What I’ve learned from Initial D is,
1. Handling and balance is number 1, mastered these then you can start talk about increasing power.
2. Practice makes perfect, skills/knowledge will makes you a powerful person.
3. If you notice, Ryousuke is basically Sun Tzu in 4th stage. He never pick a fight he can’t win, Project D racers always an unknown, he studied everything about the location and his upcoming opponents, he prepared/planned well, he won races with minimum efforts. Ryousuke is a super genius in Initial D. Also, this anime shows us that nothing is perfect, even a superstar like Ryousuke makes few mistakes.
So basically use a 930 911 turbo and you win

I love Takumi's character development. At first he didn't even want to race, he didn't find racing fun but overtime, it grew on him and it became more and more fun!

Sileighty was the cherry on top for me, the storyline built up to the climax of the race. Especially giving Takumi the feeling of adapting to other courses hes not driving before at a high pace
100%. That race taught him a lot, for sure… and those two girls were so impressively good at working together and with their machine, it's insane.
Ryosukes FC will forever be my favorite car from the series. It’s a major part of why I’m in love with cars in the first place and I will be buying an FC here in the near future

His arc is also interesting because he’s a racer who is pretty good, and while racing Takumi, learns that he isn’t one of the people that can become a professional. I’d say that’s a familiar experience to a lot of drivers

Is this like gorowase aka Japanese number puns? Like for example 573 could be pronounced "go-nana-mi" (Konami) and 765 could be pronounced "na-mu-ko" (Namco).
Most of, if not all the characters and their cars are based on real street racers from the 80's and early 90's. As are the races/situations. Ryosuke for example is based on a seldom seen Akagi racer, Mr. Hoshino. Who drove a white FC, the cars are nearly identical with Mr.Hoshino even having a red decal over the rear fender.
7:40 you got that wrong, takumi didn't win because Ryosuke tuned his car down, he tuned it down so it would be more controlable in the downhill, he would loose even more if he didn't tune it "down"

Thanks to this D list my Fiancé and I have relived the manga in our closets and watched Legends (We had no idea they remade it with the FD brothers and the Initial Stages)....Thanks donut. We literally remembered a lot of our juvenile past. With some popcorn and remembered the short skirts and sideways Rotary of our own beloved JDM / NZ history (just a bit lower than Australia, still have Holden Utes and some sheep) The fact that at our wedding there will literally be every car on this list as were older but kept the cars alive...Is really kind of Romantic....Long live the 86, long live Donut Media. and Initial D.
My 2 fav cars are Ryosuke’s Re:Anemiya FC and Shinigami’s BNR32 mainly because of the whole badass scene both cars were in and the very touching and interesting backstory of Kaori.
There are definitely cooler cars in this show but every time Takeshi came around a corner in his R32, with its theme playing, I got chills.

The AE86 actually was two cars..the original engine...then the racing replacement engine.
Honestly, in its final form, with the group a engine, it was certainly one of the best cars, regardless of the character or story.

I would have ranked that AE85 higher, it beat two S13s while it was stock when Takumi was behind the wheel. That scene made me smile the most tbh.
Well to be fair s13 stock are not much better performance wise so realistically yes with the right driver I can see that completely happening

I actually liked Sudo while re-watching the anime. You know, he was really cool with Takumi, like, "You've lost, your 86 is just ol' clunker, but i won't accept my victory, come back with a better car". Then Takumi beats him with his 86, and he's just "You win, thank you for such competition, i changed my mind, i'm going to be better, blah-blah-blah". You know it's not about his destination as a character, it's about the way.

I had a corolla E101(technically my parents did, from the year 2000) they never drove fast, so the car looked so innocent like it wasn't meant to be bad and crazy, the same engine powers Takumi's eight-six with the extra pro stuff in it, I was so fortunate to sit on one, one side of it makes it look like such a comfy family sedan, the other side, its a MONSTER
This was fun I like this d list.very creative and it's engaging with a lot of different types of people who love art , Anime,cars and bridges the gap between them I for one love cars and art but I've never seen this show and it looks pretty cool. Thanks for such a unique episode.

Initial D had one of the sickest scenes of showing the interior workings of the cars when they were raced like shifting of gears, opening of intake valve, etc.

To be fair the cars in initial d are made to be characters, and the drivers are just part of what they are. You can’t separate what the driver made of their ride in this show or a lot of these turn into average sports cars that don’t impress anyone.

I found out about Initial-D because I saw a glimpse of a clip of it on an early Up to Speed episode, and immediately said "WHAT WAS THAT", and looked it up. It's an obsession of mine now, I listen to eurobeat almost every time I get in the car. The first two seasons and the "season 3" movie are the best, the rest of the show wasn't nearly as good although it definitely had it's moments. For example, AE86 VS EK9 in season 4 was the best race imho, it just has a magic to it. The length was right, it didn't stretch into 4 episodes full of boring monologue, and the absolute banger of a song Forever Young was allowed to play out fully...when those headlights pop up and you hear "FOREVEEEER" it gives me goosebumps, and it was a perfect fit for the race.
That and perfect hero are my fave Initial D songs 💪😎
Wasn't in Initial D but Blackjack from Hi-NRG Man is one of the best eurobeat songs IMHO

I think Takumi will still win even Ryouske didn't tune his car down. He understood that downhill race isn't about horsepower but the ability to comfortably exit corners without putting so much frontal weight. That white fc is the single car that made me fall in love with jdm, and because of that, it will always be my favorite from this series, and one of my favorite jdm cars ever.

For me it's the strawberry face all day. Either that or an S14 Kouki front on a 180 body. Sileightys are also awesome though.
To me, the 240SX coupe/Onevia almost looks like a Superbird without the wing. I’m kind of suprised that nobody has built a bosozoku Onevia with a massive wing on the back. XD

I'm extremely surprised James actually watched the series for reals, and he remembers it so well. There are some guys who just kinda of go through the motion of watching the series, but super happy James actually liked it and remembered the plots.

You made me agree with every entry on this list... with one exception. After watching Initial D, I ended up finding 1 car cooler than the AE86... That being the Subaru GC8 STi. The reason being, besides everything you guys stated, that while training in time before his races while on team Project D Takumi would train doing time-attacks, switching between the AE86 and the GC8 STi with Takumi essentially beating himself in the AE86 with the GC8 STi, thus proving that the only person that Takumi couldn't definitively beat (besides his dad) is himself.
Also, I remember there was a AE86 Levin with a supercharger installed. Was that talked about in this list? Tbh I don't remember what the other name for it would've been
Honestly, I dig Itsukis Levin, it's an approachable and cozy car with some neat mods in the end, a very relatable car.

The 22B was my dream car. I was very sad to find out they never imported them, and if I wanted one with left hand drive the best I can hope for is finding the impreza 2.5RS coupe, and adding a turbo, proper suspension, correct rims, ext. Probably cost less to just import the damn 22b after all the time and effort that would take.
Not even close. LOL. It's in the hundreds of thousands to import a 22b. You can build a left hand drive GC like 22b for under $50k easily

Both really horrible things, but kidnapping a girl to force himself on her is lowest of the low. Takumi at least had a shot at defending himself. It's not like Mogi could have packed heat, this is Japan not the US and even then most don't see the need.
Shingo also swallowed his pride and admitted that he was a cocky asshole. He was also absolutely crushed when he banged up his beloved EG6.
Shingo, while still being an ass-hat, eventually came around to support Takumi.
Shingo actually wasn't that bad especially if you watched extra stages 👍
