Can we just appreciate how awesome it is in Twilight Princess that there's a dungeon in the temple of time??? Like the same temple as ocarina of time, but now there's a giant tower inside of it???

07:07 This sentiment is incredibly sensitive and powerful. There's something extremely fascinating about really mysterious stuff that's been there all along, not in some distant place or in the unknown frontier, but in places you thought you knew forever. Love that. And I absolutely feel the same way about the Forest Temple and always have since the game first came out. Similar to this, the Temple of Time from Twilight Princess is a strong candidate for this list. Very intelligent dungeon layout, an intriguing puzzle concept and great atmosphere, and it's an incredibly mystical place, heavy with meaning and ancient history, and it's basically right around the corner where Link grew up in that game.

    5. Ganon's Tower (OoT). It's my favorite final dungeon in the series (though Hyrule Castle from TP is a very close second).
    4. Arbiter's Grounds (TP). Good atmosphere, cool item, a fantastic boss, and an iconic location used in future events in the game. What's not to love?
    3. Woodfall Temple (MM). The Stone Tower gets a lot of well-deserved love, but there a few parts that always annoy me (ie. That one timed mirror shield puzzle). The Woodfall area may not have as much atmosphere as Ikana, but I really enjoy the temple itself. It also doesn't feel like a tutorial, which is a great departure from some other first dungeons in the series.
2.Thieves' Hideout (LttP). What can I say? I really liked the fakeout with the girl, and I liked fighting a boss that some NPCs talked about in Kakariko. It may not be one of the best dungeons in the series, but it is a personal favorite.
    1. The Spirit Temple (OoT). I tried to keep it one per game, but I couldn't help myself here. A sage doubling as the miniboss, the hover boots, the mirror shield, the iron knuckles, and the twin boss fights were all fantastic. It feels climatic because of the struggle to reach the dungeon and because of the area's connection with Ganondorf. I also really like that Kaepora acknowledged Link's growth at the end of the child half. It just feels right he calls young Link a man, showing that it's his adventure and not the time skip that led to him maturing.

    5. Water temple, ocarina of time
    4. Eldin mines, twilight princess.
    3. City in the Sky, twilight princess
    2. Temple of Time, twilight princess
    1. Hyrule castle, twilight princess.
Oot has a ton of dungeons I loved, but none of them were much of a challenge like the water temple.
Eldin mines, because it was so varied, and even though it was a fire dungeon, it had a ton of water in it too.
City in the Sky was so cool, and the fact that you got a second hook shot type item for the first time was amazing. Plus, it was really cool to become a medieval Spider-Man clad in green.
The first time I stepped into the temple of time in OoT, I was kinda disappointed. I was hoping for a dungeon, but no success. Then Twilight Princess came out, and you had to complete it for one of the mirror pieces. It was so cool using the dominion rod, and I kinda wish it had more uses outside that temple.
Hyrule castle was amazing, all the darknut fights were awesome. Sword to sword combat was always my favorite in Wind Waker (it certainly wasn’t the graphics) and Twilight Princess, and with the skills you obtained from the Hero or whatever, it made it even more fun.

  • @DunkeyKonga

Forest temple is also my favourite, for the same reasons. The aesthetic design and the beautifully sinister music - it is somehow foreboding and awe inspiring at the same time, almost as if it paralyses you with its beauty. It represents that things are not what they seem. It is not only that it is hidden in the sacred forest meadow as a surprise that makes it so great. Like you said we associate the Kokiri forest with the safety of childhood but what a perfect introduction to the first adult dungeon. The monsters and puzzles are a step up from the child dungeons and I don't think the first dungeon could have been done in a better way.
What I love about Ocarina of time is that the narrative affects the game-play, becoming an adult allows you to wield the hookshot (this is not explained well but I like that adult link has specific items). You feel like the game-play is not arbitrary. Though the dungeon is not spectacular in its design, there are some touches I really love - the wallmasters, the twisting hallways, the Poe puzzles and Phantom Ganondorf (a terrific boss fight). Everything is about illusion and I think that's what becoming an adult is about. Seeing the naive ways of understanding the world as a child collapse in front of you, giving way to overwhelming complexity, and suffering, and still in the face of that you must carry on.

also i cant hel but notice zeltiks picks seem to have little to no choice inside the dungeons themselves? forest temple, ok you can choose which key you have to use first but not really choose, both windwaker dungeons you dont really have to choose, palace of winds doesnt have that much choice in it, heck when you get the cape your path is chosen for you. as for ancient cistern i havent played Skyward in a while and while i remember somethings about the dungeon i forget specifics. and if you want more detail just watch boss keys, the guy who makes it goes over this sort of thing.

Wind Waker was sooo awesome, and it came out when I was 18. I thought the cell shading would make it kiddish and crappy, but I had to try it, it was a new Zelda game after all. I ended up loving everything about it, and the bright skies with the bright blue ocean just made it feel serene. I wish they’d release a version for the Switch. I lost my GameCube and my Wii during one of the ten times I moved in college and a few years after.

    5. Great Bay Temple (Majora's Mask): I KNOW, right? But once you figure out the mechanic, I find that this place is actually super fun, and I really don't mind the final boss. Plus I like swimming as Zora Link.
    4. City in the Sky (Twilight Princess): The music is hypnotic, you're in a constant state of "Oh my God I'm going to fall out of the damn sky!", and the Occaa are chicken people, so what more do you want out of life?
    3. Earth Temple (Skyward Sword): Again, music, but I love the atmosphere here, plus the boss is really cool and fast-paced.
    2. Fire Temple (Ocarina of Time): It was either this or the Spirit Temple, but this one is harder so it's more rewarding in the end.
    1. Ancient Cistern (Skyward Sword): Go and look up the Buddhist parable of the Spider's Thread and you'll understand this Temple's backstory, plus it's just GORGEOUS. It's hard to find an extended mix of the music online though, which is a real shame because, again, the mythological atmosphere leaves nothing to be desired.

I think that my top 5 are, in no particular order
Mermaid's Cave - Oracle of Ages (my first Zelda game, when I finally found the one dungeon that had to be played both in past and present)
Forest Temple - basically for the same reasons as the ones presented here, other than the fact that I got incredibly stumped on my blind playthrough. Also the twisted corridor and the boss... Holy smoly
Stone Tower Temple - I have a soft spot for temples with bending structures. Also I love the fact that the atmosphere of Ikana isn't represented at all during this temple.
Arbiter Grounds - To me, the point where TP actually kicks off. You can see a pattern here, I like bending structures and hunting poes, what can I say?
Sandship - Yeah call me crazy, but I also love going back in time, and having the Sandship breezing in the middle of the desert while being actually on the ocean is just *chef's kiss*

    2. Ancient Cistern
    1. Shadow Temple (introduction to spooky and in my opinion, no other temple made me feel like how the Shadow Temple makes me feel. Okay, Dark Woods from Link Between Worlds did it and that one is an honorable mention. But for nostalgic reasons and how it ties into the dark side of Hyrule, it has to be on my list.)

It's been said, but I'll say it again. Arbiter's Grounds. The freaky atmosphere, the terrific gameplay, the use of Wolf and Human forms, the design that is difficult to fully search but without requiring much backtracking, the freakin' Spinner, and easily the best bosses (both mini-boss and head honcho, plus how they're linked by that cursed sword). Oh, right, and the large amount of plot that goes along with the whole place! How is this not at the top of any list?

For me: Puzzle Box / Puzzle Aspects > Bosses > Atmosphere, and it all has to be memorable. A series of rooms with puzzles that never see you affecting other rooms or even doing a hint of backtracking is a loss - sorry Shadow Temple and all of Wind Waker (except Makar's Temple). With that in mind, and knowing that the entire list aside from Sky Keep could be swapped around for placements:
    1. Sky Keep (SS) - the whole dungeon is a puzzle, and that's mind blowingly incredible. Even without a proper single boss, this takes the cake.
    2. Sandship (SS) - Timeshift stones are a great puzzle mechanic and tie into enemies as well. The final boss is a letdown but not so much that it ruins the dungeon.
    3. Ancient Cistern (SS) - Lots of clever design, a great atmosphere, and one of the best bosses ever makes this an easy win. Loses points for that one stone tablet that could have been a Fi hint.
    4. Stone Tower Temple (MM) - Flipping the dungeon is amazing and having to use basically everything in your arsenal is always great. Growing to Kaiju size to fight the final boss is also really sweet, although the 3DS remake missed the execution by making it hard to fight Twinmold with your fists. And although that bit sucks, the original N64 version was also way too easy as you could just go into Giant form and basically mash the controller on your face to win. Mini-bosses are great though.
    5. Water Temple (OoT) - Loses points for the original involving taking Iron Boots on and off a bajillion times. Gains those points and then some for atmosphere, the puzzle aspect, and Dark Link fight.

    Here's MY new list!
5 Tower of the gods. The miniboss and great music arent the only reasons this dungeon is in the top 5. This dungeon has plenty of lazers, moving platforms, and creative puzzles. The introduction to the command melody is flawless. I really enjoy navigating the statues around the dungeon and its cool how they open the way to the next floor. The final area is also worth noting. Stepping outside to see just how high you really are is really cool.
4 Sword and shield maze. I am aware this isnt a popular pick for top 4 but it really is an amazing dungeon. The concept of 2 sections (one fire, one ice) is cool enough. There are some pretty interesting puzzles and platforming areas. My favorite part however is the incredible puzzle where you throw ice crystals from the top floor to the bottom to freeze the lava.
3 Ice ruins. Yes, another ice dungeon, but its much different from S&S maze. First of all, this dungeon has two main mechanics, An elevator and a platform that you move around the dungeon to access new areas. The pacing is done in such a brilliant way. You start the dungeon by activating the elevator, which already allows yoh to acces every floor and even get the big key within the first minute of the dungeon. Despite every floor being accessible, you can only explore one room per floor. You have to find a key on 1 specific floor and use it on another. This is the start of and incredible setup for the rest of the dungeon. The dungeon progressively gets more complicated the further you get challenging your mind and your skills. Many sequences where you enter a previous area from a higher (or lower) spot. And the ice actually plays its role well. Ice is used in certain tightwalk areas and in certain battles but its actually fun because link controls well on ice. Its easily the best Top Down Zelda dungeon in my opinion.
2 Stone tower temple. You know this dungeon already. Youve heard people gush about it before. Its honestly that good. Not only can you see the difference between night and day because most of the dungeon takes place outside, but you can even flip the dungeon on its head, LITERALLY. The variety of enemies and minibosses is definitely one of my favorite things about the dungeon. Every moment in the temple is very memorable. And since it's the final dungeon of majoras mask it takes great advantage of all of links transformations and even has a new mask near the end. All of this leading up to one of the best bosses in the entire zelda series.
1 Wind temple. Not the forest temple, Not ancient cistern, Not a twilight princess dungeon, but the wind temple from wind waker. This dungeon takes the dungeon design of wind waker and steps ot up to the next level. First of all, Makar. Makar is very useful and fun to use with his. Abilities to hover and place seeds into the ground that grow into trees. But then he gets captured pretty early in the dungeon. One of the biggest reasons i love this dungeon is the main room with a giant fan and the way it is used in the dungeon. Probably more than half of the dungeon takes place in this one room. The iron boots are used much better than in the water temple and even add a new use to the dungeons main item, the Hookshot. Of course youre probably aware of the hookshots use but it also works to bring down heavy stones. The atmosphere, puzzles and boss all make up for my favorite dungeon in the entire zelda series.

You kids will never know the incredible feeling when you stumble on the first tree with an open mouth in the original game, you walk in and hear link going down stairs, and suddenly you realized your in dungeon #1, and the music changes to a more intense feel, and that blue hue is eased over everything in what you find is a labyrinth. Only those who were young like me in 1986 will understand why you didn't even come CLOSE to naming the best Zelda dungeon, the one to start them all!

01Airbag I mean, I was born 2002 but I played the first Zelda when I was very young, so.. I had a similar feeling.

Pumpkinpie3080 Well, we'd never seen anything like that game when we first had it...it wasn't a step back in the graphics time capsule for us. It was by far the most incredible game an 8 or 9 year old, or anyone for that matter, had ever seen, that infinitely added to the moment. Jeez, you were born after Ocarina of time had come out too?!
I'm psyched kids are into Zelda and do videos like this, I guess my wish or point is, the whole Zelda experience is different, and I have to believe a bit better, because we're the rare, LUCKY few who've played every game in the series in order of release, and played on the actual day of release. Every time we play Zelda, we've and we're playing the game in its newest intimation. We've not had to feel like we're traveling in the past to get the story, we ALWAYS feel like we're moving forwards into the future. I'm not trying to say we're better, I'm only saying I WISH I could describe or give you that feeling of the first Zelda screen cutting on and it being the most amazing thing you've ever seen on a screen! It's a trip!

Shadow temple from oot is my #1. You get such a feeling of progession from adventuring through it. I genuinely was scared I'd get lost and it had some of my favorite moments, from the spiked wall trap you have to burn to the fight on the ship. It truly felt like you descending further and further into darkness.

Not saying it should be top 5, but does anyone else love the goron mines from twilight princess. TP was my first zelda game (went back and played older ones after this), but I loved the feel. Plus getting the bow for the first time felt legendary.

Yeah, mostly everything about the temple is great. I quite like dungeons that have one massive central room, and the Wind Temple is no different. Puzzles, enemies (including the miniboss), the item, and, of course, the boss are all really good. Molgera's theme is my favorite song in the entire soundtrack (title theme and miniboss theme being 2nd and 3rd respectively).

      Link the Prince of Hyrule
I find it very complex ... being overcome a lot later ... with the newly launched Final Fantasy XV and its dungeon almost impossible ... the Pitioss Dungeon ... It's an insane difficulty ... I gave up for a while ... But I'll try again soon

"The bane of my childhood, floomasters." Could not agree more my friend, I played Wind Waker and OOT as a young child as well (actually my first 2 video game I ever played), and they are to date, my most feared enemy in any video game. The way they just snatch you right off your feet and all you can do is struggle, mash all your buttons, and just pray it doesn't take you, is something I will never forget.
