20 years later and this battle is still one of my top favorites in my movie list. The battle of Zion against the machines shows just how desperate and fury driven the humans can be and how brutal and cold the machines are. Captain Mifune fought like a true soldier from start to finish, facing his death with a grin and a war cry that would echo the docks and halls of Zion till the stone crumbles and metal rust. Oh Captain my Captain. May the Valkyries take you to hall of heroes. Where the brave may live forever.
Halo and matrix and Star trooper and aliens and terminator the collabs are endless with helldivers I just hope that they do it and not just think because of the hype it fine as is
Not really. Just one EMP discharge and it knocked out the docks of Zion. That’s why the commander was pissed when Morpheus, Niobe, and the other captain came back and rescued the docks. Granted he was being a dick but still. Plus, Zion was only allowed to grow so much before it was destroyed (over and over).
Guys, keep in mind that in the Martix 2 Mifune says something to the effect of "We have no idea how any of this works, we didn't design this place, we just inherited it, we have no idea how we get fresh water etc." The designs of the mechs might have been handed down, which is why there was no protection, maybe they don't know how to make glass. This is also why the one guy who did understand how the mahines worked was able to use it to create the emp. By breaking the motor of the gate the counter weight created the emp.
Correction. The reason the APU doesn't have armor is efficiency of limited resources. In the history of first war with Machine it was shown how armor didn't mean much. Original APU is full armor from head to toe. And the Sentinels just cut the armor open and rip the guy out. And remember, this was the battle when Humanity was at its peak. Now, humanity had even less than that. The Machines can pierce whatever armor they can make at that point, so why bother? So the prevailing logic here: let's cut as much resources as needed to create one APU. It's just enough if it can move and aim the guns. How many more APU / guns to the fight can we brought into the fight from all the additional resources we got from stripping the armor away from every individual APU? The strategy here is win big risk big: Strength in numbers and Offense is the best defense.
@@ajwatcher Counter correction! He has the most reasonable answer. Tell me, you ever hear of shrapnel? It can be just as deadly or even more deadly than the robots. A protective screen would have done wonders. Stop bringing up for long cockpits! That's not what we're talking about.
If armor doesn’t matter, why the hell are you wasting metal on these huge, cumbersome mech suits? It’s like you people stopped thinking after working extra hard to come up with these defensive arguments. What’s the point of an armored suit if it cannot or does not keep the pilot in it alive? There is no point, it’s stupid, it’s a stupid design and strategy.
And yet many people still call it just a movie or fictions but we had technology to replicate it. They are ignorant and incompetent of human knowledge.
For those wanting an explanation: The APU's are built like mobile AA platforms. usually those things are kept open top for a reason. Due to the fact the arms need at least 180° rotation, additional armor plating would limit and ultimately defeat the entire purpose as a firing platform. They were meant to take down flying targets, from a distance. Once the machines got in close it basically became a losing battle to keep them out of minimum range, which as you saw proved disastrous. Even in a peer to peer engagement, the weapons the APU uses are essentially oversized M60's using ammunition at sizes usually loaded into IFV's. They were never meant for close range engagements.
That explanation makes no sense. The arms don’t need additional armor at the shoulders, where mobility would be limited, they need it at the pilot, because that’s the only way it operates? Also, why do they need 180 degrees of rotation? You didn’t try to explain any of that nonsense. Or why a mech would be necessary at all. Mobility makes no sense here, they’re on platforms, they can’t go anywhere, they needed more stationary firepower. All this wasted metal on a mech that doesn’t provide superior firepower, because the pilot could be killed from anything, as there’s no protection, and because there are no guidance systems, the pilot has dual weapons that are aimed via hand eye coordination. And that doesn’t need to maneuver, or doesn’t really need to utilize 180 degrees of motion. And they’re just m60’s, you say? A weapon developed for infantry use? …Watch later Matrix fans do all kinds of mental gymnastics to defend but fail at the attempt. I think there’s a word for all this… isn’t it stupid?
To all the comments pointing out that they should have added more armour to the APU. They've tried that before, but it didn't even made much difference. If you've watched The Animatrix, the world prior to this whole matrix series did use similar APUs against the machines that were completely covered in Armour and even had the ability to fly. However, all that armour was pretty much insignificant as there was 1 part that showed the machines / sentinels literally ripping the cockpit opened and tearing apart the person piloting it inside. So in this situation where resources are scarce, it would be better (Resource wise) just to produce as many APUs that have the bare essentials than wasting resources on armour which would only delay the machines and produce fewer APUs. Basically quantity over quality
For those who keep asking why the APUs don't have armor: watch the Animatrix. There's a VERY memorable scene that proves no amount of armor will save the pilot if a Sentinel got within melee range of them.
Can still hear the screams of that pilot getting his limbs ripped out when he's being dragged out of the armored APU while still secured in, scarred me as a kid.
So don’t waste precious metals on mechs that don’t do anything, especially that they cant protect their pilot? You could have 4+ man pad stationary guns from 1 suit. For those that keep thinking any crap from the animatrix suddenly fixes this… keep working on the problem. It makes absolutely no sense, without the hand waving of course.
"Why do you like the 3rd Matrix movie so much? Like, half of it was that big battle scene with the robots." Exactly. Even Jada driving the ship isn't enough to ruin this movie for me.
also that as a result of resources dwindling, the armours on the APU’s were being removed as shown with the last APU that was destroyed having less armour
It's still Very Sad. You can see by The captain's look ALL The time that he knew It was a Lost battle and everyone (And Zion) would die. Poor Mifune, to fight without having any Hope. We can't imagine The dark thoughts he was having on ALL of this.
so... I see a lot of comments down here picking these scenes appart, saying "this dosen't makes sense... This is stupid... It looks cool but it's bad tactic..."; and a s huge fan of both the Matrix trilogy and this battle in particular, I decided to adress EVERYTHING! Note that I'm not about to reveal some secret knowledge on the matrix universe, I'm just going to look for a credible (not realistic: credible) explanation of why things shown on screen are such. Ready? let's go: 1) Why use mech for defending a static position with one (well, by the end, two) point of entry? Turrets are less vulnerable and are even shown to be more effective at destroying sentinnels? first, they use turrets. Seconds, the mech can be, and probably are, used outside of the dock. The tunnels network surronding Zion is filled with debri and irregular terrain that forbid the use of wheels or tracks, hence the legged vehicle. 2) Why such terrible desing? the mechs are unprotected and use machine guns! Why not give them armor for the pilot and weapons such as the arc thrower carried by infantry? Possibly because the mechs are modification of a non military design (I'm thinking a heavy lifting machine, such as seen in Aliens). It's possible that adding armor would be too complicated, ressource intensive or having too heavy of a downside. Plus, sentinels are shown to be more than capable to go throhgh heavy armor, so getting rid of it would at least give the pilot visibility and ease of escape. Also, they use machine guns because the best way to not be killed by a sentinel is to stay away from it: the arc thrower has a short range, and is shown to be very inneficient at destroying sentinels (or even humans). A spray of high calliber bullet is better in every way. 3) But why use measly machine guns? Why not artillery or explosive? Don't they have better weapons? They do have better weapons: all the hovercraft of Zion are equiped with EMPs. They even wanted to use them on the droid army before they reach the dock. But the ambush was thwarted off screen in the end of the 2nd film. The probable reason for why the dock itself dosen't have an EMP is because of all the important equipement stocked there. If an EMP is used defending the Dock, the Dock is as good as lost. As for the artillery... Why would they have them? Zion is the last haven of mankind, because it is hidden deep underground, below MILLIONS OF TONS OF ROCK AND DIRT! Using any kind of explosives under these condition would simply be suicidal. TLDR: I think everything in this battle makes sense, if only you want to engage with the Matrix universe. If you're not conviced, or you think I missed something important, you can respond, and I'll give an awnser. Thank for your attention.
Lets not forget the ammunition and rockets/shells they used during the fighting in Zion either, it was all handcrafted as well which means they don't have access to large scale production because once of the scenes has one of the characters literally mixing up an explosive compound to use in the rockets/shells that were used to take out one of the drillers.
What I love about the machines is when a few get through they start to pull fire away from the hole, less guns means less ammo used on that one spot, easier to get through. Then they start flying all over the place to draw even more firepower away from the hole. Excellent stuff.
Before someone does an AKSHUALLY comment about the APU's, consider this: They were built to essentially be bi-pedal hydraulic powered mobile AA platforms, since the machines use only sentinels for swarming. They're not built for close range or being armored because the point is to light up the enemy from afar on full auto until the belts run empty. Having armor plating or a enclosed cockpit would negate the full 180 degree abilities of the arms and aiming, which is all manual. Just like WW2 era AA vehicles and trucks.
Well that being said, this could be mitigated through sensors (like having a series of screens placed around the Pilot connected to external sensors, that would allow the user to "see through" the armour, as seen in some Tanks prototypes like the Abrams X) and a neuro-link System (in which matrix seems to be way more advanced in, allowing for more fluent and accurate movement). This way they could maintain situational awerness and the ability to move the arms accurately and quickly, but also adding to their survavility way more, allowing them to better counter swarms of sentries. Just some design thoughts, not saying what you say it's unvalid, infact it's VERY likely that the improvements I mentioned are not possible due to the awfull situation Zion is, so this design makes sense.
It's hard for me to tolerate the criticism about the defense against the machines in this Matrix scene because it’s obvious they haven’t watched the other movies and of course and most important, ANIMATRIX to understand why they defended themselves that way. It was the ONLY option they had left
5:11 A single blow from a sentinel's claw can kill you without a problem, and yet all these bastards at 7:25 hit him in the face and chest lightly, making him suffer... *Look how they massacred my boy*
A detail that is never explained that i love is that the when shot, the sentinels emit yellow and blue sparks. The yellow are regular impacts but the blue are from their anti gravity field getting busted. The same field that the ships use to fly in the tunnels

FOR SUPEREARTH!!! FOR DEMOCRACY!!!
if they adapt this freaking APU on HellDivers 2 ...... I will play the game every single day.....
Halo and matrix and Star trooper and aliens and terminator the collabs are endless with helldivers I just hope that they do it and not just think because of the hype it fine as is
FREEEEEEEEEEDOM!!!

I find it hard to believe that all their ships are equipped with EMP's but they didn't bother to equip the city with them. Convenient oversight.
Back when practical and CGI go hand in hand to create epic scenes. There are miniature effects here.
I'll die on the hill that this was the best part of the entire franchise. Pure badass rage with no surrender.
Captain Mifune was a total bad ass. I still remember watching this in theatres it was epic
this is 11 years old and look how good the effects look. Better than most shit new films they churn out
My man, this movie is from late 2003, it was over 20 years ago! They were really talented.
@@duh9355 my bad. So even more impressive the effects where back then
The Last Stand of Helldiver on Automatons Planet.

Yes soldier 👍, for democracy
When i was a kid and to this day, this movie is still giving me goosebumps
Bro went out like a fucking boss
Him and his Mech Battalion went down like true G's
They'll sing ballads of his bravery and excellent leadership millions of years later!!
Best scene in the entire franchise..I love the APU design as its most likely something we can currently make in our current technology timeline
And yet many people still call it just a movie or fictions but we had technology to replicate it. They are ignorant and incompetent of human knowledge.
I wonder how Mifune was able to move around with that mech with those massive balls.
Mifune and his men went out like true warriors. They are celebrated in Valhalla
For those wanting an explanation:
The APU's are built like mobile AA platforms.
usually those things are kept open top for a reason.
They were never meant for close range engagements.
seems they were designed for construction, like shooting cap screws or something like that...
@@ShadowFri3nd hahaha!
I said it once but ill say this again. MECH WORKS BETTER IF THE GUN IS BOLTED TO THE ARM, NOT HELD BY FLIMSY MECH FINGER
I still cannot believe that APU carried Captain Mifune's massive balls and heart. He was truly BADASS.
Correct.
your right there a scene the pilot got ripped out of the mech
Same reason they don’t issue every Imperial Guardsman a Boltgun in Warhammer 40K. Sometimes, all you need is “Good Enough.”
@@arcem84me too dear god the war was horrible
@@arcem84 same man, I saw that in a department store and it scared the hell out of me. Fuck the bots.
If only they have self detonate option
So don’t waste precious metals on mechs that don’t do anything, especially that they cant protect their pilot? You could have 4+ man pad stationary guns from 1 suit. For those that keep thinking any crap from the animatrix suddenly fixes this… keep working on the problem. It makes absolutely no sense, without the hand waving of course.
One of the most glorious deaths in the history of cinema. KNUCKLE UP FOR CAPTAIN MIFUNE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Took me watching this clip 5 times before I understood what he was saying. Such a good line
The greatest last stand in cinematic history
This guy practically carried the movie, the biggest war hero of them all
And the best too
Captain mifune was both a savage and a boss, r.i.p captain
I saw this in theaters. One of the best theatrical experiences of my life.
"Why do you like the 3rd Matrix movie so much? Like, half of it was that big battle scene with the robots."
Exactly. Even Jada driving the ship isn't enough to ruin this movie for me.
for those wondering why no armor, watch Animatrix The Second Rennaisance part, I rather die on the spot than be trapped inside that walker
also that as a result of resources dwindling, the armours on the APU’s were being removed as shown with the last APU that was destroyed having less armour
exactly
All these years later this sequence still gives me anxiety and dread from the overwhelming odds stacked against humanity's survival
It's still Very Sad. You can see by The captain's look ALL The time that he knew It was a Lost battle and everyone (And Zion) would die. Poor Mifune, to fight without having any Hope. We can't imagine The dark thoughts he was having on ALL of this.
Sometimes hope hides in the darkness.
"If this is how it ends, I'll taking as many of them as I can with me."
Ready? let's go:
1) Why use mech for defending a static position with one (well, by the end, two) point of entry?
Dear god, this is the best explanation i ever seen, good work buddy.
Cope it doesnt make sense
@@ThorGiske peak argument
This movie is 20 years old and the Special effects look better than some movies nowdays.
What I love about the machines is when a few get through they start to pull fire away from the hole, less guns means less ammo used on that one spot, easier to get through. Then they start flying all over the place to draw even more firepower away from the hole. Excellent stuff.
"If it's our time to die, it's our time..... but if we have to give these bastards our lives. WE GIVE 'EM HELL BEFORE WE DO!"
That's badass.
3:25 that overhead shot of the 3 mechs back to back is so badass
Before someone does an AKSHUALLY comment about the APU's, consider this:
They were built to essentially be bi-pedal hydraulic powered mobile AA platforms, since the machines use only sentinels for swarming.
Just some design thoughts, not saying what you say it's unvalid, infact it's VERY likely that the improvements I mentioned are not possible due to the awfull situation Zion is, so this design makes sense.
or just, hear me out, have multiple emps ready to be used.
This is all i ever wanted in VR. Me and 63 other strapped boys screaming at our inevitable end with big giant robot guns
love how we all collectively came back for this
Gotta go back to get some of the good that is missing nowadays :P
Hands down the best action scene of any "fight for humanity" action flick FIGHT ME
It's hard for me to tolerate the criticism about the defense against the machines in this Matrix scene because it’s obvious they haven’t watched the other movies and of course and most important, ANIMATRIX to understand why they defended themselves that way.
DUUUUUUDE!! That makes more sense!!! I honestly thought the blue spark was the power source or circuits exploding do to the bullet impact.
Coool, thanks!
That dude gave that role everything he had, holy shit.
