What’s Inside Agates • Waterline, Bands & Moss

  • This week we finally take a look at some of the waterline agate, banded agate, Moss agate and fancy jasper that we found in our last rockhounding trip, and have to deal with a blunt tile saw blade... it all works out in the end and the stones are beautiful on the inside. I hope you all enjoy.
See below for a cool description a friend of mine made for Benny’s jasper, if you’ve been watching the last couple of videos the metaphysical properties are spot on haha!
    Minerals Description and Properties
BENOIT JASPER also know as Benny's Stone.
Benoit Jasper is a rare and unique opaque form of Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of the mineral Quartz. It often contains an abundance of impurities and therefore some regard it as a rock instead of a mineral. Jasper is usually associated with brown, yellow or reddish colours and when it is dull and lacking interesting colours it is not called Jasper but rather Chert. The unique properties of Benoit Jasper cause it to occur in a deep forest green with some swirls of yellow. It is often revered and coveted by collectors for it's beauty and rarity.
    Chemical Formula: SiO2
Colour: Green, Forest Green and Yellow
Crystal System: Hexagonal but as it is in microcrystalline form does not appear in crystals but nodules
    Streak: White
    Hardness: 6.5 - 7
    Transparency: Opaque
    Luster: Vitreous
    Cleavage: None
    Fracture: Concoidal
Sources and Distinguishing Features: Benoit Jasper is a unique and rare stone. It is generally found as a single specimen by collectors when scouring creeks for other minerals. It is so rare so as to be considered a once in a lifetime find. It is distinguished by it's unique colour and its unique property of being isolated from other occurrences of it's type. Legend has it that a collector is not the finder of the stone, rather, the stone 'selects' the collector.
Benoit Jasper is looked at as a curiosity by collectors and geologists alike for it unusual concoidal fracture patterns which to the naked eye and inexperienced, mimic the shape and pattern of an artifact produced by tool manufacture. Given the controversial shape Benoit Jasper can take on any mineral data and description of this Jasper is not truly complete without inclusion of it's perceived metaphysical properties and general warning.
    Metaphysical Properties:
Benoit Jasper is a truly unique stone and is not for the faint of heart. In addition to it's value as a beautiful, desirable mineral-rock specimen it carries with it an aura of wonder. Due to it's unusual presentation of mimicking an artifact it is likely to invoke speculation, curiosity and discussion amongst any who view it. It has been reported to promote rather than alleviate insomnia. It has a tendancy to divide opinion if not handled with care. It is said that the spiritual properties of the stone are so powerful the Jasper itself will remain unnoticed by any but those worthy of treating it with respect and are capable of using it to promote respect and harmony when interacting with others.

If anyone has any tips on how to not blunten the blade Im all ears, I think I might be doing something wrong for it to be getting blunt so quick, or maybe I’m just cutting too much. Any tips at all would be mega appreciated. Have a rad weekend all!

      Rookie Rockhounding
Go to the back of the class.
I told you how you need too dress the blade, and that isn't putting doll clothes on it, the diamonds get knocked out and that leaves more metal than abrasive, you now need too remove the metal, get a cheap and nasty grinding wheel, lay it flat and cut thin slices off, the metal gets ground off but the diamonds remain, this is next weeks assignment and all marks will go towards your final exam.
Moss, plume agate, water marks are caused by----------- anyone? hands up please.
Yes rookie, what do you think the waterlines are caused by?
      Is the answer water?
Correct rookie, minerals left behind after the water has gone home.
Remember that an agate by any other name is still an agate, it's all Quartz.
And on that note, that's exactly where I'm going right now.
      Class dismissed.

Water! The answer is water!!!! Ah dammit, you already said it.
This feels like high school science all over again! Haha!
Frik, okay so if I get a cheap grinding wheel and cut it when the blades getting slow, it’ll help it? Seriously man! You are way better than any high school teacher 😁
      I’m gonna try that.
And I thought it might be from water settling in the void and then evaporating leaving the minerals to do their thing and grow a straight line of Crystal formation. Buttttttt I don’t know if that’s correct haha!

That little guy was just stunning on the inside, some of the waterlines had tiny crystals inside like little horizontal voids. It was too hard to point out in the vid but its structure and formation was really beautiful.

Hey... When your saw starts grinding slower, take a brick or piece of concrete and make a few passes with the saw.
When you cut chalcedony, silicates build up on the blade.
The brick trick will make it cut like a new saw again.
    Edit:
I see that you soaked yourself like I did the first few times.
    Stand behind the saw..

Ah yes, quartz or chalcedony... so Benny and I often find chunks of quartz that almost look like chalcedony and then chalcedony that almost looks like quartz. From what I know, which is still not very much haha, is that chalcedony is quartz. But it’s crystal structure is a lot smaller and more compact than how quartz crystals are. So chalcedony has a cryptocrystalline structure and the quartz that is not in big beautiful crystal spikes is very small crystals that you may not see with the naked eye but are larger than those that make up chalcedony like agates and jasper. It’s a tough one and hopefully someone will be able to help out here. I know there’s some serious rock and mineral gurus on here that may be able to explain it better. Thanks you for the email I’ll send you one so you have mine. Sometimes I take ages to get back to emails cause I get busy but I do eventually reply haha! I’ll see what I can come up with though. 😁

I am afraid to wreck them. Have you started to look at them closer, with a 10x or similar loop? Dont mean to add more confusion to ya but it could also assist you in the direction that you want to cut is my thought. The close ups are insane honestly, all the tube flow on some, breccia on others, even how on one rock alone you have melted section on one part of the rock as it went thru high temps and nothing on the other side.

About $20. US should do the trick, mine is a very bright one like the cops use and it came in a box with charger and spare battery, if memory serves me right it's a " probe shiny " led , can't remember the lumen size but it's high.

Oh my, those stones are gorgeous, yes, even the green one! You've got to google Iris Agate in images, that little one at 9.40 looks like it's trying really hard to be one. (check out the 'rough' images as well cos there's similarities). It makes me wonder if there's more. I don't know anything about cutting stones but it looks like the ones in images are really thin slices so maybe that enhances the effect? I could watch this all day and then some! Maybe you could do an extended version video for those of us who can't get enough? Good Work!

It appears to have an iridescence to it's *sky* part that may be the rare iris type agate, There are lines so close and fine in it (not visible to the naked eye) that there is an almost rainbow or diffraction effect. Please look it up this type and then check the agate in question. You m ay have something amazing there.

Hey Rookie, another great video, that fancy Jasper was quite amazing, I also love those Waterlines too, they're called Water level Agates up here in the Great Lakes region. Anyway up here in Michigan I'm going nuts with rock hunting withdrawal and I think I'm going to make the 30 mile drive to Lake Michigan and see if there is any exposed beach and rocks. If all is still encased in snow and ice, I know I can find a couple of your video clips to get me through! Oh just a thought, could the wearing out of your saw blades be related to the hardness of the stones you're cutting? You do appear to be using an adequate amount of water while cutting. I have a hearing impairment and I didn't hear whether or not you're using diamond cutting blades, though I'm assuming you are. If not, I'd give those a try. Good luck.

I hope it starts warming up for you over there soon and that the snow gives way to the beautiful treasures 💎
Yes I think that the stones are so hard is going to make the blade wear quicker, but there’s definitely been a couple of things I could be doing better and some great suggestions on here also so hopefully they can help with the life of the blade. And yeah the blade I use is a continuous diamond impregnated blade. Some have suggested that it might need to run a brick through it a couple of times to dress it properly every now and then. So fingers crossed it helps 😁

Round pieces are nice to work with, because your wrist &fingers should easily be able to rotate the piece. @@Rookie_Rockounding The bevel disappears in tumbling. The only function it serves is to minimize edge-chipping during tumbling. This is most useful with macrocrystalline quartz, as there tend to be fractures running in all directions (at least around here anyway), but it does keep thinner agates from "fish-hooking" as I call it.
