I was a nurse on a cardiac floor. That does not make me an expert. But in my experience, when it came to coronary artery blockage, you were at the brink of death before you had a symptom. At 25% blockage; no symptoms. At 50% blockage; no symptoms. At 75% blockage; no symptoms. A patient was not symptomatic until they were down to their last 10% and usually much less. So for the healthcare system to wait until a patient is symptomatic before authorizing a CAC sounds crazy. But it is NOT crazy. It is not about what is in the best interests of your health. It is about what is in the best interests of the health care system. There is no profit in early detection and prevention. It is not enough in life to do your job well. It is not enough to be a good spouse or parent. No. You have to take the time to learn every profession out there or you are going to get ripped off; not just your money but your health. When it comes to doctors, it is not that they were taught wrong. It is that they are too arrogant to not realize that what they think they know may be wrong.

They are trained that way. When pharma funds med schools they discourage any training that doesn't involve dispensing some drug. They don't make money if a doctor recommends lifestyle and dietary changes. So it isn't taught. Prevention isn't taught. Doctors are only trained to treat symptoms.

@raed.1883 YES.The owners of Big Harma are the biggest, most harmful cartel in the world. They also own or control banks, munitions, the media, education.
For such a cartel to exist, secrecy about their real doings is of paramount importance. They perfected that by always making sure the blame for their evil actions is lain on someone else.
In global affairs, they ensure, via their control of media, that we blame the politicians -- whom they control.
In medicine, they have us saying it's the doctors who are getting all the money. While there are definitely payouts, more control is exerted via threatening to pull licenses etc.

My pcp freaked out when my ldl cholesterol was 206. Wanted to out me on statin, I refused and asked for a CAC scan which insurance didnt cover. Had a score of 0. When asked him to explain the score to me, he was very upset that I knew what was going on.

What is your sd-LDL/APOB?/inflammation markers? My CAC score is 0, basic lipid panel perfect, stress test excellent, A1C normal. I ordered an advanced lipid profile/APOB on myself, and my sd LDL was high. My CIMT showed a 40 percent blocked L carotid with a vulnerable plaque. I am 58, athletic, perimenopause, eat organic- Mediterranean diet, normal BMI/ A1C/hs-CRP. I was shocked my L carotid was so blocked with vulnerable plaque, scary. I’m on Crestor 10 mg to stabile vulnerable plaque which is working, sd ldl dropped 50 percent and plaque stabilizing. Drs need to be ordering advanced lipid profiles, inflammation markers, OGTT, CIMT along with CAC especially earlier and definitely for women in peri and menopause. Complicated stuff and everybody is unique, definitely not a one size fits all approach.

Your 206 score is not a problem. People need to remind their doctors that in the 70's a score of 300 or more was the threshold. Gee, I wonder who lowered the score. It will leave your doctor speechless as it did mine - a 30 something year old.

You're not a Cardiologist. The most important thing you can do for your patients is send them for a Cardiac consult. Ask a Cardiologist, most everyone over 40 has asymptomatic CA calcification. You going to the cath lab with CA calcification and no symptoms? Answer that? I've seen a hundred caths go bad, the ol' hole in the heart. Furthermore, people with tight coronaries don't have MI's, they have stable angina and at worst an insidious decline in activity. Mi's are in people with loose plaques that break free--develop a test for that. And all basic chem panels have a non fasting glucose. There's your DM2 screening for the masses. I was a Cardio-thoracic anesthesiologist for over 20 years and I worked with cardiac patients day and night, literally. I've seen so many cath films and CT's, I see them in my sleep. You have no idea what you're talking about. I love your research, a personal letter.

    • @johnsonpaul1914

Animal protein is easily more digestible and available to the body than plant protein plus you can get the animal protein without all that carbs that most of us do not need that are in the plant proteins.

I practice in central Louisiana and have seen quite a number of my patients having success doing low carb, carnivore, or ketogenic diets. I’ve pulled so many of my patients off of statin medications, also.

    Brilliant video!
I had a recent appointment with a cardiologist from the leading cardiology practice in Tucson, AZ. I was expecting the cardiologist but he wasn't available for an audience, and was attended by a PA. I have been suffering from occasional bouts of orthostatic hypocardia. I received an echocardiogram a few weeks prior, and I was informed by the PA, the results were normal. I mentioned that I wasn't surprised (my age is 76) as I am on a keto diet. The PA immediately stated that the diet WILL kill me and since ldl was a few points above normal he was going to put me on statins. I immediately refused and told him that because of the diet I had reduced my A1C from 9.4 to 6 in 90 days. He stated that his wife was a diabetic and he wouldn't put her on a Keto diet. He then recommended a CAC test because he "knew" it would be very high and then I had better sign on to the statins or suffer the consequences. I signed up for the test as I had been contemplating getting tested. I also wrote the practice stating that I will no longer deal with their ignorant PAs and if I can't deal the a doctor, I'm going elsewhere. I received a confirmation that all future appointments would be with the doctor. My calcium test was done and my CAC was 10. I asked if there was anything that could reverse CAC scores and the doctor stated "No".
I researched reducing calcium build up and came across Vitamin K2-M7 and D3 regimes, and natto. I immediately started K2 supplements and high levels of D3 and 150 gms of natto daily. This was a few months ago. I signed up for the Lilly trial on AP(a). I had an initial blood test and a week later received a call saying that I didn't qualify because my AP(a) was so low it was unmeasurable and I needed 25+ for the trial! Keto? natto? Vitamin K and D3? Good Genes? I will retest my CAC after a year to see if, in fact, I have been able to reduce my CAC scores. I have been diagnosed Diabetic since 2008, and have been in a moderate to high level of therapeutic ketosis every day for the past 9 months. I do a daily ketone blood test. My morning fasting blood sugar test is high 40s to high 60s.
Our medical system is broken, our doctors are ignorant, Big Pharma and Big food have destroyed the health of the average citizen starting in the 70s. It's ironic that the Kalahari Bushmen still living a hunter gatherer lifestyle have dramatically lower rates of metabolic diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes...profit over people. Sugar kills more people than fentanyl! What a country.
    Totseins!

Mammograms are barbaric. Thermography is where it’s at. Much more effective and is safe, and can also be used for the whole body. And will point out other concerns as well. But you have to get someone that knows what they’re doing, and insurance does not cover it of course. I know two good practitioners in north Atlanta.

But towards the end, I stopped and many patients thought I was going to be responsible for their heart attack. I had my last mammogram in 1980 at age 29 after being educated by a very famous M.D. Anderson breast cancer expert about the dangers. I have no DNA markers and no family history of breast cancer. 17:31 Because the powers that be want us sick and weak. It's not about you or I, it's not about your doctors, it's about those above, the powers that be. They KNOW what causes what, and what doesn't cause what, they have infinite intimate knowledge about how the human body works, they know what causes disease and what cures it. It's all about money, power, and domination.
Oh, and if you think I mean that one small minority of people who suffered greatly during WWII, you're gravely mistaken, it goes well beyond them. There's a small handful of ultra powerful and influentual families that control everything. This isn't a conspiracy, it's abject reality.

I watched my baby sister die a few years ago. For years the family was trying to get her the mental care she needed along side her physical needs. She showed every sign of needing mental help to the point there were many doctors that, after taking all they could, refused to see her again. Each time we went into emergency, they put her in the psych part of the area and had someone assigned to watch her while they tried to figure out what was happening to her physically. And now she's been dead 4 years. My Mom is 87 and has COPD among other things. She has numerous doctors that she feels she needs to attend regularly, because if she doesn't they 'will fire her'. Of course she has a prescription list a mile long and she won't address her way of eating. So, we go regularly and they do what I call comfort care for her. She's a cash cow. I will die before I get mixed up with the "healthcare' provided now.

Either way, we're all going to die. But the question you need to ask yourself is how you want to die. In the clutches of this heinous health care industry, being tortured and treated like a rat in their lab experiment. While making these vile billionaires even more rich. Or taking your life, health, and well-being into your own hands and seeking out holistic practitioners that will keep you whole and healthy until it is your time to leave. I've chosen the latter. Stay healthy, my friend.

My mom died at 94 of multiple myeloma. I'll never forget how angry I was with her doctors for putting her on a low sodium diet when she was diagnosed at 84. Her blood pressure was like a teenager. She had been healthy her entire life. There is no association of sodium with multiple myeloma. She absolutely loved salt and she always salted her entire plate regardless of whether the food was already salted. She listened to her doctors. She insisted she had to do what they said so she spent the last 10 years of her life not enjoying her food.

Last year, I was hospitalized for covid/pneumonia with hypoxia and had several CTs of my chest. Reading the radiologists' findings, it noted there was calcification, but my lungs were clear. My PCP and Pulmonologist made no mention of the calcification. I have been on low carb for the last 2 years, am not diabetic, don't smoke, and have champagne on our anniversary and New Years Day. I've had 13+ surgeries and have chronic pain, fibromyalgia, muscle skeletal, DDD (degenerative disc disease) in spine and neck. I also have peripheral neuropathy in my feet due to a flu vaccine (Guillain Barre Syndrome & Bells Palsy twice) and upper respiratory infection. There was no mention from either doctor that the calcification result should be followed up with a CAC test. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, FOR BRINGING THIS TO OUR ATTENTION. I've been with my same doctor for 20+ years, and we have butted heads over keto/carnivore diet as she pushes "fork to table" also I believe I have Lipedema. I then got an angiogram and the found a 90% LAD block. They put me in the ICU over the weekend. Had a stent placed on Monday in SF Kaiser. Report sad 95% block. I could’ve died waiting for them. I was ready to pay for it outside of Kaiser but they finally did it in March. My PCP told me several years ago when putting me on a statin for total cholesterol >200 that all individuals over 45 should be on one. They are so good at regurgitating the narratives and not thinking for themselves. Oh, that right, their practice agreement prevents them from doing so. Standard of care or you’re fired.

I take all that stress for "standard of care" off of their shoulders by telling them that I am NOT going to take a statin. Period. End of story.
My (new) doctor predictably wanted to put me on a statin when she saw that my total cholesterol was 275 and the ldl was 187. I told her the ldl was nothing to worry about because my trigs were 60 and my hdl was 71 so the particles were nice and fluffy. She challenged me on that so I told her to get the particles sized. Unfortunately, she ordered the wrong test so I ended up getting another basic lipid panel. However, I told her that I wanted a CT scan and a CAC score and she agreed. I got it done at the end of April and it came back as a big, whopping, (drum roll, please) zero. that's right zero, zilch, nada. Not bad for a 65 year old sedentary woman who has had lousy eating habits for most of her life. I'm doing keto/carnivore and feeling far less brain fog than with the SAD way of eating and am planning on getting in 30 minutes of walking each day during the week. I don't worry about exercise on the weekends because I do several hours of yard work, washing cars, etc., each day. In short, I'm not changing how I'm eating unless there is something more compelling than my total cholesterol level.

All so sadly true! With following you for several years , and other drs in this space, I asked my PCP to refer a CAC score as she was constantly wanting to put me on a statin, regardless of my great HDL:trigylceride ratio of 1:1 (high TC:323), etc. She finally agreed only because I told her I was having a little chest pain....a lie,,,lol) and I also did my own NMR lipid panel to see what type of cholesterol I had. At age 69, they found an ascending aorta aneurysm on the CAC score, low score of 60 for CAC, and my NMR panel had all large fluffy LDLs and virtually no sd LDL's. So.....4 months later finally got a cardiologist appt this week, and thankfully I picked the right one! They will watch my aneurysm yearly, but he is not too alarmed yet, was happy with my NMR, and CAC score, and did NOT push the statins. Said I was at low risk, and to keep doing what I was doing. He even said the statins would "help" only by 1% at best and the decision to take a statin was entirely up to me....couldn't believe it! So happy with him, and I'm still a work in progress, but no longer prediabetic, many pounds down, and enjoying the simple life of carnivore. Thank you so much Dr Cywes for what you do!

I'm 77 and been on a very low carb diet for several years. Weight and blood pressure are excellent. Dr Berry published info about a database listing physicians who understand keto. There is not one in my state! And I'm willing to drive for hours to get to a decent doctor. Dr Berry isn't seeing patients or I'd be sitting in his office right now.
Thank you Dr Cywess for all the information you provide.

I'm 73, and got a CAC because of UA-cam... it cost me about $100 in Pennsylvania. My insurance, nor medicaid covered it.
My score was 1. My cholesterol was high because of my keto diet. They feaked out, and I got ordered all kind of scans amad tests. My arteries are clear.... but they still pushed statins, big time.
I refused. They were aghast.... how could I?
I get better medical advice from UA-cam than I do from my F'n useless PCP.... I'm in search of another doc.
The medical system I'm involved with now Is completely profit driven. I see specialists for issues I'm concerened about, get blown off. I ask question, request info the average man on thr street would never ask a doc. Again, theyre stunned...
So far the only one who listened wwas a young nurse practitioneer. She listened. We exchanged more questions. But in the end, she encouraged that I take statins.
Meanwhile, I ride bicycle, hit the gym, work hard in my yard, don't smoke, only a drink or two per week...
I'm sticking with the keto diet. I've never had a diet that actually makes me feel good.

You want to drop your cholesterol like a rock, start taking pregnenolone, the precursor for the hormones in your body. What does your body make the hormones out of? Cholesterol, the stuff our bodies use pregnenolone to make hormones, to heal tissue damage. As we get older, we do not make as much pregnenolone as we did in our teens and twenties. Statins poison your liver to make cholesterol and is helping you out of life by stopping you turning the cholesterol into hormones. The body is very good at getting rid of too much pregnenolone. Take it early in the day, it is an antagonist of mellitonine.

My score came back at 0 and my PCP still recommended I get back on a statin. Things started working for me in taking control of my diabetes and I will never take a statin ever again.

Great video! My intelligent and non-alarmist PCP recommended and ordered a CAC test immediately when I showed him my elevated LDL-C profile. He used it as a baseline / screening tool. He also went on the explain that a high CAC score alone doesn’t matter much if the blood is still flowing through your coronary arteries over a certain percentage (measured using Fractional Flow Rate or FFR). He also explained that collateral arteries can sometimes circumvent a blockage. The out of pocket / self pay costs for a CAC test without contrast in my area is about $130. CAC test with contrast, about $250. It takes less than 20 minutes. Results / radiology report the next day. In my opinion, a CAC test is a very good, relatively inexpensive, non-invasive first step to see what needs your attention to reduce further risk of CVD.

i was , a few decades back, a pacemaker rep , for about eight years, in between other jobs I would perform , often in OR's. ( as Surgical assistant ) . When I went to a cardiologist's office for a meet, I got to observe patients coming in, with clear plastic bags full of meds. They were shuffling , old and weak. My pacemaker was about to give them that extra energy, with many programmable options for each type and specific interests . Well, I rarely got to keep up with patients that got a pacemaker, but I heard, statistics wise, many would die of a natural death, within a year, with or without a pacemaker. That was one ethical wake-up call for me. I can say I felt gratified, helping a cardiologist or a surgeon to implant a pacemaker in a baby born with heartblock, who would have had no chance to survive without a pacemaker. I met a young woman who had one since her infancy, and of course, had the battery replaced a couple of times, but she was alive and well. That was heart warming. The poor old people who were close to death, anyway, could have easily missed an implant. As I look back,. I see the medical establishment, providing services that may not always be necessary or even useful. That is my personal opinion. One more thing, I feel like mentioning. One of these hospital chains I worked for, as an OR/assistant , made it to the Forbes list. Shock !!!! Non -profit ? Nope !!!! The CEO's make over a mil a year; the patients are now clients and the employees are associates, like the Walmart people. Hospitals are now, corporations for profit ! Trauma centers are still , officially non profit. That is our only real, humanity type of services, not asking questions about insurance or financial coverage. They just save lives. So far, so good.........

Dr. Cywes, after hearing your interview with Dr. Ford Brewer and listening to this video, I shelved my statin and had a big T-bone steak last night in your honor. My cardiologist put me on 10 mg Crestor last July (2023), and we needed a new PCP out here and selected an internist nearby. He promptly doubled the dosage to 20mg rosuvastatin. I have been experiencing cognitive difficulties, fishing for names and such, and my quads have shrunken noticeably, and this new info clinched it; I'm experimenting with a statin hiatus. As far as diet, we have always eaten a good deal of meat. A standard plate is a meat and two vegetables, mostly low in simple carbs. We grow our own onions, lettuce, yellow squash, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, Capsicum peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers. I take an aspirin a day and also nattokinase.

I have experienced first hand that many doctors are only concerned with their income and reaching hospital quotas for surgeries. Yes, if a Dr/surgeon is affiliated with a hospital they have to reach surgery quotas.
I once went to see a gynecologist who told me I had to be operated on the next day, because of an ovarian cyst, which was rather large. But it wasn’t the first large ovarian cyst I had. This butcher told me I had to be cut open in order to remove the cyst because I could die the next day if I didn’t. He was quite forceful, trying to convince me for scheduling the surgery right there and then.
I thanked him, and said no, thank you. I then proceeded to schedule another ultrasound for one week later. During the ultrasound the technician told me; I’m not allowed to give you any information, but I will tell you that your cyst has shrunk almost half from where it was last week.
This time around no hospital made money on my malfunctioning body.
    When I was experiencing my
first rather large and painful ovarian cyst, my Dr. did a simple outpatient procedure where she drove a large needle into the cyst, straight through the skin, assisted with an ultrasound to help her guide the needle, and she simply sucked the pus out of it. My body did not need to be cut open.

Last year, my husband and I, both age 68, cut our carb consumption by 80-90% (no pasta, no corn, no potatoes, no cereal, up to 2 slices of whole wheat bread a week, etc.). We actually went on a Mexican Food Diet and ate tacos, tostadas, enchiladas, and other Mexican dishes that only used fried or baked corn tortillas. We didn't stint with our toppings either - we had cheese, avocados, sour cream along with lettuce, tomatoes, pico de gallo, and hot sauce. We usually had refried beans with a bit of bacon grease and ground cumin in them and sometimes we had Mexican rice. At the same time, we started going to the YMCA three times a week for 45-60 minutes. I HATE EXERCISING, but I did 2 miles on the recumbent bicycle and 2 miles on the treadmill - I didn't push myself and barely broke a sweat. In 4 months, I lost 21 lbs. and my husband, who exercised much harder than I did, lost 16 lbs. We both felt SO MUCH BETTER when NOT eating carbs and getting some exercise.

Some insurances will cover it, some won't (or only in certain situations). You can often just pay for it, but should first ask how much it costs out of pocket. Some facilities especially hospitals charge a ton for any kind of imaging. Not sure why a doctor would "refuse to order" as it's not an invasive or particularly risky test.

It’s appalling what one has to deal with in the US to get a basic picture of their true health status. My PCP refused to order a glucose tolerance test for me, even though I told him I have all the symptoms of insulin resistance. He said my fasting blood sugar was fine (though it’s always on the high end or slightly over the “normal” ranges and my mother dies of diabetes.)

SAME! I swear, in this country if you're not diabetic you need to be pregnant before they'll actually give you one as part of a routine screening! And since that's not in the cards right now, I'm just hoping the first doctor I found who doesn't invalidate or gaslight me about my metabolic concerns because I'm not diabetic (perhaps in a doctor's mind, more like not yet) will keep taking my concerns seriously. When someone really struggles to lose weight, has acne, gets sick all the time, etc, even if they have normal blood sugar (thank you, not eating sugar and aiming for low carb as a default) and blood pressure, that's still a health concern that should be taken seriously. I feel like, as this video shows, if you're not showing the most obvious, emergency room symptoms or extreme test results, doctors will just let you keep wandering to the edge of that metabolic cliff until you fall off and they try to patch you up.

Fasting blood sugar is meaningless if it take 5 times the normal amount of insulin to achieve it. Drs need to be doing fasting insulin tests, not the pretty much worthless A1C

Amen - preach. Everyone must learn and understand this. Frustrating, I try to assist my family, they just don’t want to hear it.

Correlation is not causation. Trying to lower markers without evaluating the rest of the patient is the medical profession failing us.
I'm a 69 year old woman who hasn't seen a doctor in many years. I am on what I call a very low carb diet - no grains, beans, or starchy vegetables. I monitor nothing, eat OMAD. This is very sustainable for me.

Thanks to you and doctors like you here on UA-cam, I got a CAC test,(through Kaiser in CA no less). I went with my husband to our PCP and told him I wanted my husband off the statins, but thought he should get the CAC test. The doctor agreed and husband had a score of 10. Mine was 0. I’m grateful to have a doctor who, while he didn’t suggest the CAC test, he was completely open to both of us having it done. I’m even more grateful to the outstanding doctors on UA-cam I’ve been listening to who know the importance of this test and share this vital information!

I have a great doctor. Our health insurance won't pay for it, but she ordered it because of the heart disease history in our family. I got it done and my score was low, but now I know it's there and thanks, Dr Cywes, I know what to do about it. I can remember the same scenario with pap smears in the 1980s and feeling the same way--why not????? They were not covered for a long time but now they are. And how many lives lost to the almighty god Big Bucks, profit above all.

I'm currently reading about women in the 1600's incidently they were called the weaker vessel back then and the health care available in the UK then. It was appalling I wonder how history will judge our current healthcare and whether they will suspend belief about how we treated each other when tests were available to cure illness.

I, so agree with you about about pcp's,even my cardiologists that is all they do is prescribe statins,Elicust, and blood pressure. In the past I have been diagnosed with a-fib, and Anterior Infirior Ischemia and angina. I'm still trying to live an active life as if I was 40 like bike riding, some golf, swimming. I'm probably in denial though, because I told them many times I get chest startling pains. They are never concerned saying that's not heart but no one knows what it is. I'm 71 years old however and perhaps I should accept the fact that it's just all over for me. Sure wanted to be around for 20 more. Joe Lake Havasu, AZ.

Joseph, don't give up on yourself. Live everyday to it's fullest and and enjoy the life you live.
I've had mitral valve prolapse and occasional tachycardia since age 16. My pediatrician told my mother nothing will fix it but a transplant. All my adult life Drs have tried to 'fix' my heart with various pharmaceuticals. The side effects were awful. Although I have other health issues I'm not on meds but take supplements and eat low carb.
The point is Live Your Best Life! You never know what will happen tomorrow. May you be blessed with waking each morning and embracing the day!

My doctor had to trick the insurance company to get my CT scan. I’m 70 and an ex smoker but I quit smoking 14 years earlier and the insurance cut off was 10 years. So I had to fib and say I don’t only quit smoking for 10 years to get the insurance to pay for the test. I didn’t get my CAC score but they said there was some plaque. That’s all I was told about the test. Man, our healthcare sucks. Thanks for all your good information.
