Texas Flood @ El Mocambo)

Guitar solo is so insane it almost made Jenn-ay jump off a ledge.
Skynyrd is my fav band of all time.the 3 members that died in the plane crash was before i was born but i love their work.check out TUESDAYS GONE
The band members here are, Ronnie Van Zant vocals Gary Rossington guitar Allen Collins guitar Ed King bass(,later moved to guitar) Billy Pawel piano Bob Burns drums, then after the completion of this album Leon Wilkinson came back on bass, there were a few changes over a few years, but anything after the crash October 20 1977,was the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band although Gary Rossington gave the band band some sense of legitimacy, without Ronnie on vocals it's not Skynyrd
LYNYRD SKYNYRD IS THE GREATEST SOUTHERN ROCK BAND IN THE WORLD! WITHOUT A DOUBT! WE FOLLOWED THAT BAND ALL OVER THE US 🇺🇸. NEVER LOVED A BAND LIKE I LOVED THEM GUY'S! NEVER WILL! FREE BIRD 4EVER! THAT IS THE ONLY SONG I WANT PLAYED AT MY FUNERAL WHEN IT'S MY TIME TO GO.
A great instrumental song is Jessica by The Allman Bros Band
Watch the live version...The guitar and bass work are incredible!
So glad you didn't stop the track at that pivotal moment, I kept closing and opening my eye's and everytime I opened them to look at you, you were doing the same head nodding movement's as me. Great reaction mate, you appreciated the track the way it should be.. 🇬🇧👍❤️
you are doing yourself a dis service by not view the live in Oakland version ]:P
Totally agree !!!
You gotta start somewhere.
Fox Theater 76, the one from Gold & Platinum is THE recording of it and imvho, should be the start point. i know there's no video but having heard the best you can *then* go on to SEE how they achieved it all live.
'Play It Pretty For Atlanta' (not the alternate second take on the remastered and reissued 25th anniversary version ofOne More From The Road either - that was from the next night & isn't quite as Chef's Kiss as night #1) is the single greatest performance and recording of any live song ever. it's a hill i'm prepared to die on too!
Yes. Fist time I heard FREEBIRD was that live version from "Gold & Platinum" or the original version from "One more from the road". Haven't been the same since and almost 40 years later I still can't get enough of that solo!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Naw, the Knebworth concert! Longer outro & more camera focus on the band & less on the babes.
I love watching the reactions to Freebird. I am from Jacksonville Florida. My cousins husband lived in the same neighborhood as the VanZants.
3 guitarist in the band. That is how they played that part you talking about. You should check out the live version at Oakland coliseum in 1977, shortly before the tragic plane crash that killed 3 members of the band.
We took this music for granted, never thought newcomers would be blown away by it
