I'm baffled that its been long enough that a generation doesn't even know this movie exist. You really have to know canto to fully enjoy this movie or have some suspension of belief, the behind the scenes gave a reason I think on why they have to fiddle with the characters. Bunta is a bigger perv than the real life dk on hot version. Despite of the shortcomings I feel like its well made enough with the car scenes.

Well although, swapping engines cant automatic send you to jail, but on Other country it can send you to jail. tbh this initial d is great...but the producers ruin the characters by a mile....
I watch the making behind then scene, after some of the producer first choices rejected due to scheduling or personal reasons, he end up handpicked these actors
Due to too many side characters, some being combined into 1, at the end, imo the actors did a superb job by combining their own personality and acting skill into the original character
By compressing stage 1 to 3 into one however, the movie feel too rush, but I get it, they wanna do it that the Initial D Movie 2 to only include the massive stage 4 storyline

Well... because this is Chinese movie, not Japanese movie... lot of things changed.
Yes, because this was made by a Hong Kong studio with mostly HK actors (except for Jay Chou who is from Taiwan)
And HK studios back then did dub Stage 1-4 for their local audience in Canto and these versions were often downloaded/torrented and watched by SEA viewers, so to us in SEA watching an Initial D live action movie in Canto isnt that strange

Yea. Looking back at this movie. It was terrible. Especially the edits and transitions. It's like college group project.
its prolly cuz they wanted to combine stages 1 and 2 together into a ~2 hour movie, so a lot of lore is jangled up, which could have been avoided if they simply just made the movie entirely about the first stage. But I don’t understand why they made Bunta and Itsuki more annoying and less likeable.

The live adaption is cheesy, and mostly, the character designs tried to fit the acting styles of the actors, which were all high profile stars, rather than trying to be faithful to the source material.
This film reminds me of another HK film adaptation attempt from the 90s called Future Cops, which was very loosely but still very obviously based on the video game Street Fighter 2, and that also features a very big ensemble cast.
