  • Phorid Fly attack on our Singapore Blue and treatment
We found one of our favourite tarantulas looking rather sick and on closer inspection found her to be under attack from Phorid Flies which had laid their eggs around the mouth parts of our spider so we need to intervene before its too late.

I believe she realized you were helping her. There has been so much more research done by wonderfully curious & adventurous scientists who work together with keepers like yourself & have found amazing results that tell us that tarantulas aren't completely big, hairy, clueless spiders who run off instincts. They have the ability to learn in different ways & can even recognize the harmless giant shadow who brings them food by the way you move, sound, and smell. Comfortable habits are a major factor in their behavior as well. You're doing amazing things & leading future generations of keepers in the right direction. Thank you for sharing xx

I didn't realize spiders could be parasitised. When you were removing the maggots, she behaved as though she was feeling relief. I certainly hope you've been able to eliminate her problem and she mends quickly. Being eaten alive doesn't strike me as a very nice way to go.

Poor baby girl. That looks really horrible. Times like this i wish there was a way we could communicate with our animal friends & tell them "this might be unpleasant & uncomfortable, but I'm going to help you" ❤

      Exactly.
Even though, it's "just" a spider, it IS an animal, that we, as keepers care for. AND have the best intentions for.☝️😮
And we CAN observe, when they don't feel well.
So glad to read all the positive comments instead of the negative/ignorant ones.

That reminds me of the time my dog got a huge glass sliver in her pad. She yelped and limped over to me on 3 legs. I looked and saw it, but I couldnt get it out with my fingers, it was too deep and hard to grasp, and it was hurting her badly to touch it. It was on the sidewalk right in front of my place so I took her inside and told her to lay down. I went and got a pair of rubber tipped jewelry pliers. I explained to her this was going to hurt but I had to do it to help her.
Even though she couldnt understand my words, she seemed to understand the intent and trust me to take care of her - she let me hold her paw and examine the glass.
I grabbed the bit that was sticking out with the pliers and carefully pulled out the spike of glass, was about an inch long.
She yelped and reflexively bit at the pliers (not me or my hand) as the shard came out but didnt move her foot. After it was done she licked my hand a bunch. I checked to make sure there wasnt anything left in there, washed and bandaged it and she was fine.
It still amazes me that she seemed to understand what I was doing and trusted me to take care of her, even though it caused her a lot of pain.

Two years ago I couldn’t walk past a 1inch jumping spider in the yard without feeling nauseated and frightened. Now, with your help I have experienced a collection of 15 tarantulas, millipedes, a dubia colony and the creative joy of enclosure decorating and care! I have been fortunate and have had no losses despite moving 300 miles in a blizzard with all 15 T’s in my SUV! Haha! Life is good!!! 😁🤣🌻

I’m not completely sure that was actually shock. It seemed a lot like when a temperamental cat is appreciating some seriously needed grooming… right up until the point when they bolt. Her bolt had that “Wait a minute… How could I forget- I hate this!” sense to it. You see that across a variety of phyla in terms of human contact.
I know Ts aren’t cats, but I know shock doesn’t work the same in them as we know it does in mammals or even vertebrates. Tolerance of life-saving help is way more of a universal trait across kingdoms… in particular, it has been quite an advantageous adaptation… but idk. I’m just glad you were able to help her 💙

I thought I had the utmost respect for you as a Tarantula keeper, but this video blew me away! The practicality and skill that you shared in the handling and treatment of a Tarantula inflicted in this way is amazing. Was wondering that if you had a New World would you recommend using gloves, since they have hairs that can cause issues. Once again, I thank you for your videos. They not only educate but show "how to" treat" issues that may come up. I'm here in the states, but if I were ever to visit the UK, I would have to absolutely meet you and camera lady! You were very gentle with her to remove the fly maggots. I think that tarantulas are very intelligent, and that she knew that you were helping her. @@daveslittlebeasties Sorry; I wrote that when I was tired and it came out sounding weird. I should have worded it as "humidity is bad for treating parasites. However, it can be very helpful for molting or constipation issues." That said, I have no idea what @toliscy's actual issues were. If the spider is generically sick and the specific issue not identified, humidity is just adding an unknown factor on top of unknown factors...but if they're already in a death curl then I guess it couldn't hurt to try. I've had jumping spiders come back to life that way; no idea why they curled since they had plenty to eat and hydration available, but after a day in the spider humidity ICU, they came back good as new and lived a few more months. I can only speculate that they may have had some sort of spider illness that dehydrated them more than the ambient humidity, food, and drinking water could keep up with. In these couple cases I don't think it was constipation because there was no evidence of feces in the ICU after they "came back to life."

Holy crap, that spider really loves you! Im serious! Beyond her initial skittering around. Shes not just not threat posturing shes actually opening her legs and letting work on her under thorax!! That us absolutely amazing. She hasnt once extended her (huge scary) fangs or even really fought you. We know shes not sick docile because how she hauled ass aroynd the table and when you let her go she sat still till you stopped brushing her and honestly her zipping over under that ledge was just the fact most Ts hate being in the open. She certainly didnt give you any trouble when you put her in her enclosure. I honestly think if she'd known wherwe it was she'd have just gone straight in. 🤯you are amazing how well your animal husbandry skills are ...forgive me i cant quite articulate how well honed your skills are. I swear it really was like she knew you and trusted you weren't going to hurt her. I really think her bit skittishness was from how awful she felt and how frightened she was. I .ean when you put her in her tub...well I'm sum it up like the 8 yr old girl watching this with me.
"Ok thanks i love you im gonna take a nap " ot even looked like she waved! Lol i know im Anthropomorphizing a bit, but her behavior is...not what youd expect. Final thought, Ts can live a very very long time.

I know it's a different animal but when I kept Rabbits they were prone to what is called fly strike which is the same thing that your spider had. The dry bits you referred to are the actual fly eggs that hatch into the maggots. If you can remove those it will save you a good amount of time in cleaning the maggots off as the less that's on her to hatch the better. Just thought I'd share my knowledge 🙂 x

I really hope you can help her, she is a lovely specimen but personally I probably would have euthanized at this point. All the "dry bits" on her legs are eggs that will hatch and go to her mouthparts and eat her alive. Man, these flies are little demons. This was absolutely a top shelf video! I was fascinated/spellbound with the fact that you can actually treat a taranhula. And she actually stayed still as you tended her. I'm guessing on some level she knew you were helping her. I hope she recovers fully and has many more years to come.

Hello Dave and Camera Lady. Good to see you as always. I have my fingers crossed 🤞🏻 for this girl. She is one of my favorites. Poor baby girl. So now we have a veterinary video to add to your library. I wonder if there is some kind by of powder or dust that would help with the drying out of this situation. Seems to me that those nasty flies like all that wetness. 🤢Yuck! I have done more than my share of medical procedures with animals but never spiders. I do so hope she is okay. I will anxiously await an update. For now, I am off to bed. Very interesting video tonight. Thank you for sharing. Y’all have a good week and take care of each other. See you soon.💛🧡❤️

I'm pretty sure any compound that would dehydrate the flies & maggots would also dehydrate & kill the spider 😔

Hi Dave , your admiration and caring about Tarantulas is impeccable. Like you say a lot of people and even experts would suggest you euthanize this Tarantula, but you want to give it a chance and help it. That goes to show how much you really care. As long as these animals are in our care.. yes we do have to lend a helping hand.

I deal with fly strike on sheep in summer months . Doesn’t matter how fast you catch it, you always notice the smell. Well done! Flys and maggots a evil.

That's the smell of putrescine! The enzyme the maggots release in their fluids to break down proteins and fats!

Technically putrescine isn't an enzyme. If that's what you're smelling it's likely a byproduct of the breakdown of proteins, not the cause.
