I like how he keeps on upshifting and then downshifting a nano second later instead of just running out the revs. Shows how natural gear changes are to him, like breathing. This guy came out of his mother's womb in 3rd, sideways. 👌

@Power 2 Weight it is unnecessary and not great for the drivetrain. Being comfortable enought with a manual isnt really that great of a compliment, if you done it for a long time its muscle memory. That final gearshit for another 1 sec of acceleration gives you nothing.

when most people get understeer, they panic and slam on the brakes, usually crashing.
when Tsuchiya gets understeer, he dabs the brake for a split second, shifting weight to the front wheels, and then sharply throttles on, pushing the back end forward, and forcing the front wheels to grip, and then initiating a dance between both ends of the car as they fight each other to get through the corner first. amazing.

It seems so unclean and unprofessional, even when doing time attacks you'll sometimes see this side of his. Also, he really abuses the hell out of the cars he drives. Looking at the wheel it’s pretty obvious when the car is sliding. The reason you didn’t notice is because he is essentially power sliding or on power oversteer (what ever you want you call it) which doesn’t cause a sudden unbalance of the car like handbrake or clutch kick entries, it’s a gradual loss of grip.

*For the ones wondering if he invented Drift:*
"By driving hard on all types of surfaces and conditions he learned car control at the limits. In 1977 he debuted in the Fuji Freshman series, this was followed by several amateur racing events. 1984 saw him getting a drive with the Advan AE86/1984 Corolla GT-S. The Drift King was born. In this series his technique of using drift (sliding the rear of the car out) in a downhill corner yielded a better corner speed and improved lap times. This technique is what made him the Drift King not as most believe that he was first in the drift scene."

1:32 seems a very dangerous section, especially for those a bit more inexperienced with RWD, but Tsuchiya-san has been doing this since 1977 (when his _professional_ career started. He got his experience street racing and doing this for real).
At 1:35 you see him cut the steering wheel to the left suddenly - this is because he was going over bumps, and he felt the rear get lighter and start to shift to the left which is the first tell-tale sign of snap oversteer. Tsuchiya-san corrected for this in a split second and actually used the weight transfer to prepare for the next corner. Absolute legend of a driver.

I dont wanna talk to much shit, cause he's probably still a better driver that me, but its kinda boring to watch someone just slow way the fuck down in corners and gun it in the straightaways.
