It's STUPID loud in the room the cab is in, even with the isobox closed up. You can hit the origin with nearly any kind of drive and it just sounds amazing. I have a Nu-X Morningstar (bluesbreaker type drive, and a more or less copy of the JHS Morning Glory)... for lower gain drives, this is a great combo. I also have a RockReady Brit Crunch on my board for higher gain drive, this pedal is sort of a poor-man's Marshall Guv'nor, and it just makes the Origin SCREAM JCM800 tones. I think my Origin is my favorite amp I have ever owned. Great clean tones from it, too.
I got one of these, and a 2x12 slant origin cab. I'm quite happy with it, especially at the price. It does feel a little cheap in the materials(knobs/switches, handle, etc) but they look great and work well. It took me a while to find some pleasant tones, other than clean. The low setting is still quite loud too. I also have a Marshall Custom shop JCM-1 watt mini stack, and it will give a much nicer sound at almost any setting but lacks clean headroom at louder than bedroom levels. It took me a while to even realize it had the pull out gain knob. I also turn the treble to 1-2, and that helps alot.
I love this amp all you need is a pedal for some OD and you are good to go from classic crunch to 80's riffage. I run my sonicake multi fx in front of the amp with cab sims off and it sounds amazing !
These are my favorite sounding amps of all lower cost amps. I will say that for my taste, having the master cranked is what really takes these amps to another level, but it’s all subjective. I always have the master dimed on Origin 20, and then turn the gain to taste. Some techs out there don’t like that these claim to be like a “plexi”, since the circuitry isn’t anywhere near those old school Marshalls. I personally don’t care how the sound is generated, only about how it sounds. And it does sound like 80% like a plexi era Marshall to me. I don’t use gain pedals at all, but if that’s your thing the Origins take pedals really well. Just a really awesome amp for the money. And there are great mods you can do to them to take it to another level.
It’s a great amp. I have a 20 myself and I’m really happy with the tone I get out of it. It has a fantastic clean Marshall sound and takes pedals REALLY well. If I relied on amp distortion then I would probably be disappointed, but I don’t and pedals seem to really sing with the amp.
Have you ever owned or do you own an amp that you like the way the amp itself sounds ? In other words, innthis scenario, you aren't immediately looking for something to change or improve the amp.
Hmmm. No. Well. Prefer my amp to be clean. So I usually decided on the clean tone. But I’ve always been a pedal player. I like a clean pedal platform amp set to just before the edge of break up and I go from there. Similar to how Gilmour does things. I grew up with Fender amps and I’ve never been a fan of their amp distortion so that probably has something to do with it. I tend to cover a lot of sonic ground and need a lot of options for distortion. So it works for me.
Thanks,..I was just curious. It seems most players are never satisfied with the sound of their amp. Even the few that claim to like their amp sound are never content without having pedal(s). Just got one myself amd for the price they sound great. Like how you get differences in sound from the power choices so it gives more flexibility in recording when you want a slightly different response. @@ロクアンドロルしかない DO MORE RESEARCH. While what you said is true for most tube amps, it is not the case for these Origin amps. There is a dummy load built in that only works with NOTHING plugged into the speaker outputs. If you use the DI, the scenario you described will only happen if you have a speaker cable plugged into nothing.
Plexi has kind of become the go to word for vintage Marshall tone. They call it Plexi because the old Marshall's had a plexiglass face panel.then the went to the gold metal panels. So that's where Plexi comes from. Now it's become a term to describe that sound of the early Marshalls
I don't know how people get caught out so easily and unfortunately end up being stuck with their new purchases, however, between the two amps, the Marshall studio classic is the one, THEN you will be cooking. 😁👍
It does a good PLEXI sound...Sounds closer to Plexi than a JCM 800... This is better for 70s tones and beats an 800 for Classic AC/DC, Zeppelin Thin Lizzy Purple.. 800 wins the 80s Marshall tones..
The best amp ever made is a stretch. It's very fizzy. Try a 1974x... Bone stock It's rock and roll. That's a decent cheap amp but you should rethink your description.
The fact that you are happy with this amp is great and all that really matters. I have however, being an old sod, have grown up with JTM45 and 100watt Plexi amps. There is little comparison honestly. I purchased one of these and found it one dimensional in terms of how one ideally uses a Marshall in the old school sense. Meaning major adjustment to volume and tone done from the guitar to dynamically arrive a palette of sounds. Perhaps ultimately the point is stage conditions being what they are today old school is next to impossible. I tried working with this extensively to get a Plexi like sound and behavior and resorted to a Kemper with legit sounding JTM45 profiles. Great that it works for you and your enthusiasm is really all that matters
this amp behaves NOTHING like my JTM45 but it def has its place. are you not playing w your knobs on your gtr anyway tho? or do you just set it and forget it? 10 or nothing? thats also very cool and fun to do, but as far as delivering classic marshall sounds, i feel the origin 20 gets much closer than the kemper. roll that treble knob OFF and use the tilt knob to dial in the angus tone!!!!! \m/ \m/
I will respectfully disagree. I've been playing since the late 60s, and have owned a couple of 1959 Superleads as well as a JTM45 combo. The Origin gets very close to my ears, for a lot less money and weight. The 20C is my main gigging amp now. Nothing else comes this close other than the originals and I sold them long ago in favor of smaller amps.
@@jonwanrocks - actually my main beef with the Origin is precisely the inability to roll off the volume and tone on a Les Paul and achieve the same behaviour as a JTM45. I can by contrast accomplish that with a Kemper. I can run my HW Bluesbreaker and the Kemper side by side and get remarkably close. In the case of the Origin 20C I have even replaced the speaker with a 12” and while I can achieve reasonably good tone with the amp, it is not dynamic in the same way as the JTM45.
@@slimturnpike - Great that you are happy with it. Obviously it’s a much more convenient choice if it works for you. While I am ok with it to a limited extent, I can’t compare it to my Bluesbreaker. Inspite of it being much heavier and a pain to move around comparatively, I would still use it with a Fryette to manage the volume as the clean headroom and dynamic range is noticeably far better. Again that you are happy with the 20C and are able to get what you need out of it is great.
Glad you're happy. It's ok. It's not all that. You will be even more happy when you play a DSL-20. Or a Plexi. Or a JCM-800. Side by side there's no comparison. The build quality alone makes them better. Although it's a great "beater" for the road to save wear and tear on prized/more expensive amps or if you are the player, the roadie, the driver, family man, etc., not making 6 or 7 figures a year and can't justify a more costly amp like many of us. Used to be a strictly Plexi guy but the DSL's cover that and all the way to JTM800 & 900 tones. The most versatile I think. The DSL-40 combo is the de facto rock workhorse for a club musician imho. I do favor a 20watt DSL head and 1x12" or two 1x12" orange cabs depending on venue size.
I own about 15 vintage Marshalls and I hated the DSL out of all of them! There's a reason why DSL's are so cheap! IMO the Origin 50 & 20 both sound better than any of the DSL's. But I don't like the modern Marshall vibe which the DSL has and the Origins do not.
go ahead and pay triple the amount and think you are getting better. I have a JMP marshall and an original '87 Jubilee. I'll sell you the Jube stack for $9500.. These little O20's kick ass for a very very reasonable price.
@@kennyh5083 Same here, I really hate DSLs. A couple of the clubs where my band plays have them in the backline and for me at least they sound horrible. My Origin 20C kicks the DSL40's ass, tonewise and is pretty much the same volume.
As hated as they are, even a DSL15 can get you decently far. Swap the V1 tube with an ECC823 to lower the gain of the high output channel, swap the speaker, and you've got yourself a workhorse.
I did give you a thumbs up because I did enjoy your playing, you are a good guitar player and you did get a good tone of that amp, just unfortunately for me, I found my origin 20 to be a little lacking.

@@stevencancel1727 Maybe the 50 watters are just better. Personally, my old O20 just didn't compare to my Ceriatone JTM45. Maybe to your ears, you'd hear them very similarly, but placebo or not, I heard a decently drastic difference.

I found it to have a fairly nice clean tone but the drive channels were extremely lacking, terrible gain stage and The effects loop on this head also produced a terrible tone, unlike any of the other Marshall’s I own.
I have been gigging a pair of 1979 Marshall 50w master volume mk2 combos since 1980 without even a hiccup as to their reliability, buy good in the first place and you wouldn't need to look elsewhere, as for owning 30 amps or whatever, we can usually only play amps one at a time, must be difficult having to purchase lots of different amps and still not finding your sound.

You’d def love it ! I’ve played the 50 and it does rock !
I thought at the beginning of the video, when it was just starting to break up,it sounded really chimey. It reminded me a lot of The Who,particularly when he was using a blonde bassman head and the Marshall cabs.If you listen to the first album you might see what I mean.It would be even closer with a Rickenbacker.I’ve always loved that sound.
What Cab are you using ? Or what speakers are in them ? I have the same amp aswell and same guitar but I never got the same sound hahah, sounds killer man !
Thanks for the kind words friend !
I basically have 2 16ohm Marshall G12Hs and 2 16ohm Celestine v30s x formation wired up in the cab !
It’s even just a smaller Marshall MG series cab loaded with those - haha saves lots of stage space but if I need to I have the bottom cab loaded as well for more on those bigger stages
Got one when it was still 399 and love it
so u can use the marshall flat out without speaker plugged in for the DI?
No you cannot, TUBE AMPS ALWAYS NEED A SPEAKER OR RESISTANCE LOAD ATTACHED, otherwise you will set it on fire.
Great playing!!
Great rundown, thanks Justin
i love this amp, but i'll never understand why people use "plexi" to describe the sound
Plexi has kind of become the go to word for vintage Marshall tone. They call it Plexi because the old Marshall's had a plexiglass face panel.then the went to the gold metal panels. So that's where Plexi comes from. Now it's become a term to describe that sound of the early Marshalls
Great review. Nice amp
Sounds great! Awesome playing! What's the name of your band?
Thanks so much Dennis !!!
The band is just My Name - got a stacked calendar of shows this year ! Hopefully I’ll be out your way ! Come jam 🤘🏻⚡️🤘🏻

Love these amps also. love the prs as well. Good combination between the two.
I also throughly enjoy my tele thru it as well !!
What venues would employ this
Sounds great!
Oh you sweet summer child, if you're ever fortunate to live enough to play a 70s JMP or Superlead you may seriously rethink this
but how reliable is it?
@@hustlinc3540 still in the trailer rn never had a failure
Love it probably getting the 50 watt combo so ^_^
Good tone med rock acdc, Zeppelin, but not enough gain for Panama.
I don't know how people get caught out so easily and unfortunately end up being stuck with their new purchases, however, between the two amps, the Marshall studio classic is the one, THEN you will be cooking. 😁👍
sick dude
Great amp , most haters here play in a bedroom with 3000 bucks stuff. Money dont make great players, hability is needed.
I never use the gain boost, it's useless. I just use a pedal for added gain.
Me too. It is just a bit too much
@@DBMorris It's a wild boost for sure. I do use it, run it at noon all the time.
@@slimturnpike I can see using it as an always on deal for sure
ECC83 == 12AX7
Exactly, had all and have all this will tour 50 origin
As hated as they are, even a DSL15 can get you decently far. Swap the V1 tube with an ECC823 to lower the gain of the high output channel, swap the speaker, and you've got yourself a workhorse.
I did give you a thumbs up because I did enjoy your playing, you are a good guitar player and you did get a good tone of that amp, just unfortunately for me, I found my origin 20 to be a little lacking.
Hey man I appreciate the kind words, and I’m sorry to hear that, but I understand this is a personal taste video more than a fact based looking back
But I also don’t wanna change the title 😆 but fr fr I do appreciate the kindness. I would say the amp actually does great set more clean and taking dirt pedals in front
I also have the presence down to 9 o clock and 10 o clock most of the time believe it or not how adays and it seems to really beef up and tighten the bottom
What was it lacking for you?
I'm just curious....
Love it
And what amps have you played to come to this conclusion. Maybe " best amp ever made for you" would be a better statement.
He said that in the video.
@@waylong25 dummy didn’t even watch it 😂
Buddy I own and play a 1987 Silver Jubilee 50 watt 1972 100 watt 1976 100 watt 2 1979 100 watt 2203/1959
2 1977 50 watt 4 holers and the King a 1979 2204
My 50 watt Origin with blues driver and old black backs and greenbacks will walk with any of these, honestly I was Quite surprised
@@stevencancel1727 Maybe the 50 watters are just better. Personally, my old O20 just didn't compare to my Ceriatone JTM45. Maybe to your ears, you'd hear them very similarly, but placebo or not, I heard a decently drastic difference.
@@watersnortmoment3734I'd hope so, the Ceriatone costs 4x as much as an Origin.
liked your video thanks
Thank you 🙏
From the thumbnail i thought this was a parody video about youtube gear demoers.... is that a word?
I am extremely happy that you like this amp ….I actually have it right now, bought it two days ago, it’s already back in the box ready to get sent back for a refund, number one I have over 20 Amplifiers including 4 Marshall’s …JCM 800, DSL 100HR, Code 100H and MG100HF, three EVH with matching cabinets, 3 orange, 120w Crush and rockverb with matching 412 cab, Orange Dark Terror, boss, fender, Peavey 6505+, Fender Deluxe Reverb, Line 6 , 2 BLACKSTARS, HeadRush gig board which is a FRFR amp sim, Yamaha THR30 White, Positive Grid Spark, Bluguitar Amp 1 Iridium 100w just to name a few, and until I bought this Origine 20, I thought the MG was the one of the worst amps I ever played through…. not sure what you’ve played through in your guitar career, I’m 59 and a half years old and have been playing the guitar since I was 11 and this origin 20 was definitely a disappointment in my opinion, I am very glad that you find it appealing, one thing I don’t understand is being a tube amp, why it doesn’t even have a standby switch, just makes you wonder how long of a life you’ll get out of those powered tubes but that’s another subject entirely. I found it to have a fairly nice clean tone but the drive channels were extremely lacking, terrible gain stage and The effects loop on this head also produced a terrible tone, unlike any of the other Marshall’s I own.
The Marshall studio classic is the one 🙂👍
nobody cares how much gear you have
I have been gigging a pair of 1979 Marshall 50w master volume mk2 combos since 1980 without even a hiccup as to their reliability, buy good in the first place and you wouldn't need to look elsewhere, as for owning 30 amps or whatever, we can usually only play amps one at a time, must be difficult having to purchase lots of different amps and still not finding your sound.
@@Wooburnmusic Me too. I'm 60 and still have the same 50w Marshall head and cabinet I bought used when I was 18. Haven't been interested in any other amps but Marshall ever since.
@@johnmarshall3903 hi there John, it seems that you and me are the only sensible guys here lol ! You and me found magic and stayed with it, best wishes to you 🙂👍
It is not the best amp ever made...c'mon man...it's just a good amp for the price and for that...thanks Marshall
Lol we each live our own truths, good luck in yours …
For me, it's the Mesa mini Rectifier head and its cab 🔥🔥😎
Marshall Origin is The best Amp :) !!!
JUSTIN THERE IS FULL OF HATERS KEEP GOING ORIGIN 20 OR 50 ARE MEDIUM GOOD AMPS.
I made the mistake of buying one. Worst Marshall, worst tube amp I've ever owned.
These are very nice sounding amps but they are not the greatest amp . ever built
Great amp for bedroom rock stars.
Lol funny how it’s been on the road for a year and a half now and kicking ass
It's actually a pretty terrible amp for bedroom use, unless you also have an attenuator. It's simply too loud to be usable in a bedroom setting.
Wait til you have to put it in the shop for repairs. All modern Marshalls are made poorly just like modern Fenders. Take it from an amp tech.
You got that right, I have my DSL 100 in the shop right now because the bias Seems to be all over the place, literally burning the paint off the two inside tubes
@@josephreynolds4899 Smokin'!!!!
My amp tech fixes these with ease and reasonable
You probably just work on hand wired stuff
Agreed the build quality is for assembly speed and profit margin
But average 70's jmp and the like are approaching 3500.00
And lose extensive value with replacement tranny's these are pretty consistent tonewise and I am quite positive in a blind test you could not tell which amp is original vintage or the 50 origin
Quite positive!!
@@stevencancel1727 I played through an Origin recently and it actually sounded awful. I couldn’t get a good tone out of it. Even the guys at Guitar Center commented that it sounded like shit.
@@Earlvis that is not good, not sure what the problem was, maybe it's just not for you
I have had excellent results, with both my favorite boost pedal and vintage speakers, it's an absolute winner that origin 50!!

@@JustinTaylorMD He's calling you inexperienced. I'm not passing judgment, just translating. ✌️
Not so fast there, he may be on to something
Maybe you should go to his show and listen to the tone for yourself
@@JustinTaylorMD No not an insult at all. I too luv the Origin 20 and have one, owned some 30+ Marshall amps! But to say its the best Marshall ever made means you don't know whats what when it comes to Marshall amps! The Vintage Modern eats the Origin amps for a snack in every way! even the 50 Origin! BUT that said it also is also way too big and powerful (I've had one) so I had to let it go for practical reasons also! And there certainly are many others that outdo the Origins but again they are 3-4 times the price! Yea I'm 68 yrs old and still have some 50+ vintage 50s-60's-70's tube amps! (selling them off as we speak) I know amps! and like I said I own the Origin 20 also had a 50 also but again it was way too big! I luv the 20, but to say its the best Marshall ever made is neive! Even Marshall has admitted that much! There's a reason why there are so many of these origin 20's for sale used, (check out Reverb.com) and why they are so cheap! I'll let you figure that one out!
Not the best amp ever. Not even close.
No, it's not. But it's a damn good damn and for the price, it really is hard to beat. I was torn between this and the DSL, but the DSL doesn't do a clean or blues tone as well as the Origin.
It sounds terrible. Not a Plexi.
Glad to hear it 🤘🏻🤘🏻

@@JustinTaylorMD lol your awsome for that
The origin is an awful amp.
I got rid of it. Nothing like a plexi. Thin harsh, horrible .
The sv20 h is a totally different kettle of fish.
It's not meant to sound like a plexi. It's designed to sound like earlier circuits, hence the name. Much better cleans than the 1959 Superlead I owned and many times more giggable.
Perfect for my AC/DC loving ass lol
