Saw the strokes back in the early 2000's. They pretty much just stood there and played their album 'Is This It' front to back then walked off the stage. It was incredible. The crowd was cheering for an encore. Julian came back on stage to a massive applause. He walked up to the mic and said, "We don't know any more fucking songs", dropped the mic and walked off stage. The crowd went fucking crazy (in the best way). Easily one of the most rock n' roll things I have ever witnessed. Still makes me laugh and still one of my favorite live show memories ever.

I remember resisting The Strokes during the first album's wave of press, as I'd read that at least a couple of their parents were connected to the music business and had given them a ton of breaks (I don't even recall if this was true or not, it was just something I'd read) and I thought the single was a direct lift from "American Girl" - so I wrote them off as "poseurs", for lack of a better term - in other words, privileged kids slumming it to "do the 70's thing", etc. But after I actually HEARD the first album (and the SECOND album, which a lot of people wrote off, but I actually think is their BEST album), I had to give in, because the songs were just so damn good, the writing and arranging was just incredibly smart and the lyrics were truly solid. They're just a great band, period. I liked pretty much everything they did, even "Angles", which I think is underrated. But that second album, "Room On Fire" - to me, that's the classic.

They were all rich kids. And at least one of them (Albert) had a parent in the music industry (His dad was a British singer who had a few hits in the 70s). Julian's dad owns a fairly big modelling agency. They all met at fancy prep schools in New York and Switzerland.
I was in school when the Strokes first appeared. A few of my mates were into them and I thought they were just posers pretending to be rock stars. Their first album was played in heavy rotation in my friend group and the music quickly grew on me.

I had the the same journey. Room on Fire was so fairly untreated, it still stands alone. They weaponised and subverted and if anything reinforced and bettered their debut, it still sounds timeless and fresh. I remember thinking they released the wrong first single. In fact they never hit the stadium heights of kings of Leon but kept their edge, wit and verve. I thought their 2020 album was terrific. There’s such precision to what they do and those melodies!

I stopped listening to the radio in 1996, I’d say. It’s funny because that hipster side of me didn’t want to like The Strokes because they were getting that mass appeal, but man, they won me over and the mass appeal was fleeting. All of this is said in the context of not knowing where you are, but my impression was always that UK radio had better options back then.

One thing I’ve always liked about this song is if you watch the guitars, in the verse the guitars are actually just playing C, F, G but the vocal melody and bass imply there’s a D minor and E minor, but the guitars themselves never actually play them. I always thought that was cool. They do same in the verse of the song Someday too. It sounds like the verse guitars in that song are playing A, Bm, D, A. But the rhythm is only playing A, D, D, A and other instruments and melody imply the Bm. Obviously it works because of the majors and relative minors, but it gives it a cool feel and a bit of tension rather than all the instruments following the root

Greetings Mr Hawkins. Great channel. This comment is a train of thought that leads, eventually, to a question. Until earlier this year I was in a band and Last Night was in our repertoire- it's a great song to play and always got the punters up and at it. I am no longer playing live but your video did get me thinking about how my pub band gigging all started. Many years ago, my parents owned a stereo radiogram, a veritable piece of furniture which housed an LP record player and a radio. I vividly remember spending countless hours in front of the speakers, tennis racket acting as a guitar, rocking out to my favourite choons. But my favourite moments were standing on my own in my mum and dad's dining room, looking out at the faces of a non existent audience, and drinking in the atmosphere from 2 albums - If You Want Blood by Angus & Co and Live Killers by that Queen. If you are genuinely moved by the experience of playing the opening tracks of both of those albums at full volume then it is indeed inevitable that you will spend your life trying to recreate that feeling for yourself - even if the best it gets is 100 drunken revellers in a high street pub. Loved every gig and would do it all again. But it got me wondering, do you have a favourite live album?
Keep on with the channel, its a wonderful thing.

Which is kind of funny because it kinda sounds like a lot of other much older bands at the same time...but I wasnt sick of those bands ;)
I was just starting guitar at the time and always loved the guitar solo on this one. You could sing along with the melody but its also super angular and then he does that little strumming part at the end.

Great breakdown Juzz - they always came across to me with that New York 80s vibe - almost looked like Blondie's backing group 😀
Bloody well executed nonetheless, and Casablancas, is the brainchild of it all.
PS: You guys were fantastic in Melbourne recently 🤘

Man, they were young there. Great stuff. I had forgotten about the Darkness/Strokes rivalry, though I remember hearing something about it at the time. Glad both bands are still kicking. I will also have to steal Eddie's appalling/appealing excuse at some point.

That album always sort of stuck me as a lot of classic rock rewrites into Strokes originals. May a post 2000 reset on classic rock. The song and the album as a whole always struck me fun but nothing overly important.

I was 15 and I remember watching this for the first time popping up on mtv2 while I got dressed for school.
Nobody dressed like them. Except a few post-hardcore kids but they wore them baggier. Everyone in 2000 wore baggie everything.
Their silhouettes were so different. Maybe a week after the video was out everyone in school that was an indie rock kid started to dress like them. We all rushed to dowload their bootlegs and first album on napster. We burned those CDs immediately.
We read every NME article online.
Nirvana and Brit pop felt like out older brothers music. But this was ours. Along with the white stripes (also weirdly system of a down). This was OUR soundtrack and no one elses.

I always thought the same with the Spinal Tap reference of the glove and title. One would assume that was intentional, but if not... life imitating art? Regardless, LOVE The Strokes! Another great video, Justin! CHEERS!!!
