I bought a Lasiodora parahybana but it was much much smaller than I thought. My psalmopoeus irminia already had some size when I got it and it was no problem to feed mealworms right at the beginning. So now I cut the mealworms in half and feed it that way, since getting a whole fruit fly colony for one sling seems a little overkill :x
They are so skittish at that age lol That would have been cool if you set up the camera on a tripod pointed at them during feeding time and then you walked away and then they all come out and it turns into a feeding frenzy!
I learnt a lot from this video I was surprised by the mealworms as I was under the impression they should get removed if not eaten so they don't injure the tarantula during a moult but I guess those would probably get eaten before that was to happen?

After a bit of trial and error, I came up with my favorite way of getting the fruit flies out. Just nudge the sponge to one side and let the desired amount climb out, then cup them in a sling vial. When they climb up the sides I put the lid on. Then grab the vial with the spider in it, line them up and gently tap the fruit flies in. It really cuts down on the number of escapees. I used to get them everywhere before I started doing that haha. I've got quite the number of fruit fly eating slings.
Wonderful video and information as always! I don't use fruit flies myself. I just let my slings scavenge off of prekilled roaches that have been eviscerated (I'm like the mama balfouri who catches a large dubia to feed her babies😂). I tried fruit flies 1x and my wee one (Neischnocolus sp. Panama) ran from them🤣 then I gave him a rump of roach and he took it. Then later that night 50 escaped fruit flies tried to end my life. Hi Dave I really have learned so much about tarantula's. I went to a science center, and they had a friendly tarantula. I asked if I could hold it, and they said yes. I always wanted to hold one. It was a pink knee. I am not afraid of spiders, and was excited to hold her. I love in Florida USA. I always wondered how you fed them. Excellent video.🕷️🕸️Cindy
Can be a pain to find those fruit flies. For those in the UK go into "Just for pets" (NOT Pets for homes). If you ask they can order them in for you usually on there next delivery the following week. Postage is free as its to the store and they just charge you the price they normally would off shelve (about £3 or 2 for £5). :) Poundland do the wood shaving craft bits in craft section and tubs as well as everything else needed to breed your own.
Hi dave! Another great video. Just wondered where you get them pots with the sponge in the lid? I have not seen them for sale. Or do you make them yourself?
Wow. That's a lot of mouths to feed! Keeping one spider is wasteful on food though. I could only find a large pot of flies when my P. regius was due to arrive. He ate 12, I had to throw the rest!. Nice video again Team Beastie.
I always put the pot of fruitflies in the fridge for 5 minutes before i poured them in. Personally i always keep small ventilation holes in sling enclosures. I rather moist more often than risking stuffy moist enviroments
Yes that is a good tip on chilling the fruit flies before use. Kinda puts them to sleep but they are still alive. I seen that tip on youtube someplace.
@@edgufler1122 Yes exactly. It puts them down to a dorment stage when adding them into the sling enclosure. After a minute or 2 they comes up to temperature and starts moving again. The pro wuth this method is that you font have flies all over the place
@@klaskristian1 Yes when I got my very first fruit fly culture and they started breaking free from their pupae stage. I had zillions of them climbing to the top of the culture container.. I said to myself .. how am I going to remove to remove the top without hundreds of them escaping and crawling all over my desk. Ed laughs
Quick question Dave do u leave the mealworms in with the sling or take them out after 24hrs ? If they burrow in the substrate will they hurt the sling ?
I keep hearing people about "flightless fruitflies" but the only thing close that I can find in my country are curly-wing flies. What are the scientific names for the flightless fruitflies? I have a little T. Seladonia sling that I wanna feed with fruitflies since she doesn't want to eat so often. I don't know if you will see this Dave, but I'm so grateful for your content. You and other content creators have thought me so much about Tarantulas. You've especially learned me a lot about the Seladonia. I loved watching your Seladonia videos so much that I decided to get my own 😁 She's two weeks old now and absolutely adorable and gorgeous. And very adventurous 😂
@@daveslittlebeasties Yeah, the only thing they have Curly-Wing flies (Musca domestica). I did get her to eat very tiny buffalo worms (or pieces of one) though. I will try to catch them indeed, see how that will go. Though having them being able fly might become and issue but i will see how it goes.
Hey Dave! I think the mystery slings at the beginning of the video are Macrothele Gigas ( Japanese Funnelweb ). The way you described them fits them only too well. So, i`ve not been feeling my best the past few days Dave and your videos along with other UA-camrs have been one of the few things i look forward to, since i can`t really do anything since i`m sick. Thanks Dave! I think it`s finally starting to go away though. See you tomorrow Dave! At the time of writing this, it`s Wednesday. Take care Dave!
Awesome video as always. Thank you for all of the great information. You probably already know this, but just in case you don't, there is a stone lost from the ring on your right hand.
When I feed my slings fruit flies I use a Frida snot sucker its in the baby aisle at any store its much like an entomologist aspirator. I suck the flies up and tap them in the sling vials. Fruit fly culture media recipes are easy to find online.
Hi Dave, I love your videos as they make me want to raise spiders myself. One thing I've noticed that changed compared to your older videos, the sound volume is peaking very often. Is there anything you could do to improve the audio? I really enjoy your voice and your presentations, so that change would make all the difference in the world. Thank you for all the information and keep on making these amazing videos!
When stayed with mom in the wild, what do they eat there. ? Do they eat leftovers from mom, or are there little nats or other little critters in mom's nest. I thought the nests look very clean, and there would be nothing to eat.
Great vid as always and a quick 30 minutes.. I have one those flightless fruit fly tubs with the sponge at the top. Can that be used for slings? or would they escape by chomping through the foam? I had been thinking of getting a caribena versicolor and thought it could do as a wee arboreal setup.
Sometimes I wonder how loud noises, like the opening of containers, affects the various types of spiders. Do some get skittish? Or do they get pissed off at the disturbance? Pure scientific curiosity on my part and in no way critical of how you handle the "kids". No arachnids have ever had a better home life that at your establishment.
I love Dave's Little Beasties ♥️

Postage is free as its to the store and they just charge you the price they normally would off shelve (about £3 or 2 for £5). :) Poundland do the wood shaving craft bits in craft section and tubs as well as everything else needed to breed your own.
Hi dave! Another great video. Just wondered where you get them pots with the sponge in the lid? I have not seen them for sale. Or do you make them yourself?
They are old fruit fly pots , I think the spider shop may sell them 👍
👍
Ed laughs
I WANT ONE OF THE BEAUTIFUL BLUE ONES, THE TRAP DOOR ONE, SO LOVELY
I dont know if its readily available over there but insecta slip/fluon works great for keeping fruit flies from climbing
Quick question Dave do u leave the mealworms in with the sling or take them out after 24hrs ? If they burrow in the substrate will they hurt the sling ?
Small mealworms are generally ok as long as the slings are not really small 👍
Have you tried your local live food supplies or maybe even just leave some fruit out and you will have a culture in no time 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties Yeah, the only thing they have Curly-Wing flies (Musca domestica). I did get her to eat very tiny buffalo worms (or pieces of one) though.
I will try to catch them indeed, see how that will go. Though having them being able fly might become and issue but i will see how it goes.
@@DarkdragonKev You could put the flies in the fridge, which makes them slow. Or in the freezer to kill them.
❤️❤️❤️Hope you feel better soon ❤️❤️
@@daveslittlebeasties Thanks Dave! I feel much better now, i think i`m almost back to normal.
Do you have them arranged by type, name, geographic (environment needed), age, or other?
No all random 😂👍
Nice vid 👍
I think it’s when the mic gets closer to me and then moved away?
So cute 😍
When stayed with mom in the wild, what do they eat there. ? Do they eat leftovers from mom, or are there little nats or other little critters in mom's nest. I thought the nests look very clean, and there would be nothing to eat.
They don't eat anything until they disperse and then they hunt anything they can hold onto .
Great vid as always and a quick 30 minutes.. I have one those flightless fruit fly tubs with the sponge at the top. Can that be used for slings? or would they escape by chomping through the foam? I had been thinking of getting a caribena versicolor and thought it could do as a wee arboreal setup.
Some will chew the sponge yes 👍
They look like tiny funnelwebs with those long spinnerets.
I thought so as well
Sometimes I wonder how loud noises, like the opening of containers, affects the various types of spiders. Do some get skittish? Or do they get pissed off at the disturbance? Pure scientific curiosity on my part and in no way critical of how you handle the "kids". No arachnids have ever had a better home life that at your establishment.
Yes it does effect them which is why we try and open them slowly so you dont get them cracking sound 👍
I make my own....crush ripe banana...1cap full of vinegar....one pinch of yeast and add instant potatoes so it's not to wet... consistency of pudding
Nice
