    We just confronted trespassers this past summer at our family farm. Had months worth of pictures of them but just couldn't catch them in the act. Finally did, and I understand completely what you said about the adrenaline pumping. I had many thoughts rolling through my head about how I would handle that moment, but they all go out the window in the heat of the moment. We got the sheriff involved and they got charged.
    What I wish I had done differently is call the sheriff BEFORE going and confronting them. Let the trespassers get all settled in and comfy, then let the sheriff roll up and see it in person. Hindsight is 20/20.

    So nice to have cameras on your property. My Neighbor had some one trash their windows in their car. It just so happened our camera got it all on our computer. Sometimes it difficult to get your own property without getting the neighbors, the people next to me have their front yard and my driveway covered and I have our
      Backyards and garages covered.
      It would have been much more expensive for us to buy cameras and just cover our own properties together we have 4 cameras, to cover the same amount of area without bleeding onto each others property would've taken 8, 4 cameras each. We also watch each others house, share garden vegetables and in the summer stand out and BS for awhile.

There has been so much thievery as of late and we were able to warn neighbors of the vehicle. Now we can have a neighborhood watch and share photos of potential threats. Cops said he no longer has them so they can't do anything. Another coworker was renting a house for his son for college (I think 3 kids shared house/rent). I'm an old woman who is a farmer. Been doing it for almost 40 years on my same Ozark Hill Farm. Trespassers are the one thing that still amps me up as much as it did 40 years ago. I used to keep a tall high headed American Saddlebred mare, and as soon as I heard someone in my back 40 I'd jump on her and gallop up there for a confrontation. Being on a horse.. the noises she made did not rouse people the same way my tractor motor does..plus she and I had some shortcuts through the woods where motorized things couldn't go. .I would race up there, crazy with anger, full of bad words, and not stop the horse until we were about 2' from them. By then she'd be real excited too, and blowing foam from her nostrils, prancing in place inches from their feet. It was exhilarating. Did it once when I was 2 weeks out from having one of my daughters. It would totally freak poachers out. It would freak recreational 4x4 fools out too. Now that I'm thinking about it.... I want a fresh horse. That one died when she was 37,

    Dealing with trespassers on my family’s Century farm of 278 acres gets my tail feathers ruffled. The scary part is not knowing the trespasser’s intention or state of mind. A local who was confronted by the county sheriff’s deputy ( seen trespassing by a neighbor who reported him) said he has grown up close to our property and felt the property belonged to the locals more then “THEM OUT OF TOWNERS” . LOL. My husband and I don’t live on the property but stay and work on the property about 50% of the week, weather permitting. This property has been in my family since 1837, yet I’m the out of towner. 😳We’ve been robbed, had pipes in the well house broken from someone trying to turn the well on. Broke into the house during one icy winter and lit the propane heater, and used up $300 propane. Finding a Meth cooking site in our woods( smelling it first) is a big worry. I’m sorry to say I don’t feel safe walking my property alone, so I keep my conceal and carry card up to date even though it’s not required anymore, because I don’t feel safe without my 38 special.
    You had me hopeful to a reasonable solution when you said “ off grid” security camera and T Mobile. Going to show my husband this video in the morning as we’ve been looking for a security system we can access when we are home healing up so we can get back to the farm.

      I know this is a very old comment but I used to feel your pain. It's a terrible feeling and I came close to selling my dream property years ago because of it. There is only one solution to it. You have to give in and let people ride dirt bikes, walk or whatever on your property, especially if you're not there full time.. take down your gates and no trespassing signs and let the word get around to the locals that people can enjoy your property but be respectful and don't mess it up etc. You will be surprised at the change! You will hardly have to deal with people destroying your property and having bad characters on it because local atv riders and just locals walking the acres will kind of police it for you.. you can not and never will police 100s of acres like it's your own 10 acre paradise. You are probably just like me spending more effort and time fighting off people on your land than you are actually enjoying it. If you have a lot of acres like we do you just gotta give in. The more you try to keep people out the more people of the worst kind come in. I'm actually a get off my lawn type guy and my wife was surprised I did this but it's just something to think about. I did this almost two decades ago and I've barely had any issues at all and trust me, I used to have terrible issues

    Growing up in Oklahoma our cattle farm had a lot of oil field roads running to the 3 wells we had on the property. The oil company put in cattle guards so the could check on the wells without having to open gates. One night we noticed an car in the lower area of the property and drove up on them. It was a guy and gal, and once they rolled down the windows he said he there were just talking and watching the stars and that he came out there with different people all the time - thought it was just open oil field land. The next day I returned to the spot and found a bunch of discarded condoms on the ground. So he had been using that spot for some time. Never saw him again after that.

One small suggestion, drill two 1/4" holes 2-3 inches apart to accommodate a zip tie to secure extra wire bundle to pod. Just a little extra protection from wind and animals that might keep wire from working loose or being damaged.

I do not use the subscription service, I just use the internal storage and the app to access video. I can watch live video and can access historical videos stored on the cards inside the cameras. I can very remotely use cellular to view the cameras also, no added fees or subscriptions. My set up needs to be within my wireless internet footprint, this works great for me. My units are black with black hardware and black solar panels. I like your idea of using the solar panels as a 'roof' for the camera units. I have been using for over a year and no problems. I can be at work and check the driveway or chicken coop. Another nice feature is the 2-way communication, I can hear and talk from each camera.

    Hey Josh, as a tech who works with outdoor technology, have your "service loop" (the extra cable you have) below the entry points to the devices. The solar panel is good, but any moisture which collects on the line including any which might collect on the back of the solar panel will follow the line into any and every opening. If the extra cable is below the camera opening, you reduce the chances water will run to the cable connection on the camera. Loved the info and looking at these cameras now. Thanks for the video.

    I like your pod idea, but just a quick tip from a wood worker .... set it up with the grain running up and down instead of left and right. Wood will expand and shrink with moisture perpendicular to the grain lines. By fastening it the way you did, big swings in humidity could crack the board. If you rotated it 90 degrees, you would not have that problem.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 роки тому

      hmmm....but even if I rotate the board...it's still gona dry out with the grain lines right? Why would the humidity affect it differently if I hung it up differently? hmmmm got me thinking buddy

    • @DustMite1937
      @DustMite1937 2 роки тому +2

      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer wood expands and contracts with humidity changes, and to a much lessor extent with changes in temperature. The movement occurs in two directions, radial and tangential. Of the two, tangential is the larger. If you look at a stump or sawed off limb, you will the the classic growth rings. Radial expansion/contraction is movement between the rings along a radial path from the center to the outside edge. Tangential movement is along a tangent to the rings. The third type of movement is longitudinal, which is from the bottom end of the tree toward the top, or from the trunk end of a branch toward the end of the branch. Longitudinal movement is so small that it can be ignored for most applications. If you look at the ends of most boards, you will see that the growth rings are usually at an angle relative to the surface of the board. Such boards are called "rift sawn" boards. If it is a "quarter sawn" board, the rings will be almost fully perpendicular to the surface. If it is a "plain sawn" board, the rings are almost parallel to the surface. A quarter sawn board will have less movement than a plain sawn one. A rift sawn will be somewhere in between quarter and plain sawn in terms of movement.
      For white oak, if we assume you made your pod when the temperature is 40 degrees F with a relative humidity of 40% and later in the summer when it's hot and raining, assume the temp is 90 degrees F and the humidity is 95%, the radial expansion will be about 3% and the tangential about 5.8%. So a rift sawn board like the one you used in the video, will see an expansion between the two mounting screws of somewhere about 4.5%. If the are 10 inches apart, that's about a half inch of movement. That's enough to loosen one or both screws where they are screwed into the tree. If you reverse the initial and final conditions, you would get the same degree of shrinkage which is enough to crack the board. The solution is to rotate the board 90 deg so that the two mounting screws are along the longitudinal grain of the board and you won't see any vertical movement. Also for the devices you attach to the board that use 3 holes, orient 2 of them vertically and while the degree of movement is a lot less since they are so close together, it will be a more secure mounting. I once made the mistake of mounting a plastic rain guage on a piece of white oak screwed to a fence post. The guage was mounted on two screws about 3 inches apart, but I had the long grain running vertical and there was enough radial movement to break the guage. The movement can seem to be too small to worry about, but it is extremely strong an something usually has to give. When I build furniture and have two pieces of wood screwed together with the grains running in different directions, I make one of the screw holes oval so that it can move without tearing something apart.

    I still think the deterrent value of a visible camera is counter productive, you can have a CCTV sign on a tree saying as much and keep them guessing from which direction they are being filmed.
    I'm a bit dubious about those wired connections too, it is a significant Engineering challenge to keep water out of anything, I would have that mounted inside a big bird box to keep the worst of the snow off.
    The battery is going to degrade in cold temperatures so it will be interesting to see how it does over Winter and in the long term.
    The Reolink Argus PT batteries are not replaceable but the ones on the Reolink Go PT are, so it's a consideration for the long term (>3 years) because they have a finite life.
    Cameras are really pretty essential on properties now, the days of being able to trust people to do the right thing are over I think, hopefully future generations will realise why it went wrong and not keep voting in the same people
