    You've heard of and perhaps covet - maybe even own - an original or reissue Marshall JTM45, 1959SLP or one of their other classics. I believe Marshall have released another winner. Something that most will be able to afford and something that does proud their formidable legacy. The Origin Series takes the fundamental tones from the Marshall classics and offers them up in lighter and (now) more affordable combo and head packages. The Origin 20C is way impressive. Its 14kg package offers everything I love about classic Marshall: headroom, grind and THAT tone when everything is cranked and singing. It's a winner. There are features on the Origin series like S/R FX loop, DI Out and footswitchable Normal/Boost that you wouldn't have found on the old stuff but I'm sure will be welcome now. I haven't tried anything else from the series, but I'm keen to. Three thumbs up.
    Today's tools:

The only one that mentions the importance of saturated power amp stage, control the drive with the guitar volume, I guess it takes an Aussie to show how to play a Marshall by one fo the greatest Aussies! • @slimturnpike
    @slimturnpike 2 роки тому +18

    I went down to my local music shop to test drive one of these, liked it a lot. I was surprised how much low end there was, in fact more than any other 10" combo I've played through, including typical models from Fender, Laney, Vox etc. The cabinet is larger and deeper than that of most 10" combos, so I'm assuming that's the reason. I bought it on the spot, and since then I've played it at a three-hour standing-room only pub gig with a Stones cover band.
    As with any amp, the difference between playing an amp at home or in a studio - as in the above demo video - is night and day. By the end of the evening, I was running pretty much everything on 10 to stay in the mix. The Origin sounds really really good played like that, as it turns out. The tone (telecaster) didn't turn to mush but rather soared. No other 10" or 12" combo I've played through has survived that kind of treatment, tone-wise. A Princeton or a Deluxe, for example, completely falls apart at high volume. I was getting just about optimum string-to-string frequency response even cranked. This is another area where small combos tend to have issues.
    I used to own a 1959 Superlead, and very much as with that beast, the three-band eq knobs on this amp don't do a whole lot. I found I could achieve more tonal tweakage using the Tilt and Presence knobs.
    Great-sounding amp, and easy on the back when transporting. We'll see how it holds up to the punishing gigs I do. Once the speaker is fully broken in, I'll consider whether or not to replace it. I'll also be looking into upgrading the tubes even though I love the tone as it is so far, just because I like experimenting with different tube arrays.
    I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this amp to any rock/blues/soul guitarist looking for a great-sounding small combo.

    • @slimturnpike
      @slimturnpike Рік тому +1

      @neonthunderbird Thanks. I don't play it at home much except when testing out a new pedalboard setup, but it sounds pretty good at the 5w setting.

    • @slimturnpike
      @slimturnpike Рік тому +1

      @neonthunderbird Personally I think the Origin 20c has more character and is more versatile/tweakable than the Delta King

    • @slimturnpike
      @slimturnpike Рік тому +1

      @neonthunderbird It was the gorgeous cleans that sold me on this amp in the first place. As mentioned above, I owned and heavily gigged a plexi (w/two 4x12 Marshall cabs) for several years and this combo has much better cleans overall. I also owned two JTM60 combos that had killer cleans but sadly that series had chronic overheating issues. The Origin sounds a lot like the JTM60 and also the much older JTM45 that Hendrix played prior to the plexi era. That's always been my favorite Marshall amp even though I never owned one.
      People who say the Origin sounds like a plexi probably never owned an actual plexi. This is a warmer circuit, to my ears, much more like a JTM45 or the JTM60s I owned. It's not a particularly bright amp at all, and between the Tilt, Treble and Presence controls, you have a pretty good grip on the frequency range.
      It has more low end than any another 10" combo I've played. Princetons have a nice low end at lower volumes but the lows tend to mush out at high volume.
      As the more informed Origin reviews have pointed out, the best tones whether clean or overdriven happen when you crank the master volume. IMO the best way to run this amp is with the MV close to wide open, then adjust gain and guitar volume downward as needed.
      I've been gigging this amp for a year now and it's held up really well. I was initially thinking of replacing the VJr with a Creamback 10 to see if that would raise overall tone quality, but I've now decided it's not necessary. This is the only amp I've bought in the last ten years that I haven't swapped out the stock speaker. I think Marshall did a great job designing this amp considering the price point and I'm really happy with it. The only issue I've had is that the gain boost knob needs to be sprayed with contact cleaner every two or three months or it develops crackly static. I suppose that's because it's a push-pull knob so dust collects underneath the knob easily.

    • @slimturnpike
      @slimturnpike Рік тому +1

      @neonthunderbird You're welcome. I own both amps, and I play in a band that gigs 6-8 times a month so have had plenty of time to compare them. The Blues Jr doesn't really do the classic Fender tone, mainly because it's powered by a pair of EL84s. Classic Fender tone comes from 6L6s (eg Twin Reverb} or 6V6s (eg Deluxe Reverb, Princeton). The BJr sounds more like the early 18-watt Marshall 1974 (made 1965-68) or a more ballsy, less bright Vox A15, both of which use EL84s.
      The Marshall Origin 20C is powered by a pair of EL34s, the most classic Marshall engine. The enclosure is slightly larger than that of the Blues Jr even though the latter holds a 12" speaker while the Origin has a 10" speaker. Despite having a smaller speaker, the Origin 20C sounds bigger to me. The BJr is more boxy and constricted sounding to me, comparatively speaking. It's still a very usable amp but the Marshall has more girth and sparkle, plus with the tilt control and built in boost, more tweakability. The one advantage the BJr has over the Origin is that it has real spring reverb. With the Origin I use a Mr Black Deluxe Deluxe Plus, a pedal with excellent tremolo and reverb circuits.
      I've had the BJr over 10 years and have modified it with NOS Mullard tubes and a more efficient speaker (Eminence Ragin Cajun) so that it's a smooth and powerful little beast. But my Origin 20c sounds better, even stock. The 20C also has more headroom so it has brilliant cleans and takes pedals better. I hardly ever play my BJr anymore. The Origin is also a couple of pounds lighter than the BJr and usually costs less.

    Thanks for doing a proper demo without a bunch of silly djent/thrash metal detuning mumbo jumbo at the end. You get what the Marshall sound is all about, and as a fan of these amps since I began to play in the mid 80s, I appreciate that. I've been considering getting this amp. I love the DSL as well, but I feel they have a very un-Marshall like focus into deep metal darkness, which is not my thing. I love the classic rock tone that lets the guitar shine through in a musical way which is Marshall at its best. The Marshall sound, which the Origin represents, is very musical at its heart. It's not about covering tone with loudness, but enhancing the musicality of the guitar. This is why I've always prefered Marshalls to Boogies and whatever trend of the moment is all the rage.

    Well, now, this does have something of an old school sound. I think I'd prefer a 12" speaker even on a low-wattage amp but this sounds really gnarly. I like it. Great job, as usual, Brett.

    I just got the head here in Kiwiland for half the new price. I do not think the seller even unpacked it. Still has the tag and all the cables etc sealed in their bags. I am running it into Two Notes, so I can have the gain and master on full. I am quite impressed with the amp and that I can get this sound for so little money.
    I sold my Laney even though I liked its lead tone, because I just could not get a vintage tone out of it, i.e., Led Zep etc. The amp reminds me more of a 1974X than a Superlead due to the tubby-ness and almost brittle gain. I boost it with a BCC Tony Iommi Boost. That pedal gets it really singing. For something more extreme I slightly boost the TI Boost with a TS808. It gives a fatter version of that singing focused sustain you get from a cocked wah. I can almost get the amp into boosted JCM800 territory. I am surprised the low end holds up quite well and has that omph, but you have to shape the signal before it hits the amp, or you will have lots of flub. Next up is getting a Belle Epoch Deluxe and a bender style fuzz. Get my Jimmy on.
    P.S. I also bought a mint RG550 Genesis for a good price. I am not sure I like it yet. At first it felt like a toy guitar compared to my Gibson. But now it is getting broken in its tone is starting to come thru and I am finding myself playing stuff that i would find really hard to do on a Gibson. The really flat radius takes some getting used to. The skinny neck is not as bad as I thought though. So long playing nothing but Gibson and the Strat thing of having the volume control so close to the bridge is the thing I find hardest to deal with. I mute the high strings a lot on a Gibson, but it is really hard to do on an RG. It makes me play differently. Undecided if I will keep it, but I do need something that can do Strat like tones etc.

    this is my first Marshall amp ,im really happy with it . it has such a nice grit when it just starts to break up and if you put an OD in front its a power house. the three watt settings and ten inch speaker make it perfect for apartments or bedroom players.

    I have the 20 Watt Origin head running into a 4 x 12 Marshall 1960A cabinet. No way in hell will the combo sound like this. The secret to the Love I have for this is the Boss SD 1 yellow OD pedal I have in front of the input. Wow wow Wow. Love this amp so much. Comes to life with the Volume cranked up, and gain up there too. The guitar cleans up so well by the volume pot on your guitar its like switching to another channel. ♥

      Of course the 4 x 12 will give you much more volume and bottom end , But for PORTABILITY - WEIGHT reasons the 20 Combo is Awesome and definately more than Loud enough ! !

      Todd: Amen to that. I have the 5 watt Origin combo and it's superb.
      I disconnected the internal speaker and am driving two 8 ohm 2x12's (using a 'cab merger' box to keep the impedance at 16 ohms) and the little guy sounds incredible.
      I'm using an open-backed Laney Cub Cab and a closed-back Randall RG212 and with an MXR Classic Overdrive feeding an MXR Distortion +, the sound is, uh, "exhilarating" (aka deafening).

      @@lespauldisciple3349 It's an amp that you have to get to know. Once you do, it's fantastic. It will be very loud if you want amp gain. It's a great pedal platform, though, which is how I use it. If you have somewhere to crank it, it's glorious!

    Great demo Brett of the Origin. Most of the other videos I've watched can't seem to dial them in too well and I was starting to think they weren't a good amp, as I've been contemplating getting the 50W head. But the sounds you were getting sound typical Marshally - not unlike what I get out of my TSL

    This is the best demo of the amp I've seen on Tube and I 've searched quite a lot... I am torn between Marshall DSL 5 cr and this one (they are similar in price, DSL 5 being about 50 euros cheaper).... I understand that this amp produces mild natural overdrive when cranked, and the thing I liked is that you slammed its front with a pedal ... but, would using a Tube Screamer in front if it give it more sustain?

    This has been one of the most difficult amps to get a consistent impression of from UA-cam demos. I don’t understand why, but with the same general settings, in most people’s demos it sounds like a muddy mess, but in others, like yours, it has a nice bright Plexi chime. It’s like it’s Schrödinger’s amp.

    I was afraid that 10 inch speaker is not enough than I went to guitar shop and try it.And I got pure Marshall sound, fat and loud and I was like wow man this is a beast but is it loud enough when whole band comes in, will it sound thin...than I disconnected 10 inch speaker and plugged this little monster into 4x12 Marshall cab..and magic happened...plenty of headroom, lot of bass, and my sound was all over the room...So I bought it...Guys for this money you get this 10 inch speaker so you could play at home, rehearsals, small clubs without mic or any other venue with mic in front...but whenever you need more sound and headroom just connect it to bigger cab and you will get miracle...for this money you get 20 w head and 10 inch speaker ;)
