The theory this meme relates to getting married is actually just an urban myth. You'll find absolutely no basis whatsoever in history to that meaning, whereas you really can take an arrow to/in the knee. OUCH! 😉
Spot on, thanks! The line was written just as a throw away comment by the game creators to make the guard sound more interesting. The 'getting married' hidden meaning is only a modern interpretation. 👍🏻
you're ascribing historical bias to a totally fictional world with giant flying, fire breathing lizards, anthropomorphic cat folk, elves, orcs, magic schools, the undead and a form of demon. Just because that isn't a phrase in OUR world to mean getting married, it doesn't mean it isn't a phrase meaning that in Tamriel or even Nirn especially as the Nords originated from another continent (Atmora). Phrases meaning things spring up all the time in reality. some of them have no connection to what they actually mean such as "No cap" to mean "no lie" "get down" to mean "have a dance" and lets not forget the myriad of phrases that UK has to mean getting drunk. Why couldn't "Take an arrow to the knee" mean "get married"?
@@thehistorysquad but even so it is a fun one. the guards also got a fun line thats more sarcastic "let me guess, somebody stole your sweetroll". the guards also have other dialogs like scolding you for having acctive magic like flame spells, tell you to not throw shouts around and they have lines afther you done specific quests and some more lines like if you do alchemy they might sey they never got a hand on the skill, or ask if you could brew them an ale
I see where you are coming from but no, it still obviously is true. There are plenty of very similiar phrases that all mean getting married, which obviously inspired this quote. taking the knee means proposing, and is a common phrase. Taking an arrow in the knee is almost the same but just funnier.

As if Kevin wasn't cool enough, he goes and makes a video about a Skyrim reference using real-world practicality. Now that is how you make learning about history all the more fun.
Tbh they taught history the wrong way in elementary and high school. All they taught you was the who, when and where. Soon as I went to college they focused more on the how and why which made it WAY more engaging. Best example is the industrial revolution. Most boring topic to learn about when all they tell you is when it happened and what happened but once you learn why it happened it’s really cool to see the innovations people were forced to come up with within the context of why we were forced to industrialize so quickly
Thats not how it works You cant visit school and say : " Omg all this boring stuff make me to not wanna learn this stuff omg so bad educator i got " The shool is here to teach you basics dosnt matter if you like them or not Kids like you literally crying cause youl need to learn something like my god grow up and get some balls. Wow, so awesome. He made a video about a video game that came out *L I T E R A L L Y over 12 years ago*. And even in reference to a joke that got old by like 2012. So cool and topical! Give this man an award!
As much of a throw away joke as it originally was, I love that it was taken as seriously was. Diving into the lore of the game i did find that the saying was intended more as a "I use to be an adventurer like you, then I found my wife and got married".
Hi Kevin! I was recently in a car accident and shattered my right patella. Found this video because I was thinking about how if I was born 500 years ago I’d be crippled for life… very happy that we live in an age of modern medicine! Cheers ❤
Who else is watching this video while rubbing and appreciating their knees?! It’s so funny how we gamers that played Skyrim 13 years ago for the first time never really thought about that line. Now in my late 30s I’m honestly feeling sorry for that guard….

Sometimes I wish I was somewhere back in history to witness the old world but then I watch a video like this and I'm glad there is a hospital less than 15 minutes from my house
Last March I broke my kneecap in 8 pieces after hitting a tree while downhill skiing. What was striking (heh) about it was how little mobility I had. The pain was bad, but I've actually had worse in lesser injuries. I actually didn't think I had broken anything. But modern surgery, good choices post injury etc. have allowed me an almost complete recovery. I can run, ski if I choose, ride a bike, or cringe in the corner just thinking about it. Of course I had to click on this!!!
I lost my knee 4 years ago. I can confirm you would never walk again. l remained on a bed for 2 years, waiting for the elevated pain to subside, l was given a dual pain relief of Tramadol and Oxycodone, both highly addictive so l voluntarily withdrew from both of them after 16 weeks through fear of becoming an addict. I went on to lose everything in my life, to the point l begged to God to take my life, ( l do not believe in suicide). As of writing this l have the support of my dog, who's love sustains me. I dare to dream a future once more, and just like you, l do not cringe in the corner.
@@ГеоргийВелинский l decided within days of this event to apply myself to study and so work towards new goals, it helped to pass the enormous time away, whilst in my room, and on my bed for those years. Ironically the rest of the world joined me at that time with the COVID lock downs. I gave a wry smile listening to other people's struggles with isolation and involuntary restrictions due to this fact. It would appear that many people did in fact give up, and still carry that legacy today. Coincidentally and quite by chance a near elderly male neighbour of mine was going through a similar fate as myself, his partner could not help him. He would have appeared to have given up by becoming overwhelmed with his new life, and so wanted to kill himself, this strain was etched across his partners face, until l left my unsuitable home, some while later. His partner literally ran out of ideas to support, care, and love for him. Nobody understood this change in his partners demeanor that had changed so dramatically , and for the seemingly worse so much. I understood, and also came to realise that in fact a mental disability can be in rare instances equal in magnitude to a severe physical disability. When something like this happens to you, you are presented with two choices, get busy living, or get busy dying. Choosing either one of these outcomes will eventually come true. For both of you.

As a sports therapist, I am very impressed by your knowledge of the knee anatomy 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Even by today’s standards, the knee can be quite difficult to rehabilitate, depending on the severity of the injury. We have it easy compared to the folks of the past. Keep up the good work Kev!
Never Seen a video from this channel, had no idea it even existed. But of course me being a Gamer this got recommended to me . And i cannot express the gratitude i have! Hearing the guard say his line 1,000,000 times . And now truly understanding what he meant, as a Gamer i can now die in peace
I’m not a big gamer myself, but I do enjoy history and random historical facts I can throw at my friends. This video popped up in my feed and this man has such a nice vibe to him. I just couldn’t scroll away. Glad I didn’t.
Don't think I've winced so often watching a UA-cam video. Thank you (I think 🙂). Used to play front row rugby and remember one game where a scrum collapsed and the opposition hooked dislocated his knee cap. I've heard louder screams of pain but never such high pitched ones....
1 little detail I'd like to add: The knee joint also has a synovial capsule which contains a fluid that lubricates the joint. Said fluid is extremely important for the smooth sliding between the cartilages of the tibia and femur (also meniscus). With that in mind, an arrow doesn't need to damage any other structure of the knee joint to be devastating due to the fact the cartilages start to rub between them, wearing them prematurely and causing arthritis in the joint.
Absolutely true. And, medicine has yet to determine why the body reduces the production of synovial fluid, allowing said cartilage wear to start. Overall, I've had 6 knee operations including Total Knee Reconstruction (ACL and meniscus) and Total Knee Replacement so, I've learned a little bit about knees and other joints.
Very good point! Probably a another point worth making is few people lived as long as today, so arthritis may not develop due to death of the individual first.
@@mattandhollym7912surely the almost daily hard labour of farming would take its toll on the joints from an earlier age than the age-related causes for most people?
@@mattandhollym7912 I'm not 100% sure, but I do recall some remains found in England with bone spurs (osteophytes) in some hip joints. That must have been a tremendous amount of pain.
@@neiloflongbeck5705 Yes and no. If you work non-stop from sunrise to sunset every year, without taking time to rest, yes, it's very likely people would've suffer from it. But if you had somebody, like your son, farming half a week and you the other half, you give your muscles a chance to develop in a way the supports joints. It's called "Proprioception feedback loop" if you're interest in learning more about it.
Very unhappy that UA-cam hasn't recommended your stuff to me in the past. Fun and very informative, with a lot of topics covered in your videos, your passion pours through every word, incredible work!
I'm no a gamer either, but I love how you've acknowledged them and brought them in the fold by great real life comparisons like this. I think it's very beneficial to make people's interests relatable to history.
In Skyrim, Mr. Hicks would most likely be a mage under the employ of a Jarl, perhaps even the Jarl of Whiterun. Or a surgeon for the Imperials in a field hospital in Bretton country where a lot of injuries are likely to occur due to guerilla activities of the Foresworn.
He’d would definitely buy alchemical ingredients from argonians and Khajiits (the lizard and cat folk) to make antibiotic salves Skooma is one hell of a painkiller
When I saw the phrase 'I took an arrow in my knee' I wondered, is he talking about Skyrim. Well sure enough. Back in 2018 I had, guess what, knee surgery replacement. As I was disabled for 8 weeks I tried playing Skyrim to pass the time. I'm 69 and no video gamer but Skyrim just enthralled me and I've been playing it even until now. I'm a history buff and especially I'm fond of Medieval history. Skyrim really lets you immerse yourself in a cool Medieval world. If you ever find yourself disabled or you just want to have fun you should try it. It's a huge fantasy world and very complex but easy to play. Thanks for the videos. They're great.
I got a big chunk of shrapnel in my knee from an IED in Iraq. Came in from the back and no one wants to remove it because of all the stuff in the knee. All the nerves, vessels, tendons, ect could get damaged during surgery.
I'd imagine it's partially because if it's a big enough chunk, there would then be a void that wouldn't necessarily fill in, which could cause some serious problems after removal, from filling with fluids to infection, and would always be a problem.
He signed up for service. Soldiers follow orders. Direct your hate to those who caused it - Democrat/Rebublican establishment. Anybody who didnt vote Trump in 2020 voted for war, and is also part of the problem. Such people should keep any opinion about war to themselves.
Your nerves also group together right there in the knee. Depending on how the arrow hits, you can have extensive nerve damage. This can possibly lead to a foot drop (where you cannot lift your foot no matter how hard you try). It is incredibly hard to run, and still hard to walk, with a foot drop. I only know this because it happened to me, but not because I took an arrow to the knee.
Thanks, I 'kneeded' that, another great video! One can only imagine the suffering these kinds of wounds inflicted, especially with secondary infections! It's hard enough even today, even with M.A.S.H. and CAS-EVAC with surgeons even on the aircraft with the casualties, but at least they have a decent survival chance nowadays.
Well Kevin no matter where the arrow strikes it is going to be extremely painful. Having recently had a full knee replacement I can confirm that the recipient of the arrow will be feeling very sorry for his/her self.
This is my first video for this channel--I clicked on it thinking that it was going to be interesting, but largely dry and clinical. I did not expect to be given a history lesson by a gregarious, excited grandpa gremlin. It's SO much easier to learn and process information when the person teaching you is both knowledgeable and passionate! I hope the rest of this channel's videos have that same energy!
I quite like this chap. He could easily be one of those history teachers that actually makes history come to life in the classroom. Cheers from the Great White North.
I have heard somewhere, in the context of the game 'taking an arrow to the knee' means 'I got married'. You can't well adventure around when you need to feed a family! Great video, entertaining, and relatable to me who fractured my knee last year. I can't imagine the damage an ill-placed arrow could do!
I’m not sure if it’s meant to be an in-universe metaphor or a real life one though, since in Skyrim there is no down-on-one-knee ring proposals, and you just wear an amulet of Mara and basically confess to each other So other than it being an out of universe joke from the Devs, maybe people use it in real life? Idk
@@assistantmagus5213The saying is not about proposal, as the commenter said. If you watched the video, you'll learn that taking an arrow to the knee means being crippled badly for life. At those times, you couldn't go on an adventure if you shattered your knee. You'd be bound to short distances. In Skyrim timeline, if you're an ordinary person, married and have children, you probably couldn't go on an adventure as you'd need to stay to feed and protect your family. In both cases, you'd be staying still.
As Todd Howard has revealed, they put almost zero thought into that line and just put it in there with a few other dozen lines. There's no lore or secret message behind it, it was just there, free of innuendo or context.
Idk how this popped up on my recommendations but this channel is a gem. What a great find. I love learning random history stuff like this and _especially_ Medieval European history (the best? clearly). But I also love the American Old West and pleased to see there's a some vids on that. Both eras/places just have such a romantic quality, makes me feel adventurous. This guy has a great personality and voice for a channel too. Subbed
Several years ago I strained my LCL on the outside of my knee. It hurt a lot and I limped for several weeks until it healed. I can only imagine how bad it would have been to have it cut. Those medieval images of people with leg injuries was very interesting. I've never seen anything like it. Another very interesting video. Thanks.
I made a small rupture on the (I believe that's the name in english) medial collateral ligament, so on the inside part of the knee. Might've been a strain like yours, but the doctor did call it a rupture. Anyway, I was in my teens, hurt like hell for about a week, then I could limp around mostly okay, but I limped for probably a month and it still wasn't at 100% after 2 months. Really can't imagine how much an arrow would have hurt. Bloddy knee still hurts from time to time, about 10 years later, but at least it also predicts the weather which is quite nice xD
You are so awesome for researching what this Zeitgeist's humour is all about, tying it in and thereby making history relatable. You're a brilliant teacher, thank you. x
Hello I'm from Texas and I am new to your channel. This is definitely a one of a kind channel there's nothing like it. The medieval times. I've always wondered. Hurts just watching but that's a good thing. Thank you sir...👍😉
Thanks very much for the video, really sheds light on what happens when you tear a ligament. When I was in high school I was a skateboarder and was taking the sport seriously. I lived, breathed and dreamt of skateboarding and even worked at a skate shop. I was pushing to become a pro skater and was taking on bigger and bigger staircases to jump over. One piece of advice I can give it doesn't matter the sport... ALWAYS do stretches before a workout or activity to get your muscles and ligaments warmed up. I was traveling through downtown Toronto, Ontario and came across this staircase I wanted to jump and instead of warming up first I just decided and felt confident enough to just take it on. I did an ollie with a 180 spin and I landed it but one of my feet slipped off the board and the board kept going... My knee tore a ligament and it was the most pain I ever experienced in my life!! Sure enough, it never repairs itself and had to quit the sport for the most part. Even affects other sports, now if I do basketball or skateboarding for example I have to use a knee brace to give it the extra support because the ligament is not there on one side to give it the extra support. Thanks again for the demonstration!
Great video Kevin. I'm in my late 60's and have been playing Skyrim since it first came out in 2011. I am also familiar with knee injuries. I spent 13 months in a Navy hospital recovering from a Fib/Tib fracture above the left ankle and shattering the left kneecap. The kneecap was surgically removed (to many small pieces and they couldn't put in an artificial one ) and had a cast for nine months. Learning how to walk again wasn't a lot of fun and wouldn't wish a knee injury on anyone. Take care, Kevin and I'll catch you next time.
These are two things some people often underestimate: the medical knowledge of the people in the Middle Ages and what it actually means to be shot in the leg, most notably bleeding out fast like he said. There's also the possibility of the arrow being poisoned or secondary infection in general.
@HaraldSedlmeyer There's always someone like you in the comments. Honey was known and used for its antibiotical properties and weapons and arrowheads were covered in feces (what I was referring to as poisoned in my initial comment). And other types of biological warfare. Of course they didn't know what bacteria where, but they still had a general understanding of hygiene and tried to prevent infections or used it to their advantage. Surgery existed, obviously not like today if that's what you mean with "real surgery". In wartime, your life expectancy wasn't good because it was, well, war. Otherwise you could actually live to old age.
Just like the Ancient Civilizations Created Maize/Corn from the Wild Teosinte Plant. Maize/Corn would never naturally happen through nature. Maize/Corn is 100% dependent on human intervention.
I commented on your last medieval medical video saying they were my favorite and got a response to keep a look out for more in the future but unfortunately I missed this video for a couple of weeks. Thanks for another great medieval medical video and thanks for all of your videos. I know you are my favorite UA-cam history presenter and very high on my list of all history presenters in general. I also love when I’m watch a random older history documentary and I see and hear a familiar voice and face pop up, I don’t remember exactly which documentary it was but in the last week or so I found a rare history documentary that I hadn’t seen before and there you are great to see this and to see how long you’ve been doing this I love it.
My father tore a ligament a lot like what you're describing and he's never truly recovered from that. All from wanting to show off to us with a dirt-bike stunt in our backyard. He did a small jump then toppled over into the fence. The moment he stood up his knee toppled over to one side and he fell back down in agony.
I've spent many a hour being entertained, laughing and fascinated by your channel Kevin. If history lessons at school was like your channel more kids would be interested in history but some of our history teachers could be quite difficult to pay attention to due to the boring way the subject was delivered to us, if we had you teaching us things would be a different matter as your way of explaining history keeps you watching, hope you keep us entertained for many years to come. 😊
I think in media we tend to ignore just how hard of an impact a bow inflicts. Arrows tend to just get stuck in a few inches at most in movies etc, but a longbow could easily shatter several types of modern ballistic armor. An arrow in somewhere like the knee would destroy those bones. Horrific injury. Thanks for the video!
Exactly! One time, i was trying to make a rubber - band and pvc pipe bamboo skewer launcher, and i pulled it back too far, making the skewer ricochet off the pipe straight into the side of my hand. Luckily, it didn’t hit anything that bled, but it hurt. I don’t think i could imagine that with a 10x weight arrow with a metal arrowhead and 5 times the speed straight to the knee would be like.
@@shhinysilver1720 Yeah, they're terrifying. A medieval archer would've likely used a bow with a draw weight of around 180lbs (80kg), usually resulting in the arrow travelling at about 200 feet per second (137mph). Most modern competition archers use bows with draw strengths of about 40lbs (18kg) and it tends to be more than enough to splinter targets and penetrate up to 6-7 inches (18cm) deep. Those targets tend to be made from a mixture of wood, construction foam and tightly woven straw so, I'd rather keep that away from my frail flesh. Lovely profile picture by the way.
No bow is going to be able to shoot through modern armor plates, but they can certainly penetrate "soft" armor as arrows are much heavier than bullets and the method soft armor uses to stop a bullet by distributing the force doesn't work well on a sharp point like an arrowhead. I think the weight is something media really gets wrong; a large arrow like that is a very beefy projectile that has a lot more weight behind it than even most rifle rounds even though it moves far slower. If it hits an unarmored person then as you say it's not going to be a little poke, it's going deep enough to hit vital things, that's what military bows were MADE to do!
@@andrewmoore7014 Actually you would see significant penetrative damage from a longbow to armor plates designed for low caliber rounds such as 9mm, handgun rounds broadly. Back in the day there was a ballistic test TV series called Battles across ages, where they'd test these kinds of ideas. A large draw longbow penetrated a series of protective plates, weaves and cylinders designed to fend off handgun rounds, and managed to crack some of the lower quality rifle armour. It was a fascinating show, highly recommend it if you can find an archive. Handgun cartridges are predominantly rounder in shape and have less penetrative capability than a rifle cartridge (ignoring the FN5.7x28), so something as sharp as an arrow exploits a weakness in lower caliber/grain plating that's designed more for dispersed stopping power. Like how an arrow would get stuck into wood but your fist would not.
Very interesting, that is a common thing about Skyrim indeed. I always liked the comment "i took an arrow to the knee" and a friend of mine pointed out to me that it could also be a metaphor for "getting married". So either it is like you said, due to complications of the wound that limits you to guard duties, or it is something more to it. But either way, i enjoyed watching your video! Thumbs up! :D
As someone who has an arthritic knee due to years kneeling as a gardener I can certainly testify to the pain from the knee joint. Heaven knows what agony an arrow could bring. As ever a GREAT video. Thanks, Kevin.
Diabolical. I can’t even imagine the pain and suffering. Quite illuminating presentation. When it comes to gaming. There are 2 games I think your son should at least show you. Both are very historical and a bit like real time strategy games. Imagine being above a diorama scene of models you built and being able to command them but also take direct control of individual units in a 3rd person or 1st person capacity. That combined with spot on historical accuracy makes for an incredible experience. There’s a WW2 game like this called Gates of Hell: Ostfront and it’s new addition Liberation. I’m a model builder and have never seen a WW2 game with such solid detailing and depiction. The second game is like that but set in the mid 14th Century in France. It also involves establishing a settlement from scratch that you build into a village, town, city and eventually a flagship medieval city. It’s called Manor Lords and comes out April 26th. Your son will likely know about it. Gates of Hell:Ostfront and Liberation, and Manor Lords. I’m not very into gaming but these games respect history and feel like a playable version of the photos, models and paintings we’ve grown up enjoying. Cheers 👍🏻
I would add Kingdom Come: Deliverance to the list of games he should check out. As far as I know it’s extremely historically accurate to 15th century Bohemia.
Confederate general A.S. Johnston got hit by a bullet to the leg during the battle of Shiloh, 1862. People saw that he was bleeding, but couldn’t figure out where from as his pants and boot seemed ok, until they removed the boot and saw that the bullet went behind his knee and severed the artery you mentioned. By then, he had lost too much blood and died.
A shot to the femoral artery is unrecoverable after about 5 seconds. Especially because that was before transfusing blood was available even if they closed off the wound.
Holy shit. Actual Tay Zonday watches Kevin? Small world. Stand near the Riverwood gate and one of the guards will say it within like 10 seconds. No clue how you missed that. Excellent video kev! Hope you both have a great day!
Hello Kev! Watching this awesome video reminds me of the first video I ever saw on your channel: the removal of the arrow from the face of poor Prince Henry. That video was deep and straight to the point! Loved the way you took aim at such a fascinating event in history; a real bullseye! The best part was the reenactment you did using the model. It left a real impression on me and has been stuck in my head ever since! Greetings from the Pacific Northwest!
I can affirm the knee pain, having had 3 operations for meniscus tears, with the last one, the calf muscle was so strong, it fractured the tibia, which was never even diagnosed nor treated, it was confirmed by the surgeon after a year long battle to get funding for the operation from the NHS, after the op was done and he was signing me off. Brilliant video once again 👏 👍 👌
So that guard potentially had some of his ligaments ripped apart and is still good enough to become a guard…must’ve been a hell of fighter in his prime damn.

Probably already said on here, but it is a euphemism for marriage. No more adventuring, stuck with a stable guard job that never takes you away from the city limits.
Thankfully, in Skyrim, mages who have studied in the Restoration school would be able to undo the damage and accelerate the healing process by magical means. In real life, you'd struggle, of course. The means you demonstrated by which people used to get on with their lives after leg injuries are inspiring. Great vid, thanks for putting the work in!
#1 Mages are rare. The player gets a skewed perception because they always start out with magic, but Mages are upper class individuals who have no time for the injuries of the poor. Temples offer healing, but it is far from free. #2 Most people don't have two gold to rub together. In a world where a common laborer makes 50 gold per day, and a single mead costs 55 gold, practically no-one can afford to hire a magical healer.
All the memes aside, top video Kevin! I had a motorbike crash about 10 years ago now and the physio to help repair the tendons in my knee got me interested in how joints and the knee works. Fantastic model and top quality video. Cheers a million!

Fell and knocked my knee on the pavement once. Pain was excruciating and my lower leg was numb for hours. Yet I'd only bruised the side of my kneecap. Agony to watch this, but very interesting. Thanks Kevin.
Fantastic entertaining video. Thanks 👍
you're ascribing historical bias to a totally fictional world with giant flying, fire breathing lizards, anthropomorphic cat folk, elves, orcs, magic schools, the undead and a form of demon.
All of a sudden I have a newfound respect for that Skyrim guard

As if Kevin wasn't cool enough, he goes and makes a video about a Skyrim reference using real-world practicality. Now that is how you make learning about history all the more fun.
Taking an arrow in the knee is a term used for proposing to a woman.
Thats not how it works
You cant visit school and say : " Omg all this boring stuff make me to not wanna learn this stuff omg so bad educator i got "

As much of a throw away joke as it originally was, I love that it was taken as seriously was. Diving into the lore of the game i did find that the saying was intended more as a "I use to be an adventurer like you, then I found my wife and got married".

Stick around. We're heading back to the dark ages.
That's why I'd rather have a Tardis. Can plan better.

@@alex4alexn l suffered a blood clot which tends to reach the extremities, if you are lucky.
I had 3 operations in total, due to infection, l was initially a 30% disability assessed, but with two failed operations to save my knee, l became a TK which is an upgrade to a 60% disability.
I have met other amputees, most keep their knees, even if they have both legs off, like Pistorius, believe me, he would not run without knees, or even walk.
As l say, l am lucky, the clot could have rested in my brain, or my lungs, and so l would be dead now, like there appears to be after the recent vaccinations.
I never took the vaccines, as there was an elevated risk of a clot, and having taken mine for the team, l encouraged those l loved to abstain too.

Also, sorry for your injury and - of course - thank you for your service.
@@deepdrag8131 it was my pleasure, most of the time
I'd imagine it's partially because if it's a big enough chunk, there would then be a void that wouldn't necessarily fill in, which could cause some serious problems after removal, from filling with fluids to infection, and would always be a problem.

I’m not sure if it’s meant to be an in-universe metaphor or a real life one though, since in Skyrim there is no down-on-one-knee ring proposals, and you just wear an amulet of Mara and basically confess to each other
So other than it being an out of universe joke from the Devs, maybe people use it in real life? Idk
Was going to comment this as well. Don’t know if I could pull a reference but it was always my understanding that an arrow to the knee was a marriage.
@@BenAnderson48i used to be an adventurer like you once... unmarried. But then I took an arrow to the Achilles.

I think I have never seen someone with looks that resemble something that he loves as much as you do, and I truly love watching it.
I swear, this Man is underrated and I am willing to bet a lot of people told him he was crazy when he started.
Keep going
Cheers, will do 👍
I used to be a UA-cam video watcher like you, but then I took a Kevin Hicks binge to the algorithm
😂
Love your channel, and Skyrim is my favourite game! Never expected the two together! Thank you for this!
Our pleasure!
1:26 thats the most accurate arrow shooting sound effect i have ever heard.
😂
Great video Kevin. I'm in my late 60's and have been playing Skyrim since it first came out in 2011. I am also familiar with knee injuries. I spent 13 months in a Navy hospital recovering from a Fib/Tib fracture above the left ankle and shattering the left kneecap. The kneecap was surgically removed (to many small pieces and they couldn't put in an artificial one ) and had a cast for nine months. Learning how to walk again wasn't a lot of fun and wouldn't wish a knee injury on anyone. Take care, Kevin and I'll catch you next time.
Cheers mate, take care 👍🏻
Richard Lionheart would like to know if "crossbow bolts and potential infections" are also included in the class' program.
I don t think poisoned arrows were common. At least i never read about them in any history book about medieval times
@unhommequicourt I don't know how common it was, but it was done.
Cheers, I appreciate it 👍🏻
My father tore a ligament a lot like what you're describing and he's never truly recovered from that.
How lovely, thank you 👍🏻
Sometimes it was really painful to watch 😅, but it's so interesting!
Amazing as always!❤
Not only that some people (like the Mongolian archers i believe) used barbed arrows that tore the flesh as they were pulled out, quite brutal
I love that after a decade we still want to talk about the arrow to the knee
Only that's inaccurate is that he wouldn't be walking normally for the rest of his life.
But not everyone can walk crippled, it'd ruin immersion.

I second KC: D
Great video, wish I had a history teacher like you back in school
Confederate general A.S. Johnston got hit by a bullet to the leg during the battle of Shiloh, 1862. People saw that he was bleeding, but couldn’t figure out where from as his pants and boot seemed ok, until they removed the boot and saw that the bullet went behind his knee and severed the artery you mentioned. By then, he had lost too much blood and died.
A shot to the femoral artery is unrecoverable after about 5 seconds. Especially because that was before transfusing blood was available even if they closed off the wound.
1862*
Thanks, it's corrected.
I played about 300 hours of Skyrim and did not hear this line 😳🤷♂️

Cheers for that 👍🏻
I can affirm the knee pain, having had 3 operations for meniscus tears, with the last one, the calf muscle was so strong, it fractured the tibia, which was never even diagnosed nor treated, it was confirmed by the surgeon after a year long battle to get funding for the operation from the NHS, after the op was done and he was signing me off.
Brilliant video once again 👏 👍 👌
So that guard potentially had some of his ligaments ripped apart and is still good enough to become a guard…must’ve been a hell of fighter in his prime damn.
true, full respect to the guard
Kevin your video on Tudor priest holes got me hooked as well as my family. You’re getting 2 teens into history which isn’t easy. You do a fantastic job bringing history to life! Please….more castle videos!!
Cheers Daniel, I used to take my history workshops into schools until a few years back, and still do it remotely so I've got lots of experience with kids & teens.
I actually live in Canada now, but visit the UK each year if I can, and have some more castle tours on the cards for 2024.
Thanks to the whole family for watching 👍🏻
As someone who had tendon injuries from working out the pain for weeks was intense, i cant imagine having it hit by something like this, I cant overstate how painful walking was.

Amazing breakdown of the knee and the Skyrim guards famous tale. Never knew an arrow shot there could be so damaging. Half expected to hear Skyrim music crescendoing in the background. Awesome vid Kevin!

Glad to hear it! Thanks for the sub 👍🏻

I love that this guy is at least somewhat in tune with gaming culture. I was not expecting that at all.
The Skyrim guard actually took a sweetroll to the knee. Little known fact, well known suspician.
Meaning too many sweet rolls until obese and diabetic to the point of swollen joints due to the tremendous load bearing until a catastrophic injury.
What do you mean by that ? Restoration isnt even a valid school of magic
Even if a mage were able to fully undo the damage, the trauma of the pain experienced may be enough to dissuade further adventuring
@@loganrogers4560Not true. Divine restoration magic can resurrect the dead in Skyrim.
