Great review! I think the idea of an amp like this being for a "mature" player is a really great point. I remember as a kid playing through someone's single channel classic Marshall. I had no idea how to handle the amp and why the older guy I was jamming with sounded so much better on the very same setup. I hadn't yet developed those dynamics, pick attack, or *feel* that can really bring the best out of a low gain single channel amp.
Just got to play a 20 watt combo. I agree with the review completely. I think the best way to describe the amp is touch sensitive in the manner of Joe Bonamassa, Roben Ford, or Larry Carlton. Using the guitar volume and tone knobs and pick attack changes the sound dramatically. Want clean-ish? Back off the volume and your attack. Want more gain? Harder attack and more volume. Want more still? Take your choice of boost, over drive, distortion, or fuzz pedals. Most pedals were designed around these amps to begin with.

This is the best video. Sounds great. I’ve tried to record mine, I have the origin 50h, but it doesn’t sound very good when i record it, in the recording it doesn’t sound the same way I hear it. I mic the amp, use a 4x12 cab, sure 57 microphone, focusrite 3rd gen interface, epiphone Sg standard, FL studio. I don’t know what is wrong, maybe it’s too loud still at 5w, maybe the mic is too close, maybe it’s my interface, maybe the mic isn’t good enough, I don’t know. Thank you
Hi Don, thanks for your comment. Regarding the recording issue, I don't think it's the gear, unless something is broken. I suggest to you to keep experimenting with the mic placement until you get the sound you want. It's not an easy task cause the mic placement does massive differences on the final sound. Cheers
I had the combo version of this amp, the gain interacted weird with the volume, it also got a lot of hiss with high volume, and a buzzy sounding speaker, maybe it was just the one I had.
Probably. But a hiss at high volume is normal. If you're near any electronics the hiss will be louder. My 50 watt origin head and sv20h both had a hiss in my bedroom at medium to higher volume. That was around a TV and stuff. However in rehearsal and at gigs, no hiss unless it's cranked very high. What do youvmean the gain interacted weird with the volume? The gain adds volume and distortion. It's kinda like a volume knob. Think of the master volume as the overall controlled volume, and the gain knob as it would be on a head without a master volume knob.
I haven't heard any particular complain on reliability so far, however it's really affordable, so I'm not sure about stressing it too much like in a tour
Awesome demo! I bought one last week and so happy with! But a question: do you add reverb/delay in the fx loop? Because when I put my pedals in the fx loop and crank the master it sounds not very good.. Is that because cranking the master? Thx for your help
No, I use a different setup using the torpedo captor and plugging the fx after the cab simulation. In studio I rarely use an fx loop I don't have any live loud experience with the origin, sorry :)
Bonjour, seen them all and i must admit best review so far. Bravo for the work. Must work now to get tones as good as yours from mine. I would like to have your opinion on a head I would like to buy. Fender heads are not common, expensive and not as cool looking as marshall heads.. Thank you in advance and Congratz again. A new follower from Bordeaux France.
Hi!🤟I really like this amp but I don't know if the 20w with a 4x12 cab is enough for (hard rock) band practice and smaller gigs or should I go with the 50w head?🤔 I'm mostly playing EVH kinda sounds he's my number one inspiration for everything that goes along with music so... probably i would put the volume on 11😝 Thanks! G
@@TheGuitalian I would buy a PAF style pickup too and then just roll back the volume pot on my guitar for cleans😄 But idk if 20w is enough when it's cranked/50w is too much?🤷
The 20 is right on that edge of being not loud enough but the 50 may be too much. The tone of these amps jump in at high volume. Smaller clubs it would be ok, but with louder/bigger crowds, you might have to mic it. Just depends on where you play. For band practice, it definitely will hold its own. The cranked 20 will get you that tone, but the cranked 50 might be too much
I have the 20H and it has a noticeable hum even when all knobs are on zero. The hum comes from the speaker and I find it very annoying. I’ve read that it’s a problem with this amp. Is yours humming too?
For me, the one I had did not break up and saturate like my Plexi replica. It was kind of brittle in the high end and losse in the low end, which would be by design. It would have been good for a edge of break up dynamic tone though, especially at the price. My Plexi sounds quite old school, but the O20H was even more old school like early JTM I guess. I just ordered a mini Silver Jubilee head for more modern tones and will not mod the Plexi to do Jose mod type sounds, so I have both (I think if I mod the Plexi to do more modern sounds I might lose some of the Plexi-ness, so I will leave it alone). Italian huh? My dad's family were from there. Brescia where they had been for over 1000 years after travelling all the way from Bergamo lol. They moved to England in exile during the revolution. We are in NZ now. We mostly forgot the lingo, but not the cooking and eating.
@@unabonger777 Yeah, I have a bunch of old Mullards in NOS condition, plus some old 6CA7s etc. However, providing the tubes are working as designed, they do not make a huge difference brand to brand etc. Far more of the tone and character of an amp is in the circuit design and component values etc. Check out the changes this Aussie fella makes to the circuit to get it to sound more like a hot rod JCM800, which the OR20 does not really do due to the circuit being so different to classic ones, i.e. OR20 does not have same the preamp stages, plus it is not fixed bias. Tube changes ain't going fix that. ua-cam.com/video/Q_hiXjOS1Y8/v-deo.html
@@aquilarossa5191 In my experience tubes can be the difference between sounding good or not. Yeah, if you don't like the character of the amp tubes won't help. You aren't going to get power tube saturation out of a pair of EL34 running at 20 watts anyway, so the tone of this amp must be in the pre-amp. I don't see anything better at this price range, though. It sounds pretty good.
@@unabonger777 I am not too familiar with the exact points of clipping in a OR20, but generally you can get a pair of EL34s to clip in a low power config. A common way is called power scaling, or voltage mods. It reduces the clean headroom of the valve, so it saturates earlier. That's how builders get power amp saturation out of lots of amps that have a low power mode. The principle can be seen in reverse with higher voltage. Clean headroom for a pair of EL34 can be as high as 60 watts, or higher headroom in a 18v overdrive pedal is another example. The FAQs from a mod maker explains it quite well. londonpower.com/power-scaling-faq/
Plexi Tone? on a Marshall? for $650.00? (I just checked that out)..........Man that Bang for the Buck is really, really, really tough to beat. I have a Marshall Vintage Modern, which is JTM45 Style as it uses KT66s........and it's an amazing sounding amp, but I really want to have the Hendrix EL34 type of tone so I was thinking on saving money for a Studio Vintage (which costs 3 Times this), but after seen this video I NEED TO REEVALUATE. Great Playing, great playing. 🎸🎸🎸
IIRC, early Hendrix was JTM 45/100, which was Marshall's first 100W (actually 80W but peaks close to 100?), and also used KT66. It was 68 or 69, maybe late 67 when he switched to the Super 100 (EL34). If I got any of this wrong, please correct. JTM 45/100 was used by many in the mid to late 60s, and that's the tone I'm after; hoping my inbound Origin 50C gets me there. If not, next up Ceriatone. Cheers!
@@zoomzoom3950 Yeah, I am not sure though if JTM45/100 made it till the late 60s, my understanding is that by 68 Marshall have switched to Plexis. But you are correct early Hendrix is KT66. Jimi's tone from Monterrey (KT66) is massively different from Albert Hall.
Hey man, would this origin 20 be too loud for home use running at 0.5watts? I'm considering this but I want to be able to use this to play at home too. Cab is 2x12 vertical with V30s in it. I could also get a 1x12, would that make a big difference?
It depends on your expectations. If you want a full sound like the one I’m getting on this video, yeah, it will be too loud. The thing is that if you use a 12 inch guitar speaker it will always be loud if you want that typical full guitar sound, especially on lead and crunch tones. That’s why the reactive load + IR is the solution for me. It’s just my opinion of course
@@TheGuitalian Thanks for the answer man! You have any idea how loud would it be? Like extremely loud or just loud that my neighbors would listen to it?
@@TheGuitalian not plexi sounding though, and apparently have the common problem of mismatched channels which makes the shared eq a fail. There is no solution for me for lower cost. I am trying to think of how incandescent make this work for cleans and dirt without too much effing around.
It depends on the drummer, the speaker you’re using and the sound that you want. If you use a 1X12 with a 20 watt speaker playing super clean funk music with a super loud drummer probably not. If you’re using crunch and lead tones yes, especially with a larger cab and more powerful speakers like v30
I disagree %100! This amp is perfect for the greenhorn who luvs classic and classic hard rock. It is simple, luvs pedals and That is Old School my friend! What ever ya want can be had via pedals and processors, using the FX loop! Other amps are more tone specific. This one you can mold to be your own! Me? I front end it with a Bogner Blue Mini Pedal, and run a Lexicon MPX100/110 in the loop, thru a single Celestion G15V-100 Fullback cab or two1x12 Heritage G12H-30 cabs.
I like them. It just isn't very usable to me because it needs to be run up too loud to sound good and you won't be able to do that with modern stage volume restrictions. They have little to no clean headroom either. I got mine cheap (£250) on a blowout and sold it for £250. I had fun but nowhere near the holy grail.
@@matt926uk1 Seriously though, no I haven't. Couple of reasons: 1. They are in many cases more expensive than my amplifier, sometimes by orders of magnitude. I'm not that rich. 2. I find it distasteful and silly using digital to record analog. There's a reason why we use tube amps and its not because they are practical. I'm sure digital can sound just as good or close enough as makes no difference - but it won't FEEL like analog. That said.. I was talking to Kid Anderson recently on here about his setup in his recent Greeny tribute: ua-cam.com/video/gHNB-XYcm_g/v-deo.html He's using my favourite amp (a 70's silverface) dimed in to an OX and the recorded sound is all IR. In fact he said he frequently doesn't even use a speaker in the room for recording. I can't deny that sounds great. I just don't like it. :P
@@cgavin1 That Albatross cover does indeed sound great. Fair enough man If it's not your thing. For me, recording at home it's the best option, I can't play too loud but love valve amps, I think they still sound great used like this (slightly better than my helix) but I agree in a perfect situation you'd want to be all analog. I have a captor x and I run various valve amps into it and out through my studio monitors, I think it sounds great and I'm having a lot of fun anyway. I do think it's a bit silly having a valve amp and only turning it up to 1 or 2, that's like buying a ferrari and only driving at 30mph lol. I don't know about the 'feel', it's supposed to be there with them but with latency and everything it's a different experience, not the same as being in the room with a roaring amp and having the guitar and speaker interact.

Best demo of this amp. Grazie mille Gitalian e cordiali saluti :-)
Thanks Mikel, appreciated!
Great revue.
I’m really digging this review and for the cost of it - it may just end up in my living room yet ..
Cheers
@@TheGuitalian thank you so much, I’ll keep trying. Ciao!
On the "best hi-gain tones" section, are you running the Soul Food in front or in the loop?
In front
Is this amplifier a professional model or a Marshall Amateur model? Are electronics good? Great video !!!
I haven't heard any particular complain on reliability so far, however it's really affordable, so I'm not sure about stressing it too much like in a tour
Nice review. Had a question on the reverb you were using in this demonstration? What type of reverb was it? Was it a hall, plate, spring, or analog?
it's the 80s reverb in strymon flint that should be a hall rack reverb
Hi, What speakers are you using to output the Simulated Cab... Are you using your Yamaha monitors (HS5 or HS8 ) ???
Yes, I'm always using the hs5, actually the hs50 that are the older model since i had them for more than 10 years
Awesome brown sound!!
Can i get the same tone with a Marshall dsl 20 hr and soul food pedal too?
THANKS so MUCH
I think you can, but the speaker does a great part in the final tone
@@TheGuitalian i have a 212 open box with greenbacks loaded!?
It probably will do the job
Love your guitar
Awesome demo! I bought one last week and so happy with! But a question: do you add reverb/delay in the fx loop? Because when I put my pedals in the fx loop and crank the master it sounds not very good.. Is that because cranking the master? Thx for your help
No, I use a different setup using the torpedo captor and plugging the fx after the cab simulation. In studio I rarely use an fx loop
I don't have any live loud experience with the origin, sorry :)
@@TheGuitalian allright thank you so much for answer!
anytime!
my friend i have a cabinet 1x12 blackshadow mesabogie.... This amp can sound very well whit this 1x12?
Bonjour, seen them all and i must admit best review so far. Bravo for the work. Must work now to get tones as good as yours from mine. I would like to have your opinion on a head I would like to buy. I want a "fender hotrod deluxe like" 20/or 30watt tube head amp for clean blues and pedal plateform. Do you have any suggestions please? Fender heads are not common, expensive and not as cool looking as marshall heads.. Thank you in advance and Congratz again. A new follower from Bordeaux France.
Not really easy, I was searching for the same kind of amp. Probably Morgan amps would be cool, as well as Dr Z. However I haven’t tried them yet
@@TheGuitalian merci beaucoup!!! keep up the good work. Ciao !!
Hi!🤟I really like this amp but I don't know if the 20w with a 4x12 cab is enough for (hard rock) band practice and smaller gigs or should I go with the 50w head?🤔 I'm mostly playing EVH kinda sounds he's my number one inspiration for everything that goes along with music so... probably i would put the volume on 11😝
Thanks!
G
Maybe you'll not have super clean cleans, but for distorted ones you should be alright
The cranked 20 will get you that tone, but the cranked 50 might be too much
Can you share what chorus effect you're using at the clip's start?
It's a Strymon Mobius
Sounds killer
I have the 20H and it has a noticeable hum even when all knobs are on zero. The hum comes from the speaker and I find it very annoying. I’ve read that it’s a problem with this amp. Is yours humming too?
I actually can’t remember right now, not that I really care actually on an amp, if I’m not playing I simply use the standby switch
Where’s the reverb coming from?
Enjoy the pasta, my dear Red Eagle ;)
Cheers!
did you try different tubes in it?
Thanks man :)
How do you think this compares to the DSL's?
The origin is more vintage oriented, while the DSL is more modern
i just bought this how do i hook the pedal up that came with it is it an overdrive off on ?
Damn this sounds amazing
great review :)
Thanks, appreciated
I love mine
This amp does NOT get the respect it deserves. I have the O20H. It runs through 2 G12M's in a 23x29 enclosure. This thing is sweet as honey.
I agree!
Like extremely loud or just loud that my neighbors would listen to it?
your neighbours will definitely listen to it :D
which chorus are you using in your cleans?
Strymon Mobius, the factory preset "call the cops"
I bought this about 3 monts before this video was made for 399 i just looked and it is now 649
If only it was 2 channel with a dedicated clean.
You should check out the DSL line
@@TheGuitalian not plexi sounding though, and apparently have the common problem of mismatched channels which makes the shared eq a fail. There is no solution for me for lower cost. I am trying to think of how incandescent make this work for cleans and dirt without too much effing around.
Yep, plexi amps are usually single channel. I Think there is not a lot of choice in this price range for the thing you’re searching for
This is exactly what I was looking if this thing is lightweight too I am sold!!!
I just bought this head. The question is: will it sit on my 115, 212 or 410 cab?......
I'd probably go for the 212, especially if it's greenback loaded
@@TheGuitalian ah, it does have green backs
I'd have no doubt then
@@TheGuitalian right have have you ever played through proper 115?
not really, does it have too much bass freq?
And ......it sounds like looking for love from whitesnake and Sykes solo...
do you think it's loud enough to jam with a band?
It depends on the drummer, the speaker you’re using and the sound that you want.
If you use a 1X12 with a 20 watt speaker playing super clean funk music with a super loud drummer probably not.
If you’re using crunch and lead tones yes, especially with a larger cab and more powerful speakers like v30
Oh buddy! The fingers on ya
Had this amp. Wish I didn't sell it lol
What did you use for reverb?
Strymon Flint
He says how great it sounds with humbuckers and then plays a song that was recorded on a tele. lol
That's what attenuators and loadboxes with IR's are for
@@matt926uk1 Ready meals and Dominos Pizza. No thanks.
@@cgavin1 Lol, have you tried them?
@@matt926uk1 Seriously though, no I haven't. Couple of reasons: 1. They are in many cases more expensive than my amplifier, sometimes by orders of magnitude. I'm not that rich. 2. I find it distasteful and silly using digital to record analog. There's a reason why we use tube amps and its not because they are practical. I'm sure digital can sound just as good or close enough as makes no difference - but it won't FEEL like analog.
That said..
I was talking to Kid Anderson recently on here about his setup in his recent Greeny tribute:
ua-cam.com/video/gHNB-XYcm_g/v-deo.html
He's using my favourite amp (a 70's silverface) dimed in to an OX and the recorded sound is all IR.
Its NOT A PLEXI!!! the design intentions of this amp were pre-plexi, vintage voiced
ITS MORE A JTM45 THAN A PLEXI
"Nice Hands"...write some songs and demo them!
what do you mean?
This amp is a gutless turd. I have owned over 30 Marshall amps. This is the worst of the bunch. Save your money and buy a real Marshall.
too much babbling and not enough demo!
Are those effects @3:35 in the fx loop?
compressor and chorus in front of the amp, delay and reverb after the torpedo captor, in stereo feeding in the audio interface
