Rockhounding Day Trip 1 • Thunder Egg Pieces and Chalcedony Chunks

  • Benny and I leave camp for a day trip hunting agates, we find thunder egg pieces and just some pretty Chalcedony gems in one of our old favourite creeks. We end up trying a new location and find some pretty rocks. Just a good day rockhounding out in nature.
    I hope you enjoy, thank you for watching.
    “Thunder Egg description:
    A thunderegg (or thunder egg) is a nodule-like rock, similar to a filled geode, that is formed within rhyolitic volcanic ash layers.[1] Thundereggs are rough spheres, most about the size of a baseball-though they can range from less than an inch to over a meter across. They usually contain centres of chalcedony which may have been fractured followed by deposition of agate, jasper or opal,[1] either uniquely or in combination. Also frequently encountered are quartz and gypsum crystals, as well as various other mineral growths and inclusions. Thundereggs usually look like ordinary rocks on the outside, but slicing them in half and polishing them may reveal intricate patterns and colours. A characteristic feature of thundereggs is that (like other agates) the individual beds they come from can vary in appearance, though they can maintain a certain specific identity within them.
    Thunderegg is not synonymous with either geode or agate. A geode is a simple term for a rock with a hollow in it, often with crystal formation/growth. A thunderegg on the other hand is a specific geological structure. A thunderegg may be referred to as a geode if it has a hollow in it (see illustration of Gehlberg specimen), but not all geodes are thundereggs because there are many different ways for a hollow to form. Similarly, a thunderegg is just one of the forms that agate can assume“ (directly copies from Wikipedia).

Your camera work is fantastic, your angles and clarity, the beutiful lightning, the bird calls and the sound of the water make me feel like im right there with you. Ive been in love with rocks since i was a child, walking the road ditches to find the chalcedony, jasper, pet wood and whatever other beuties cought my eye. Coffee cans full cluttered our garage! My house today is so full of rocks it should be embarrassing..but its not, every one has a story! Please don't ever loose your sense of wonder, you guys are beutiful gentle people in a beutiful land, a breath of fresh air! As long as you make these videos i will be watching, and smiling!

    Great video man. FYI I use calcium, lime and rust remover to take dark stains off. Not sure if the chalcedony will hold up to it by the wuarts I use it on isn't affected. Dilute 2-1 water then product. Leave just until stain is gone. I get the cheapo brand. Then into bicarbonate bath. Good luck!

      Haha! I know exactly what you mean, I find myself not telling even some of my close friends about my rock stuff cause their eyes glaze over. I was talking to a guy I met on the creek today about that actually, he was looking for gold and I was looking for rocks, his friends ask him how much money he will make finding gold and he replied, how much money do you make going fishing? It’s just such a beautiful hobby.
      We are a special bread though, us Hounder’s hahaha!
      I hope you get to find some rock people where you are! If we ever do head up there we’ll definitely give you a hoy!

      :) When you're using a tumbler, it's always good to have a broad range of piece sizes. While out collecting, I'm always on the lookout for "tumbler ballast". Plus, small ones are easier to cut pendants, earrings, etc out of.

      Symon Sheppard
      hey Symon, thanks dude, hopefully gettin better at findin some pretty ones, but yeah I hear ya dude, the little ones aren’t as special, I guess with us the hunt is as much part of the fun as the quality of the find. And the little guys help fill up the tumbler... It’s sorta like fishing, while out in the field, the little ones are like getting a few bites here n there, keeps the heart racin, till you get a big one. Sorta letting us know we’re on the right path. Just wanna capture and share the fun of it. I think I’ll start getting a bit more selective as I get more experienced though, but I get excited even with the little ones still haha! Thanks for watching and for all the input. I really appreciate it brother.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 років тому

      Thirst Fast
      Yeah I think that’s why we like picking them up. It’s fun but also makes really good filler for the tumbler with stuff that you know is gonna be at least close to the same hardness as the other ones you’re tumbling.

    • @symonsheppard5519
      @symonsheppard5519 5 років тому +1

      Thirst Fast there is that to it I suppose but the thing with harder rocks and tumbling, you know they will take time to polish and by the time stage two is over you will wonder where they have gone , either totally disappeared or reduced to tiny pieces.
      It's just my opinion, nothing more.
      They do look nice unpolished in glass vials with a covering of water.

      Haha! Oh yes, the magical disappearing rocks that I have so frequently placed in the barrel to find no trace of after the second round. Hahaha! Truth be told I just like picking them up and haven’t curbed my enthusiasm enough to leave em there. Haha! Thanks for the discussion guys.

    Thanks for the Friday goodies RR, another enticement for me to get out and find some treasure. Oh how I love silicates! It lays out in so many interesting patterns and with mineral inclusion colors is IMO absolutely amazing. It's fun and funny watching others hunt rocks and seeing the emotions and interactions of you and Benny...it appears myself and my hunting cohort are not the only ones who get animated when finding good stuff, TBH, i get way more excited by finding a nice piece jasper, agate/chalcedony than I do finding bits of gold in the pan. And watching Benny wash the rocks was a familiar if not uncomfortable vision that made my back hurt in sympathetic response to his work, now that I'm getting older and slower I just carry a collapsible bucket to wash the banks with (Freegrace Premium Collapsible Bucket on Amazon) the bucket is light, hangs off my belt behind me when I'm not using it and works really well. Dontcha just love those wonderful meandering creeks? But as you mentioned, the gravel bar's are spread out along small stretches that take you through deeper water (I'm thankful for satellite images to help guide me), to get around/through the deep pools I also like to bring an inflatable floating ring (intex river run II) that I can attach to my belt with a rope and is also a helpful place to put my backpack when i am on the shoreline searching hunched over (my summer river/creek hunting gear usually involves a pair of Crocs on my feet, a Canvas backpack that can hold around 32Kg of rock (small wire brush), a drop pouch on my waist in front of me (holds 8-10Kg of rocks) the floating ring and bucket hanging on my belt in back and sometimes a rock hammer depending on where I'm hunting, for winter add either a wetsuit or chest-waders and minus the floating ring) PS....looks like one of Benny's hands has been beat up a bit, hopefully whatever happened is healing or has healed and no longer causes him pain so he can keep up with you when chasing the chalcedony! Thanks again sir, have a super weekend~

    • @Rookie_Rockounding

      Backcountry with Shaughn
      Good day kind sir! Thank you for watching and for your always kind and awesome comments. Your setup sounds amazing! Thanks for the great suggestions! For the deeper part next time we’re going to bring some inflatable inner tubes and paddle our way up. Fingers crossed...
      speaking of fingers, yeah Bennies finger tip got pinched off a few years back by a heavy steel plate at his work coming unstuck onto the bed of the truck with his finger in between. Pretty nasty sounding accident. But he’s all healed up and apart from feeling like it’s still there sometimes, he says he doesn’t really notice it.
      We have such a good time out there, and the banter is just hilarious sometimes. Good people, pretty creeks and plenty of pickers, all ingredients for a great day out 👍😁
      Take care my friend and I’ll catch you soon. 👍👍👍

      It is my pleasure sir, very much enjoy watching your enthusiasm and positive nature and it is obvious how much you enjoy and share my passion for beautiful earth, seeing the camaraderie with you and Benny is really a great part of the videos as well. (good to have close mates!) I'm sure if you guys are like we are the jokes are the best and flow easy even if just a little on the adult side.
      heck Rookie Rockhounding- you're the one doing all the work, it's us who should be doing the thanking for all the video editing and camera shots of your finds! hahaha I'm too impatiently looking for "one more" to stop and video the pieces and afterwards i think to myself, "dang it why didn't I get close ups". DOH!
      Anyway, we're moving into winter here and all the leaves just dropped so hunting rivers and creeks is quite difficult and so have been working on a few slabs for my collection. Some picture Jasper from the Owyhee area of Oregon I collected earlier this year and a cracked slab of Bigg's Junction Jasper I purchased last week that am glueing with Hot Stuff glue to stabilize the cracks before trying to sand and polish. I do something similar when working with Opal but start by baking the water out of the opal first in the oven on a very low temperature for a couple hours, then soak in Hot Stuff glue for a couple minutes so it saturates the opal filling in air pockets and let the glue dry/cure before trying to sand. (opal tends to have a lot of water in it and when heated during grinding/'sanding will cause expansion and fracture the opal) I find a decent amount of thunder eggs with plain opal inside and a few in specific areas of the US with more translucent opal qualities.
      Speaking of working the rock...you should try to crowdfund project to get you a slab saw, a sanding setup and buffer for the bigger pieces to increase the options you have for creating and posting videos. (I'd donate a little to such a project) I've thought of doing it myself but really haven't anything to offer in return like you do. (my videos aren't educational or fun at all and my voice could act as an ASMR video and put you to sleep)

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 років тому

      Backcountry with Shaughn
      Hahahahaha! Oh man that’s funny, an ASMR rock video 🤣 hey you never know, it could have an audience for it 👍
      Thanks for the kind comments though man, I don’t care about likes and stuff, just that I hope some people enjoy the journey of it all.
      I don’t know if I could crowd fund because I would feel bad if the return wasn’t good enough for the viewer, but I am going to get a tile saw very soon, just waiting on the tax return 😁😁😁
      That sounds so fun working the stones, and slabs etc, I honestly can’t wait to eventually get to start doing more of that side of this amazing hobby. I’ll be sharing that whole process too for sure. Probably will be even more comical to watch as that’s really where the “Rookie” in me will come out even more hahaha!
      Seriously really appreciate the support mate! And I love your videos, they showcase your collection beautifully 👌

    Love your videos, where you from? My girlfriend is from the Gold Coast, but we live in Alberta, Canada. We get some agates and fossils in our rivers but not as nice as the stuff you find. Next time I visit your country I am gonna check out a creek or two cause I am obsessed with rockhounding.

    I thought thunder eggs were geods you crack open!? And just a name for the place there found, thunder valley? But all are geods. Hmmm....im still learning. Rock on

      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 років тому

      jason genaw
      Oh man, yeah I think I’m still learning as well. As far as I can tell I found this for a description online.
      “A thunderegg (or thunder egg) is a nodule-like rock, similar to a filled geode, that is formed within rhyolitic volcanic ash layers.[1] Thundereggs are rough spheres, most about the size of a baseball-though they can range from less than an inch to over a meter across.
Similarly, a thunderegg is just one of the forms that agate can assume.”
      So yeah, I think I’ve got much more learning to do, but I’m gettin there. Haha! 👍😁

    From what I understand, a Thunder Egg is different from these agates and chalcedonys in the way the vacancy occurs for the silica-rich fluids to deposit into. The agate and chal you're finding look mostly like filling in vesicles of magma or lava that formed as it depressurized as it ascended. Thunder Eggs tend to have formed in a pocket that had something that contained water that was driven off one way or another, causing shrinkage-cracks. The voids created during the shrinkage are then filled by later seeps.
    Some of those (incl the amethyst) looked like they were filled veins, so that when you were counting the layers, they actually would be numbered 1,2,3,4,4,3,2,1. That's where you see interlocked crystals at the middle and a clear sequence from the edge.
    Looks like ya had fun though! Also glad to hear Benny got a new tumbler!

      This is true I used to call chalcedony nodules of any sort thunder eggs then I realized that certain areas have real ones like Oregon thundereggs are pretty famous in America.

      Oh wow! Okay yeah I get what you’re saying, so as Benny was counting it would meet a middle point and then go backwards to the original layer??? Is that what you’re saying? So frikin interesting!!!!! Thank youuuuuu for the knowledge sharing!!!

      @@Rookie_Rockounding You got it! Where the coarse quartz crystals grew together would be the middle (ie the highest number of layer). This type of deposition lends some degree of predictability when some of the layers are ore. I'll send you a picture from the text-book I'm referencing. Lol, it's from 1888.

      We do what all good hoarders do... fill the shed up and question what the heck we’re gonna do with all these rocks... hahaha!
      We tumble what we can for displaying. Planning on getting a saw, cutting them and shaping them, then either tumble them to polish and maybe one day make some jewellery. But for now, we just love getting out to nature and finding what we can. 😁
