    I think the reason why i personally really like their relationship is because they aren't doing what every other relationship starts with: "looks". It is established from the beginning that Ryuuji looks like a scary guy; not really a "looker". So Taiga falling for him is solely based on his personality and character and not on his looks. Now, as far as Ryuuji falling for Taiga is more challenging to uncover, seeing as to normal people, Taiga seems like she's over the top and not a "likable" character, being as she has absolutely no skills, and she's aggressive. BUT that is NOT her REAL personality! Did anyone notice how Ryuji had no interest in her until Taiga's character developed, namely during the Christmas arch? Her true colors came out as being a very sweet and likeable girl who used her own money to buy orphans gifts. Why? Remember her reasoning -she wanted the kids to know someone cares about them, because she herself didnt believe anyone cared about her. She comes from a broken home where her family rejected her, then tried to come back into her life like nothing ever happened, for their own selfish desires. She was so hurt by that... So, she didnt want others to feel neglected and abandoned like she once was.... Ryuuji picked up on her deeds, and i think at that moment sparked something that was building from her growing character development. She exposed her true personality that only he got to see. Remember, Taiga didnt want anyone to know what she does on Christmas; a selfless act. This is one example out of a several that i can break apart. Ryuuji seeing that she put her own feelings aside to make him happy with the girl he was supposed to like, she sacrificed her own self's emotions for him... she loved him, but she ignored that for Minori and Ryuu so that they could be happy... that's true love right there... On the surface, the love seems one sided, but it's only because she has different ways of expressing it, which is perfect for guys like me and Ryuuji. (We have very similar personalities) And to me, that's why i LOVE this pair! It isn't a forced love. They gradually fell for eachother in a very natural way that is very relatable, esp to me who's had a similar relationship with a girl who was very similar to Taiga. When you tear everything apart, you will see why Ryuuji loves Taiga... He is a selfless person who found the absolute perfect girl for him. They complete eachother in every way imaginable, and for that, this is why they are my all-time favorite pair! :)

      Well, the thing is, Ryuuji has always liked Taiga and known what type of person she is. In Episode 2, he comes back to her because he realizes how kind of a person she is and feels the need to stay with her. Taiga fulfills the naturing side of Ryuuji. Before Taiga, Ryuuji felt lonely. His disposition prevented people from interacting with him, and his only real friend was Kitamura. Yet, it's through Taiga's interaction that he is pulled into this world where he meets Ami, Minorin, and all the other people. So besides liking Taiga as a person, he also enjoys the momentum and energy that she brings into his previously stagnant life. Taiga gives Ryuuji meaning.
      Ryuuji has always loved Taiga, growing to respect her character and finding her different sides endearing. After all, that's the reason why he feels compelled to take care of her and to spoil her. Ryuuji and Taiga are foils to each other, after all. But like Taiga, his feelings and recognition of those feelings lag quite a bit. Taiga clearly begins to notice her feelings by EP 14 (as she looks back pensively at Ryuuji) but doesn't realize what they are until 19. It's same for Ryuuji, him unconsciously actually loving Taiga and favoring her even over Minori but not realizing what the relationship is until Taiga makes him think earnestly about it. That's why it wasn't out of nowhere. It was always been there, just the scenario never arose for them to seriously consider how they feel about each other.

      i thing the development of romance between RYUJII and TAIGA starts at the end of episode 2, when TAIGA confess to KITAMURA. but both RYUJII and TAIGA. denies their feeling of each other according to ciscumstances.
      u all can see TAIGA begun realising the feeling for RYUJII from the pool arc, summerhouse arc and finnaly cristmas arc, and then suppress the feeling for RYUJII after the end of christmas arc. I apologize for the wall of text in advance~~
    ~~~Like you said, I love how this show's characters feel like actual people and not cut-out archetypes that the author/studio just threw in. It feels like you could meet people like this in real life.
    ~~~Animation wise, I already liked JC Staff a lot but this show made them one of my favorite studios. It might not look super extravagant on the surface, but it doesn't need to, and the animation does it's job so well and the colors are fitting 100% of the time.
    ~~~Music wise, I don't remember every song, but a good amount of them. Pre-Parade is great and for the longest time I disliked Silky Heart quite a bit. But as time went on and I watched it over and over I got to like it quite a bit, and appreciate it for setting the tone of the second half, making it very fitting.
    ~~~The dub - fucking superb. I absolutely love everyone's performance in it.
    ~~~Gotta disagree with you on Taiga. She's just best girl man. Ami is second and I never really got behind Minori's character all that much. She's good, don't get me wrong, but doesn't shine brighter than Taiga. However, something I like about all the characters is just how well they all work together, not only on their own.
    ~~~Also gotta disagree on Kitamura's arc, as I find it to be one of the weaker points of the show. Now, weak when talking about a show like this is still very strong compared to others (it's my favorite anime for a reason) but I feel like it's more of a dip in the line of Toradora's story versus other points of it.
    ~~~Side characters - couldn't agree more, love em to bits.
    ~~~The ending (SPOILERS) isn't really a surprise, in the sense that Ryuuji and Taiga end up together. It's sort of set up from the very first episode that that's what is gonna happen (think the 'there's something in this world that no one's ever seen' commentary from both characters.) It's not about looking at these two and wondering IF they will end up together, it's about watching for their journey and HOW they end up together, which is one point of the series even existing. In that sense, I think I might disagree about it being better not knowing that about the show beforehand, but I mean, you can kind of tell that they're going to end up together anyway. At least, I could.
    ~~~So, here's the thing about Ryuuji *suddenly* loving Taiga. I don't think it was sudden at all. It might seem that way, but through the course of the show we see both characters drifting more towards each other rather than the character they're *supposed* to like. I think the reason it seemed sudden is that Ryuuji was finally honest with himself after not being honest with himself for a good amount of the show. He built Minori up to be this amazing person that he loved, but he only THOUGHT he loved her. Sometimes, people just want to love someone and they can really think they do and it just won't be how they actually feel. They're tricking themselves into thinking that that's the case, and I think that's exactly what happened with Ryuuji.
    ~~~So you didn't mention anything of this but it's a point I praise about the show's ending. Again, SPOILERS. So some might say the whole 'arc' where they run away from home is dumb or even a sloppy part of the ending. However, I think it makes it much stronger. See, from the get-go, them running away from home was not a good idea at all, but it was sort of presented as one. However, they realize this about it and change their minds. I don't believe it was an error in writing, I like to believe that this was planned. They're 17/18 at this point and at this age you're gonna make some stupid decisions and running away from home was one for them. But along the way, they realize they fucked up, that this isn't gonna work, and came out of the situation more mature than before.
    ~~~I love the ending. I love it even more because of the fact that it exists in a sea of rom-com (and sometimes drama) anime that don't take the time to explore their own characters, wrap up, and do so beautifully and not lazily.
    ~~~There's probably much more to say, but I've already left a hefty wall of text. For good reason though, it's my favorite anime so I wanted to get my thoughts out there. Maybe I'll review it myself someday. Good review, and yes we disagree on certain things, but that's what makes discussion and critique fun and alive.
    ~~~Thanks for reading all my fucking words!
      Thanks for leaving your thoughts. Good to see you mostly enjoyed this. I was really looking forward to seeing how you and Pop Vulture would respond to my critiques. As with you, I feel like there is so much more to be said about this show (the script for this review was cut down from 8 pages to 5). I would like to further detail a few of my claims, so allow me to respond to your wall of text with one of my own.
      ______________
      When I sat down to analyze Episode 24 and 25 again for the review, it was there that I noticed just how brilliant it was for having Ryuuji and Taiga pull out of running away and begin to finish their business with their parents. I didn't mention it in my narration (it's just one out of many, many things I cut out of the script for the sake of time and pacing, same goes for mentioning that the show's beginning narration foreshadows the show's ending), but I did what I could to showcase these events in my footage while speaking fondly of the ending.
      ______________
      When it comes to Taiga, I can't even tell you how much I WANT to like her. I completely understand the thematic intentions behind Ryuuji's feelings for her, even going as far as to change his mind about Minori. I totally get how Taiga's "tsundere" personality is meant to aid in the series' sense of storytelling, and believe me, I completely understand how she would develop feelings for Ryuuji (which she adequately showcased slowly but surely throughout the show).
      _____________
      It all works in concept, but in execution, it does not. At least not for me.
      ______________
      Taiga's personality is a cartoon. She is the one exception to the rule of each character feeling more like people and less like archetypes. Her tsundere gimmick is so over-the-top, it's distracting. Each of her instances of verbally/non-verbally abusing Ryuuji (especially in the second half, and even the end credits scene of the entire show) broke my immersion about as much a a panty-shot would in any other anime. For this reason, I could never sympathize with her, even though she clearly showed signs of maturity as the series went on.
      ______________
      This is also what made it seem rather unbelievable that Ryuuji would develop feelings for her. Not only is she someone who constantly bashes him in an over-the-top, cartoonish fashion, but he never really visibly showcased any romantic interest in her (which is something Taiga herself did very well toward him). So when he made the shift to finally admitting it, I didn't believe him. The scene where he teared up upon seeing her again after the skiing incident was great, and more scenes like that would have been necessary.
      ______________
      One last thing, and I suppose this is more subjective, but Taiga's design just doesn't work. Her childish appearance makes it easier to see her as Ryuuji's little-sister-from-another-mister (I made that up and I'm pretty proud of it XD). I would have been okay with that kind of relationship, too, one where they were like buddies or partners-in-crime, and that's why the first half was so enjoyable to me. That's what they honestly felt like. It worked for me and I was okay with it. But then when you suddenly take a character who looks and acts like that and has established that kind of connection with him, it's just weird and unnatural to see them suddenly start making out. I never felt like there was a good enough sense of sexual attraction to her from his point of view. Maybe it would have worked if they got together earlier so we could get a better chance to warm up to them as a romantic pair, and maybe get more of a feel for what's going through his head.
      ________________
      So yeah, Taiga presents a lot of problems to me. She does a lot of things right, but the stuff she does wrong are what leads to, honestly, my only big problems with the show. Otherwise I think the show would be perfect, and that's why I'm so passionate about the few issues I perceive it to have.
      _________________
      But yeah, still great overall. I had a great time watching the show again (even better the second time) and making this, and honestly it was you and Pop Vulture who inspired me to revisit the show and go this far with my analysis.
    • @piplupfan77
      @piplupfan77 8 років тому +9
      I can see why you feel that way about Taiga, and that's fine but it's just something we'll always disagree on, lmao. And that in itself is fine. It's good even, to have people that like the same thing still have disagreements about it. ~~~You bringing up the panty shot thing reminded me, another reason I love the show is because it doesn't rely on sexy fanservice. Like yeah sometimes Ami will be in a bikini or a sexy outfit or something but there's always a reason behind it and I think any fanservice was reserved for her and only on a few select times. This just makes it feel so much more realistic to me.
      Honestly! I've been thinking hard on the lessons of the story, and I often second guess the author thinking, "this seems out of place", only to think a bit harder and realize she was right all along, whether it was intentional or not (I like to think that it was intentional, but it could've been completely due to impenetrable character design)
    I can relate to Ryuji and Taiga's relationship. My ex was mean, vicious and super independent, but mainly because of her short stature. I'm 6ft and she's under 5ft. I always walked with her, helped her with many life struggles, and she being not affectionate. Only difference is that she ended it because she was depressed in her stage of life and wanted to focus only on herself. It sucked but it's not an anime movie, it's life.
    6:00 Thank you very much for this information, I wondered why most Toradora-related videos were made around 2015, this makes sense.
    Warning, Spoilers:
    11:45 I know this is 4 years too late, but I write it anyway:
    I don't think you got why the fell for each other if this is a complaint/nitpick. In my opinion, ONLY Taiga could end up with him. You don't like her, ok, fine. It's not about that, it's about the fact that her and Riuujy bonded so strongly over an arc about 10 months (Story started in April, becoming a couple in Februray), that no other contender could even come close. In my opinion, there was no way to cut this bond.
    And for why he did fall for her exactly as he did: Learning that Taiga loved him (Episode 21) put his own feelings (which were clearly there) on fire (Taigas feelings went on fire in episode 19).
    This also happens quite commonly in reality when you are already close with someone who one is not explicitly romantically invested in.
    So, even though you might be right that she might not have "deserved" it, the only outcome from a developmental standpoint was the outcome we got.
    I'm more of a Ryuji kind of person. I'm more like a mom than my mom and I've been with someone more or less like Taiga (abandonment issues, very hot-headed, physically/verbally abusive often, clingy...). We've been together for a year and I have to be honest, out of all the girls I've been with, she's someone who I fell in love with most naturally. It felt like we were partners in crime. It was such a great time I've had with her. But things had to end I guess. We figured the paths that we wanted had to be taken without the other. Real life, like their teacher says haha so anyway that's an interesting thought I realized as I watched the show recently. Taiga and Ryuji won't work.
    I could see how Ryuji and Taiga's paring doesn't seem right and for some one like myself leaves me a little cynical but there are a few things that do add up Ryuji may not show it but even by the end he isn't exactly brimming with confidence and there being 3 key events using this lack of confidence and perhaps even adolescent confusion that set him on the path to Taiga the first being Minori's rejection (out of guilt but none the less) 2. Ami's continuous subliminal and liminal manipulation and the third and something I can relate to myself Taiga's confession and almost familial company
    (Long story ahead)
    From my own personal experience this makes sense as that's pretty similar to how my own young love went for the sake of privacy I'll use first initial C for the girl C and I had been rather causal friends we'd sit with our friend group at lunch text over social media as time progress we would be playfully flirty summer rolls around I get rebuffed by the young lady I was infatuated with I graduated some time passes C's one of few people I still hear from we were both kinda lonely people so it was nice to have someone to talk to about whatever around whenever never really thought about her as being a girlfriend option figured I was just a passing fancy figured her friends would speak negative of me (they did) and she'd lose interest until she confessed having feelings not wanting to break her little heart (additional parallel she was short like Taiga) perhaps out of some sense of duty not to make a girl sad I'm sure many other young men have felt I began to rethink where I stood with C having a surge of new emotions I hastely reciprocated interest and agreed to hangout first time seeing each other in person for nearly 2 months I just threw caution to the wind and went in for the kill and of course the kiss was clumsy and off putting but yet tender and sweet dated for 8 months after that until we had some irreconcilable differences
    This analysis was going somewhere until you trashed Tiaga's character. Bro, I dont know what is going on in your head.. (might have a slight idea base on what you said, but I rather not say) but the way you feel about Tiaga's character worries me. (My humble opinion)
    Everyone has flaws, and Tiaga had many of them. Even tho she was acting like a brat, coming from a wealthy family, it was disfunctional one. Her trauma can be relatable for so many people of different societies, and it can be expressed in so many ways. Taiga's happen to be so intriguing and attractive to many viewers because of her straight foward personality. Taiga's character is proving that anyone who is feeling miserable and alone having nobody to understands who they are or what they are going through in life having the sensation of being stock in a deep dark hole desperately trying reach out get out, (In Tiaga's character out of control emotion of low self-esteem with constant anger issues that lead to violant personality), is that it's POSSIBLE to overcome fear/sadness/fustration and that becoming the best version of yourself will soon appear because giving up isn't an option and the willing to grow as a person is the goal. To become MATURE... a dream that many have! She also showed what love truly is when she took care of her best friend's (Minori) feelings towards Ryujji by trying helping him confess love to her because he was to coward to do so, but it gets difficult when he finds himself falling in love uncounciosly with Taiga (complicated much?). In the mean time Taiga started developing feelings towards Ryujji beacuse they were spending much time together as he was taking care of her. He would still feed her even tho she was cruel an ungrateful to him, patiently understanding her internal issues, and being there for her when she most needed it making her feel rescued. And even tho she finally found what she was looking for her entire life, she still was sacrifying everything to see her best friend happy instead. Thinking about her well being more than herself. Do you see that often?
    And the most amazing thing Taiga's character did, in my opinion, was the decision she made to become inoccent and pure when christmas time arrived because she wanted to add a smile and a bright light to the gathering of the holy season. Believing like a child, that Santa Claus was real and that he was watching over her to see if she was behaving well, so he could visit her again, because she earned having her name written in Sata Claus well behaved children list. I compare it as the decision of believing in God, walking in faith and righteousness through the love of Jesuschrist, that makes us worthy to have our names written in the Book of Life to recieve the gift of Eternal Life.. Taiga's character story is to admire, not to judge.
    Spoilers (kinda) ahead...
    So, you don't like Taiga with Ryuuji or don't think that they work together but after 3 rewatches you kinda understand it more and see it more as a nitpick? I'm genuinely curious now to know if you've watched the show more since then and have come to realize that they are actually perfect for each other.
    Taiga is stubborn, somewhat mean, bratty, spoiled, etc etc. but given her backstory and how she has lived for the time being, it does make sense for her character. On top of that, at the end, the whole point is that she's "growing up", not only with her leaving and recognizing that she needs to sort out her family issues but also while she's living in the apartment on her own without the help from Ryuuji. I don't know how you can say that his love for her is out of no where... There's literally 22 episodes (including time skips shown subtly between some arcs) that shows their relationship growing and building over time. Taiga begins to realize that she loves him well before he starts to realize it (not just in episode 19) but they both clearly have feelings for each other sprinkled throughout the series just without them realizing just how much they actually care about each other until it hits them both right in the face. I can kinda understand why maybe some people thought it was too much for him to end up with her based on how she treated him throughout most of the show, but as time progresses and how Taiga clearly has done things for him: letting her dad in her life, saving him from drowning and basically confessing about how much she cares for him in front of everyone, pushing aside her own happiness for his attempts to get with her best friend, the cuteness that is Taiga during the Christmas arc with her expressing some genuine self-awareness through the christmas presents, how she's been considered a member of their family by Ryuuji's mother and how Taiga picks up his mother's work to help their household out... I mean, there's so many layers there and I'm really only scratching the surface.
