    Very pissed off watching this video. Not at the host, or his method. I am pissed that this never came up on Google searches for dealing with mite infestations. I almost lost two snakes to mites. In one case, they were so thick on the snake, it looked like small tumors from far away. I never knew this was an option, so thank you, sir, for putting this video out there. This should be passed to all friends that keep any ectothermic exotics. Such a common issue, and such a great treatment. Better than weekly slathering a poor carpet python in mineral oil, and constant cage bleaching. You got my like and subscribe for sure.

    Incredible transformation. I would have never thought predatory mites were THAT effective. I've had a slight grain mite outbreak that came from a container of superworms. I dealt with it differently, I washed the inside of my invert cabinet with hot water and a bit of soap. Tossing away the container and keeping things as dry and clean as possible pretty much eliminated the infestation. But should I end up with an infected wild-caught animal, now I'll know that predatory mites are a great solution. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

    I had a terrible mite problem in a room about the size of a bedroom that I was using for growing plants, so a much larger area. First I used lady bugs, and they worked well but most died off after a few weeks. Some lady bugs kept going, and the mite population went WAY down but didn't disappear 100%. Then I tried predatory mites, and a very similar thing happened. What was going on was in a larger space, the bad mites and the predatory mites enter in to a regular predator-prey relationship for food sustainability. So very roughly 10 bad mites live to feed one predator mite, so it becomes a control mechanism instead of an eradication technique. But, like I said, a much larger space. I really like your videos Dave!

    i love centipedes! they are incredible predators, capable survivors, and loving mothers. another fascinating and informative video. this is subject matter that i wasnt familiar with. do the mites actually feed off the host centipede is that how it kills it? using predatory mites to counteract the mites is literally nature at its finest! it was lovely to see how much healthier and active she was even on the second take! happy to see her getting better and i wish her and you all the best.

    • @leannepaxton5012

      The mites feed off of the centipedes blood, which is why the centipede was lethargic when it was infested with them.
      The little white predatory mites only feed off of the parasitic mites, so once they are all gone, the predatory mites die off.

    • @mtbd215
      @mtbd215 3 роки тому

      @@leannepaxton5012 ah i see. tyvm for your response i was genuinely curious. mites are so strange for example, the mites on a centipede kill it. whereas the mites on a hissing cockroach help clean them which in turn extend the creatures life. i think it would be more beneficial for the mites if they could live in symbiosis with their host rather than to be parasitic.

  • @brianvandriel495
    @brianvandriel495 3 роки тому +3

    Hello Dave, have you seen the mites in action? I work for a company that breeds alot of natural predators to combat plant infestations. It's quite interesting to see them moving around. I know the plant based predatory mites hunt by the smell of plant leaves, as plant leaves emit chemicals when they get damaged, as to warn other plants (and call for help). So I'm wondering how that would work with animal based predatory mites.
    I don't know about this mite specifically but half a bottle seems a bit excessive unless the concentration in the bottle is lower than Im used to with the plant predatory mites I work with. I don't think it would have harmed the centipede either if you gave it a nice shower with the stuff. Would've helped kickstart the process as the predatory mites could've latched on the centipede.
    We use chilled rooms in the packaging department to slow down the progress of eggs, and with finished pallets we (can) put them into warm rooms to hatch the eggs to deliver live insects instantaneously (but most mites are packaged live to begin with here). Idk if it would work for you but it might be worth testing out to extend the life of your bottle, or to go in a bit more agressively.
    Started watching with your spider videos, they are a joy to watch!

      Btw what's wrong with cats? Why you comparing cats to predator mites?... I get that you're comparing them based on what they do to eradicate a certain infestation problem, but you make it seem like cats are bad as mites.. I say this because you used cats synonymously.. I mean yeah the predator mites did do a useful job here and if you used cats in that sense only then I understand, but if not then it's like you're saying, "cats are bad as mites but hey they get the job" ...well the thing is they're still mites and infestation could be a problem.. whereas cats are just cats and you can scare them off Unlike mites that you can't even see lol

    I like how their legs move when they walk, millipedes even more so. but it sounds like those mites you brought in would be worth keeping in a habitat just for when you get mite infestations. just leave the patient in with them until they're cleaned off. guess it doesn't happen often enough.

I wish i kneww more about this but i guess my question is do u think i should keep the feeders in a separate room and either way do u think that the mites could somehow harm my spiders ? I was always under the assumption that as long as ur spiders are healthy the mites should not be an issue! However i havent (thank god knock on wood) had to worry about them with my spoods as of yet andnim praying i dont ever have to! I have seen a huge improvement since i stopped keeping dry food in with any of my feeders. That i breed and when i do like if i put any animal feed for them to munch on i put it in some type of container so it doesn't get wet and or mix with the substrate at all which i have since switched to using a mix of potting soil and play sand
