    I’m in tears listening to this. I wish I’d heard it 40 years ago, but at least now it’s comforting to make sense of my life. After 10 years of twice daily bulimia, I left my husband and decided to not eat altogether because everything I chose to eat hurt like hell. Obviously I did eat, but very much under my own control and I kept making painful choices by choosing high fibre/low fat options. Eating with others was most anxiety making. I had many tests, but eventually found UA-cam doctors who introduced me to the Ketogenic way of eating. The meat and fat did not hurt my guts and I have made an amazing recovery eating mainly carnivore now. Over the years I have been so very lonely because it’s been too risky to let people close to me and who then insist I go out for meals with them!! Have been keto and now carnivore for over 3 years and in the last year weaned myself off my anxiety medication. I think I will always be afraid of gaining weight, but I am living proof that I can eat til I am full twice a day, on delicious meats, fish and eggs and my mood stays level, I rarely get hungry and I can cope with other people watching me eat. New friendships are still tricky because I find it difficult to trust people. I have remarried and have 2 wonderful children. My heartfelt feeling is that Dr Cywes is RIGHT about eating disorders.

And you do it with a rare humility and true integrity. I am so sorry the medical world has been hijacked by the insurance companies and you have to fight to speak truth with conviction. My husband's cardiologist insisted we take the VA's "nutrition class" after his 'cardiac event' and triple stent procedure in 2014. We eventually took the class and ended up walking out. Prior to that event we'd already started learning the truth about "heart healthy foods" and fake foods and had started making changes so when the "nutritionist" started sharing how we should be eating products labeled heart healthy and fake fats we ended up walking out. We knew she was full of It. When the cardiologist asked if we took the class we told him we walked out and why. He was genuinely shocked about what we told him. We have since learned sooo much more and are very glad we walked out of that class and refused to be forced to go back.

      It is astounding the level of ignorance among medical staff and adherence to the nonsense of hi fiber- lo fat. Very rare to find independent thinkers- my NP is finally considering that there are options as a colleague reversed DM. I can only hope our lives will reflect a better way and that many others will walk out from the nonsense.

    Hi Dr Cywes I have done well on keto over 130lbs but have had an on going problem with diarrhoea so decided to try carnivore and my bowel issues have virtually disappeared. So my take away from this is that after 40 years of an embarrassing condition and numerous medications and visits to specialists it all comes down to what I was eating.

    This was the best video ever!! Thank you. It is exactly as you say an anxiety and trust issue, I know this from personal experience. For over 4 decades I avoided fat and practically lived on carbohydrates. And I was miserable, plagued with hypoglycemia and panic attacks. Only a couple of years ago I had the courage ,after watching videos about ketogenic diet ,did I slowly add fat into my diet. In the beginning my body revolted because it didn’t know how to digest fat, but in time it learned how to do it and now I have no problem eating it anymore. It was the scariest thing I ever did, to trust in the process of this new way of eating. To my surprise I did not gain any weight and felt so much better. My panic attacks and hypoglycemia practically disappeared. I wished there were more Doctors as insightful as you.

    I've had anorexia with some binge eating behaviours for so long I'm maybe in the perfect point to hear this. I need to eat more fat, I need to switch my mindset from salads being the safe food when it's not doing me any good. Sometimes we just need someone to say it, eating the salads doesn't even make sense fitness-wise and I've never been able to be actually fit with my disorder, always "skinny fat" because of the insulin

    Episode 350 came up in my feed tonight. I was blown away by these deep insights into how to help or minister to someone who is struggling with anorexia. As a life and health coach, this is invaluable information. Thank you so much for caring enough about those who struggle with this disorder and for sharing how to minister to their hearts and ease their fears and anxiety around getting or being fat. That lie has to be dislodged from their minds--piece by piece perhaps, in LOVE. Eating animal fat is a powerful healer...especially for the brain. Thank you for the fantastic and compassionate explanation so we can be equipped to help should we encounter someone in this situation.

    You described my wife perfectly. She has been suffering for years with all of the symptoms you listed. She did change her diet, as you described. However, it did not help. Then she learned about SUGAR ALCOHOL and the many hidden forms of it in natural food and, of all things - toothpaste. After cutting out all sources of sugar alcohols, she is now starting to get better. Is sugar alcohol such a great deceiver? Sorbitol, Mannitol, and Erythritol affect her the worst. Getting these sugars out of her diet is the hardest thing to do.

    • @scoobydadog246
      @scoobydadog246 4 місяці тому +1

      Wow - so just removing those resolved her symptoms? Did they affect her even in small amounts like toothpaste? We could be affected by things we don't even know about so easily i.e. toothpaste. I see sorbitol in a lot of them, never would have looked before. Even so called 'natural' ones, or flouride free, which many people try to avoid now only to get other ingredients just as bad or worse!

    • @visualsoundadvice
      @visualsoundadvice 4 місяці тому

      Sensodyne toothpaste has sorbitol as the second nonactive ingredient. That was enough to give her problems, even when she was eating carnivore for 30 days. All of the bloating and nausea stopped within 2 days after cutting out all sugar alcohols, including apples, peaches, and bananas, and switching to a different toothpaste. I wonder if Dr. Cywes is aware of the effects of sugar alcohol masking as other illnesses and being a hidden cause of eating disorders. @@scoobydadog246

      @@churchsoundandacoustics1616 Yes, sugar alcohols are a carbohydrate attached to an alcohol , obviously. The issue for most is not that they are carbs, (b/c we don't metabolize them like glucose) but they seem to be very irritating or disruptive to the GI tracts in many people, and another hypothesis is that they mess with the microbiome. I don't know, but it seems that for many people, just a small amount of some of these things can do a lot of damage, and your story is a perfect example. Kind of scary too, b/c imagine how many people could be suffering and never think about something like toothpaste! So, thanks for sharing!

Had a stent placed, and cardiologist insisted he take a powerful statin. One problem with that: His lipid numbers were already low. Yet they insisted they had to be lowered further. Experienced terrible pain and other side effects and decided on his own to stop taking it. Felt better almost immediately. The healthiest thing we can do is tell them where they can shove their Rx while walking out the door for good.

What you are saying makes so much sense and I believe the low fat/no fat movement is the reason we are in the place that we are in the US with Obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Most of my patients also have very low incomes and cannot afford services that are not covered by insurance. How can I get them connected with the counseling support and dietary instructions that they need to overcome these huge obstacles to achieving lasting metabolic health? I don't hear the term hypochondriac used very often these days. Maybe its out of fashion or has been deamed inappropriate. Seeing first hand people with profound eating disorders and the resulting disintegration of lives, I think is one of the most frustrating syndromes to understand. Your compasion, insight and understanding is most commendable. Thank you!

    Thank you...this is an amazing video. I am in tears as I was deliberately torturing myself. It was the only thing I could control in my life and the world and yes I have severe depression and anxiety from a young age.
    I was bulimic for over 10 yrs, during my late teens and 20s. I knew I was destroying my body by what I was doing. It got to a point I would stand on the scales after a mouthful of water and try to throw that up. I would eat boxes of laxatives until they were useless, so I started to drink Epsom salts of it didn't work straight away I would try to throw that up also...one day I was sitting down and suddenly vomiting up blood. I destroyed my teeth, my gut etc. I have been suffering ever since. Recently stumbling across carnivore diet I am seeing results and the chronic GI issues are slowly getting better...

    I was in hospital for 10 days and on my chart it said that I was to be given a diabetic diet. I was consistently fed terrible carbs and even though I was eating very little, my blood sugar was through the roof every day until I left! The nurses admitted that "for some reason" the hospital didn't seem to understand what a diabetic should or should not eat. Shocking.

    Dr Rob, Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou, for this video! My daughter(now 39yrs old) suffered with anorexia in her early 20s. She, as you say, is still very thin but healthy. Although I have always tried to get her to eat fat & she does eat some. But to hear you say it’s an anxiety issue, was so affirming for me! One issue she has & has had at different times, is a persistent itchy rash on her wrist. She had tried all sorts of meds, creams, potions etc….all to no avail. Any suggestions? She is on an anti-depressant & has been for some time. I’d really appreciate any ideas as this rash(even though it seems a small issue) causes a lot of angst!

    I have been bulimic since 16years old; I’m now 57. In my 30’s, I did 4 yrs of counseling where I was told it was a self-control issue, it was a portion issue, etc. The amt of shame and guilt in purging is hard to put into words. Ppl who love me responded with, “that’s disgusting” so it’s a silent addiction that isolated me even further. I haven’t purged in yrs but EVERY time I overeat my brain goes to the possibility of a “solution” to make me feel better and then mentally way worse. I started eating lower carb abt a year ago with much trial and error and every time I fell off, I was more acutely aware of how bad I felt and that my normal was pretty bad. One day it struck like lightning; I wasn’t having any thoughts or purging- NONE! The more satiety and less inflamed I felt, the less I thought about every meal, calorie or lb. It freed my brain. In 40+ years, I’ve NEVER been able to break free from the emotional coaster until this happened naturally. I can feel in my brain and every cell a release of the shame and pain but I’m also incensed with rage looking back on how I was blamed for being weak and treated so poorly.

    Interesting you’re doing a 48h fast once a week. I started this protocol after watching Matthew Phillips’ talk on Cancer and how we are really designed to be in Ketosis most of the time, not fed just on Glucose. Works well for me. Like you, I start fasting after supper on Sunday evening and restart 48h later, Tuesday supper-time. Keeps the family happy as they only see I miss one meal in the evening.
    To ‘see’ what’s going on I’ve recently bought a Keto-Mojo meter which can tell me my Glucose, Ketone levels and then my GKI index. It was 2 after just 24h of fasting previously 👍🏻
    Dawn effect this morning (Mon) quite noticeable. 2 readings last night glucose levels were dropping slowly, back up slightly this morning to 5.1 mmol/l. Will be interesting to monitor morning and evening to see how the levels are after 48h.
    Might be illuminating to measure these levels over a longer fast too. Matthew Phillips does recommend 5 day fasts from time to time, to completely rest the mitochondria.

    I love this video I've been watching a lot of your videos lately and I live in Vero Beach Florida without going into all of my details I started the carnivore diet and quickly changed over to your low-carb alternative I have lost 31 pounds while studying both but it is working for me as a diabetic type two my insulin had to drop from 93 units a day to 35 and in the last week my blood sugars average have gone down to 123 with that 35 long acting units every night no insulin during the day… My question is this I don't know what my ketones are but I understand my insulin that I take is probably eating the ketones is this true? I would also like to talk with you someday!

    You just described a close friend of mine in perfect detail. I am not sure I would have thought of her as an anorexic but the emotional state fits her perfectly. Even gaining trust is not necessarily going to be effective. She trusts me completely. In her case she has a fear of being alone and when her relationships go bad she continues to be in them and even helps them even though it is causing her harm (not physical). She will justify the relationship’s value to avoid being alone. She then starts having more and more physical issues, not just gut but bone and teeth breakage as well. She has had lots of four letter words tagged on to her and her medical background clouds her vision…she knows best. The only thing that really gave her improvement was therapy to deal with her issues. I think my best work around would be to encourage her to get back into therapy and set the example myself on the effectiveness of a carnivore diet or keto by continuing to lose weight, myself. She knows both my husband an I went carnivore a couple months ago and we regularly share our health improvements. Great talk!

    So you think EDS and Lyme are not real??!! I had Lyme twice and it’s a spirochete infection that drills through tendons!! Being hyper mobile / EDS is horrible and debilitating that yes, it can be helped but it’s horribly real. It’s Unbelievable that you have said this!!

    • @dw7939
      @dw7939 4 місяці тому +7

      I have EDS too, autoimmune Dysautonomia and multiple serious autoimmune disorders, Mastocytosis. I get what you are saying but he was saying the patient with an eating disorder comes in and they have all these diagnosises but they themselves don't even know what they are. I've met people like this, they have EDS but zero hypermobility or dislocations, skin involvement or even vascular - none of the symptoms of any version of EDS just gut pain when they eat. So they don't eat.
      I don't think he meant EDS or Lyme isn't real, he meant a lot of natural drs assign this to everything when the real problem is body dysmorphia.
      Hope you are doing well, EDS is a beast. I had to stop a lot of Keto foods because they were too high histamine, I do a low carb low histamine diet now and feel much better. Keto isn't a cure for everything, that's for sure.

    A focus on weight in childhood, too often from the person's own parents (!!) either directly or snidely commenting on weight, then leaning into a low fat, lean diet - basically an horrific adherence to the SAD and gov't guidelines - puts them squarely into a space where the only option they can consider is to not eat at all. Ancel Keys etc. have a shitton to answer for... when I look into the fridges at friends and see low fat dairy everything, upf etc. it does my head in - as an adult, make your decisions, but feeding your children on a high carb, low fat diet is positively criminal.

Things dawned on me one day when my daughter exclaimed “how come you are the sickest person I know, yet you eat the healthiest diet?” I had no answer at the time, but it made me wake up and I began my journey to the carnivore way of eating.
