I have the weapons handling down. I started buying some gear…. I quickly realized that none of this mattered until I was in better shape.
I’m in my 50’s, overweight, and one year post op from a triple bypass. I’m on a number of meds as a result.
1). Been back to the gym for the last three months.
      2) doing increasingly longer walks/hikes with a back pack weighing 25lbs
3). Fixing my diet to try and get of the meds.
These three things are far more important than any other prep I have.
The reality is that most of us watching these videos could probably use a lot more PT for strength and endurance.

If you have Nods, Helmet and a Plate Carrier for civil unrest or invasion; but you don't have a shovel, an axe and water purification. Then you really need to rethink your preparation, entirely.

well the good news is if you have all that stuff, assuming you didn't go into debt for it, you're probably still able to afford a lot of food and stuff. And you already have all the "wish" items for most people. But yeah, you definitely did it out of order. We stacked a few months of food and stuff before I spent money on nods

To me, one of the biggest reasons to get into rifles/plate carriers and beyond into night vision etc, is simply that the more citizens who train and equip themselves with the true intent of the 2A in mind, the bigger of a deterrent it becomes, the less likely you're ever going to need to use that stuff for anything but training.
Absolutely agree that handguns and personal/family/home protection and medical training should be the priority if you're just starting out, but I'm very happy to see more guys taking it to the next level beyond that.

Stuff dudes don’t think about. Fitness is a big one. All the training in the world doesn’t matter if you can’t climb a flight of stairs to address the problem. Night fighting stuff…..your $10,000 nods are nearly worthless without an illuminator; and a good one at that. Training under nods is also extremely important. Depth perception, movement and being able to complete every needed motion using exclusively textile feeling is extremely important. There wayyyyyy more to it than just buying all the gear. Flat range training is great but you need something more involved. Get to a class that trains with sims/utm/force on force. Learn room/building clearing.

This video is exactly what I was attempting to get across to you before Jimsgoonlife. And its something I repeat regularly. Train how you live!
What do you have on when you are grocery shopping? How bout picking the kids? how bout a date with the wife? quick trip to the corner store.... THAT is what 90% of your training should be focused on.
So when I told you that the trainer you had was missing the fact that bringing the sights up to eye level isn't always a realistic idea... I promise you it wasn't from hate or anything like that.
I just want you to come to terms with the true reality of self preservation on a day to day basis.
I've been through too much for my experiences to be in vain. A rare life like mine needs to have the lessons spread to the good guys to make us all better.
I absolutely love your videos and platform, and hope to see more of this type of mindset from you.

Great video and thanks for sharing your ideas. Though I like the idea of chest rigs for most that may not be best for some. I only stand 5'3" and even for my height I have a short torso given my severe scoliosis, so for that reason I can just about forget going the chest rig option. What I've found works well for me is a cummerbund or gun belt setup. With a cummerbund setup, I've found that I can carry up to 8 rifle mags, 2 pistol mags, an IFAK with an extra tourniquet, a knife, a white light and a pistol. This still leaves the back side open so I could ride in a vehicle if I have to. I've also found that I can carry two small IFAK pouches, one at about the 4:30 and another at about the 7:30 of the belt which allows me to reach one with either hand while still leaving the rear of the belt or cummerbund open. I do this by having two double stack rifle mags on each side of the buckle, (4 on mags on each side) with two pistol mags on one side and a white light and and a knife on the other side, (each mounted on the rifle mags). The holster is between one of the rifle mags and the buckle on the internal belt, about where it would be for an appendix carry. What I like about this setup is the rifle mags stick out far enough for me to rest my arms on them so I can rest my back due to my scoliosis. The scoliosis is what makes my torso so short even for someone who only stands 5'3" tall. Since I normally appendix carry, this setup also keeps my pistol where it is for my EDC so the muscle memory is already there. Since I've never found a chest rig that fits me, plus with the condition of my back is such that the added weight on my torso is a real issue the belt seems to be my best option. I've also found that I can dawn a belt in less time than it takes me to dawn a backpack or chest rig, which could be important for a home invasion where seconds count.
Another idea if I have to be out in the heat for an extended period of time is to use an H harness to carry a water bladder. Yet another option which I think I like even better is to use a bladder pack that I can throw on quickly if the need to carry water should arise without having to buckle or unbuckle an H harness to the belt. That open space in the rear of my belt allows for the bottom of the water bladder to hang in that gap. Just another reason for leaving the rear of the belt free of gear. Now those last two options likely wouldn't apply for home defense but might for patrolling the neighborhood...
I know that's a long explanation of my setup but this might give some ideas for some of those such as myself who don't fit the typical mold. Sometimes we just have to get creative.
Thanks again for sharing your informative video.

My thoughts on the defensive aspect is to learn a striking or grappling martial art. I have been so into guns and once I learned good fundamentals in Muay Thai, I learned how to not hide behind my gun anymore. I have the confidence to attempt to handle any situation that may happen to me. Not saying its fool proof, but If I was cornered and had to fight, Ima breakout what I learned vs just pulling and shooting. In my eyes, weapon for a weapon. If they're unarmed then I'm forced to go hand to hand unless they give me a reason to pull. Muay Thai is great because its a mix of mild grappling and major striking. None of that pussy palm striking shit. Pure fists and elbows to the head and face.

Of all tips in the world buy a gun small enough to edc. I like the hellcat and m&p shield, guns that size are nice to carry. For me that is the biggest problem, I carry a hellcat all day and enjoy it. I was trying to carry a mr920 which is glock 19 sized and it was just a little to big for me to edc. Also no weapon light on my carry gun and no red dot either, dots get to dirty for me. I live in the real world were I'm being a dad working on my house and property (I have 15 acres) and that's just my two cents about edc. I can still throw down with my pistol and a spare mag in my back pocket. My full sized gun always stayed in the truck.

I specialize in mixed martial arts and it has saved my life three times. Once getting jumped in the hood it happens when you live there. The other two times were at work. Both times getting guns pulled on me. Working fast food jobs with everyone high stressed, workers, and customers alike. I have first aid training as well. Even used my training to save a boy, who stabbed himself in the gut, while he was sharpening it. I calmed him down, used a shirt cut in two, one to sintch the knife tight. The other wrapped around the top of the wound, then my bandana wrapped around his body below it to stave off blood loss. It took the helicopter 45 mins to get to us. The paramedics said he would have been doa if not for my quick action.

Great information. I would just add dont focus just on BJJ. Its competition driven. staying on the ground is not a good idea in an uncontrolled environment. Statistically speaking, bad guys run in packs. This means while you are focused on submissions, someone can easily run up and stomp the life out of you. Look into some real combatives. Food for thought or not.

This was awesome. Jim, I’m am curious about one thing - and it’s for the sake of discussion. Let’s say LVL 4 plates $100 a set. Would you prioritize a plate carrier, for the protection, sooner than a chest rig then or chest rig first for mobility?

I suggest a backpack (Vertx my fav) with a folding 8-9", 300 BLK pistol. You can take it most anywhere. If one is inclined to carry a pistol IWB, AIWB, OWB, CROSS DRAW, whatever.... it will be secondary. The back pack pistol is less convenient than an on the body wpn. IMO the bag pistol's attributes outweigh the on-body pistol. Whatever you choose Traditional/Heritage/Constitutional Americans are in trouble. Big trouble. Good luck.

I just run a plate carrier and a pasgt helmet. Can't afford night vision. I run a sig p226 open carry which is also my side arm while on the job, I work as armed security now so we have to buy all our own shit. I have a cpl but that's only to cover my ass when I open carry in winter and my jacket covers up my gun. I'm not a fan of the ar platform personally, I run hk91 as my primary and mp5 as a close range backup/home defense firearm. But yeah I jog 2 miles everyday before work and hit the weights twice a week. Staying in shape is not only imperative to my job saftey but also just good practice in general. As patmac says it's good for longevity, saving your life, saving someone else's life and kicking somebody's ass.

But Not a good idea to think your going to run out..then back into the situation with gear , the Guy's IN BLUE showing up WOULD MOST CERTAINLY MISTAKE YOU FOR THE BAD GUY ! . if you can't HELP on the spot (EDC), you can help others OUT or too cover that's All . The WORST thing you could do is let good intentions get you in trouble or killed . The Police have the entire weight of the Law and State on they're side . You on the other hand will loose everything, don't forget that ! Goodman.
