  • In this video we look at some of the rocks Benny and I found at our camp site, from common opal to blue chalcedony and everything in between, as well as talking about what makes an agate an agate, and how I clean the few I find.
I hope you enjoy, thanks for checking it out. Happy rock times everyone.
Thank you massively to Mr Symon Sheppard for all of his help imparting his rock and mineral knowledge to each of us! Check out his craftsmanship at his channel

Woh, first again! , getting creepy like I'm stalking. LOL big time.
Yet again another good video some amazing pieces in that collection, I may be wrong but I'm sure I saw several pieces of common Opal in some of the larger pieces.
A big thank you for the mention, I don't ever seek any reward for helping others understand, I'm by no means an authority nor am I anywhere near being an expert in this field, I am passionate about the beauty held within rocks and never tire of looking at them, many times you can see different things when you look at the same rock repeatedly over time.
My only regret about being a rock nut is not having the access to the natural resources like you, that is why I love these videos , even though I am envious and shout at the screen when you are picking up a rock and I thought you were going for a different one.
A big kudos to you and your channel and a huge thank you for making this old man happy.
    Stay safe.

Hey Symon! Oh man I know you help just cause you like to, just wanted to say thank you, it’s very much deserved dude.
Yeah I think there’s a fair bit more common opal in this batch then what I first thought.
Oh and trust me, I wish I could make a video where I picked up each one and shared it but it would go for hours. I’d love it but I’m not sure others would.
      Seriously, thanks for everything mate!

that dark chalcedony with the flash in it looks like it might be a fire agate. fire agates have a thin film of iron oxide that either coats botryoidal features or infiltrates cracks in chalcedony then gets sealed in by more chalcedony. this causes the agate to have flashes of iridescence that start on the yellow end of the spectrum but transitions to other colors like red, orange, green, and blue. also that chunk of chalcedony at the 3 minute mark that you say is not an agate is an agate. its called a moss agate. basically fractured pieces of minerals and mineral oxides get suspended in the chalcedony and creates a fibrous look inside of it. also a good resource if you are looking to learn more information about agate forms types and formation i would highly recommend the book "agates inside out" by Karen A. Brzys. that book has so much information on the different type of agates it is unbelievable. it teaches you not only about agates but teaches you how to differentiate the different forms of agate and other agate look a likes, like jasper, chalcedony, petrified wood, chert, flint, opal, etc... sorry for the word wall! and as a fellow rookie rockhound keep up the good work! love your videos and wish i had access to the agates you have over there.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding

Oh dude thank you massively for the very welcome word wall! So that big bit was an agate! A moss agate! Haha! Oh geeze I always learn best from calling things the wrong thing, I love learning that way. Thank you for the help brother!
And that book! I so can’t wait to read it. Gonna add it to my Christmas wish list ASAP! Wait... is she the “agate lady”?
She’s like a wizard of agate knowledge!

Hey Rookie great rocks! I could watch 'rock' video's all day. I bring my haul back home and sit down just like you're doing and examine each and every treasure I've picked up in detail! I never get bored of it. I then inflict my discoveries on anyone nearby and shove a rock under their nose and point out all the 'amazing' 'beautiful' details. I went for a quick hunt yesterday and picked up three stones with similar characteristics to you opally looking flash one at 1:20 in your video with orange iridescent inclusions. I really do think it could be opal, based on nothing but guessing! From what I can guess I'm hunting about two hours north west of you. I'll try and get my sister to help me make a little video of them so you can see what I mean. We had to give up the hunt because a storm rolled in but I can't wait to get back out there and find some more because I think I've found a little 'outcrop' of the stuff. Keep up with the video's Rookie, I love it!! Thank-you so much!

      Love love Kawaii
Hi, I'm by no means an expert, I just love rocks and the majority of my knowledge has been gained by holding the very rock and working it, pictures in books tend to show the very best specimens and often what we find or buy, ( yes buy, I have to buy all of my rocks there are very few here in England ) has only a slight resemblance to the reference picture, equally the beautiful depth of colour and details seen when turning in the light cannot be appreciated on a screen, much to my disappointment.
It would be really cool for you if you had found an outcrop, be selfish at first and get your fill, that may sound strange but that's what everyone else would do, just human nature I suppose, just like envy and jealousy which are the two feelings I have right now.
I would love to see what you have found and if I can't help then I'm sure there will be someone who can.
A big thank you for considering me though, you have made my day.
Happy hunting and happier discovering what you've found after the cleanup.

@@Rookie_Rockounding It was so disappointing when the storm cut things short but the rain has hopefully exposed some more for next time.! I am so intrigued I can't wait to get back there. Could it be a 'new' type of 'agate/opal' not yet recognised??? The pieces I have are not exactly the same as yours but the orange is vivid and the similarity to the Jasper yours seems to be in is very similar to the rocks found alongside mine. What shall we call it...Queensland Flash Agate?? My hubby is supportive too. He makes the right noises when I ask him to admire every little pebble lol.

And yes. Yes if it does happen to be agate with flash, it shall henceforth be known as QFA, Queensland Flash Agate! Discovered by no other than rookie and Kawaii! 😁

A new video from RR, must mean it's Friday again! Thanks for showing us the finds from the camping trip. From my own experiences I know that trying to film cool "scenes" can definitely be a laughable situation, whenever I try it just cannot take myself seriously and bust up laughing. (Yes, creepy! hahaha) Woot~ Nothing like waking up to some early morning rock porn, am starting to look forward to my Friday mornings! Woohoo~ Love stones like bertha, personally I like to polish up the outside edges of the opening and any angled structures but leave the vug natural with any drusy quartz or botryoidal formations intact. Really beautiful stuff IMO! Not sure if i'm normal or not compared with most rockhounds, I collect em as fast and furious as possible and may check a few out while collecting, but then I don't look at em again until am deciding what to do with it, (cut polish, tumble or just clean and display), they just sit in 19liter/5gallon buckets which is really sad. So much beauty hidden in a bucket, guess I gonna have to cut, polish etc faster! haha
The rains (its 3 celsius this morning) have come up here so it's time for me to put on the wetsuit and get into those mountain creeks and find some freshly exposed carnelian magic! Hopefully get a good day of video to post in the next month or so. Another fine video clip Rookie, showcasing many treasures as usual! You showed a number of rocks we would probably call Agates up here in Michigan. The water levels at around 5:00 and another with what appeared to be fortification banding shortly after, and what appeared to me to be another water level only with a little more color at around 7:13. I love the Carnelians, which we supposedly have up here, although I have never encountered yet, however I am a rookie too, and it may take a while. Anyway the Thanksgiving weekend is coming up here, and I can't take it anymore, gonna have to make a drive to Lake Michigan and do a little hunting even though we have snow on the ground! That's a famous area my friend, I know it's a vast area but it is a very popular hounding area, mostly for specific rocks like the state rock or agate, whatever that area is known for.
I wish you every success in your endeavours but may I suggest that you check what rocks are found in the area and familiarise yourself with how they look , view loads of pictures on Google, choose your area carefully, preferably where the rocks get moved about and added to, finally choose your hunting time well, if you go late afternoon someone else may have beaten you to the target.
Good luck and wrap up warm, happy hounding.

@@symonsheppard5519 thanks for the tips, you're right that I am in a very good area for certain stones. Living in the Kalamazoo area puts me about 30 miles from Lake Michigan where I can find the state stone-Petoskey stone, Lightning stones, Jasper, Unikite, Chalcedony, although not as cool as what Rookie finds, and other cool stuff. My first love is for the Agates though, and that requires a trip to the Upper Peninsula about a 6 hour drive. The wife and I just started exploring up there this year. Next year will be a longer trip to the Lake Superior shore (for Agates), and into the Keweenau copper country for a wide variety of minerals. Ed Truitt
Ed, trust me when I say , if I could travel six hours and be in a prime picking area I would be camping there every weekend .
Those agates are very highly prized and are even bought and sold as a commodity especially the larger ones, when you do go looking please bear this in mind, most people are looking for the tell tale signs of banding or ridges in the surface, there are many ways to hunt, most look for colour and fist size pieces and literally stumble across smaller ones as they go, use your imagination , where would you walk , if you would so would most people, choose harder routes and look at bigger stones, you will soon get the hang of texture, the ones that are not good you won't notice after a while, flipping rocks can also be productive, don't be afraid to get wet or dirty, take a heavy duty holder , stiff brush and strong flashlight, wet any potential trophies and use the light held against the surface, it's surprising what can be hidden.
Good luck both of you and welcome to this addictive hobby.

It’s really been such a great experience. I genuinely want to thank you. From the bottom of my heart mate, (I know it sounds cheesy but), you’ve made me remember why I started this. You really have brother. Thank you, thank you, triple gazillion thank you mate. You’re gonna love this hobby. Welcome to hounding dude!!! Again, thank you 🙏👊

Different time zones, plus I'm retired so I have a lot of free time to learn and grow through your experiences and journeys. Comment when you have time, family and work are important! I look forward to your work, I'm learning a lot. For me rock hunting started about a month ago when I experienced the healing powers of crystals in my house, all the way up to last night where my wife said "wow, your really going to look at those rocks instead of my naked ass walking by" lol, I broke out dying! I'm going rock hunting with my family today at our cabin up north by the beach, small lake, but still fun to grow and learn, plus doing it with my wife and kids is priceless! There is one problem I have always considered when going to cut some pure mineral or quartz crystals, the people who don't know about rocks think they are made of plastic or glass and it's very hard convincing some people they are rocks.

      Paulette Campbell
You are absolutely correct to a point but common Opal (aka potch) can be almost any colour.
Fire Opal is normally a single colour, red or Amber would be my best description.
Precious Opal is the multi coloured type with flashes of brilliance.
There is more than likely a better or easier to understand explanation but I consider this to be a fair representation of Opal types.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 років тому

      Thanks Paulette,
Yeah so I’m finding that there’s a bunch of different common opal types out here, (still trying to identify them haha), but from what I’ve been told, the flash is only ever within the fracture lines with this type of stuff, and without the other side pressed against it to help with the refraction, it would loose it’s flash. I’m pretty sure. There’s still so much for me to learn. But to be honest, fire opal was my first thought too, I just can’t say it definitely is haha! If that makes sense. Thank you for watching and for the comments, I do love me some rock talk. 😁

I'm gonna do my comment-while-I-watch thing for this video.
Benny's Biggy! Wow! If you had access to a big saw I'd cut that one just on one side of the clear seam then grind to it. Of course, it's never that simple.....
Yes, iridescent is the right word, but you can also use opalescent. :) Nice piece bro!
The next one, my first I thought is landscape agate. Look for a scene in the stone, and try to emphasize it before tumbling. Could have potential!
I learned something from you about silica minerals! You're correct, the waterline pieces are onyx! Thanks mate!
Agates for daaaaaays, "boogering" is skin deep, cut that bebe open and see her true colours!
:D Hahaha! Keep doing explanations! When you rewatch them, you'll figure out how you want to organize them, and eventually you'll have your style of breakin it down, down! You did use a lovely piece to demonstrate how chalcedony can have colour but no lines! What a beaut!
I'd call the next guy your "Falcon Head" piece. A couple ways you hold it (5:06) I see a falcon head. Nuther Nicey
6:08 *That* one's gonna tumble up nice!
I'd still posit your Chip of Rhyolite could be stromatolite.
Bertha, Niiiiiiiiiiiice piece man! Lol, point of nomenclature tho, a vug is a void that has opened in county rock and filled with successive sedimentation (halite, selenite, carbonates, etc) or hydrothermal mineralization (quartz, carbonates, fluorite, etc). Since what you have there is otherwise a sedimentary nodule that simply didn't fill the original vesicle, you have a geode!
More awsomeness as always dude! Keep houndin!

Oh man thank you dude for the break down, love it mate! Ah yes haha! The “vug” text 😖😖😖 I meant to remove that in the last edit I did and then noticed it was still on there on UA-cam hahaha! Good pick up brother 👌
That falcon head! Yessss! I didn’t see that before! Oh and landscape agate just makes sense doesn’t it. Thanks dude!
Haha how long winded was that explanation 😂🤣😂
Ah yes, the rhyolite/stromatolite one, so even when filming it I talked about that it could be either of two things but it got even more long winded than the agate description haha! But definitely could be, I just couldn’t explain it properly in the text at the bottom. Totally thought of you though when I filmed it brother!

Actually, agate DOES NOT need bands! The term 'agate' means that the chalcedony is translucent to semi-transparent, then it is called agate instead of jasper or onyx. So that light blue translucent stone at 3:50 is agate.

May I ask why do you use citric acid and baking soda? Nice rocks.. Thanks

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 років тому

Ah yes, so it’s to clean the rocks of any creek scum that’s hard to clean off, or any staining that’s only on the outside of the rock. I use Citric Acid because it’s not dangerous, vinegar works the same too, and then the bi-carb soda and water mixture is used to neutralise any residue of the acids that are still on the rocks. But always clean off the bicarb soda really well because it can leave a white residue.
So yeah, basically to clean them even better than just soapy water does, without being as harsh as muriatic acid.
I hope that helps mate 👍

Umm, maybe I'm wrong. Looking at one of the pieces I've got more closely it could be fire agate...it seems too hard for opal, I tried to scratch it with a piece of chalcedony and couldn't. The other pieces seem softer though and have some white and blue tinged stuff as well. Rookie do you know if agate and opal be found together? Maybe Symon knows?

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 років тому

Ah yes, the age old question of fire agate or fire opal... I wish I could help you there but I’m still trying to figure it out. I do know though that we aren’t meant to have fire agate in Australia, so it’s a hard one to say. Like you said with yours, mine is harder to scratch then normal common opal so it’s really difficult to say what it is. The quest for answer goes on haha! Happy rock times Kawaii!

Thanks again for another great video! I have a question. You said you leave your rocks in citric acid for 3 days, then bi-carb for 3. Do you experience any drying out of your rocks or a white film on them afterwards? I seem to find that happening and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if that's normal

    • @symonsheppard5519
      @symonsheppard5519 5 років тому +1

      Marlaina Atkins
Hi, are you scrubbing the rocks after the bicarbonate soak, if you don't use soap and water and give them a good scrub after the neutralising stage when they dry there will be bicarbonate residue on them, I'm assuming that you have forgotten this part.
My preferred method, soak rocks overnight.
Scrub the next day to remove all mud and debris.
Soak if required in your preferred acid solution.
Transfer from tub to neutralise acid in second tub.
After neutralising is complete, transfer to soapy water and scrub with stiff bristled brush.
Finally rinse with running water, if it's hot water the stones will dry faster.
Use either bright sunlight or a very strong torch and inspect your freshly cleaned rocks for windows, fissures and hidden beauty.

The black rock with the flashes looks a lot like the fire agate we have here in the US. Not very common over here to find it stuck to an opaque silicate like that jasper material you have there, but the iridescence on your stone looks like it's coming from a coating on the layer below the clear material, much the same way it does in fire agate here. Our fire agate rough is usually clear white or cloudy chalcedony around the parts that aren't iridescent. You can see the rough and the polished material here... ua-cam.com/video/245_hcgzxB8/v-deo.html.
