@@msbeecee1 36 hours one week rotating with 72 the next for a couple of months then I went to 36 hours every Monday and would extend it for as long as I could, that worked the best for me not deciding ahead how long I would go. I did that for a year, six months after the weight loss it became sort of spiritual with the mental clarity and physical high. Now I fast once a month at least for however long it feels right. This is interesting. Recently I've been thinking about what I call fasting. After 5 years on this journey, I've stopped calling 18/6 intermittent fasting. I now think of it as normal eating.

Varying intermittent fasting times has gotten me out of 30+ years of autoimmune inflammation and full recovery after chemo. 16-8, 20-4, 24hrs, 36hrs, 48 hours. Some 12-12’s when I’m not feeling well or have events. I still live my life and work it around what I’ve got going on. I also don’t advertise it so I’m less likely to sabotage.

I’ve been > 95% carnivore for 4+ years. 1-2 meals a day. I/F for a large part of it, but now more like 2 meals a day and weekly fast 36-48 every week. I went from 195lbs to 170, eating full satiating meals with occasional fruit or avocado. This lifestyle not only works but is long term sustainable. I feel almost superhuman. I can go days without food and little to no loss of peak performance. Your reference to pure carnivores, mainly carnivores and herbivores is dead on.

Typically do OMAD fri and sat with weds, thurs and sun usually 2MAD, sometimes OMAD. Result has been to slim down from a morbidly obese diabetic body by 122lbs in 8.5 months. It's wise to give these things up and learn to lean on a more permanent solid inner contentment because outer things won't do it for you for long and will lead to problems. It's a difficult road, I'm no saint but I'm trying my best.

Well said Dr Cywes. Thanks for the insight. This is a topic I’ve often thought about. Humans and other carnivores probably evolved in an environment where they were not able to feast on meat & healthy fats every day and certainly not several times a day.
I’m not an expert, but as scavengers, we almost certainly had to compete with other scavengers and may have had to contend with the least nutritious “leftovers”, if anything at all.
As hunters, running down game and prey larger and more powerful than us probably took a lot of rudimentary planning and the expenditure of a great deal of energy.
In the end, how often we ate must have been highly dependent on the variability of the movement of herds and the seasons.
The frequency with which we ate and the amount that we ate must have been highly irregular. So, we were forced to “fast” frequently out of necessity for hundreds of thousands if not a million years.
So in the end, it would not be surprising that as modern humans, fasting might be required to obtain optimal health. It's just my speculation as a non-expert. It’s the world in which we evolved.

Comparing warm blooded carnivore animals to cold blooded is like comparing apples to oranges. I agree with Dr Chaffee. When eating the correct diet "carnivore", especially Lion diet, it's as if you are fasting. I consistently eat in a 4 hour window and fast 20 hours. I have done so for 5 months. I started off at 260 and very sick. I now weigh in around 200 and feel better than I did 30 years ago. If someone has cancer then I would agree to fast for several days frequently. I only eat about 1 pound of meat with lots of fat too. In other words, I don't gorge because I feel full and satisfied. Food or eating is to live. I don't live to eat.

Dr. Cywes, I love the way you look at things. As you advise, I'm thinking and asking questions. Are we comparable to other carnivores? How many other carnivores have mastered fire, learnt to use tools, learnt to read and write, learnt to speak, obtained a PhD, qualified as an MD, you get the point? We are special. We are, at the very least, Apex predators. Perhaps we did something differently to other carnivores? You are organizing your eating schedule around a calendar. How many lions hang around to eat meals twice a day at weekends with the pride, but then deliberately fast on Mondays but then eat a single meal per day while at work the rest of the week? Perhaps crocodiles and snakes eat once a week or month because they are too stuffed to cram any more food into their stomachs and not because it's good not to eat? On a proper human diet, if we poop once a day, doesn't that suggest we should eat once a day? If forced eating is wrong, then wouldn't forced fasting be wrong? Perhaps the only way to balance our eating is to eat to satiety and then not to eat again until hungry?

I have been " carnivore " for just over four years and I can see myself doing this for another fifty. I don't see it as a diet or fad, its just the way a human should eat. I don't think there's anything wrong with eating a few Ohelo berries when they're in season or climbing a coconut tree for a coconut a couple times a year.
I don't fast. At all. What I do is get up and out of the house before sunrise and go to the beach for a swim or scuba dive or go for a run in the mountains. Usually getting home by noon and eating then.

By analyzing the constituents of the bones they have figured out that prior to 20,000 years ago all humans were s carnivorous as the big cats. Nearly all humans were as carnivorous as the big cats until 12,000 years ago, when some event, impact or volcano there is debate killed off most of the larger fauna. After that in some areas the survivors got by on grain., so for thousands of years there were populations of carnivores and populations of omnivores. Those who ate grains were shorter by several inches and had a much lower lifespan. The carnivores typically died when their joints broke down and they could not hunt any more. So folks left the carnivore way, took up agriculture with its addictive carbs and husbandry, and became civilized over time.

You can adapt to fasts; try it for yourself, especially for better recovery with growth hormone and for mitochondria, and examine muscle mass. It is a good idea to ensure you are fat adapted before attempting extended fasting. There is a night and day difference in how easy it is to fast after you have achieved fat adaptation and then keto adaptation.

I tried fasting. My big toenails split and fell out and I developed stomach issues including constipation.
Might be OK for some but my body can't handle it.

For being able to fast you have to be fat adapted. If not it doesn't work. Try a week of keto and after try to fast. Good luck !

Yeah. I'd been keto for about 4 months at that point. Guess it doesn't suit everyone.

@@ton-gle4137 then probably mentally you are unprepared. I made 19 days water fast, 14 days twice but if my mind is not prepared sometimes it is hard to start even for me.

what advice do you have for underweight people like me who's 6 feet 139 lbs? I need to gain, not lose. If I do fasting and go carnivore, I'll soon vanish away completely.

don't bother fasting then. I went carnivore. Had lots of worries about losing weight as I am quite skinny. Have put on 12lbs easy. Never been able to do that with any other way of eating!

Hats off to Dr Ken Berry for his refusal to seek or accept any monetization of carnivore knowledge. No sponsors no supplement peddling at all. I know it's everyone's right to find ways to separate people from their money, but it is SO tiresome.

I'm sorry to hear that, however I, along with many others, have definitely lost weight and improved health with IF. Things to consider: some people (young, pregnant, breastfeeding, underweight or anorexic...) should not fast. You have to start easy, just delaying breakfast and anticipating dinner in the beginning. Also you need to reduce carbs intake, because otherwise the carb spikes will cause huge problems. Fast breaking should be done with some ACV and lean protein. After one hour, you can eat all the rest of what is foreseen in the feasting window. Avoid carbs as much as possible.
