Fishes don't necessarily suffocate when on the surface, as long as their gills are wet they can absorb the oxygen and not suffocate

The closest thing they can probably do is "barking" by moving their gills in a certain way

I love hammerheads so much! Incredible creatures but HIGHLY susceptible to stress and anxiety. I wouldn’t have been able to refrain from telling him I love him but no doubt this took a tremendous toll on him 💔 sweet baby didn’t know any better
I’m glad he was released safely and he swam off quickly. Not what we were going for!! But what an adorable surprise. I hope he gets huge ☺️.

Hammerheads don't often survive after catch and release, especially babies. Please don't do this on purpose in the future

There not much evidence supporting that claim. Almost all fish survive being put back in water without injury. The Hammerhead isn't any different.

For those of you wondering. no this is not a bonnethead this is a baby hammerhead the difference between the two is baby hammerheads have noches inbetween the head and the body while bonnet heads do not have these notches
