I know you don't want to ugly up things with the signs, but honestly I think that's what you're going to have to do. Not only for the deterrent factor, but also potential legal liability if someone gets hurt on your land, it's an additional shield for you that a person knowingly trespassed and thus took on additional responsibility for whatever happened next. You also mentioned that part of your land is not yet fenced..you need to remedy that ASAP. Finally, I don't know what the laws are there but here in Texas you can paint the fence posts purple and that has the legal standing of a combo no hunting/no trespassing sign. That might be an alternative to the ugly signs if you've got similar laws on the books there. edit: North Carolina indeed does have a purple paint law. Check it out :)

Since he's in NC, he can benefit from posting signs since NCGS 14-159 allows for the posting of signs to act as a deterrent and/or warning that the area or property is private and the trespasser should know that he/she is not welcome.
Many states, like GA where I live, posting a sign doesn't matter. In order to be charged with OCGA 16-7-21, a person must remain on the property after being told to leave by the owner, tenant, or representative before the trespassing become criminal unless there's also some monetary damage associated with the intrusion.

Other option is the horizontal purple paint lines on trees. I don't love that idea either. One day, I saw a hunter deep on my land, as I was feeding my animals. I hollered out, "Please make this your last trip on my land." He flipped me off. I had dog food, he had his hunt gear. Yup, no argument. Then, there are the half-starved hunt dawgs running the land, chasing goats... In short, I feel your pain!

I caught a couple of guys trespassing on my property during deer season a few years ago. I spotted them on my security system (similar to Josh’s). I saw that they were armed so I grabbed my AR and plate carrier. I called the sheriffs department on the way out to get a cruiser rolling my way. When I con fronted these morons they claimed I was trespassing on their property and I needed to leave before they called the police. I told them the sheriffs department was already on the way. When the deputies (friends of mine) arrived the idiots still tried to say it was their property. It got pretty heated for a few minutes but they finally admitted they were trespassing and both were arrested. One was charged with possessing a firearm under disability (convicted felon), the other guy was charged with criminal trespassing with a firearm. Im sure if I had gone out there unarmed I probably wouldn’t have come home.

Josh, Always bring a pistol, just because you do not want a altercation does not mean the intruder is not willing to force one. You are on your own property, and I "am pretty sure NC" allows concealed carry on your own property with out license. I agree with you, just ask the person to leave and not come back. However, it is better to have some sort of protection.

I respect your desire for privacy, security, and the right to restrict access to private land. I find that your search for the trespasser a bit overly dramatic, but it’s your land. It would appear that your quest to find this person is like looking for a particular fish in a lake. Consider how he got to your land and place your cameras to identify him/ his vehicle accordingly. Just a thought.

I’ve caught a couple. I have 37 acres in SE Pa. It is crazy how people believe they can do whatever they want. The police here took care of two poachers/trespassers.
The game warden took care of another guy. That guy will never legally hunt again and weapon seized.
But - I can’t imagine how you keep an eye on your farm. I grew up on a 140 acre farm and my dad used to walk the land. Even in his seventies. Tough old man.

In North Carolina all you have to do is pant a purple stripe on the tree to let people know no hunting. I would go around your property line and spray every so often to make a perimeter.

In Missouri all you need is purple markings for no trespassing. My guess is he may have been trailing a deer. But st that he should still have asked. Place a note on cardboard back where jes at letting him know hes been caught. Besides hes carrying a cross bow. Most states that stuff is out of season during gun season.

Here's one way to keep trespasser's at bay. Put up a couple outdoor wireless speakers around your property. And connect them with a motion sensor. When trespasser is detected. It plays DELIVERANCE DUELING BANJO'S 😜 You got a right purtty mouth there boy!

In VA you can spray a silver or purple oblong on trees to signify it’s posted. Check your regs for that if you don’t want signage.
