As a fellow veteran, I understand where you are coming from. As I have gotten older, I have realized that we in fact do not own our land, we only rent it from the local government. When someone can take something from us because we cannot pay what they tell us to, we do not own that thing. Our Founding Fathers understood that property was a way to create wealth and liberty. We as a society have strayed far from what we are supposed to be. We are now working nearly 6 months or more per year just to pay some form of taxes. We are not free, we have the illusion of freedom.

You are right, and I agree completely. Its also listed as one of the pillars of communism in Marx/Engels Communist Manifesto. If you look at society today using that Manifesto as a checklist 7-8 out of 10 pillars have been implemented and degraded systems are the result. At one point people did have that right, but it was changed gradually following a Fabian based strategy. Its closer to a turnkey-tyranny than its ever been before.

It seems funny to me that the War Of Independence was fought because of high taxes . Now here we are with high tax systems and over regulated lives , soon we will asked to get a permit to pee ? The police are not regulated correctly, there are too many police departments over the country with no oversight, doing whatever they want because “it’s right , I say it is so it’s right “ attitude.
I could go on for hours , here in UK the police are regulated from the Home Office and we have independently appointed police commissioners , sometimes it is not perfect but we don’t have the problem with rogue police officers doing their own thing (well not very often )

@@gandalf2439 Your sentiment is understandable but it was less about taxes and more about the other intolerable acts that were regularly inflicted, coercion, lack of means to earn a living for oneself or ones children, complete lack of any due process or representation for those victimized. Private property seized... quite a long list, which have the same corollaries today.
Really, the taxes and the civilian deaths caused by the soldiers during the early protests of the time were just the straw that broke the camel's back.

My parents had put up a shed on their property, it was under the size required for a permit and followed set backs. A neighbor across the street complained that it "blocked their view of the lake" and my parents were forced to take the shed down. The people could have bought on the lake, but chose not to. They still had a view of the lake, it just wasn't as much as without the shed.
So, my dad took his old trailer, put sides and a roof on it and parked it where the shed was. It is the same size as the shed but is on wheels. The county can't do anything about it.

My professional licensing board in my state tried to strip me of my professional license over a mistake they made. (They put the wrong due date for a form on what they mailed to me) I would have lost my business, my home, and probably my family. It was retaliatory in nature and I almost took my life because of it when things looked the darkest. I finally got it in circuit court before a judge and he basically laughed them out of the courtroom and ruled in my favor. Was this the end of it? Of course not. They couldn't be embarrassed like that and they thought I would be running out of money to fight it so it went on appeal to the state Supreme Court....where I also won. All in all it cost the taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, it cost me $100,000+ and I almost ended it all because they were essentially ending my life as I knew it.
The government is horrible at every level.

I am in NC and have been a police officer for 29 years. I have a small cow farm in 2 counties. What I have learned over the years is that building codes are different from county to county and you really don't have the freedom to do what you want to do on your own land. The county owns your land and they decided what you can do. Taxes is like paying rent. If you don't pay your taxes they will take it. That being said, I have tried to do a few things and some counties tell me that it's not zoned for that. You have to get a permit for everything now. We, the people, are over taxed and over regulated. There are to many laws on the books and most laws are written by the insurance companies. Our freedoms are slipping away.

      Very well placed quote.
A man brought a gun directly to the front door of his home.
Presence is the foundation of force. Meaning the clown in a cop costume went straight uo in his personal space, in front of his wife & kids (maybe) and he made sure he saw his gun.
If orders are not followed, the punishment is up to and including death. (he literally trains for the death outcome)
Then he begins the video with statements of love, respect & trust for such clowns in costumes.
I guess when you pee yourself in front of your family and allow evil to have its way upon you and your family in the security of the home...
If a man shows up on your porch with a gun to talk to as a friend, you tell him to leave and come back as a friend without his gun.
Friends don't have conversations where if you don't say and do it right, they kill you.
Well your quote, in my opinion, says a lot. A read & reread quote.

At least four of the 10 were grossly overweight! Three women with butts wider than any chair in the whole building and one guy that was just plain fat! Our military is a joke, there is simply no way those four people could pass a fitness test, none at all.

Fellow Vet here also living in NC. I bought a property (a few acres) a few years ago, the property had 2 homes on it (one built back in the 80's) and a good sized stand alone garage. There was a trailer on another part of my property where the garage was that had been removed before I bought the property, however I still have a septic and separate electric meter there that was for the trailer and garage. The older home from the 80's had an attached garage as part of it's footprint. When I decided to make repairs/improvements to the small house I was told that I could not use it as a 2nd home nor could I change the footprint of the structure. Keep in mind that this small home also has it's own septic system but it's powered by the main house (not sure why they did that but it is what it is) They had passed a law in my county that said you can have only one permanent dwelling on your property(no matter the size of the property), but my small 2nd home was grandfathered in because it was an existing home when I bought it. However, I was greatly restricted on what I could do with it....even to the point of repairs to it. Nearly every contractor I hired for repairs asked me why I was even talking to the county, they said they make trouble for everyone. Nearly ever single one of them said most people don't even tell the county what their doing and they don't ask for their permission because of all the trouble and grief they cause. So now my small home is just sitting there half finished being used for storage because of the county regulations. To be able to use this home as a residence (for example- an in-law suite/house) I would have to subdivide the lot, change the electric so that it has it's own meter and many other things besides....It is frustrating that some government office, who doesn't live on my land, has any authority to tell me what I can and cannot do on MY land. Especially in homes that have been there for over 40 years. I feel your pain. Thanks for serving brother!

    • @Blonders777
      @Blonders777 7 місяців тому +2

This is the best comment I've seen., don't ask the county first...do what you want and because it was all bought and you keeping with the same footprint, they should not be able to do anything. They can't see a lot of what we do anyway.
That said, I'll just do research on county rules and regs, and not call them and ask anything. Every form of government, and insurance companies and medical, law, everything, just out to make a buck off the people. But we do have to remember, no matter what, our property isn't ours, it sucks, but it's true. Thousands of ways it can be taken. So I choose to just do like the Stoney Ridge guy did, try to do right, call em on it, but just enjoy it while we can. Don't let their crap... crap on our days! Im also retired AF. And homeowner.

A beuracratic city officer kept calling us that our yard was called in (anonymously) by a neighbor as having 'clutter' and threatened us with misdemeanor criminal charges if not cleaned up. I thought it was a mistake as our yard was pretty well cared for but my wife (pregnant at that time) is terrified of authority and immediately went out to make sure it was pristine (in late pregnancy). Fast forward a few weeks and we get another notice that we were about to be cited for failure to comply. This was ridiculous and we called to say they had the wrong property. They were pretty condescending and said they definitely had the right property. We had to make a few more phone calls and invited authorities each time to come out and inspect the property themselves (seemed an appropriate ask when being threatened with criminal charges site unseen but there was incredible resistance and condescension from city authorities). When they FINALLY came out to inspect the property they immediately found it was the wrong address and gave a weak apology (and also found no 'clutter'). Government beuracrats can be very lazy and power drunk. Don't get railroaded as many of them don't care.

I looked on Google Earth and it looks like the only thing left are the church and cemeteries. I liked all the home bars in Jessup, when I visited. People just made bars on their homes in residential neighborhoods.

I’m in Washington Co. Utah. My father won a bid to cut logs from/on Cedar Mountain (Iron Co. Utah)
He cut the logs, then bought a mobile saw mill. This was in 1984. He built his house. He was newly retired at that time. In 1996 the house caught on fire up stares. Grandchildren with matches. The roof was severely damaged, the water from the firefighting severely damaged the floor up stairs/ ceiling for downstairs. The city inspector came over and told him he couldn’t repair the roof and ceiling/floor because the two by fours hadn’t been inspected. My dad knew an inspector and talked to him about it. The inspector said he could only inspect wood that came through the plant. The mayor told the inspector the roof could be replaced.
When we did the log cutting, building your own home was legal. The laws changed by the time of the fire.
We decided a lot of laws are for control, and for job security for specialization.
When passing laws, it would be awesome for 5 laws to be taken off the books. More laws, less freedom.

I had a new neighbor come down to my house and demand to see my ponds. I did this like you. I followed every regulation. I had to obtain a mining permit to dig a pond. An hour after I told the new neighbor to get off my property, the cops were at my door with a complaint against me. I nicely explained what happened and if they had any questions, all my designs were filed with the township and county. Most of my neighbors thanked me for putting in the ponds because they hold back the water in the spring and nobody’s home has flooded in 10 years. I want to be left alone. I also don't believe we should have to pay taxes every year on property we paid taxes on when it was purchased. On that note we don't pay taxes on food we purchased last year. I have no problem paying a tax upon purchase but to be made to pay continuously is insane. Also your property taxes shouldn't go up just because someone says your property value is more. Property taxes should be set when purchased. When property is sold then the tax evaluation may change for the purchaser. But all that being said, it's all theft just like insurance.

I would put up for consideration that the "bad actors" conduct, EVEN if it put's people at risk, doesn't necessarily warrant laws and red tape. While on one hand I'm persuadable to the rights of each community and state to create their own regulations, to have reasonable ones, I'm also otherwise very much libertarian leaning. Basically, desiring of the max freedom and protection of each of our' rights as described in our nation's founding, and the fact that our rights don't end where other's fears or even reasonably concerns for their safety on my land, begins. For ex. , I think instead of enforced building codes for private property, there should be a voluntary system of such, with certificates those who seek them, can obtain. That if you want to ensure you don't enter a building that's not certified, you look for the little plaque that could be, say, by each entrance of a certified structure, and avoid entering or standing near it, if it doesn't have one. The exceptions could be very tall things that would land on the neighbor's property if it fell, or things with moving parts up in the air, like a windmill, or that catch wind, like a sail. But, draw the lines back further, making risks ( which we are free to not enter into) no longer crimes, and putting the responsibility back on the people - for a free, sovereign people as the US denizens are supposed to be, that's where it needs to correspondingly be - . Raw milk, building codes, lots of things fall into this. Joel Salatin wrote back in the 1st year or so of his blog about this topic, giving a lot of comparison stats between us and Mexico. in Mexico's favor.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I've been in construction in ILL ANNOYS just West of Chicago, for 36 years, and have owned my own business for 27 . EVERYTHING now requires a "permit" including installing a concrete patio, (of which concrete is my field of construction) which is ridiculous and only a money grab from the local municipality, in my opinion, as it has no structural relevance to a home/building's integrity. That being said, I am under the impression that permits are not in place to protect you, as the homeowner and initial builder of the home/building, but to ensure the next homeowner that the building was built within code, and insures that the building will be safe for occupancy to any subsequent homeowner.
I believe there are at least 40 different inspections during a new home construction near me, that is made by and signed off by a building inspector, to make sure the contractors are following current codes. I'm not so sure you are paying for "authorization" to build on your lot, as much as the Permit fees are generally used to pay for the code enforcement official to perform his job, Engineers/Architects to review your plans with the County, and insure they are up to code specs. Like Maury mentioned, bad actors are what causes good people to pay extra (permits/fees, etc.) when building a home/building.

We bought our house many years ago. The guy who originally owned it built a shed - about 6' x 10' - on a concrete pad. When we were landscaping we called to have the gas and water lines marked. The shed was built over the gas line. The city people sent us a notice for us to remove the shed. Apparently it had not been permitted. Good for him. I didn't care. We responded to the city that it had been inspected prior to us buying it so it is now grandfathered. They had no choice but to agree. It helps to have good lawyers on my client list.
One of our arguments was that if there was a gas line problem, we could just put in a new gas line that routes away from the shed. Why they originally approved to have water, gas, and electric going in three different directions is beyond me, but this is the silly, stupid system that we have here, and it make life more interesting.

I'm a disabled veteran and a retired Police Officer. I live in a town in Kansas. My house sits on 3 lots. I wanted to build a garage/shop on the back lot. You would have thought that I wanted to open a sewage pit or something. I tried doing everything the right way. Instead of using a platted road right-of-way to get to my new shop, they wanted me to pour a 180' long concrete driveway with a 25 degree incline from the front of my house to the shop. No way would I be able to get my truck and trailer up that. I explained that according to their own code that would be in violation. They then said that I could not use the platted road unless it was built, or I had a "special use permit". I pointed out to them that there was a fire hydrant at the corner of my rear lot. I asked them how a fire truck could get to it then. I've seen fire trucks pull behind my home to that hydrant to "test" it. After 6 months of back and forth, I got my City Council to actually come out and look at my property. The finally grew a pair and over-rode the Code Enforcement minions and issued me a "Special Use Permit". It requires that I maintain the easement and keep it open to Public Utilities and City Vehicles. I had to put down a road base and gravel before I could get my building permits.

Buying a lot and paying the fees is like $400k before you even build a home. Meanwhile all the boomers voting for this crap are living in houses build on quarter acer lots, they think all the fields need to stay fields forever and no one is allowed to build anything other than a mansion because they think that will rase their home values. Josh, my story is kind of like yours. I served 20 years in the USAF myself. I live in NC also, but east of you a couple of hours. After retirement i had built a 30 x 35 metal building. After having everything permitted and inspected and building completed i received a call from the head inspector that he didn't have a signed off permit for my electricity to the building. He wanted to come out and reinspect what had already been inspected by a inspector that used to work for him which was the one that had inspected my electrical work. Well, i thought about his request for a couple of moments and told him no. I told him that i could not have gotten power turned on by the electric company without a signed permit. I further iterated that because his previous inspector misplaced or whatever he did with it wasn't my problem. My conversation with him was respectful but to a point that i was not going to be reinspected for something that had already been done. He agreed to what i was saying and never heard another thing about the issue.
Yes, to answer your question, our rights are being infringed upon more and more on a daily basis. I have since sold the previous property and bought another. Well, the property i purchased i could not build a building upon until i built a residence on. The restrictions on this property is i can not put just any dwelling on. It had to be a stick built home. Again, i am being heavily restricted on this property. It is my property, not the city or the county's! I don't live in a subdivision, but being treated as such. It's BS!
So, yes! Our rights are being trampled on by others. Regulated to death. Sick of it!

I'm in what used to be a hidden quaint town in North Florida. When my parents passed away, the drama of the county always trying to cause issues passed to me. Their latest bs was literally waiting until the last minute - after months of me asking for the new tax bill - to send us a bill so large that we had to go into more debt to pay it. Oh they had reasons why it took literally over a year. But they'll always cover their rears. i used to be a civil purchasing secretary. i've seen some things. They want to flatten our neighborhood to build homes only people with more money than us can put in. They recently voted to take away the ability for young teens to drive golf carts. They rezoned our rural area and took away even more rights.
We could've fought back if more people had went to the council meetings. You gotta fight back. An email? A phone call? Yeah. I saw what they do with those. They filed that these things were received and ignored the complaints. SHOW UP AT THESE THINGS. IT DOESN'T TAKE VIOLENCE TO STAND FOR OUR RIGHTS.
The only time anyone should care about your septic tank is if it's a hazard. Whomever called on you wasn't being honest, that much is clear.

As an Army vet and electrician, I do understand exactly how you feel. Ag buildings are treated special under the code. As soon as you said "occupy" or "habitable" the rules, tax code, and bureaucracy suddenly changed. An ag building can be whatever you want. Add electrical, and a basic ag permit with inspection is required. As soon as you say "occupy", the value goes up, the taxes go up, and other things are required. Smoke detectors, fire walls, minimum separation rules, and of course an occupancy permit. You can do an ag building on a housing permit, but you can't do a house on an ag permit. If you occupy an ag building without an occupancy permit, the local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) will red tag your building. Sounds like you need to change your permit, get the required inspections and assessments, and follow the instructions as if it were a house. You can also just stop talking about ever sleeping there. When / if the time comes you decide to occupy the building as a residence, file a new permit to bring it to the minimum standard. In the meantime, post a sign that no overnights are allowed in that building.

There should have been a record of the permit request, a record of the inspection request, and a copy of the results of the inspection. The fact that they had no paper trail at all means that somebody was remiss in their responsibilities.
But as you indicated, the biggest question is, why so many regulations? They always say its for our safety, but it seems like it's for control.

Josh I had a somewhat similar experience with my local town, when I say similar, I mean, I tried to be proactive and do things right.
I was going to replace my backyard privacy fence, doing it myself taking 1 section at a time. I made appointment with building inspector, sit down with him after I paid to have my property surveyed so I would know exactly where my property lines were. I told him of my plan and wanted to know how much the building permit was, I provided a copy of the survey and told him that I was going to move it back 3 feet as is was 8 feet off my back property line, his response was, I do not need a permit if I am replacing an existing fence and moving it should not be an issues. So I thought ok, step 1 down and now I called line locate to mark lines as I am trying to be the model citizen and abide by the rules, they come out locate lines now I feel I have done my due diligence and can begin.
I run my straight line across the back and start digging my holes for fence posts, set them, wait about a week to do next step as I was doing this on weekend, all the time all city vehicle and personnel could see the work. I then run my stringers and then begin putting my boards up, do the shadow box effect, from time I set my post until time I completed was about a month, 2 weeks after completion I get a call from building inspector, yep you guessed it, he said I had to move fence as it had to be 8’ from property line, I reminded him of our conversation at first he tried to deny until I told him I recorded it, but he still didn’t back down on his request, so I requested to be put on the next city council meeting and it was granted. I presented my case and explained I was never trying to violate any codes and followed the best of my knowledge the right way to do things, the mayor asked the assistant as the main building inspector happen to be sick about the situation, the assist informed the mayor that my fence was not the only one that was less than 8’ from line, mayor requested survey, concluded about 8-10 fences would have to be moved. I was informed if they ever have to dig up sewer lines my fence may have to come down if they cannot get their equipment back there and Informed them, I drove down behind there wit an F250 super duty ford truck.
One final note the city attorney took a jab at me that I should have known I needed to be 8’ in on property line, my response was simply this, “with all do respect to mayor and council, as a citizen I come to an official you hired to keep me straight and in line as far as building, I set down meet with that official, I offer to pay for a permit, I am informed there is no need and it is not a problem to move the fence, I interpret that as I am good to go and would gladly play the recording for everyone to hear if they would like. It was quite and they declined the playing of the recording. The building inspector retired a month later. Baldwin County Alabama

You didn't mention it, but most likely there was a sewer utility easement, typically 20' either side of the sewer line. These easements show up on the engineering plans, and should also be visible on the GIS that Planning & Zoning and Code Enforcement have available to them. I was Assistant City Engineer in my local town and worked with the City Attorney on clarifying these exact issues for land owners. Good for you standing up to your City Attorney. His comment should have been directed at city staff instead of you.

Josh, there's also another possibility as to why you got called in: years ago, we were trying to find someone to finish our unfinished basement for us. There was one fellow who came over that we interviewed, who later on did not respond to us, despite repeated attempts to contact him. We tried several times over a few day period, trying to get a quote. As we were wanting to get going on the project quickly, we ended up going with a different contractor.
Right after the work got started we had police show up to see if we had a work permit for that job (which we had since the contractor we hired had pulled it). From what I remember, the police told us that someone had called it in! Now we were on very good terms with all our neighbors, so I seriously doubt it was one of them.
But I began thinking about that other contract who never returned our calls. I ended up actually suspecting that he was the one that called us in. I don't have any proof. Just a hunch... something didn't feel right about him. And we never heard back from him, although I believe I did leave him a final voicemail telling him that we were going to go with someone else.
All that to say, if you interviewed multiple contractors for the electric, and gave the job to one (while another one thought he should have gotten it), it's always possible he could have called it in just to provide harassment. There are wicked people in this world, as you well know.

If anything I would understand if you don’t pay taxes then you lose access to firefighters (if not volunteer fire dept) or police/etc since they are paid from tax income but you should never have your property that you bought and paid for taken away. And permits are just a way to force you to let the government know what you have and are doing on your land and gives them a “reason” to watch everything you are doing consistently just to make sure you are doing what the permits allow and then fine you even more money if they think you do anything other than that and cause a ton of hassle until you PROVE otherwise. Like you said, all good people but the right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing and at the end of the day it cost me an additional $2500 on my permitting process than it should have.
What was so frustrating is everyone (friends and family) told me I should’ve just left the county out of it and told them it was an ag building and not let them on my property, but like you, I just wanted everything to be done right and to code, and by doing so, I felt like the county, and the bureaucracy took advantage of me and delayed my project as well as cost me thousands extra

Purchase a measly book that contains code pertaining to property in your state. You will find exactly what I am talking about.
While you go about your business inviting these code idiots in, they are trained to look into all kinds of other “ordinances” which are not laws that pertain to you on your private property. You’d be surprised at what they can find inside a wholesome law abiding ignorant persons home.

I live in NY state. :/ You darn near need a permit just to think. Now that I contemplate that, it explains a lot of things around here. We live in a small city that has delusional problems of grandeur. Back in Feb. of 2022 my 1 1/4 car garage decided to commit suicide. Actually it gave up on holding up the snow from the last winter storm, that had just dropped on it. With out delay, the neighbor behind us felt the need to inform city hall that our garage had clasped. In a bought 4 days we received a letter stating that we had 2 weeks to clean up or fix the garage and bring it up to code. Talk a bought, the need for a barn raising party??? So I sent off my own letter to city hall. I explained that we did not have the money to scrap the garage at this time. Besides its mid winter! Its to cold to go out side and play "Bob the builder". That and it was also not safe to do in this weather, you know snow and ice. Then around a month and a 1/2 later I get yet another letter. stating that we had 2 weeks to fix the garage and bring it up to code, and any further delay will result in a $2,000 fine. So I fire off yet a second letter to city hall. I politely remind them that the ground is vary muddy from all the snow melting and it would not be safe to scrap the garage until the land has hardened up. So as soon as the ground firms up, I'm out there with my trusty Sawzall making big pieces and parts into many smaller pieces when the code enforcement dude and a police officer arrive on the scene. I am then presented with a "Stop and Desist order". I'm looking at them like ?!?!?!?!?! So I explained that the fine folks at city hall demanded I get the garage clean up. So I was fallowing orders from city hall. I then presented them with the letter from city hall. Code enforcement dude, says yes, that's my signature on the letter and it is from our dept. The police officer then looks at the code dept. dude and says, well that takes care of that. He is just fallowing your orders. The code enforcement dude then states that I do not have a permit to tare the garage down. I stair at the code enforcement idiot for a bit. I then explain to him him that I have 2 issues with that. 1). As you can see, the garage is already down. That work was handled by the snow. Whether the snow needed a permit or not is beyond me. You should take the permit issues up with the snow or mother nature. As I have no control over them. Maybe you fine official like folk will have better luck with them. 2). It the official letter I received, the one I just handed to you and you admitted was from your office, said I was "ordered" under the penalty of a fine to get this cleaned up or brought up to code in two weeks. I am just fallowing the official letter you sent me. And I'm fallowing it to the letter. The letter did not say a word a bought needing any permits. Why would I need a permit if I was so ordered to do so by city hall? At this point the police officer is grinning from ear to ear. He knows where I'm going with this. So I let out a sigh. I then place both my hands in my pockets. I then looked down and began to rock back and forth on my heals. After some time, I looked up and said, well then here is what I'm going to do. I'll except your Stop and Desist order now. Then I'm going down to city hall and I'm going to speak with the city court clerk and file a law suit on you for harassment. I'm also going to ask to see the judge and get a restraining order against you and your code enforcement Dept. due to harassment. Because it will be a case of harassment, I'm sure the court will order you to stay away from me and not bother me until the trial. So we should get this all cleared up by, say the end of summer. That is if we are lucky. So the ball is in your court. Option 1) you can get in your car and go away and I can resume to carry out the orders in the letter. Or option 2). We settle this in court. Keep in mind that I am NOT physically tearing down a garage. I'm cutting up a wood scrap pile and disposing of it. I'm fairly sure the city building codes dose not say a word a bout needing a permit to clean up a scrap wood pile. Imagine the bind that would put the tree trimming business in? Rest assured that I will also be submitting photos of the wood scrap pile with my law suit. I'm al so sure that my attorney will be asking for restitution for dumpster rental and any other nifty things he can dream up. So what was the outcome? The garage, I mean, scrap pile of wood turned in to many smaller fragments and jumped in a dumpster and went away.

He informed the foreman that one concrete wall needed a 1/2 hour fire retardant coating. The foreman replied that the wall was 12 feet thick with 2 inch rebar on a 6 inch grid and didnt need any kind of fire resistant coating. The inspector got out his little book of codes and showed the foreman the code. The foreman took the code idiot around the corner, through the 4 ton steel door into the reactor containment room and again said no coating needed, that that wall was designed to hold a reactor core if it went nasty. Code guy said he didnt care, it had to be coated before he would buy it off. The foreman, using common sense, told the code idiot to GTFO of his shop, he will have the corporate lawyers pay them a visit. Several months later I came back for another inspection. The shop was in full production and the wall was coating free. This was at the old Satsop Nuclear site that was never finished.

About twenty years ago in Tennessee my father and I built a house on my land. Our problem was the septic tank. We did all the right things getting the permit and paying lots of money to have them come out and tell us exactly how it had to be put in. The ground in Tenn is mainly clay dirt so we had to have a very long drain line that was stretched out back and forth across about an acre or more. We had the right people come to install it and it was a lot of work. It got done but before you can fill all the lines in you have to have it inspected. Thats where the problem came in. The inspectors just would not come out. After about three weeks there was a big flooding rain that came and well filled in most of the lines. We called and reported it and still no one came. two months later they came and by then and all the rain the lines were about filled in. Even though you could see all the lines were exactly where they had told us to put them we have to pay the installers to come back out and dig it all up so the inspectors could see we used the right lines and how it was supposed to be like rocks for drainage. etc. Cost us a lot of money. We checked with a lawyer to see if we could do something, but the code law is the code law no matter what mother nature did we had to make it where they could inspect it on their time. Tell me that ain't some BS. I no longer live in Tennessee and sold the house many years ago.

I live in a small town in northeast Arkansas. Our problem here is that we don’t have enough rules and regulations. People can literally do anything they want to on their property here in the city limits. Including building any kind of a big metal building in their backyard. Swimming pools in the yard without a safety fence around them. Motorhomes trucks junk you name it. They’ve got it everywhere. When we moved here 40 years ago. Our neighborhood was very nice. But it is really going downhill. I have called and talked to every mayor that has been in office in the last 20 years. my front yard now is flooding because my neighbor refuses to clean out the drain under her driveway. She won’t do it and the city says it’s not their problem. Everywhere I look now out the windows there are sheds going up storage sheds, she sheds, he sheds tool sheds and it looks like there is no stopping them. Mayor says they can do anything they want to. It’s their property. Have one guy that lives right across the street from the courthouse here. Put up the most horrendous looking Halloween decorations. That was last year. Then he put up Christmas decorations without taking the Halloween down. Now I think he’s decorating for Easter and the Halloween is still up. In cases like that I really think we need some restrictions. And now his yard looks like a used car, truck and boat and motor lot.sometimes restrictions are necessary. Because there are a lot of people out there who are not real bright, and have very poor taste. My pursuit of happiness has been taken away here because of what everything looks like.

When I lived in Philadelphia, my next door neighbor called code enforcement because he didn't think I was picking up my pet waste quickly enough. It got picked up every evening after work, and the entire back yard, which was all concrete except for an 18 inch border where I grew veggies, was washed and scrubbed once a week, weather permitting. When I talked to the code enforcement officer, I asked if compost piles were allowed. She said yes. So I started composting all the dog waste in the corner of my yard closest to his bedroom window. It was a row house, so it was literally a couple of feet from where he slept.
When there were no additional complaints after 6 months, I stopped doing that. Eventually I got to know him, and except for that incident, he was a really nice guy. Guess he just had a bad day that day.

He called authorities who have the power to fine me, take my dog, have me evicted, and even prosecute me. So yeah. I gave him six months of bad days to teach him to mind his business, exercise better judgment, and think about the consequences of his actions before speaking. It's a lesson most men should learn by the time they are that age.

Is this all from a neighbor who has never met you and is acting on their own fears / anxiety? I
Live in California and without the same moral values and close relationships with our neighbors, we would have the same problems. I believe many problems arise because people don’t get to speak to one another face to face. Emails provide miscommunication because it leaves out the writers tone and personal details (tone of voice, sarcasm). Did the code enforcement personnel receive a written message / legal form that made him carry out his task to visit you? Since this code enforcement already knew you….? Do you have the right to investigate the source of wu h complaint to learn maybe this all started by a new neighbor who just needs you to be the bigger person and introduce yourself? I grew up with my neighbors being over 20 acres apart but my Dad ( law enforcement officer himself) made sure to meet all neighbors to gather information about each one to know when certain activities by any neighbors was innocent or suspicious/illegal so he can keep me safe.
I pray God heals this person’s wounds who thought making a formal complaint was the only choice he or she may have had and after watching your video will come fourth and make amends for their mistake in how they handled their own actions.

He asked if he could build a barn and they said yes, of course, you can build a barn. So, he built himself a barn that looked exactly like the split level home he originally asked for. They paid him a visit much like yours. He showed them the inside which housed some cows and horses. Hay was stored upstairs. It was a barn in all respects. Many years later he slowly finished off the inside and lives there now just fine. Other people built houses around him and nobody bothers him about anything. The owner is responsible for the bill. Take a guess what happens to me if I don't pay. My power is shut off. Every time I do anything on my land there seems to be someone who decides they don't like what I'm doing and will make a cowardly call behind my back. Like you, I follow the law and have my permits but having someone come to check is infuriating. The permits were supposedly put in place to protect us but from what I can see it's just an income stream for my township and county. I've literally had 2 separate electrical inspections (for new services) where the inspectors never inspected a thing. One never left his car and the other stood on the front porch and never entered the home. If I'm following the law and paying for a permit I expect the inspection to be done by someone who knows the code and at least looks at what they are inspecting.

My uncle built his own house in the 1940s. A great house. All kinds of good stuff. Around 1965, he wanted to convert the garage to an apartment for his mother-in-law. He wasn’t able to get a permit because he wasn’t a licensed contractor.
My uncle had a very distinctive voice and he raised the level a little bit as he was arguing with the people over at the county. Someone who knew him and had a good bit of authority came over to see what the fuss was.
Times had changed and there were new regulations, rules and so on. My uncle’s friend filled out the paperwork so my uncle would be a plumber, and electrician, and all of the necessary sort of contractors for the purpose of this one contract. He did the conversion and it was very good. He knew how to do everything and, like any other contractor, his work had to be inspected. No problem, except for the new rules.

Ok, I get it. Be grateful you have one inspector. Living in the big city, I was adding onto my house to make it bigger and put in a garage. The plumbing inspector came after I had installed all the plumbing. He said an air pipe from the shower was wrong and that I could not have it the way it was. The electrical inspector came by and said it was incorrect that I had to change it. I contacted the county and they said I should follow what the current inspector said because he had been with them the longest. So I changed it. Then when the inspector came to inspect the roof, it was the same plumbing inspector . He asked why I changed it. I told him and he called the office and I had to change it back. So, I was supper pissed and called my attorney. My attorney called me two days later and told me that I was to leave it the way the first inspector who was the third inspector said and if it wasn't that way to leave it in the condition it was in. I told him the first and third were the same guy. It seems that the guy that was with them the longest was not aware of changes that were made and the new guy was fresh out of training and they were in a battle of who is going to get a higher ranking position and I was stuck in the middle. Needless to say, the first guy who was the third guy was right and the second guy was wrong.
So, you got it easy, believe me. In addition, we do not own our land and if you don't believe me, try not paying your taxes. Another thing, I would like to do in my new home is put up an antenna on my property to get better reception. The rules are that I can go no higher than 35 feet and it can't be farther than 1 foot from the house. If I could go 75, my antenna could see over the top of the mountain in front of me and I could get better reception like I did with a military pole antenna and my winegaurd on it. Nope, against the city rules, and its an eyesore. Too whom? I can't say said the inspector.
Now, in Cody Wyoming 5 years ago. You buy the land. Have a certified septic tank installer do testing, have the inspector witness a perk test, have the septic installer complete the system, have it inspected and when approved, cover it up and have that inspection done again. It was 150 bucks for the permit for the system. Then I said, how much for the house, she said that's it you're done. I said are they very quick about the inspections for the concrete, frame, electrical, walls, insulation, sheet rock etc. She said what inspection? I said well doesn't it have to be inspected? Honest to God this was her answer. Are you going to rent this right away? I said no! She said "well hun, we don't expect you to build something that you are going to live in that you would make so shoddy that it would burn down"!!
I thought, Oh My God. Commons sense does exist in some places.

What is with this concern of property value (why do people buy into it). Do people who use this thinking in regards to cars they own (that guy's car is rusty, dented & is covered with bumper stickers - he is bringing down the value of all the other cars in the road (not). Dumb thinking, it is irrelevant just as much as how some other property effects theirs. What next - That person's clothes do not meet code the pockets are all wrong & don't match the shoes they are bringing down the value of my fur coat (ridiculous). Who ever presents this (property value) thinking as valid fact needs to get a life.

This is a very sad situation, and government is sticking its nose way to far into our lives, and it needs to stop. I really feel sorry for you, as a two tour Viet Nam veteran myself , I feel you have earned the right to do just what you are doing, and doing it completely within the county rules, but somebody is jealous of you and what you have so they are going to try to make your life difficult. I do not know the county rules where I live, I am in a non farming type area, so I assume the rules are vastly different here. I wish you the best, and I do enjoy the channel very much Hopefully some of the other viewers will have the insight to help and answer your questions.

👋 Building inspector of a very large municipality here. We have a homeowners waiver that you can sign that allows you to do most of your own work, less plumbing and electrical. If you can pass inspection, you can do it. The reason for the regulations for licensed trades is because people die from shoddy work done by unscrupulous contractors. That being said, I also have to investigate complaints of things being built without a permit. It's almost always reported by a Karen neighbor. When I get those complaints, I NEVER write a citation unless I absolutely have to. Like a homeowner wiring an accessory structure in a very dangerous manner. I always try to work with people.l, especially because investigating unpermitted work isn't what I signed up for. I signed up to inspect structures to ensure they're structurally sound, and that they will be sound for the owner in 25 years. But even then, I bend over backwards to help people to build things correctly. As I tell people all the time, I'm here for the benefits, not to lick boots.

The fact you would even think about investigating as you call it a “Karen Neighbor” says you are the problem.

@@MrHantu666 I appreciate that. I've worked on both sides of the fence so I know how a bad inspector with a fragile ego can destroy your project, so I try to find a balance of keeping the contractor moving along without slowing him down and protecting the homeowner and the public. The trick is to do that without taking anything personally. My department is full of fragile egos and bootlickers that dream about stop work orders and citations, so I do what little I can to make whatever difference I can make for the public.

The problem is that most are not like you. I am also an inspector and I believe codes are out of control. The code inspectors I have worked with building a new construction house are ridiculous and call out every minor thing. Code inspectors should only be checking for major safety issues and nothing more imo.

    • @BureauATF
      @BureauATF 10 місяців тому +3

@@judahbrutus @judahbrutus I'm going to have to completely and wholeheartedly disagree. That's not the problem. What kind of inspector are you? A home inspector? Code inspectors are not OSHA inspectors and we're not home inspectors. Our job is to check for code compliance, not safety. Codes exist for a reason. What you may see as a minor issue might not be a minor issue to somebody else. People will throw a fit if I call them out for not having a continuous tie at a perpendicular joist/rafters connection because they think "it's just a rat run." No, its an unstable roof. You absolutely need wind bracing, wall/wall connections, correct portal framing, correct wood grades, so on and so forth. If you aren't a licensed code inspector, you just don't completely understand what we're looking for. If you aren't building a house to code, that's a problem with you, not a problem with the code. And that's exactly the purpose of the inspection. It's not to "bust" you, it's to check your work and give you a chance to correct it. The people that pay you are 100% expecting and wanting a house built to code, and it's your job and your responsibility to be knowledgeable enough to provide that to them. I hold an unlimited building license as well as a home inspectors license, so I know both industries, and they are absolutely not the same. There is very little overlap. Just because I work with people and assist them wherever I can and do what I can to make the process as painless as possible doesn't mean I'm allowing homeowners to get screwed over by not making sure their house is built properly.

In the 1960’s we had a dam built by the Army Corps of Engineers. Reason…to stop run off erosion through our land. Several of these dams were built along this 10 mile stretch to protect roads in the county from being washed out. We have all the paperwork, etc., given to us. This land is all dry land farming. Some years we get lucky enough to get enough snow and when it melts it fills up the area behind the dam. The “pond” will last up to 7 seven years before evaporation takes over and it dries up. We take advantage of this by stocking it with fish for recreational fishing. Couple of years ago some county agency came out and started asking all kinds of questions about the dam and the water behind it. We gave all the answers. Then Fish and Wildlife came out and wanted to designate it as a wetlands. Next came some alphabet agency wanting to know how much water was in the pond, where we were getting it from. Had to explain that. Next agency wanted to know how many cattle we were running on the place. None. Finally the Army Corps of Engineers who built the dam in the first place wanted to come out and inspect the dam. They had no record of them building it, so we had to give them copies of all the paperwork. What a bureaucratic nightmare. Finally, Fish and Wildlife came out again because they were concerned if the dam blew out, and the fish we put in there would wash 12 miles down to the river and put fish in the river not native to it.

Sorry for your experience. I have similar values. I have built in two locations. 90 acres In Granger County TN and 10 acres in Oakland County MI. I checked for permitting in Granger and they said "its your land, build what you want" but to live there you need a septic permit/inspection. In Oakland County MI, you need a permit for anything (such as a fence not on you property line???). The zoning is intense, with 10 acres, the max animals you can have is 25 chickens (an animal point system that makes no sense at all). I am 77yo now, so I will not move again. I will live and die on my 10acres (unless they jail me for some infraction - very possible! LOL). I have my gardens and chickens [may add some illegal rabbits some day] and that will have to do. We need to get smart about who we elect and how our kids are taught. Kids need to be taught critical thinking and not what to think. I worry for our future. Best wishes, Doug
