As a parent it is OBVIOUS Dr. Mike doesn’t have kids. If he ever becomes a parent he would immediatey have a different opinion than he has now. If I’m with my kid constantly I don’t need to bond with them 24/7. Being on a swing means I can get a couple minutes of some semblance of conversation with friends via phone.
Only thing that mom did wrong is that she couldn’t swing her child AND look at her phone at the same time.

Yeah, but that's kinda the whole point - you can't look at your phone and push your child at the same time.
If it's not a work-mergency, or life-death situation, it wouldn't kill you to put the phone down for five minutes and fully engage with your child. For 5 minutes. Your social life will not collapse within that time.
Also, I refuse to believe that anyone who has a child, or at least a child they acknowledge and care for would say "it" over "them."

I have a hiatal hernia and i wish all i had to do to was switch my laying position during a flare up. It really takes a controlled diet, and medication, or surgery if it’s bad enough to control it. Also, it’s really hard to try and fall asleep at all when it feels like your whole esophagus is burning so laying down at all just tends to make it worse.

From my experience, lying down on my left side does actually help reduce acid reflux and the feeling of needing to throw up. About the lemon essential oil one: citrus essential oils contain limonene which dissolves rubbers and grease pretty well (was used to clean engines and bikes a while back). That’s why it pops the rubber bands. If you want to witness it you can peel an orange close to an inflated balloon it will pop if any of the oil gets in contact with the rubber!
It’s pretty toxic and corrosive in large quantities or if it’s pure enough, like most essential oils though.

    • @kylascraftykhaos
      @kylascraftykhaos 2 роки тому +29

The limonene makes a lot of sense. That's the one they extract from citrus for cleaning products and makes citrus less ideal for compost, right? ...I kinda wanna try that balloon experiment now, but I hate making waste with balloons.
But I've also found that almost any oil I use in the ends of my hair will break those tiny elastics down overnight. Even just olive oil.

I would love to see some kind of collab between Dr. Mike and Ann Reardon of "How to Cook That" (probably virtual, as she lives in Australia), as she does a lot of videos debunking hacks, especially from content farm sites like 5-Minute Crafts. You could even make it more "fun" by having Ann try to figure out what exactly is wrong on the medical hacks, and Dr. Mike try to figure out what's wrong with the baking/cooking hacks. She recently had UA-cam take down her video warning people about the dangers of fractal wood burning, while leaving up the actual fractal wood burning videos she was warning about, so she could use a boost in viewership that could come from such a collab.

The rubber bands one is relatively safe actually. The chemical reaction going on is limonene in the lemon essential oil dissolving the rubber and causing it to fail. Limonene is also in orange and lemon peels naturally. It's the same chemical reaction that happens if you've ever seen one of those "pop a balloon with an orange peel" videos.

Actually, getting the kid to pick the bandaid can be a life hack. If you need your kid to do something, telling "you have to do this" might end up with fighting, but giving them two seemingly different options that eventually lead to the same desired outcome will make the child psychologically think they made the choice and they will feel appreciated and feel happier about it. Even if it's just to pick whether they want a "grownup" bandaid or a Batman bandaid.

    Hey Doctor Mike,
I'm a Lifeguard with the YMCA and we do camps all throughout summer. We are all trained in CPR/AED and First Aid but we have kids that come in and have severe allergies that require an Epipen, but the YMCA does not have the training to administer Epipen's nor the funding to provide them incase of an emergency. Which means if a kid does have an allergic reaction and their airway started to closed up I can only call EMS and administer CPR [CHEST COMPRESSIONS,CHEST COMPRESSIONS,CHEST COMPRESSIONS!] if needed. My question is if you think we should look further into it and maybe find a better solution or if we should leave it the way it is?

Not sure if it works the same with the rubber in hairbands, but there's a chemical in lemon and orange zest called limonene which dissolves latex. You can see this if you squeeze a lemon peel onto a balloon, it'll pop. So that's where I think this came from, but not sure if it works.

So the solution to the first part would be, put phone away keep being attentive and swinging the kid.
But the actual problem is that your kid can physically alert you to their complaint because you're so close by, therefore, you need to get farther away from your child via the rope. The only part they chickened out on was having the mom back on her phone with the longer rope option.

I remember when my mom showed me what soap did to pepper if you don’t put soap on your hand you dip your finger into a bowl of vegetable oil and pepper there will be pepper on your finger but if you put soap on your hand and you dip your finger in the bowl of vegetable oil there will not be any pepper on your finger 😊❤

As someone who has suffered chronic migraines for years now, the thought of pulling on my hair when I have one actually makes me queasy. I've gone so far as to get multiple injections into my scull to alleviate them, but noooooo, I should just be tugging my hair I guess

Migraines, chronic ones especially and headaches are totally different things and need to be treated differently for best results. Some may find that tugging their hair or massages help with tension headaches, but they do nothing for a migraine. I live with migraines, tension headaches and cluster headaches and each one has its own treatment protocols for reliving the pain.

Not tugging but simply grabbing the hair as to lift the skin actually relieves pressure and allows for better air flow releasing any toxins. It’s a type of myfascia release. Just lift it, wait 30 seconds and feel where the fascia is pulling you, you may feel a pull to move you hands a certain way and go with it, your fascia is trying to tell you something.

It's for tension headaches, not migraines. It's one way of releasing tension in the scalp muscles, like massage does.
I get both types of headaches, and ikwym about migraines. The only thing I want touching my head is ice packs.

See the thing is, personally the “pull on your hair to relieve a headache” thing is true for me, it does actually help my head stop hurting as much, *but it’s not health advice, its just a thing that helps some people in the moment, it’s not a solution*

Probably bc you move your scalp by tugging on your hair. Possibly relieving tension on your neck and face.

    • @laner.845

I do this, too, as part of an overall head tension relaxation attempt. I massage the neck and shoulders, tense and untense the scalp, pull gently on the hair to redirect the pain to the scalp and release and feel that tension flow away which can have a sort of placebo feel to helping the headache be less painful. It's by no means a cure, but it can help some people on occasion.

It's cos your brain can't focus on 2 sensations at once so if you create a pain your brain will focus on that or so I've heard anyway, doesn't make it true.
