Haha, do you follow him on Twitter, Timothy? I don't, but my friend does and Breezy still has some good one liners every now and then. Thanks for watching.
I am a huge fan of Curtis Joseph and a lot of times when I look at these lists he is very often overlooked and I want to personally thank you for putting him on there. He may not of had the awards or sadly no Stanley cups but in my ever humble opinion no goalie made a team better with little to no defense in front of him than Curtis Joseph!
I loved watching Cujo play! So much fun to watch! I've had the pleasure of meeting him a few times away from the rink and he's a great person. Always friendly and always has time for fans. He's on twitter now and he'll still talk hockey with you that way. Thanks for watching, Brian.
Tim Thomas is the best goaltender in Bruins history. Though his tenure in Boston was brief he still accomplished more than Rask aside from the lifetime stats. 4-time all-star, Jennings trophy, 2 Vezina trophies, Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe. 2010-11 was one of the single greatest seasons ever for a goaltender. 35 wins in 57 starts, 0.938 SV, 2.00GAA and 9 SO and robbed of the Hart trophy because he was an American goaltender!
Evaluating short term success is hard. For those few years, Thomas as unbeatable. Although Rask has never been as unbeatable as Thomas was at his best, Rask has been very good for a long time now and I think that balance of consistency and longevity puts Rask at the top. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Thomas is just behind Rask in both games played and wins. Career save percentage is identical. GAA is very close. It wasn't short term (7+ years) and it isn't hard to judge. The accolades posted above proves that. And Thomas has been just as if not more consistent than Rask. Rask was in net when they blew a 3-0 series lead and 3-0 game 7 lead. Rask was the guy when they blew a lead with a minute and a half left in game 6 of the cup. Rask was the starter in back to back epic regular season collapses to miss the playoffs. Yeah, saying consistency puts Rask over Thomas is absurd.
Billy Smith was an above average goalie in the regular season...but he would turn it up to high gear in the playoffs. And I'm sorry, but the Stanley Cup is the ultimate achievement for any player, and especially a goaltender. Well deserved HoF netminder.
I agree that the Stanley Cup is the ultimate achievement, but winning lots should not qualify you for the HOF. Henri Richard has 11 cup rings but he was only an ok player playing for a super team over many years. The Pocket was not the reason Montreal won the Cup(s). Smith's career numbers are quite poor, even when compared to his contemporaries. I appreciate your POV and thanks for watching.
Yeah, the narrator is an absolute idiot. He doesn't understand that goalies didn't played as much in the 80s as they do now. Smitty was great. One of the best money goalies of all time. And Gretzky said he was the toughest goalie he ever faced.
I have a name, Brad. Use it. I am fully aware that goalies did not play as much then as they do now. That was made clear in the video. I doubt 99 would have anything terribly positive to say about Smith after Battle Ax nearly broke Wayne's leg with a malicious slash. Thanks for watching, Brad.
A great list the criteria and prerequisites make this list 💯! Another great vid. I’d love to see a video on the best players of all time of the defunct nhl teams!
Hmmm, great idea, Owen. I'll put that in my folder of things to do and I'll get to eventually. I really like doing the old stuff, but the videos do take much longer to produce. Thanks for the comment and thank for watching.
Love some me some Turco. He was clumsy sometimes in net and often gave up some questionable goals on questionable plays. Got the opportunity to meet him twice now and every time he's really nice.
I think Turco had a pretty nice NHL career. Not HOF stuff, but not a journeyman either. A lot of people have forgotten him, but he was a good goalie. He made Team Canada's Olympic roster in 06.
14:21 patrick lalime makes a save after blundering the puck into a turnover, skates back and swan dives to catch the puck in a virtually impossible save, ive been looking for the whole clip of that save for years this is the first time ive ever seen it again oin youtube. does anyone know where i can find this full clip?
Love the video! I think a cool video series would be top 10 or 5 players for each franchise. In 30 videos. If you could do that series, that'd be incredible!
Top 10 Players per franchise is something I would love to do! I may also do a top 6 players per franchise so I have the best at each position. Thanks for commenting and watching, Nigel.
In 5-6 years you may have to update this list. I’ll bet Jake Allen will cement himself as the Blues best goalie ever and I think Braden Holtby will slightly surpass Kolzig.
I hope I'll be able to update a lot of my lists in 5-6 years. The game is always changing, new great players come along. This is why we'll be able to talk hockey forever. Thanks for commenting and watching, Samuel.
That's a good idea, Mika! There are so many to choose from. Three Hall of Famers come to mind right away: Oates, Ciccarelli and Belfour. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Martin St-Louis is the first to come to mind for me. One Stanley Cup, two Art Ross (I think he is the oldest player to win the trophy) and one Hart. One of my absolute favorite players growing up
Marty for sure would be near the top of a best of undrafted list. Beautiful goal scorer. Just FYI, but Montreal's Herb Gardiner is the oldest NHL MVP when he won the Hart in 1927 at the age of 35. Dominik Hasek won the Hart when he was 33. St. Louis won it when he was 28. Still older than most when you consider Gretzky won his first at age 19, Mario was 22, Crosby was 19, Ovie, 22 and McDavid was 20. Younger mans game now.
Good idea, Jeremy. I may tweek it and say Top 10 players turned management so I can open it up beyond just coaches. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Amazing video as always. I would love to see a video about players with great talent who got their career cut short and who could've done much better had it not been for injuries. I'm thinking of guys like Bryan Berard for example or Adam Deadmarsh.
Great idea, Etienne! Berard made a triumphant comeback but what would have been like without getting a Marian Hossa stick in the eyeball? Even going back a number of years, but Carl Brewer retired early because coach Punch Imlach gave him horrible anxiety attacks. Thanks for commenting and watching.
He just didn't play long enough in Detroit, Brian. Really just spent 2.5 years there. Although Hasek is much better than Osgood, I had to consider the time. Otherwise I might has said Hasek was Ottawa's best goalie, too. Thanks for watching.
This is what defines the all-time greats though, does it not? Hasek was the best goalie on any team he was on, as was Belfour, Brodeur, Joseph, and Roy (Toronto excluded: Joseph was better in his time in TO than Belfour IMO). These are the legendary greats that defined the era from 1988 -- roughly the end of the 2004 lockout.
No goalie was more fun to watch than Hasek. I loved watching players react to his saves. They couldn't believe it! Always funny! Thanks for watching, Mr. Master-Me.
He has fun with it, but he FELT it (stopping the puck). You lay it all the line and just you put it all on the line. You sacrifice you body if need be....
So Plante is not eligible as his prime was before 1967, but hoped you would have taken Dryden over Roy. I am old enough to have seen both play and my pick for the Habs is without question Dryden
By the way, does Cooper still make goalie equipment? Just curious. And any goalie with a save percentage over 91% is good by me. Fleury was the best in Pittsburgh while Rob Holland and Gordie Laxton were tied for the worst.
Sweden have been catching up a bit though. Goalies with at least 20 games so far: H.Lundqvist (Rangers) *Obviously* R.Lehner (Sabres) J.Markström (Canucks) E.Läck (Flames) Almost at 20 games: A.Nilsson (Canucks) A.Forsberg (Blackhawks) Finland do have a stronger tradition of goalies in general, but especially goalies who have claimed that first spot and cemented their place in the history for sure for as long as I've lived and been interested in hockey anyway. I have no clue of the history there between the nations before my time though (1991).
Awesome video! 👍 I think you should put some effort to the thumbnails of your videos. I promise it will bring more views to your videos. You deserve them.
I've had others tell me the same thing. It is something I know I should do, but that would mean slowing down the production of my videos. But I have to say you're right, KoRno. Thanks for the advice and compliment.
Hey, but Mike Smith looks great after 20 something games so far. Better than I thought he would be. That Calgary defense is not what I expected either. Thanks for watching, Chocolate Moose.
I have a special place for McLean too, that's why I threw him in there. But his numbers are no where near Lu's. I picked Roy because he made Montreal good. Without him, they would be very ordinary. You can't say the same thing for Dryden's Habs. Thanks for watching, Alan.
Give him a few more years and Andrei Vasilievsky will surpass both Khabibulin and Bishop in all categories. He's got plenty of time with that core in place on Tampa Bay.
Deservedly so. Roy is easily the best for Colorado and I think he's a better goalie than Dryden for Montreal. Dryden played behind one of the best lineups in history. Roy was the Habs best and most reliable player for them during his time in the 80s and 90s. Thanks for watching, Mr. Master-Me.
OMG .. you seriusly did NOT just miss out on The greatest Flyers goalie of all time ... P Lindbergh?! If his life had not been cut too short ... he would have been the greatest goalie in NHL history .. without any doubt.
Sorry hockey nerd. I dont care how much potential Pele Lindburg had. Even if he turned out to be as great as you say....he aint never gonna beat back to back Stanley Cups and back to back Conn Smythe awards that the great Bernie Parent got! That really happened!! Dont try to make your case at the expense of the best goalie on this list with your projected dream predictions you non-fan!
I know is suggested worst starter per franchise so I'll put some rules in place. They must play a minimum of 2 seasons and playoffs do not count and that would disqualify a few players so Craig Billington as hard as he worked would still be the senators for example. I am also curious to try a different set. Best homegrown goalie (drafted) and best traded for goalie per franchise. So for Pittsburgh the best stated is Marc Fleury. And their best traded for would be possibly Tom Barrasso
I have that idea still in my file, Ronald. I have so many videos to do and not enough time to research, write and produce them all quickly. Thanks again for the suggestion. I haven't forgotten about you. Hang in there. Thanks for watching.
Grew up watching Cheevers but Task is better. Good call there. I know that this video is four years old and Lightning fans hated losing Bishop but Vassy turned out to be the greatest goalie in Lightning history and perhaps, with turn out to be , the greatest goalie of all time. This guy is in a class by himself.
Hey Hugh, Gilles Gratton had that scary looking Jaguar face mask. Really intimidating stuff. It's in the HOF now. I also really liked Bryan Hayward's Sharks mask with the dripping blood.
If I'm not mistaken, Billy Smith remains second all-time in playoff winning percentage. Dryden is first. Also, Gretzky says he's the best goalie he's ever played against.
The ones I don’t agree with are Boston (Gerry cheevers), Edmonton (grant fuhr), Minnesota (devan dubnyk), Montreal (ken Dryden), St. Louis (Curtis Joseph), and as of no Winnipeg (Connor Hellebuyck). Hellebuyck may changed considering he hasn’t played enough time yet, but with Winnipeg’s success, I think Hellebuyck is the guy for Winnipeg. Also I understand this vid was made very shortly into the season
I'm a huge Cujo fan. He just didn't play in St Lou long enough. Same thing with Dubnyk. Just not there long enough. However, Dubnyk could very soon surpass Backstrom's team marks. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Had to check the date after you went with Pavlov... After this season I don't think it'll be long till that changes. Also, fun fact: Winnipeg's "Pokey" Reddick has the record for most games played by a goalie without a single shutout.
Yeah, Winnipeg born and raised. We've had to endure the entirety of our franchise with noticeably sub-par goaltending. I still remember going to games as a kid watching "Pokey and the Bandit" (Reddick/Daniel Berthiaume) stink up the position before the likes of Bob Essensa,Nikolai Khabibulin etc etc added their own persistently weak performances. So after Pavlov and Mason being pretty disappointing, this year has really been a treat. I don't think anyone in the city or NHL expected Hellebuyck to come back this year as the number 1 but for the first time in franchise history, I'd say we FINALLY have a playoff contending team. And furthermore, we've got a ton of firepower coming up through the ranks to make us solid for years to come.
I used to live in Dauphin and have traveled Friendly MB extensively. Always nice to meet another Bison! I remember those Essensa years well. Bulin was great in 96 and helped the Jets push their final season just a little longer thanks to his goaltending. It's nice for you guys to have Hellebuyck playing so well. Goaltending was the only puzzle piece missing in Winnipeg. They have a great team now because of his work. Thanks for watching, Richard.
You could create a top 10 just for the Habs team...! There were so many great goalies: Price has passed Roy on victories... Of course, Roy, Dryden, Vezina, Worsley and the list goes on... That was probably the team you had the hardest time picking one up...
dude -what did ed belfour do for chicago in the 90's? 30 SO -195 wins-then in dallas he got 35 SO in 5 seasons-the man was solid for every team he played with--im not a chicago fan either, just commented that you forgot him-good ole Canadian boy that was one of the best.
No question, Tony O gets the nod in Chicago. In Dallas, I thought he would be the guy, but after looking at the numbers (both individually and team) I really had to go with Turco. It's too bad because Eddie is great and he just got edged out a bit in both cities where he had a major impact. I could never forget him though. I've been to his home town in Carmen, MB many times. Thanks for watching.
yes some of these felt kinda obvious like roy for colorado and montreal or luelongo ( i know i didn't spell it right but it tried) and when i saw that some of these were going to be recent or newer goalies i got kinda scared for a minute on who you were going to pick for my red wings, cause i like howard and he is better than most give him credit for but thank you for going with ozzie, that was the right choice since you had the time restriction of after 1967 which is fair, but i like that a couple of these goalies also played for my wings as well, cujo and hasek, and yet no love for vernon or legace
A lot of people thought I should have picked Hasek for Detroit. Although his success there is unquestioned, he only played 2.5 yrs there. Osgood was the staple for the Wings for over a decade. While Cujo, Vernon and Manny had their moments, they were too brief to be considered. Thanks for watching and commenting, Drew.
Bobby Hull's No. 1: His slap shot was 118.3 mph; his wrist shot was 106 mph; and his backhand shot was 97 mph (faster than most NHL players' slap shot TODAY). Radar wasn't all that inaccurate back then. And remember, energy goes up as the square of puck speed, so a 118.3 mph shot is exactly 40% more powerful than a 100.0 mph one. Long live Bobby Hull!
Just to be sure, I asked world renown NHL Trivia Expect Liam Maguire about your story. He says it never happened. Bobby Hull never had a backhand measure 97 mph. It's impossible. Hull's reported 118mph slap shot was recorded, as I said in the video, but Mr. Maguire agrees that measuring tools just weren't reliable in the 60s and 70s so it can never really be known how hard Bobby Hull fired his legendary shot. No question it was the hardest of his day and that's for sure. Thanks for watching, Will.
Well, I was a big fan of Bobby Hull when I was young. I went to an all-boys high school, and every other guy in the school hated Hull because of the way I went on about him after every game. him. I remember meeting Bobby Hull at the Kingston Airport as a kid. He was standing next to (then Prime Minister) Pierre Trudeau, who also stuck out his hand to me. "Yeah, yeah, " I said dismissively, "Lemme get back to Bobby." I made a picture of his autograph and didn't wash my right hand for a week. Fortunately, I didn't suffer any broken fingers either. sporttoday.org/21_baf246f20e8c06c4_1.htm You'll notice in the link above that Hull was also the fastest skater of his day @29.7 mph - which is almost as fast as a speed skater on speed skates. His slap shot of 118.3 mph for a 6 oz. (2,625 grain) puck would have had a kinetic energy of 170 foot pounds - almost as much as a 38 special revolver bullet. I notice the guy in the link claims that Hull told him that Paul Henderson had a slap shot of 125 mph, and thus uses it as an excuse to write Hull's stats off. However, it seems Hull may have had some drinking problems after retirement, and the writer doesn't mention how old Hull was when/if he said it. Perhaps, even IF Hull said such a thing, it might have been bar banter after everyone had a few.
I have also enjoyed the pleasure of meeting both Bobby and Denis Hull in the past. Both are great characters! Funny as heck! Bobby was as strong and as fast as a bull. He would thrive in today's NHL. In fact, I have a list of players, from the past, who I believe would still be superstars in today's game. I'm doing a video on it and I hope you'll watch it when it comes out. Thanks for watching and commenting, Bill.
I'm just curious did u actually watch Dryden, Smith, Cheevers & Fuhr play? Or did u just make a list based on teams all-time goalie stats? Ur opinion is ur own, but if ur gonna make a expansion best goalie list, make sure it's really 1967 & not 1980 expansion. I guess u totally didnt see Edmonton's 1st Cup win of the Isle's in 83-84? Grant Fuhr was incredible. His 1-0 shutout in game one against an equally brilliant Billy Smith, was one of if not the best performances in playoff history! Ur obviously a modern day goalie fan , & that's fine. Just cant believe u underplayed, Dryden, Smith, & Fuhr's credibility to thier championship teams.
I was not alive during Dryden's or Cheever's days. I was just a baby for Fuhr and Smith. Given that info, I have little choice to evaluate these player from anything other than their stats relative to their contemporaries. I'm not so short sighted or foolish enough to look at Smith's GAA over 3 and say he's no good on that alone. No, I compare their stats. You provided an example of one game where Smith and Fuhr played great. Brian Boucher had a great week and a half once too, but his comparative numbers don't relate well to his peers at the time. You must have missed that I included Tony O, mentioned Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall and Normie Smith, proving I do understand NHL history and recognize it. I just don't always subscribe to popular believe. I create my own opinions based on my own research. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Dubnyk ranks behind Backstrom in nearly every MN Wild category. Perhaps in a few years this will change, but for now, Backstrom is still #1. Thanks for commenting and watching.
It was a close call. Both took their teams to the conference finals twice. Both pulled their teams out of the gutter. So it came down to wins. Cujo had 133 wins in 249 games. Felix the Cat had 116 wins in 257 games (used his 4 best seasons to make it even). Thanks for watching and commenting Fozzy.
I feel like Osgood doesn't get enough credit. His regular seasons were only okay, but his playoff numbers were pretty good, especially in years they made a cup appearance. in each of the years they made a finals appearance, he stole at least one series. Just my opinion, though. Good video.
Glad you liked the video, Tommy. Ossy was a good goalie that was clearly insulated with the help of a HOF lineup around him. When he was in St. Louis or NYI, he never had the same success he did in Detroit because he didn't have the exceptional talent around him. Good goalie, just not a HOFer and I think that's the way he should be viewed. Thanks for commenting and watching.
@@TopCornerHockey The amount of disrespect for Osgood is sickening. A "good goalie on a great team". Just gonna act like Roy, Brodeur or Hasek played on teams full of scrubs and Osgood had it easy. Osgood put up winning records with the Islanders and Blues, it's the team that ultimately succeeds, it doesn't fall solely on the goaltender. Osgood's regular season and playoffs GAA and SV% is right up there with the other three along with his win % as well. And it's not like he's dead last out of the four. You just hate him because he was quiet, not flashy and outspoken like the other big name tenders of his era. For just a "good goalie" he sure stood on his head posting a GAA of 1.55 and 2.01 in the 08 and 09 playoffs respectively. SV% of .930 and .926. Pretty damn good for an AvErAgE gOaLiE in his mid 30's with a pretty well aged group playing in front of him. Hasek couldn't get it done in '08, but Ozzie did. Do you really believe Ty Conklin would have gotten the Wings to a Game 7, let alone to the Finals, with that roster in front of him that Osgood had? Hell no. Hasek only won his cups because of the ridiculously stacked Wings roster in 01-02 and Osgood in 2008. But keep on hating bud.
^5 TCP good idea and well narrated.Frederick Anderson would be my choice not to throw any shade on Cujo.Glad I subbed your site...…………………………...Peace,be still.
I think your list is slanted to more recent years. Quick over Vachon, for instance ? Roy over Dryden for Habs ? Numbers don't tell the whole story: Gilles Meloche was an amazing netminder for awful, awful teams. Given what I said, the potential is there to list Greg Millen as a better netminder than Glenn Hall for the Blues....just sayin'. Not everything is qualitative in stats....
I love the choice for Boston! sure Thomas was great but he was short lived while Tuukka has been in the league for almost a decade now putting up fantastic numbers! Not only does he have the highest save percentage in the teams history but Rask has the highest save percentage in NHL history when it comes to goalies who have played more than 250 games! And could possibly win a cup this year with Boston making him easily the greatest Bruins goalie ever in my opinion!
THANK YOU! A lot of people tell me Thomas should have been my pick here, but his time was too short. He was great for 3-4 years, but that's not enough time - in my opinion - to be called the Best since 67. Thank you for understanding my point.
I think an interesting idea for a video but I don’t know how difficult it might be to research and actually make a video of it would be best post career accomplishments who’s done the worst used on the best who’s done the most unusual post career things in their life love your videos thanks so much
TopCornerHockey If I find anything on usual should I post it here or email it to you how would I get that info to you I consider writing a book about this year’s ago
Pierre Lacroix didn't rob Réjean Houle. Patrick wanted to leave the Habs (due to a stupid decision made by a stupid coach during a bad game), and Houle had no choice to trade him quick.
Roy was under contract, what was he doing to do, not play until his contract was up and he became a FA? Mtl staff held all the cards. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Francois Bougé yes and no. He means that because Kovalenko whatever other players the habs got didn’t meant shit compared to Roy equaling 2 cups with Colorado.
No way Roy is the best Habs goalie since 1967. Ken Dryden did everything Roy did AND MORE in less time. He won his first Stanley Cup (1971) on an underdog team, he won the Conn Smythe before he won rookie of the year (only player to ever achieve that), he won 5 Vezina trophies, 6 Stanley Cups, and he did all that in only 9 seasons. Dryden had almost as many shutouts (46) as he did career losses (57). Roy achieved far less in his ten seasons as a Hab, and I won't even get into his crappy "me first" attitude which led to him being traded. Even if you never saw Dryden play (I was lucky enough to have done so) the stats alone say he's better.
Would you also say Roy had just as good of a lineup in front of him as Dryden did in the 70's? The tough part about comparing players from different eras is not only the way the game changes from decade to decade but also the players they have in front of them. If you're a Hand fan you probably already know how many hall of famers played in front of Roy vs those who played with Dryden. Plus the Habs would have won many of those cups with an average goalie in net. The two cups Roy won in Montreal would not have been won without his brilliant performances. And Roy also won a Conn Smythe before he was a rookie.
Hard to argue that. 205th overall. 21 goalies drafted ahead of The King in 2000. Ilya Bryzgalov the second most successful goalie taken that year was taken 44th overall. Crazy. Thanks for watching.
You never look at any Stanley Cup winner without first evaluating the goalie and Osgood was there for 3 Cups, so he certainly provided all the goaltending those great Wings teams needed. Nevertheless, I would not say Osgood is among the Top 50 greatest goalies of all time despite his Cups and 401 wins. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Also since the lockout Lundqvist has only failed to take his Rangers to the playoffs only once. Before that the team hadn't made it once in like 5-7 years. Ridiculous impact by one player.
You're right. Lost in the shoot out to Brian Boucher on the last day of the 2010 regular season. Although it looks like NYR will miss again in 2018. Still, a fabulous career by Lundqvist. HOF for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting, Kim.
TopCornerHockey #StPatrick almost got himself an assist,, on his #Spinerama lol. HILARIOUS!! He had an argument with his #goalposts after 2!! In #French !! #33😉😉😉😉
Damn, I keep wondering what couldve been if Kari Lehtonen didnt have that injury record. Doesnt change the facts but still he is one the THE most underrated players the game has ever seen. In my opinion of course.
Richter was so good, for so long, but everything he did for the franchise (except a Stanley Cup) has been passed by Lundqvist. The gap is just too big between them now. But, like you, I have great memories of watching Richter make many incredible saves. Thanks for watching Hacker Jones.
I thought VGK were nuts to let Pickard go so they could get Subban. But he looked great in Vegas after failing in Boston. Too bad he's hurt now. Vegas is using 3rd and 4th string goalies now. That's rough for any team but especially an expansion one. Thanks for watching, Zach.
While I agree with Roberto Luongo's selection in Vancouver, King Richard (Brodeur) deserves mention. He put the team on his back in 1982's run. Too bad the numbers in the '80's made every goalie from that era look mediocre. Great list anyways!
I think the only team I gave an honourable mention too was McLean in Van. I did that because a good friend of mine grew up a huge Kirk McLean fan, so I tossed that in for him. Usually I don't do honourable mentions. You're right about 80s goalie stats. They're not even worth mentioning because people who didn't watch 80s hockey wouldn't get why having a 3.10 GAA was once considered good haha! Thanks for watching and commenting, Alan.
All his franchise achievements have been passed by Lundqvist. Mike Richter was awesome, but Lundqvist is just that much better. Thanks for watching and commenting, Brian.
I feel that you over empathize numbers in GAA and wins, which are more of a testament to the team's performance. One example would be Pavalec who had not many wins, but during that time he would face many many shots often at high quality scoring opportunities per game.
I don't know if you can over emphasize wins. That's the most important stat. There are some examples where it's quite misleading such as Ken Dryden having so many in so little time is absolutely due to his team more than his talent. It goes the other way, too. Roberto Luongo faced the most shots in NHL history in 03-04, had a fantastic save percentage, but only 25 wins because the Panthers sucks. I take all those things into consideration during my evaluation. Thanks for watching and commenting, Jonathan.
TopCornerHockey by that logic one could argue luongo was a bad goalie for the panthers because he lost many games. When in actuality it was stellar play. Wins is a team stat in my opinion
My reasoning says Lu ate a lot of rubber and stopped most of it, but because his team couldn't score, they didn't win. Wins are a team stat, but goalies are the only member of the team measured in wins, therefore it's integral to their evaluation. Thanks for watching.
Anyone else think that it's sad that a long and storied franchise like Toronto's best goalie is someone who only played for them for four seasons near the end of his career?
I certainly enjoy your videos, but as a St. Louis Blues fan since 1967, I have to take issue with your selection of Mike Liut as the all time best Blues goaltender. Sometimes you have to look past the stats and tenure and examine what the player(s) meant to the team. The duo of Hall/Plante was the absolute best of times for St. Louis goaltending, which admittedly has been sub-par. That duo made games competitive every night rocketed an expansion team to the Stanley Cup playoffs in the early years. The Blues owe much of their early success to the duo, the Blues might not even be in St. Louis has been for Hall/Plante regularly stealing games. There was a lot of talk of moving to Saskatoon!! I'm guessing Samuel Frick from below couldn't be 30 years old....Jake Allen will need to remedy his mid-season win less slumps to be considered as the numero uno Blues goalie. BTW, I have an Elliot signed puck and an autographed photo of a maskless Glen Hall in my office. You can have the Elliot puck, but I'll die before I give up the Glen Hall pic.
I really couldn't pick a duo, Steven. No quesiton though, the Blues early success came from their weaker division and the old timers who stepped up (lead by Hall and Plante). Like I said in the video, the Blues were hard to pick one guy. No one really sticks around long enough. Thanks for commenting and watching.
As I mentioned in the video, Sam, Ottawa had better team success in both the regular season and postseason with Lalime in goal. Although Anderson has passed some of Lalime's franchise marks, it's only by a small margin, so I gave Lalime the nod based on that evidence. Thanks for watching.
The numbers are too far in favour of Turco and Backstrom. Before doing the research though, Belfour and Roloson are the goalies who come to mind for each club. Obviously they performed very well and left an impression. Thanks for watching, Philippe.
Can you do the strongest team? The most psycho 6? The most ruthless? The most annoying.. here Barnaby fits in. Sean Avery :P The most exotic team? The baldest team lol The ballerina team.. smoothest skaters ever.. Maybe you can some of these. Cheers, Peter.
THE BALDEST TEAM! HAHAHA! Lead by Ryan Getzlaf haha! Was Mark Messier bald or did he shave? I'm know he shaved it, but did he do it because he was bald already or was it just because he liked the look? I have done some research on a few of those ideas, but production is still a ways away. Some good suggestions in there, Peter. Thanks for watching.
I might not not agree with some of your choices, but it's an interesting video. I lIke that you picked goalies that spent some time with the team. You're pretty biased against the older guys like Esposito, Liut & Smith (4 Cups, Conn Smythe, Vezina, 1st team all-star, all-star game, Led the league in Wins, Played for Team Canada @ Canada Cup). Here's where I differed. Bos: Thomas> Rask. Thomas won the cup/Conn Smythe, Rask didn't play. Dal: Close one, but I'd take Belfour Edm: Fuhr > Ranford. Not even close Fla: Close one, but Beezer>Luongo (remember that Cup run?) Mon: Dryden>Roy More Cups, more Awards, etc Pitt: Another close on, but Barrasso got 2nd team AS & led league in wins, Fleury didn't. TO: Potvin>Joesph (close) Wsh: After last season, would put Holtby over Kolzig.
I struggled with some of those picks, too, Brad. It's not an easy task and I appreciate you supplying your opinion without lambasting me (haha). I chose those goalies based on two things: individual and team success, with a greater emphasis on individual success. This is why I picked Rask, Ranford, Turco, Lu, Cujo and Kolzig. Their individual numbers were better than Thomas, Fuhr, Belfour, Beezer, Potvin and Holtby. As I said in the video, I was very surprised to find out how much better Ranford was than Fuhr and Turco was than Belfour. Clearly Fuhr and Belfour played on better teams. I'm not a fan of Ken Dryden the goalie. Ken Dryden the author is very good though. Dryden didn't have a long career and he played for arguably the most dominant team in history. Montreal won 6 Stanley Cups in the 70s and won a combined 461 games with a .647 winning percentage! They were unstoppable and Dryden was not the main reason for that. Roy won two Cups, pretty much on his own in Montreal. Roy is universally considered a top 5 goalie of all time. Dryden is not. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Hi Kurt, would love to argue more with you over these. As a hobby, I make all-time teams, so like you, I've done some research too. Here's a suggestion for a video. top 5 players for each franchise.
Let's not call it arguing, Brad. It's debating. Arguing supplies a negative connotation I would like to absent from. But debating, that's fun! I have plans to do an all time top 6 per team (5 skaters and a goalie). Kinda like a starting lineup. I'll get to it eventually, but something like that takes a lot of time both at the research and production phases. Thanks for watching, Brad.
If you asked me that 3 months ago, I think I would have said yes, right now though, Pittsburgh looked gassed and no where near the team that won back to back Cups. I'm not sure, but maybe the Penguins are going into a valley, which would not be good for Murray if he were to ever catch Fleury in franchise wins. Or maybe this is just an off season for the Pens and they'll be back to being Cup contenders next season after a bit or retooling. Thanks for watching.
TopCornerHockey my thought was this season and possibly next season as a penguins fan I don't expect much or terrific seasons unless on this off-season we make good trades or sign 1 or 2 players most likely defensively I'm hoping this is just fatigue from 2 long cup runs and wins in a row
As a big Crosby fan, I hope you're right. It's been a tough year for everyone there. They're 5 on 5 play has been really bad. I never thought Pitt would be in danger of missing the playoffs. I picked them to win the President's Trophy!
TopCornerHockey yea it has been but I almost want them to miss playoffs this year to see how the capitals play without pittsburgh to knock then out second round
I'm just not part of the Ken Dryden fan club. I think he was an ok goalie playing on the greatest team ever. The 1970s Montreal Canadiens were unstoppable. Outside of the 1971 playoffs, I really don't think Dryden played a big role in Montreal's success during the decade. But I appreciate your opinion, Wolf Daddy. Thanks for watching.
why didnt you include the thrashers in with the Jets. they were the jets franchise before they relocated to winnepeg in 2011. if you only consider the 6 years of the jets in winnepeg, then of course its pavelec, but if you consider the entire franchise throughout it's history, then it should be kari lehtonen. Honestly, I think including the thrashers for the jets would be the same as calling the mighty ducks of anaheim as the mighty ducks. solely based on the fact that the modern jets have only been in the league for 6 years. to me, it only makes sense
I chose Rask because he's been consistently good for longer than Thomas was. It's true that Thomas was spectacular for a couple seasons, but Rask has been solid and steady each year. His higher win totals are evidence of this. Thanks for watching and commenting Sonny NE.
Totally agree that Thomas is better than Rask. I get why you'd pick Rask, and with his numbers and (relative) consistency, it makes sense. But Thomas was a two-time Vezina winner to Rask's one, and a Conn Smythe winner in 2011. And I think Thomas's historic run to the Stanley Cup in 2011 alone makes him better than Rask. A lot of people here are pretty quick to get on Rask, and while I definitely think he's great and could surpass Timmy one day, he just isn't at that level right now, and he doesn't perform in the big spots the way Thomas did.
His consistency dying every year. He won SC, but he never win one as starter. Cheevers, Lemelin, Moog, Dafoe, Thomas were better choice forme. I hope for trade to bring consistency to goal.
Washington was a close call. Kolzig currently holds the franchise marks for GP and W. Plus he helped get the Caps to the finals in 98. In 3-5 years, Holtby will almost certainly pass Godzilla. Thanks for commenting and watching, Alli Krug.
To answer the question of most franchise goalies are more resent. Answer , goalie shoulder pads. Huge leg pads , catching gloves and waffles 50 percent bigger. Also better head gear. Esposito , Parent and others from the 70s and early 80s dis you see the size if their equipment? Saves HIT goalies more now.
A quote from bryzgalov: it's only game, why you heff to be mad
Haha, do you follow him on Twitter, Timothy? I don't, but my friend does and Breezy still has some good one liners every now and then. Thanks for watching.
I heard he is not afraid of any player.. Only bear in da forest.
Universe is youmangos big.
My favorite Toronto goaltender
FINALLY!!! somebody showed Cujo some love, thanks for that he was awesome to watch play.
Tim thomas is a dirty player
why?
I'd rank Thomas 3rd behind old-timers Tiny Thompson, & Frank Brimsek. Though long ago, both those guys accomplished much more.
Dyno Hi DynoMike
Yeah, the narrator is an absolute idiot. He doesn't understand that goalies didn't played as much in the 80s as they do now. Smitty was great. One of the best money goalies of all time. And Gretzky said he was the toughest goalie he ever faced.
lol whats wrong with you. you have a different opinion than him so his life is all wrong? lmao pathetic
Love your videos! Cheers and happy christmas from Sweden!
Thanks for watching, Fredrik! Hope you had a fun Christmas.
What opposing tram were the flames playing at 4:05 ? Thought it was the wild at first but I honestly have no clue
Best rookies each nhl draft year
I would like to see a video on this. I love your videos!
Thanks for the suggestion, Battlekidx2. I'll add your idea to my list. Thanks for commenting and watching.
I really enjoyed this Excellent choices for goalies
TopCornerHockey yeah he was really good and made a lot of highlight reel saves and I really enjoyed having him in Dallas for all those seasons.
Sorry, I don't have it. I only have some highlights of that game, not the full thing. Thanks for watching.
That too would be a great idea!
do pairs/combos instead maybe? you already have goalies, no need for repeating that. but do best D pairs, and offensive lines per teams maybe?
In 5-6 years you may have to update this list. I’ll bet Jake Allen will cement himself as the Blues best goalie ever and I think Braden Holtby will slightly surpass Kolzig.
I hope I'll be able to update a lot of my lists in 5-6 years. The game is always changing, new great players come along. This is why we'll be able to talk hockey forever. Thanks for commenting and watching, Samuel.
lets go k's
also I'm pretty sure vasilevskiy will be new leader soon for tampa
Samuel Frick it will be Hutton for the blues in 5 years
Allen is butt cheek in a half
Best undrafted Players After 1967?
That's a good idea, Mika! There are so many to choose from. Three Hall of Famers come to mind right away: Oates, Ciccarelli and Belfour. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Best players turned coach? Being successful in both careers
Nice list, not much to argue about other than Dryden- Roy. FYI, that's not Bill Smith at 12:51, it's Glenn Resch.
I thought Hasek would've been the choice for Detroit as well ha
Brian McDermott as did I
He just didn't play long enough in Detroit, Brian.
Hasek over Osgood for sure. Hasek played long enough for the Wings.
Two and half years is nothing compared to 14 years. We can't be too hasty. Thanks for watching, Digital Nomad Investor.
12:50 lanny scored that goal on Chico resch, not Smith.
Hasek's on this list because he plays real goalie. He has fun with it. He does stacking the pads, windmills, etc.
Love it Kurt!
Thanks! I really enjoy making videos about goalies. Although I never played the position, I really admire their athleticism. Thanks for watching.
On CuJo: If we can compare him to Freddie Andersen, where does Freddie (who wears CuJo's number) sit?
Finland is goalie factory
You're not wrong, Jcheimi! Thanks for watching.
Sweden have been catching up a bit though.
Goalies with at least 20 games so far:
H.Lundqvist (Rangers) *Obviously*
R.Lehner (Sabres)
J.Markström (Canucks)
E.Läck (Flames)
Almost at 20 games:
A.Nilsson (Canucks)
A.Forsberg (Blackhawks)
Finland do have a stronger tradition of goalies in general, but especially goalies who have claimed that first spot and cemented their place in the history for sure for as long as I've lived and been interested in hockey anyway.
I miss Kipper so much. Great video!
Hey, but Mike Smith looks great after 20 something games so far. Better than I thought he would be. That Calgary defense is not what I expected either. Thanks for watching, Chocolate Moose.
TopCornerHockey Agreed! It’s been the opposite as to what was expected at the start of the season. Subpar defense, outstanding goaltending.
Kirk McLean for Vancouver and personally would pick Dryden over Roy
I have a special place for McLean too, that's why I threw him in there. But his numbers are no where near Lu's. I picked Roy because he made Montreal good. Without him, they would be very ordinary. You can't say the same thing for Dryden's Habs. Thanks for watching, Alan.
Give him a few more years and Andrei Vasilievsky will surpass both Khabibulin and Bishop in all categories. He's got plenty of time with that core in place on Tampa Bay.
Wait, is Patrick Roy twice on this list?
Deservedly so. Roy is easily the best for Colorado and I think he's a better goalie than Dryden for Montreal. Dryden played behind one of the best lineups in history. Roy was the Habs best and most reliable player for them during his time in the 80s and 90s. Thanks for watching, Mr. Master-Me.
TopCornerHockey #Oui!! Tu Es Le Meiuller ! Gardien #33 , as a #Hab & #Av !! 1986, 1993StanleyCup, 1996/2001 🏆as an #Av!! Sainte Patrick ✌
If I could respond in french, I would Jaime-Lyn Roy. But by the looks of things, you agree with me. Thanks for watching.
Both Roy and Luongo deserve to be on here twice.
yes he is , and so is luongo.
OMG .. you seriusly did NOT just miss out on The greatest Flyers goalie of all time ...
To be honest I would've put Hextall as the best Flyesrs goalie. Great video non the less.
Hawks - Belfour - and Dallas - Belfour. A Cup and 2 trips to the Finals for Dallas and amazing numbers for Hawks.
You make some great content. I think a Top 10 Goalie Mask video would be cool. Keep up the great work.
That would be cool! Thanks for the idea Hank!
TopCornerHockey well number one would be Bromley or Vanbiesbruk hands down lol
Hank Staley gerry cheevers too but they did that for friday the 13th NHL.com I think
@Hugh Tahoob as a really patriotic guy whose grandfather fought in Vietnam my favorite mask is Rick Dipietro
Hey Hugh, Gilles Gratton had that scary looking Jaguar face mask. Really intimidating stuff. It's in the HOF now. I also really liked Bryan Hayward's Sharks mask with the dripping blood.
I'd consider updating a few teams. Dubnyk in Minnesota & Holtby in Washington
“Ben Bishop is the best goalie in Tampa Bay.”
*Laughs in Andrei Vasilevskey*
That is an interesting fact. You know your history and more especially your Jets history. Are you from Manitoba? Thanks for watching, Stephen Hill.
Fortunately, I didn't suffer any broken fingers either.
sporttoday.org/21_baf246f20e8c06c4_1.htm
You'll notice in the link above that Hull was also the fastest skater of his day @29.7 mph - which is almost as fast as a speed skater on speed skates.
You should do a list per team up to 1992 season (when there started to be many new teams).
What about dubnyk???
Dubnyk ranks behind Backstrom in nearly every MN Wild category. Perhaps in a few years this will change, but for now, Backstrom is still #1. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Niklas Backstöm, used to be a great goalie. Now hes a backup in Finnish elite league...
That's sad to hear. But he's gotta be 40 now. He certainly had an excellent 6-7 years there in Minny. Thanks for watching, pippelilaatikko.
It's very close between Cujo and Felix the cat. I think Cujo has the edge though.
I think an interesting idea for a video but I don’t know how difficult it might be to research and actually make a video of it would be best post career accomplishments who’s done the worst used on the best who’s done the most unusual post career things in their life love your videos thanks so much
Ronald Hanlon interesting idea! I'll see what I can do. Thanks so much for watching!
TopCornerHockey If I find anything on usual should I post it here or email it to you how would I get that info to you I consider writing a book about this year’s ago
This guy is one of my favorite Hockey commentators! REAL DUDE ahahah!!!!
Thank you very much, Josh. That's very kind of you. I appreciate that. Thanks for watching.
Binnington is now #1 for St.Louis
Thanks Lucas the destroyer 420😂
Hextall Philly, Belfour Chicago, and Billy Smith 100% deserves to be in the HOF.
I think Henrik Lundqvist was the greatest draft steal ever!!!!!
Hard to argue that. 205th overall. 21 goalies drafted ahead of The King in 2000. Ilya Bryzgalov the second most successful goalie taken that year was taken 44th overall. Crazy. Thanks for watching.
The first player I always look at when cheering for a team is the goalie.
The Dominator is also Detroits best goalie ever.. in terms of games played and hardware I can agree on Osgood.
Hasek played so little in Detroit, I didn't think I should use him. Thanks for watching.
Osgood may have been average stats wide but he was solid and clutch when he had to be
You never look at any Stanley Cup winner without first evaluating the goalie and Osgood was there for 3 Cups, so he certainly provided all the goaltending those great Wings teams needed. Nevertheless, I would not say Osgood is among the Top 50 greatest goalies of all time despite his Cups and 401 wins. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Do the last ever goals for the franchises that aren’t here anymore
That might take some real digging, but I'm up for the challenge. Thanks for the suggestion, Blake.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Kim.
where's Roy spinerama around "The great one"
Hahaha! Great move. And 99 complaining right after it! Good call, Lukas. Thanks for watching.
Lukas Kompan lmao!! Crossing Centre!! #ClassicROY
Can you do one about overrated and underrated players?
Great ideas, Alex! I'll put them on my list. Thanks for watching!
Rask was not in net for 2011 bro, Thomas (who you mentioned) was in net.
Not like Richter for NYR?
Richter was so good, for so long, but everything he did for the franchise (except a Stanley Cup) has been passed by Lundqvist. The gap is just too big between them now. But, like you, I have great memories of watching Richter make many incredible saves. Thanks for watching Hacker Jones.
No Vegas Golden Knights legend Malcom Subban? He's undrafted in their franchise history. I kid of course.
Yeah, but Kirk McClean is good choice too, he was remarkable in C run in 1994.
Kirk McLean > Luongo
Richter for the Rangers?
That was too much love for Patrick Roy!
What about Johnny Bower
Johnny only played 64 games after the great expansion of 67. That's not enough. Thanks for watching.
Oh wow... you replied. Never even noticed xD
And I think he also played before 1967
Most of Bower's time was done pre expansion.
Buddy Craig Anderson is better in save percentage and win percentage so idk why you didn't put him in?
As I mentioned in the video, Sam, Ottawa had better team success in both the regular season and postseason with Lalime in goal. Although Anderson has passed some of Lalime's franchise marks, it's only by a small margin, so I gave Lalime the nod based on that evidence. Thanks for watching.
I would've picked Belfour and Roloson for the Stars and the Wild respectively though
The numbers are too far in favour of Turco and Backstrom. Before doing the research though, Belfour and Roloson are the goalies who come to mind for each club. Obviously they performed very well and left an impression. Thanks for watching, Philippe.
TopCornerHockey Well I guess the numbers can't lie. Still, this is quite surprising.
Can you do the strongest team?
The most psycho 6?
The most ruthless?
The most annoying.. here Barnaby fits in. Sean Avery :P
The most exotic team?
The baldest team lol
The ballerina team.. smoothest skaters ever..
Maybe you can some of these.
Cheers,
Peter.
Dal: Close one, but I'd take Belfour
Edm: Fuhr > Ranford. Not even close
Fla: Close one, but Beezer>Luongo (remember that Cup run?)
Mon: Dryden>Roy More Cups, more Awards, etc
Pitt: Another close on, but Barrasso got 2nd team AS & led league in wins, Fleury didn't.
TO: Potvin>Joesph (close)
Wsh: After last season, would put Holtby over Kolzig.
Let’s go kipper
As a Flames fan, you must miss those days. Calgary hasn't had a superstar goalie since. Thanks for watching.
What about Mike Vernon who won a cup with them
Do you think Murray will surpass Flower in his career and hold the title of franchise best goalie
TopCornerHockey I think we will be back to knocking off capitals in the second round in a year or 2
As a big Crosby fan, I hope you're right.
You should have picked Dryden and Cheevers.
Billy Smith Islanders. Ed Giacomin Rangers Marc Andre Fleury Penguins I do not carw what you think. Sean Burke Whalers
Still think that Ken Dryden is the best Montreal goalie since 1967. He won 6 Cups in 8 years (1 of which he took off)
I'm just not part of the Ken Dryden fan club.
Patrick Lalime was good, but Anderson proved to be more consistent on lesser Senator teams.
You really don’t like Billy Smith that much I can tell
Tim Thomas > Tuukka Rask
#1 goalie is Braden Holtby
Washington was a close call. Kolzig currently holds the franchise marks for GP and W. Plus he helped get the Caps to the finals in 98. In 3-5 years, Holtby will almost certainly pass Godzilla. Thanks for commenting and watching, Alli Krug.
Vegas?
Love how bobby Lou is for two different teams
He deserves to be. Thanks for watching.
Conner hellabuck is going to be the Jets best goalie
I watched up until I saw your choice for Detroit and then I knew I was getting trolled.
i think price shoudda been for mtl
Although Price will pass Roy in wins very soon, he hasn't captured the Vezina's and Cups Roy did in Montreal. Thanks for watching, Theo.
Theo LeBlanc why? Patrick won 2 cups. I know he had an all star team but price hasn’t won shit. In the nhl.
