As a teen in the mid-80s raised on '70s hard rock, then new wave, and punk, I wondered where the hell good music went... when this song came out well over a decade later, I was like "oh, there it is." Hard to describe the audio void this filled.
From what I understand, some of the members met in music school, so they are trained musicians. Albert Hammond Jr. (guitarist) is the son of a famous musician who started in the late 60's and Julian (singer) is the son of the owner of Elite modelling agency. They have quite interesting backgrounds.
Whats really gonna throw you for a loop is that this ISNT the version on the album. What you are hearing is what they were playing when they shot the video!
Lovely reaction, you should definetely do a reaction to Swedish rock pop band The Motorhomes and their classic song The Man. If this song with The Strokes got you dancing i guarantee that The Motorhomes song The Man will as well.
That's the early 2000s. They were relatively young, but Julian Casablancas was worldly even then, while being, at the same time, inherently goofy. A couple of other things you should check out, as an indication of his versatility and his thinking, are his song 11th Dimension as well as the two he did with Daft Punk, Instant Crush and Infinity Repeating. His father, to my understanding, was a serial abuser of women and girls and, I suspect, involved in trafficking and other nefarious practices. To his credit, Julian didn't seem to have a very high opinion of him and I believe they were estranged for many years before his father's death. I once saw him in a clip from some lame late night talk show in which he said to the host, "We're in a secret war, my friend." The host (his name isn't worth trying to remember) and the audience then openly mocked him and the disrespectful PoS proceeded to stuff orange slices into Julian's pockets. Obviously, the overlords of that sorry sell-out wouldn't let a bit of the truth squeak through on their paid asset's show whose whole job was to direct the masses' thinking one way only.
Your understanding of Jules father is wrong. He founded Elite Model agency and created what’s known as a “super model”. The agency did come under fire for allegations but it was against Gérald Marie. Not John. Which is Julian’s dad. His father if anything is the reason the song “barely legal” exists. Since he dated young/married young.
