Thanks for watching this look into the Master Sword's abilities! There are so many I couldn't even cover them all in detail without this video being insanely long, but another huge one is the power to break the curse on Link during Twilight Princess! A huge thank you again to Heroic Replicas for sending me such a beautiful sword, I still genuinely can't believe it!
While I personally wouldn't mind an insanely long video, this one definitely did the Master Sword justice. Thank you for putting your hard work into these videos!
That is a good idea, he could, along with NBC or Zelda lore make a long video over a month or so, maybe documenting multiple theorys, I would watch that any day
Another thing about the sword and the sacred realm: you need the sword to enter different sections of the sacred realm to get the different parts of the triforce in skyward sword, meaning that the temple of time is modeled after that place
Phantom Sword + Virtue Spirits (Also while the Master Sword is Nice when compared to a regular sword, it usually ain’t shit until it’s been tempered in some way. That thing ALWAYS needs retempering...)
Guns4 aghost Grass is literally child’s play, and a blade that’s supposed to take down bone and clash with other steels better be tempered well enough to withstand pottery or the occasional accidental wall hit. The sacred-extra-damage-dealing properties of the Master Sword are canonically pretty terrible, especially for its hype. And in OoT the “extra damage” has more to do with a teen’s vs prepubescent’s force behind it. Which, other than being able to jump around very fast, OoT Link is one of the WORST trained Links. So, the gods putting him under to age him up really goes a looooong way in saying how weak that particular Link is pre&post the 7 Years, and how skilled WW Link actually is since he only had maybe an hour of formal instruction. Sure he BECOMES a decent swordsman throughout his journey, but it’s mostly using his speed and shield to his advantage vs how he wields his main weapon. (And yeah I’m picking on OoT Link, but he’s the one that got put under, while the oldschool 2D Links (ages never stated) did not...but did a similar Just Slash&RUN!!! “style”) Basically, the swords generally do all the work (gameplay technology aside), and where the Master Sword is supposed to be the Superior Sword it...kinda fails. And is comparable to other midpoint swords if a third (or fourth) upgrade is available. Really all it has going for it is Absorbing Stuff (which Sealing&Anchoring is an offshoot of) and...it’s pretty flakey even when the Sage Batteries aren’t submerged in water so to speak
Don't forget one of it's much lesser talked about abilities: The ability to either transform an existing sheath/scabbard to fit itself into or create a fitting one out of nothing immediately after Link gets possession of it.
The detail I love most about the sword is the name. Skyward Sword hints that it was never actually given the name of Master Sword, and that the name is a simple reference to the first owner; Link, who she lovingly refers to as her master. To Fi, she will always be Master's sword.
I guess it’s real name is technically blade of evils bane or sword that seals the darkness. But master sword being what it’s traditionally be called to be known by the people of hyrule
Yeah, his items certainly make the job easier, but on more than one occasion he's supernaturally strong to begin with. Tp link can cut a giant spiderweb (spider silk being crazy strong) with a wooden sword. Botw link can stop a lynel, an animal rivaling a moose in weight, midcharge. by smacking it with a shield.
That last line about the master sword carrying the power and hope of Hyrule’s people is eerily similar to what Eiji Aonuma said about the fierce deity mask. He essentially said the exact same thing about the residents of Termina in terms of whose soul was inside the mask, so maybe that’s why the fierce deity resembles link? Maybe the fierce deity mask is the Terminian counterpart to the master sword? It does sort of make link age after all 🧐🧐
HoopsandHipHop Or the mask of Termina’s counterpart to their Hero (only he died and became a Mask to be used by others, vs Link being part of a reincarnation cycle for the Spirit of the Hero) But, the effect is somewhat the same
@@anonymousfellow8879 I don’t think that’s true. I believe that thinking in exact terms like that ruins what the Fierce Deity is actually about. The Fierce Deity isn’t a person. It’s an abstract entity congealed from the hopes of the people of Termina into a being that can protect them in their darkest hour.
...when termina doesnt actually exist...like a dimension inside another dimension...its inside of hyrule somewhere..therefor there wouldnt be another link.. Because he already exists in the dimension that termina is made in...
Oh my god...what if that's Skyward Sword's equivalent of BotW's "The Master Sword is running low on energy" message? The battery replacement is the same as waiting 10 minutes irl (technically 10 hours in-game).
I started the final boss battle for the first time and Fi immediately tried to tell me something. I thought it would be important information about the battle. Nope. Low Battery.
Zeltik... you missed a prime opportunity to drop the most iconic line in the series! The Master Sword is a vessel containing the hopes and prayers of sages and princesses passed. When Link wields it, he's not alone. It's all summed up at the very beginning of the very first game: "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this."
Sorry ta burst your bubble, but the sword link gets at the beginning of the game is from what i remember, just a plain sword. You get the Master Sword after getting past a Linel on top of a mountain. Or not, it was a while since i last beat it.
Deuce Moncura It also doesn’t do shit against Ganon. Ya need a sacred arrow for that. (The arrows are the REAL MVP. Not some dull blade that can’t even keep its temper ever.)
In the final battle in Skyward Sword, when Link strikes down Demise, he actually calls down lightning on his sword to empower it. In fact throughout that whole battle Link can enhance his Skyward Strikes with lightning. This is very similar to the Ether Medallion's animation, lending some more credibility to the fact that these powers are something inherent to the Master Sword.
Zachary Erickson Link’s sword is the one empowered with lightning. Probably doesn’t get hurt because he willed it. If anything tho, maybe just a small oversight lol
Not necessarily. Link fights Demise in a Realm of Demise’s choosing, that Demise himself takes power from. However, the Master Sword’s basically capable of absorbing anything and everything-dragon flames, Sages’ prayers, Master Ore, etc. Essentially that’s all the Sealing aspect of the sword is, and how it’s been able to be manipulated to, say, serve as an Anchor for various other Seals (like the time bubble in WW, arguably channeling the Sage of Time’s spell.) However, anything the sword absorbs to strengthen itself isn’t a one-off thing: the sword is often retempered, and the Sages’ prayers have to basically be continuous. But in Demise’s Realm? Sure he thought he basically had Link in a snare. But the sword basically turned Demise’s perfect trap against him by absorbing the properties of that environment, too. And of course the sword itself was specifically designed to be able to absorb Demise’s malice to seal it. But like the things that can be used to temper the blade are not permanent, neither is the blade’s main use as a seal: the edges “dull” and the seal weakens. It’s not a flawless design, but...a bit more Glitch&Feature as one and the same?
I love that he used the phrase "*regular* magical sword designed to oust evil." We may as well also point out that Link is no *ordinary* magic-wielding, time-traveling, dimension-traversing, boulder-tossing, fairy-capturing, ghost-busting, earthenware-smashing, generationally-recurring, nigh-mute elf kid who can also play songs by ear on an obscure 19th-century wind instrument. You know, just for clarity's sake.
You can actually say that BOTW/TOTK link or any other one of the more unique link reincarnations are no ordinary magic-wielding, time-traveling, …you get the point.
Here's something often overlooked when dealing with "ancient weapons", just because someone created something doesn't mean they conceived of every possible use for it. It could very well be that the medallions in LttP were the products of sages between OoT and LttP that studied the sword and came up with new ways to utilize its power. Technology evolves over time. New people edit and overhaul existing designs. It really shouldn't be any different with magical items. We even see in LBW that the blacksmiths at the time are capable of either upgrading the Master Sword's blade edge, or at the very least repairing the wear and tear of the ages so much that it looks like upgrading. New sages and blacksmiths probably can't (and really shouldn't be able to) vastly increase the immense power that Hylia and the Golden Goddess put into the blade, but there's no reason to think that they couldn't essentially make it more efficient. And add bells and whistles.
adventureoflinkmk2 unfortunately the master bottle broke after delivering the ball back to ganondorf, but in twilight princess, he found a new enemy-the master fishing rod
Something worth noting: At the end of Trial of the Sword in BotW, the monks at the end each have their own unique pose that other Shiekah monks throughout the game don't have. Each one is actually a pose from one of Ocarina of Time's 6 sages just before they give Link their medallion. It's fitting, since they bestow the full power of the Master Sword upon Link.
This phrase always reminds me of a small series i liked as a child called "Papyrus". It was set in ancient Egypt and basically focused on the conflict between Horus and Seth, with Seth imprisoning Horus in a sarcophargus. The other gods then chose a young fisherman called Papyrus and gifted him after a trial of courage and wits with the Sword of Horus, which had one characteristic quirk. Quote: "Remember, the Sword of Horus is only as strong as your own courage." If Papyrus was frightened the sword became dull and useless, the moment he mustered the courage to face the foe, the blade became sharp again and cut through. Not sure, which of them came first and if one was inspired by another, but this just came into my mind.
@@aureliodeprimus8018 he is adorned in gold armor, which usually is only celebratory, looks. I think he fell in combat, most likely a massive ambush, and was buried in said armor.
I like to think of the Master sword not as a blade of limitless power, but as one of limitless potential. It can absorb and reinforce itself with pretty much anything, but it's never permanent because what absorbs to get reinforced is limited.
Goddamn this holds up so well, it increases in power when it fuses with materials AND it gets stronger when bathed in intense sacred energy, if the goddess hylia were to come back in divine form she would be able to make it stronger than ever seen before as she is the source of sacred energy
Might be interesting for a future Zelda game to give the Master Sword a “skill tree” that would allow players to spec into different abilities the sword has had across various games
Each additional upgrade would add more details to the blade. For example, you have the Goddess Sword of Skyward without the gem: - With the first three upgrades, the wings are added to the base of the blade with their respective skills being the basic skills(spin attack, jump slash, etc...) - With the second set of upgrades being the extension of the wings, the gem stone, and the formation of the royal crests "bulge" towards the base of the blade providing more advanced skills(Skyward Strike, Sword Beam, etc...) - The final set would be the addition of the royal crest its self, and the glow of the gem being the final upgrades in the form of increased damage decreased magic use etc...
What if they added this to breath of the wild 2 and to upgrade you need to use an abundance of monster parts, with the higher you go up on the skill tree the more expensive they get like a dinral fang, claw, scale and horn for a full fire themed attack
Kairu Hakubi ...yeahhh...especially since Shad’s shown that the handle is too round to index reliably, and the entire hilt extremely unbalanced and too heavy (and covered in stuff that’d impale the user) We don’t need Zeltik damaging his reproduction display piece OR needing rotator cuff surgery
@@anonymousfellow8879 I'm okay with the crosshilt being left as-is, but I think it should be constructed of a nice light material, since it certainly LOOKS like it's meant to be a light fantasy material or at least something other than painted steel. and true, it's best to flatten the grip a little. though I think you can still do fine if you simply reduce the diameter, for some reason master sword replicas all seem to have really FAT handles. Yeah you won't quite be able to index it so easily, but.. well, hmm, now that I think of it, maybe ONE weighted wing and one unweighted would help with that. that's probably a stupid idea still, most versions of it don't have significantly sharp downward points on the wings so that part is fine I think.
The fact that the power of the sword is aided by the prayers of sages, that might be why it looks so worn out and beaten when we find the blade in Breath of the Wild. The prayers of the sages may have come to a stop when the calamity....or even BEFORE then, came to a stop. However, it may have maintained its power because of Zelda, having brought the blade itself to the pedestal before facing the calamity on her own.
Lord Passion nope it’s still not to it’s full glory yet it needs the power of the sages to be at full power but still the master sword is a living blade but it’ not in it’ full potential on botw bc it loses powers
@@zanediezeljuan8999 and that disproves what I said about that it restored it's blade and edge? The power to repel evil was still there as well, just limited.
@@zanediezeljuan8999 with Link's courage and raw willpower growing, the shiekah monks of old use the last of their power to empower the Master Sword, thus, making it stronger.
One thing that I find interesting is how the Master Sword keeps it's strength in BotW. Instead of being a means of holy and temporal power, being energized by prayer, the sword is referred to as a sentient being. Instead of needing to find sages, the player is told that the Master Sword will forget it's purpose and become useless for a time if they use it too much. Ik that it's for balancing purposes, so the player doesn't have an indestructible weapon, but it still brings the current function of Fi to my mind
Just remember guys, the reason we can't cast magic through the master sword is cause Link is garbage at magic. When he picks up the elemental rods in BoTW, items which their holders can use to warp the very weather, he can just kinda fling their magic out as basic sword slashes. It does make me wonder though if the bow of light is also an object of similar origin as it tends to only be manifested through a fully awakened Zelda. It also might be the type of thing Girahiem is or Gannon's trident. I just really like crafting systems and learning how they can be manipulated so I wouldn't mind a spin off game that basically shows various methods of construction in the Zelda universe.
I always found it interesting how magic is portrayed in Zelda games; primarily used by wicked sorts, rare, etc. Link is rarely given access to actual magic so much as enchanted items. It makes me think about the series' early tanglings with christian themes but I'm probably overthinking it.
That man is probably coming to you because of your damned profile picture. Thanks, I hated desserts now and now I'll go and cry in my OCD corner. (jk u-u)
@@arnox4554 It's okay, just Z-target the guy and clumsily thrust at the gunman. As long as he's a boss, he'll definitely die to the energy beams. If he isn't a boss.... uh, good luck, no mods today.
Remember, In TP it says “wisdom of the sages” that’s doesn’t necessarily mean they themselves made it, I think they gave her the advice to forge it and she was the one that created it
In Skyward Sword you find more details on the Goddess Hylia created the sword and it's spirit to guide the ancient hero. I wonder what she looked like before she sacrificed her own immortality. Edit: she advised them lol then after losing memory and reincarnating they reminded her ^_^
baten kaitos agreed, we catch a glimpse in the opening (tho it’s more of a silhouette) and a possible iteration in the manga that’s supposed to be before Skyward sword (it’s not canon tho so it’s possible they might make her look different)
Not sure if its cannon but in Hyrule Historia in the war against Demise Hylia gives the Master Sword to what I can only guess is the first Link and tells him it is a weapon of the gods that must be destroyed and reforged by the his hands so that he may use it.
15:50 actually there is extensive evidence that time was Hylia's element like wisdom is for Nayru courage is for Farore and power is for Din Also the hilt is likely made of the same material as the time shift stones found in skyward sword
"Link is only ever as strong as the items he carries with him"... aside from his absurd strength and durability Edit: and the fact that he CAN carry many tons of those very items that are also making him stronger to start.
With a solid iron ball and chain, a spinning metal cog, iron boots, a ton of normal and water bombs, as well as a lot lot more than that, are we really sure Ganon is the one who has the triforce of power
@Manek Iridius I'm talk of someone being well experience in using a sword of that size for said scenario or there would be no sense in using a weapon with minimal experience; increasing the likelihood of failing to defend themself like you were somewhat suggesting.
your ability to connect all these dots is always impressive. the games often feel disconnected from each other, but you find these insights that make the canon feel cohesive, like it just might be thought-out after all.
17:13 I am only just now noticing that the Hero of Twilight mirrors the Hero of Time's final blows towards defeating Ganon. If the sword is a sort of key that unlocks time and the Hero's Shade being this Link's ancestor, this is a pretty neat and subtle way of channeling the Spirit of the Hero through this Link. I mean, this was one of the final acts performed with this sword before putting it to rest once more. So, when pulling the blade from its pedestal and deciding to test it, I can't help but feel he was experiencing a powerful moment in the sword's history, even if unaware he did so. I could go on about this and theorize for an hour but I think this would be a great addition to the Zelda Secrets series that you could explain better than I ever could. Hope you get to read this and include it in a future video. Love your work!
Yeah it really does. I was going to order one thinking it would be a few hundred dollars... NOPE IT'S $1200! I'm sure the craftsmanship is great, but I'm just not at the point of my life where I can drop $1200 on a sword that essentially will be functioning as gamer art. I'll keep this bookmarked though for down the road.
@@Jkev24 They are fantastic replicas but yeah they are stupid overpriced. $1600 for a mastersword? I'm sorry but for $900 I can get a high quality, usable, combat ready sword from Albion.
14:15 In Ocarina of Time isn’t Zelda seen as a seventh sage? As far as her abilities and role when Hyrule Castle is falling in the endgame? This would make a lot of sense when tying Twilight and Skywards sword forging lore together. Because if Hylia made the sword with six stages and Zelda is the reincarnation of the Goddess Hylia then it makes perfect sense in my opinion.
Yes, she's called a sage in OoT and is treated as a sage as well in LttP. The explanation does make sense that if the sages and Hylia created the Master Sword, then Zelda and the sages are connected similarly and perform similar function.
With the time powers of the Master Sword, it makes sense seeing as it was the Goddess Sword previously, and as it was forged by Hylia, the Goddess of Time.
true theres is a quote like that but don't forget that the original ALTTP is old (even with the remake on gba later on) and u can read that with the book of mudora which permit you to read ancient hylian language so it's not mutually exclusive
I like the theory of the gem embedded in the blade being a timeshift stone, shown to exist prior to Skyward Sword and controlling time, but the power of the sages also makes sense. Perhaps both could be true in different circumstances.
More like the hilt and handle are made out of the time stones cause they are both blueish just like the ocarina of time, the metal might be from godly origins, and the gems haven't had a formal explanation
The hilt/crossguard could be an alloy of timeshift stone, but the gem is clearly shown to be the dwelling-place of Fi. In fact, at the end of SS, Ghirahim is shown to have a stone of the same shape and color in his chest...
It is hard to think of any offensive magic wielded by the Hero that matches the power of the three medallions from A Link to the Past. I mean, it's magic channeled through the Master Sword itself for devastating effecting from weather control, to earthquakes, to causing armies to simply explode. Heck, the Ether medallion can freeze enemies that are normally immune to cold! The range of destructive effect is also unparalleled; like Hyrule Warriors level destruction IN a mainline Zelda game.
I like to think that perhaps Hylia commanded the sages to forge the sword and once she found their work worthy of her power blessed it. That way both stories are equally true.
Finally a video with a promotion to something that's actually relevant to the people who watch the video Thank you for bringing this wonderful artist to our attention
This was one issue I had with OoT: Link pulls the sword, proving himself as the Hero of Time, and THEN was sealed away in the sacred realm for seven years when Ganondorf snuck in behind him, thus resulting in seven years of Ganondorf wreaking havoc, gaining more power, and basically laying waste to Hyrule. Then, after seven years, Link is allowed out, wakes up to a Hyrule that could only be described to him as "WTF!?!," and has to correct the entire kingdom like some divine embodiment of Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln and Joan of Arc that would have been absolutely unnecessary if they hadn't made it so that a ten-year-old could get the sword. For all intents and purposes, Link was sealed into solitary for seven years and Ganondorf ran rampant all because the remaining sage said "You must be THIS tall to ride."
Honestly I just feel bad for almost all of the Links. But OoT Link in particular. Poor kid lost his mom when he was just baby, lost his only father figure at ten and is forced into speedrun puberty and at the end loses the one friend who was with him throughout all of it. Not to mention all the things that he went through in MM.
Since the Malice always comes back I think the Master Sword "sealing" power is just sending evil to the future, where it chooses a new hero and the cycle begins once again. It reminds me of what one of the Elder Scrolls did to Alduin in Skyrim.
I’m really glad that the sages can do more than make a bridge, open a portal, and sharpen the master sword. I don’t know about every zelda game but for most of the 3D games, the sages just seem like a formality to have as a cheering squad for link.
Well, a Master Sword promotion in a Master Sword video. And the Fierce Deity sword? That's just awesome! As far as the Master Sword in the games, I've always liked how it acted as a key in OoT. I didn't know about how the Medallions worked with the Master Sword though, that's a pretty neat detail! (Also, excellent note about the Master Sword's origins! I wondered if anyone else thought of that!)
The idea that Rauru's Light Medallion unlocks the power of time travel is so interesting! I always thought it was weird that the Medallions didn't seem to do anything in the game. It makes me think, if the MS is the lock in this analogy, what powers could the other Medallions of OoT be keys to...? And how does the blue material that comprises the hilt of the MS and the OoT itself - likely to be Timeshift Stones - play into this...?
I saw a theory that time shift stones revert the master sword to its former state, like mending, and that's why you have to wait for the master sword to repair itself in BotW
@@memedumpster3684 I have seen the same video as him, the theory goes that the hilt that is made of timeshift stones mends the blade as it gets broken, and the reason it stays so fresh after thousands of years is that it never actually moves from it's original creation time, or that it does and just reverts back to that every time something happens to it, and that the repair is initiated by Fi
Interesting that the three spells match the Sages associated with the spiritual stones! Slotting their names in gives us Saria's Wind, Darunia's Fire, and Ruto's LOVE, which coincidentally makes two Zora princesses that have (or would have) given Link a powerful protective spell
I like this explanation because it gives a reason that the first sword in The Legend of Zelda looks rusted, but can still shoot beams like the Master Sword. In my headcanon, it IS the Master Sword, but the post-apocalyptic world of Zelda and Zelda2 have left it without prayer, and without the strength to mend itself (I mean, you're tying rupees to the ends of sticks to make arrows. Pretty much Fallout over here) But I maintain that you wash the rust off in the waterfall where you get the White Sword, and you complete its blessing by visiting the grave of either a former Link or a Sage that finishes imbuing it. Obviously the designs and whatnot are off, especially with the way the art is drawn and how the Master Sword wasn't even conceptualized until Link to the Past, but I'm rather fond of the theory of having a single weapon that grows stronger with you as you adventure rather than tossing a reliable companion as soon as one prettier and sharper catches your eye. ...One of the reasons I couldn't get into Breath of the Wild... *mumble mumble*...
But you're actually getting different swords in Zelda 1. The Magic Sword isn't the White Sword which isn't the basic sword. It's more likely the base sword is a relatively weak bronze weapon.
It's worth noting that in the end of LttP, which canonically takes place before LoD, it states that the Master Sword sleeps forever, meaning it never reawakens. Maybe the basic sword is the Master Sword, but never awakens because the hope and prayer that fueled it before was gone by then. It certainly paints the first three games as much darker, being a timeline in which the magical world is slowly dying because the Hero of Time failed and the Hero of Legend is aptly named because the legend of the Master Sword ended with him.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio One of the swords could be the Noble Sword from the Oracle games, which has all the powers that the Master Sword has in those games, it just deals less damage.
@@seandobbins2231 The Oracle games have the Master Sword in a linked game, and the dubiously canon Stone Tablets for the Satelleview has a new hero from another world known as the Hero of Light use the Master Sword.
all zelda "theorists" post the exact same stuff and it's not a theory, it's they read the lore form the game. not even hidden lore just didn't click skip on any cutscenes. This video was almost 20 minutes and he said "yeah the master sword is linked with time, and also if you use separate things you can do cool stuff."
It’s interesting how in WW when you pull the master sword out, the enemies become unfrozen in time. Then when you do the final strike on Ganondorf, he becomes frozen and washed away in time. Well, he turns into a stone but similar idea
I love the work from heroic replicas, the only thing I want to say is that the items are very expensive (understandably) so it’s definitely something to save up for, vs something to just “purchase” most of the items being upwards of 1000$
It’s kinda crazy how he guessed some of the key things in Tears of the Kingdom. Like the abilities of wind and lightning being key abilities of sages. Or that the master swords ability to control time comes from a Sage as well, rather than from the sword itself, and how it can be powered up by bathing in the light of Hylia, etc
the one reason the cycle is permanent is because skyward sword link let demise finish his sentence, and he didn't kill him, he absorbed him into the sword
@@asim4243 And if they released him, he would be impossible to destroy. He simply manifests after a few generations every time he is beaten. No matter what they do, his curse keeps Hyrule from advancing into an Industrial society due to such frequent warfare against incarnations of his malice.
All this talk about medallions and sages is, in my opinion, very fitting for some of the very first words uttered by the series. "It's dangerous to go alone.." Link is, for as long as he holds the master sword, never alone.
So basically, the Master Sword is an immensely capable vessel that can have many powers poured into it and used to increase and augment it's abilities. Without such things it's just a well made and very hard to break blade.
The Master Sword seems to have an "upgrade" function as well since after the Guardians infected with malice in BotW almost killed Link it got the ability to temporarily use more Power when malice is nearby making it one of the few weapons capable of effectively fight guardians.
No day can be called a complete day without a Zeltik's documentary about Zelda. It's amazing and terrifying at the same time and i hope in the future games it's power can be more vast and clear.
i've watched most of your vids but this is by far my favorite. it's such an optimistic take on the themes of the series, and i think it fits perfectly since zelda games love to remind us that no version of link saves the world alone. the master sword being a vessel for everyone's hopes for salvation is the perfect metaphor. great work on this video, bud
An interesting point of interest on the topic of the sages: After Ganondorf won and took the Triforce for himself at the start of the Downfall timeline, It was the Princess Zelda and the Sages that managed to stop him and seal him away, even though he had the full power of the Triforce.
3:17 “The master sword is usually found halfway through the game being in some lost forgotten temple being the only way to kill the games final boss” OOT speed runners: “young link go stab stab”
I mean, he's still not wrong, the only reason young link can beat ganon is that the fight literally gives you the master sword via the "knocking your sword away" thing. Still pretty funny though
The theory about why the medallions were once equipable and how they might've worked was the most believable/best theory about them I've heard so far. That's the second very viable Zelda theory I've heard in the past few months. That might not sound like much but when I've gone a couple of years without hearing a theory that I haven't already heard or thought about myself than 2 within just a few months seems like a lot lol. Thank you again, Zeltik
this makes so much sense symbolically I love your reading of the Legend of Zelda it's always about the links between people and Link helping them instead of a power fantasy or a tropey hero narrative.
In almost all of the packages I send out, I include a note that says "Hey! Listen!" and then a warning to not harm persons, pets, or property when you wield the Master Sword. It ends with a Zelda quote: “Ganondorf, pitiful man… without a strong righteous mind, he could not control the power of the gods.” -- Princess Zelda
if i had describe his channel in one word: wow . The amount of time and effort writing scripts and doing all this stuff is mindblowing for a 18 minute video. He is realy underrated and an overall role model and inspiration tysm!
Its interesting how many times Link, or well, an incarnation of Link, has some control over time. From being able to travel through time to freezing time to slowing it, if Link actually had full control over these abilities, Ganon wouldn't stand a chance.
I feel the need to point out that Hylia seems to be the goddess of light *and* time, in that the master sword, imbued with her power, can activate the Gate of Time, purge curses and repel darkness. Temples to Hylia have strong connections to time as a concept, and tend to have motifs of gears. The Gate of Time was crafted for her and is housed in her temple, which later becomes the temple of time. The Gate of time within is then used to create the Sacred Door that's impervious to Ganondorf's advances. I would argue its time-bending properties have to do with the pedestal in which it was housed- hence why those abilities do not exist in games where it's not housed in the Temple of Time- as well as the Gate of Time being activated by the pedestal. The power was not lost, rather, it was never the sword's to hold. The blade only ever acted as a key; be it to the Sacred Realm, to time, to the power of the sages and to the power to seal away evil. That last power, that's not inherent to the sword but rather, to its wielder. A power that is earned through the journey to find the sword and pull it from its pedestal.
In aLttP Lore: The Master Sword and the Silver Arrow are the ultimate weapons that can defeat even Ganon himself! In aLttP Gameplay: Double damage. It can shoot sword beams at full health. That's pretty cool, I guess. In OoT Lore: The Master Sword, the Blade of Evil's Bane, was hidden behind the Door of Time by the ancients of Hyrule. It is the gateway to the sacred world where the triforce resides. It can be used as a vessel to travel up and down the river of time. Once again, it, along with the power of the goddess, is the only weapon capable of defeating Ganon. In OoT Gameplay: I mean... you can use the shield with it, so it has that over the Biggoron's Sword? In WW Lore: The Master Sword, the Blade of Evil's Bane, buried in the depths of the sea in a long-forgotten kingdom. You must climb to the top of a tower just to prove yourself worthy to the gods for the right to even walk the lands this blade is hidden within. The blade has been used by a long-forgotten hero to completely stop time in this forgotten land and seal away the power of Ganon. Though its power has grown weak, with the help of the descendants of the sages of ages past, it can be restored to its former glory, finally granting you the ability to stand face-to-face against the King of Evil himself! In WW Gameplay: It does double the damage of the regular sword, that's pretty rad. In BotW Lore: The Master Sword, the Blade of Evil's Bane, is our only hope of defeating Calamity Ganon and saving the world from total chaos! This weapon and arrows powered by ancient shiekah technology are the only way to defeat the guardians Ganon has seized control of. This weapon is powerful enough to allow the hero to destroy an entire army of monsters all on his own. This blade has seen countless battles and still returns to pristine condition with the blessing of the goddess. In BotW Gameplay: Wait, the Master Sword is in this game? OH, it's that weapon that has to recharge every 10 minutes. Pretty sure I have other weapons that deal more damage though...?
I just assumed the Master Sword isn't in a great condition in BotW. Yeah sure it's useable, but only just barely. It needed more time to recover from being nearly destroyed 100 years ago, but lore-wise, it's needed right now, so you have to wield its power sparingly.
@@Draeckon I wouldn't say it's "needed" at all considering the game is designed in such a way that you can beat Calamity Ganon without so much as ever setting foot in the forest. Really, the Master Sword isn't much short of an accessory for fanservice in this game. And honestly, I think it would be pretty cool if the over reliance on the Master Sword was explored further in future games. Maybe a game's story could revolve around the master sword being destroyed?
@@aurafox1 it isn't required, no, not because it is weaker or ganon is weaker, but because zelda has the full triforce this time, giving her a wish, which she used to beat ganon
I love how the very footage Zeltik shows flatout say that the magic of the Medallions COMES from the Medallions, but because Link does a sword animation, he attributes that power to the sword, even when the only other game that has the Medallions also flatout mentions the power comes from them. You even try to say the Medallion's power comes from Sages when, again, their origin is revealed in another game. He channels the power through the blade in ALTTP, this doesn't mean the power comes from it. You needing the sword means that only the hero that wields the Master Sword can use these Medallions, not that the sword itself uses it.
Raru architect of the temple of time in ocarina of time: clearly pure hyruleian. Raru king of light in zelda totk: apparently a new species of being called zonai.
I guess now the name "Master Sword" finally makes some sense... It's not named so because it's just a really well-crafted sword. It's named so because it allows the wielder to access the power of Sages and Goddesses. Similar to how in embedded systems or computers you may have a Master device and several Slave devices. In this case, the Master Sword is the Master device, while the medallions are the Slave devices. The Slave devices are often pretty useless without the Master device to control them and give them instructions, similar to how the ALTTP medallions are useless without the Master Sword to channel their powers through. These are just my thoughts, of course. I may or may not have missed something
What you're describing sounds exactly like SPI communication (Serial Peripheral Interface) where a Master device sends a clock signal and instructions to slave devices (using the Chip Select line to choose each device in turn) to perform various functions. It makes some sense to think about it in computing terms as I heard the original concept for the series was some kind of computer or internet game where Link was used as the Link between sites or network locations. I forget where I heard this now but your comment was an interesting way to think about it
people always talk about Goku vs Naruto vs One Punch Man, etc. but no one realizes how strong Link is Link can summon lightning, reflect projectiles, revive himself multiple times, slow down time 20x, parry Lynels and Stone Talusi with enough force to launch a rocket and his arm would be completely fine, he can climb entire mountains with his own bare hands, and can even time travel. And that's not even all he can do. AND THAT'S NOT EVEN THE STRONGEST LINK! Hero of Time Link can transform himself into a fucking GOD if we wanted to!
Between this theory, the fact that monolith is helping with botw2, and how much fun in having replaying Xenoblade Chronicles again.... I really want a Zelda game where the sage medallions can be equipped to the master sword the way Xenoblade has weapon and armor gems. Water medallion restores health, Shadow medallion improves speed / evasion, Fire medallion adds blaze damage, etc. Hell, Botw already experimented with different armours and stay boosts, so why not?
I don't know, that seems WAYYY too technical for younger kids. Besides, Xenoblade Chronicles is a great game with very interesting mechanics and features, but I don't think they'd fit the Zelda series very well.
I like the idea of the master sword being a modular weapon, kind of like the amulet of the trollhunter. When the hero needs it, the sages, or the goddesses, can grant him the keys to greater power, in the form of medallions, sacred flames, the master trials, etc.
Yay
That is a good idea, he could, along with NBC or Zelda lore make a long video over a month or so, maybe documenting multiple theorys, I would watch that any day
Another thing about the sword and the sacred realm: you need the sword to enter different sections of the sacred realm to get the different parts of the triforce in skyward sword, meaning that the temple of time is modeled after that place
You need a voice acting role in a future Zelda game
Zeltik: "of all the swords that Link has had in his arsenal, one sword stands out from the rest"
Me: The BigGoron Sword
I was gonna say Great Fairy Sword.
Phantom Sword + Virtue Spirits
(Also while the Master Sword is Nice when compared to a regular sword, it usually ain’t shit until it’s been tempered in some way. That thing ALWAYS needs retempering...)
I think your finger slipped when you tried to type out Korok Leaf.
Finn Jager I am a stick
Guns4 aghost
Grass is literally child’s play, and a blade that’s supposed to take down bone and clash with other steels better be tempered well enough to withstand pottery or the occasional accidental wall hit.
“style”)
Basically, the swords generally do all the work (gameplay technology aside), and where the Master Sword is supposed to be the Superior Sword it...kinda fails.
I totally thought about that the other day
That would be real
To rest the sacred Master sword
You needed a unique sheath

You got the blade of evils bane! With a free sheath!
And it's a really cool-looking sheath, too!
The detail I love most about the sword is the name. Skyward Sword hints that it was never actually given the name of Master Sword, and that the name is a simple reference to the first owner; Link, who she lovingly refers to as her master. To Fi, she will always be Master's sword.

The most important ability of the master sword is to notify when the wii control has low battery
Oh my god...what if that's Skyward Sword's equivalent of BotW's "The Master Sword is running low on energy" message? The battery replacement is the same as waiting 10 minutes irl (technically 10 hours in-game).

And it’s rusty in BotW, because the batteries 🔋 are low. Someone should get the batteries changed.

Zeltik... you missed a prime opportunity to drop the most iconic line in the series! The Master Sword is a vessel containing the hopes and prayers of sages and princesses passed. When Link wields it, he's not alone. It's all summed up at the very beginning of the very first game: "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this."
Like the end of Rise of Skywalker but better?
Sorry ta burst your bubble, but the sword link gets at the beginning of the game is from what i remember, just a plain sword. You get the Master Sword after getting past a Linel on top of a mountain. Or not, it was a while since i last beat it.
Deuce Moncura
It also doesn’t do shit against Ganon. Ya need a sacred arrow for that. (The arrows are the REAL MVP. Not some dull blade that can’t even keep its temper ever.)
This! Yes!
But that was a wooden sword..
I guess it might contain the hopes and prayers of the tree it was made of.
I thought outside of the final battle he channeled sunlight into the sword.
When Steve used Moljnir to call down lightning, it was frickin Skyward Sword
Zachary Erickson The blade is made from Divine materials, so it may not be as affected by the elements.

It’s nothing compared to the master bottle, the bane of Ganondorf during tennis battles

Something worth noting:
At the end of Trial of the Sword in BotW, the monks at the end each have their own unique pose that other Shiekah monks throughout the game don't have. “A sword wields no strength unless the hand that holds it has courage” -Hero’ Shade

I like to think of the Master sword not as a blade of limitless power, but as one of limitless potential. It can absorb and reinforce itself with pretty much anything, but it's never permanent because what absorbs to get reinforced is limited.
This holds up, it's power is increased by fuses in totk, but the item you fused will break when the blade runs out of energy.

That would be so cool
Hire this man as a Developer
Each additional upgrade would add more details to the blade.
For example, you have the Goddess Sword of Skyward without the gem:
- With the first three upgrades, the wings are added to the base of the blade with their respective skills being the basic skills(spin attack, jump slash, etc...)
- With the second set of upgrades being the extension of the wings, the gem stone, and the formation of the royal crests "bulge" towards the base of the blade providing more advanced skills(Skyward Strike, Sword Beam, etc...)
- The final set would be the addition of the royal crest its self, and the glow of the gem being the final upgrades in the form of increased damage decreased magic use etc...
What if they added this to breath of the wild 2 and to upgrade you need to use an abundance of monster parts, with the higher you go up on the skill tree the more expensive they get like a dinral fang, claw, scale and horn for a full fire themed attack
That would be awesome

and true, it's best to flatten the grip a little. though I think you can still do fine if you simply reduce the diameter, for some reason master sword replicas all seem to have really FAT handles. Yeah you won't quite be able to index it so easily, but.. well, hmm, now that I think of it, maybe ONE weighted wing and one unweighted would help with that. that's probably a stupid idea
still, most versions of it don't have significantly sharp downward points on the wings so that part is fine I think.

"Master, the batteries in your Wiimote are nearly depleted."
Basically Fi has an existential crisis when you overuse the master sword?
I personally wished they'd keep the Hylian shield and Master Sword indestructible, the durability thing is annoying.
With some weapons it makes sense, but I wish others would just get "damaged" and you can repair them at a blacksmith's

With the time powers of the Master Sword, it makes sense seeing as it was the Goddess Sword previously, and as it was forged by Hylia, the Goddess of Time.
and that folks, is why the sword runs out of energy in breath of the wild ...
not enough people alive to feed it with hope
That... actually makes a lot of sense.

I like the theory of the gem embedded in the blade being a timeshift stone, shown to exist prior to Skyward Sword and controlling time, but the power of the sages also makes sense. Perhaps both could be true in different circumstances.
Not even different circumstances. If the Sages helped Hylia forge the OG Goddess blade. This would have been fully intentional Imo.
More like the hilt and handle are made out of the time stones cause they are both blueish just like the ocarina of time, the metal might be from godly origins, and the gems haven't had a formal explanation
Timeshift stones are blue...
I think it might be some cool rock Link found in Skyward Sword and decided to put on the master sword because he liked it
The hilt/crossguard could be an alloy of timeshift stone, but the gem is clearly shown to be the dwelling-place of Fi. In fact, at the end of SS, Ghirahim is shown to have a stone of the same shape and color in his chest...
I always thought of e gem being a backup generator of sorts to the sword’s power to repel evil.

Thank you for bringing this wonderful artist to our attention
This was one issue I had with OoT:
Link pulls the sword, proving himself as the Hero of Time, and THEN was sealed away in the sacred realm for seven years when Ganondorf snuck in behind him, thus resulting in seven years of Ganondorf wreaking havoc, gaining more power, and basically laying waste to Hyrule.
Ganon the World Eater
"It's someone else's problem" wow lol
@@angelhernandezvega6064 😮🤔🤯
@The No.1 Guy Enlighten me.
Pretty much Fallout over here)
But I maintain that you wash the rust off in the waterfall where you get the White Sword, and you complete its blessing by visiting the grave of either a former Link or a Sage that finishes imbuing it.

He looks like he turned into stone but he looks the exact same as the enemies while they are frozen in time, so yeah it makes sense.

All this talk about medallions and sages is, in my opinion, very fitting for some of the very first words uttered by the series. "It's dangerous to go alone.."
Link is, for as long as he holds the master sword, never alone.
So basically, the Master Sword is an immensely capable vessel that can have many powers poured into it and used to increase and augment it's abilities. Without such things it's just a well made and very hard to break blade.
It's a blade that works really well as a catalyst for the power of sages or gods, or even the hope of people.
It's actually alive it becomes stronger when bathed in light
Up next on Zeltik:
The TERRIFYING power of the BOAT OAR
Yeah, the boat oar is the most powerful thing in all of legend of zelda
The Master Sword seems to have an "upgrade" function as well since after the Guardians infected with malice in BotW almost killed Link it got the ability to temporarily use more Power when malice is nearby making it one of the few weapons capable of effectively fight guardians.

i've watched most of your vids but this is by far my favorite. it's such an optimistic take on the themes of the series, and i think it fits perfectly since zelda games love to remind us that no version of link saves the world alone. the master sword being a vessel for everyone's hopes for salvation is the perfect metaphor. great work on this video, bud

An interesting point of interest on the topic of the sages: After Ganondorf won and took the Triforce for himself at the start of the Downfall timeline, It was the Princess Zelda and the Sages that managed to stop him and seal him away, even though he had the full power of the Triforce.

Did heroic replica say to you : it's dangerous to go alone take this! Upon sending you that master sword? If not, missed opportunity
"Master using it and you can have this"
In almost all of the packages I send out, I include a note that says "Hey! Listen!" and then a warning to not harm persons, pets, or property when you wield the Master Sword. It ends with a Zelda quote:

Its interesting how many times Link, or well, an incarnation of Link, has some control over time. From being able to travel through time to freezing time to slowing it, if Link actually had full control over these abilities, Ganon wouldn't stand a chance.
>the master sword is a key to the lock of time
>The medallions are the key to the lock of master sword
Bro stay consistent PLEASE.
Eyyy nice, Totk kinda confirms this
The Master Sword is the key to victory as the king hope exist to power the blade it will unlock the path.
Twilight Princess: lets you turn back into a human whenever you want
Skyward Sword: you guys get to choose swords?
I love how the very footage Zeltik shows flatout say that the magic of the Medallions COMES from the Medallions, but because Link does a sword animation, he attributes that power to the sword, even when the only other game that has the Medallions also flatout mentions the power comes from them. You even try to say the Medallion's power comes from Sages when, again, their origin is revealed in another game.
He channels the power through the blade in ALTTP, this doesn't mean the power comes from it. You needing the sword means that only the hero that wields the Master Sword can use these Medallions, not that the sword itself uses it.
So it's more the Master Sword is the only working channeling method for that energy, not the source of it.
7:15 I like how he avoids spoilers for a secret almost everybody knows

This is one of the best zelda videos I've seen in a long while. It really made me appreciate the series again
I forget where I heard this now but your comment was an interesting way to think about it
@@AsilarWindsailor Right, SPI. I had forgotten the name, but that was actually what I had in mind when making the comparison in the first place.
people always talk about Goku vs Naruto vs One Punch Man, etc.
but no one realizes how strong Link is
Link can summon lightning, reflect projectiles, revive himself multiple times, slow down time 20x, parry Lynels and Stone Talusi with enough force to launch a rocket and his arm would be completely fine, he can climb entire mountains with his own bare hands, and can even time travel. And that's not even all he can do. AND THAT'S NOT EVEN THE STRONGEST LINK! Hero of Time Link can transform himself into a fucking GOD if we wanted to!
Ok
True. BUT his powers all have pretty major restrictions
When the hero needs it, the sages, or the goddesses, can grant him the keys to greater power, in the form of medallions, sacred flames, the master trials, etc.
i only saw the sponsor at the beginning but i'm already liking this video, those swords are LEGENDARILY AWESOME!!!
