- Rise of the Triad is a first-person shooter (FPS) that Interceptor Entertainment is developing for Apogee Software, released for Steam and GOG.com on 31 July 2013. During a demonstration at QuakeCon 2012, the developers indicated that the game is a revival of the earlier Rise of the Triad, which 3D Realms published as Apogee Software Ltd. in 1995.
The Plot is identical to that of ROTT: Dark War; A team of special operatives, known as the H.U.N.T. (High-risk United Nations Task-force) is sent to San Nicolas Island to investigate deadly cult activity taking place in an ancient monastery. Their boat, the only way back, is destroyed by patrols, and the team soon learns that the cult plans to systematically destroy nearby Los Angeles. The operatives, now unable to return whence they came, are then left to fight their way into the monastery on the island, and eventually put a stop to the cult's activities. - Ігри
GmanLives seems to age in reverse: he seems far more mature and less obnoxious in this video which is almost 9 years old now. He doesn't stretch his "shieeet" for three weeks like he does in his more recent video.
Well the original ROTT had unlimited pistol and machine gun bullets as well. I think the reload animation was just there to trick people, it also caught me off guard sometimes as well.
Actually, Rise of the Triad doesn't feel like the original that much. The original is more in line with Wolfenstein 3D, while the new one is more in line with Quake.

I never played the original ROTT, but playing this currently and loving it. I do love old school shooters and the level design in this is quite great.

The best thing about ROTT always was its amazing music. Both the original MIDI version and the Metal soundtrack (by the Legends Andrew Hulshult, Lee Jackson & Bobby Prince) of the remake is unparalleled in its epic franticness and unique character 😍
I had good fun with this game's multiplayer. I love Quake III Arena styled deathmatch games. More developers need to have FFA DM like this.

The original stuff of Rise Of The Triad (retro one and 2013 one), is the platform parts, with bounce, spikes, fire....you don't have so much that in the new fps. It's not hard to play it and it's very fun :)

I just finished it a few hours ago, and that was truly one of the most bizarre experiences I've played. Most likely the weirdest FPS I've ever seen. I've played the original a bit, but this one I played to completion. This gameplay style really broke the mold from Pre-Half-Life FPSes. There's a general style you expect from those games like Doom, Quake, Duke-Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, Redneck Rampage, etc. However, Rise of the Triad plays so differently from them. Strange to think of an over-the-top crazy FPS in the 90s that had a weapon limit. Either version can't go forgotten.
Also, it looks like Rise of the Triad: Dark War is pretty dang close to what Tom Hall initially pitched for his vision of Doom. It even uses some of the characters he planned (or at least their names) and gives different gameplay stats to each of them.

A german UA-camr called "Altf4Games" was part of the development. He is a well known game reviewer and knows pretty much everything about games.
This was a really weird game to remake. It feels like they were scraping the bottom of the nostalgia barrel. What's next, Blake Stone?

The monks seem related to the cultists in Blood
The performance issues are due to texture streaming and can be turned off by tweaking the config files, its easy and a tutorial is posted up in the games steam forum, so ignore that complaint.
Quicksaving has been in the game since october, it wasnt at release but the dev decided to patch the featre in, so ignore that complaint as well
finally to all watching this wonderig how the game is like, you should know that the reviewer is in the minority in his opinion, that many love this game including myself and the vast majority of customer reviews on the steam store page agree this. So you should also take that into consideration.

It's not very fun, the gunplay isn't all that good, and like he said - if you're not a fan of the original, this game isn't going to be very fun for you. You're in the minority if you LIKE this game. Period.

Pretty fair review, for some reason I knew this game was going to have performance issues...Really hope they get patched up quickly and more single player content is created either by the devs or modders.
I've been keeping track of Interceptor for a little bit at least. I know they were working on Duke Nukem Reloaded, but I thought Gearbox revoked the rights or something?
They've patched and fixed so much with this game since release. Most of these criticisms aren't valid anymore, to anyone watching this.

Played it a few days ago, it's still buggy as hell, gunplay is subpar and overall gameplay is just really dated.
That's good, because I want to play this game. I have a Mac currently so at the moment I can't, but I plan to switch back to Windows for my daily computing needs, and once I do, I want to buy this game and play it as I loved the original ROTT and I still do love it. I've been using a Mac since 2010, even though I knew about this remake in 2013 I of course couldn't play it.
It still feels janky, but nothing terrible. Performance issues should not arise with todays hardware and the shooting feels very satisfying. Recommended game!
While this may not be a really awesome game, but it is a perfect to follow when "reviving" classic FPS
In my opinion as someone who's only experience with the original RoTT was playing a few seconds of a port of the first level on a psp before realising that it's no way to play an FPS game also I'm not the type of person to play through and entire game just because it's new to me so I tend to play a level or 2 before taking a break. I liked this game quite a bit, there's not really much else I can say that others haven't. I simply have had a fair bit of fun with the game and I look forward to playing it some more. I believe I liked it more because I didn't have any expectations from it so it couldn't really let me down (though other games have when I had the same mind set) I can understand if people like it or don't like it but I personally liked it.
I know this is kinda weird but I had a much easier time playing the game on medium detail settings due to a weaker GPU at the time which took away the super glossy look to everything and made it much easier to spot enemies. I'm trying to play this game now on a GTX 1660S and now I feel like I can't see shit with all the contrasty gloss everywhere!

I haven’t thought of ROTT since I beat the original so many years ago. I like that some developers are trying to bring a bit of nostalgia for us long time gamers. Unfortunately being that we played and loved the originals it makes us very harsh if they don’t get it perfect in our eyes. Kind of like those that read comics or fantasy series books devoutly and then go to see a modern rendering of the book as a movie. Our imagination and knowledge makes it hard not to call bullshit on some aspects.
You nailed all my qualms with this game. The latest update optimised blood and particle effects which cleared up a lot of my performance problems (finally, after 8 months), but Interceptor's creation clearly falls short in so many ways.
Now where is that message "WTF!!! Don't shoot the dogs!!!"?
i like the level design its so nonlinear compared to modern shooters, i wish design that keeps you exploring and thinking AND rewards you for it comes back.
And then, 6 years after this comment, we now have Dusk, Amid Evil, and Ion Fury. The golden age has returned.
@@deadturret4049 yes ive been playing both ion fury, blood fresh supply and the new Dooms and wolfensteins (well at least order and collossus) and now halo all of that classic trilogy is comming so its just great to be a gamer to me that likes old games n stuff. But i miss Duke Nukem yes the 20th anniversary (5th episode) it was alright but i really wanna see a funny actionpacked shooter with duke nukem.
well 3d reloaded was put on hold by gearbox because they new 3d reloaded was better that forever and sales would of got effected because 3d reloaded was going to be free.

I played the the shareware version when the game first came out way back when. Then my friend some how got ahold of the full version and I was a happy little kid for weeks. What a blast!!! It was so hard but the flying eyeballs, cool weapons, gore, all of it was the best! I enjoyed the remake but not nearly like the original, though GMAN nails it... the developers did capture the original in the remake.

Already released, it ended up being that 20th anniversary world tour edition, or whatever it was called. Kind of overpriced as they didn't do a lot of updating but still fun and you get a new episode.
Interceptor had nothing to do with that. Their actual project (duke nukem reloaded) got canned due to gearbox not wanting them to release it. Although yeah 3D world tour and megaton edition would be the way to go instead.
The new one did have quick saves.... so you COULD save any time you like. But if you quit the game it'd load from a checkpoint.
Original ROTT was kinda doomed (npi) from the start. They were given the wolf3d technology and told to make a sequel while Id worked on the far more advanced DOOM. Considering this they made a decent engine. My main complaint was the levels were super repetitive and didn't look like anything even close to real world environments, just super bland mazes. This sequel seems fun considering the source material.
I liked the game very much but the mazes were insane. That plagued nearly every early to mid 90s fps. I think I never finished some fps because I could not find a way out. It was incredibly annoying. I tried Strife - a game I wanted badly as a kid - recently and the shitty maze all over again. I gave up. Fortunately since DN3D they tried to make games more lineral.

Will probably give this game a try when they have patched it up. I havent played the original but i believe i will get my moneys worth just for the sake of variation compared to other contemporary first person shooters.The checkpoint system does sound like a big pain in the ass though.

Usually when I hear the term 'Remake', I immediately die a little inside as it's seldom anywhere near what the original was like (Hot Pursuit being the worst offender for me). When I heard that one of my old games that, although wasn't my favourite, was being remade, all I could think was 'They are going to screw this up major.'. Fortunately, I was wrong. =)
It's plus sides I think more than outweigh it's cons (though it definitely has them), it is fairly faithful to it's roots, which was not so much about the story as 'I wanna blow shit up' and to that it even keeps the ludicrous gibs from the original (and those fucking annoying spinning death traps). The main differences I would say is that this is a lot harder than the original, and it has what I can only describe as a Battleblock Theatre mentality of trolling the living crap out of you (especailly if you've played levels made by douches like myself. Checkpoint right there? Ball of yarn? How about a fake block just before it hiding spikes? Maybe this is karma finally getting me back for this?). It (mostely) does give you clues as to what ass-hattery is about to go down, but more often than not it's just the little things that make you say 'Dick move game!' and carry on. It's almost akin to being taken out for a lovely meal of satisfying explosions and eyes sliding down the camera before taking you back to it's place and suddenly fucking you in the ass. Much butthurt.
The only real problems I have with this game is that the last levels with those fireball launching gits are way too difficult and take way too much damage for people in robes.
I also got stuck on scenery quite a lot, especially when trying to get to secret areas. I don't know what the gameplay was like pre-updates, but whatever it was seems to have been fixed for the most part.
Although you don't need to have played the original, it's certainly better if you did. Especially if you manage to find the secret levels and are wondering why the graphics turned to shit, and if you're wondering why the hell you've randomly turned into an uberly powerful dog. (The bark is certainly worse then it's bite, but I wouldn't wanna fuck with that either.)
The NME boss is also hard as hell but I think there is a way to beat him that doesn't involve flat out luck that I didn't manage to figure out. (Hint: If you manage ti get the Firebomb in that level, or carry one through the previous one, for the love of god save it! Takes out half of his health if you get him properly, Then you just gotta worry about his rapid firing homing missiles....good luck with that.)
AND THEY NERFED THE FLAMEWALL!!!! THAT WAS MY FAVOURITE WEAPON DAMNIT!!! That thing used to only have the one shooting option, but if you hit something with it, it was dead. Perfect crowd control now having to be taken care of by the rarer Firebomb weapon.
All in all I don't even wanna know what this game is like on the hardest difficulty (It might not be Dark Souls but still, damn.), but I would like to point out that the main criticism that gets me that this game recieves appears to be from people taking it too seriously. It is not a serious game. It's a blood orgy based on the gore of Doom (slightly ramped), and the setting of Wolfenstien (minus the nazis). It's only purpose is to be comical and let people get their gun off, and is definitely a game I'd reccomend, especially after playing a serious game that may have left you with a crap ending, and it's certainly a welcome change of pace to other fps games that try to lure you in with a story (that often fails in modern games. What's that? You wanted me to feel for the character that just died? The only reason why he lived that long is because you wouldn't let me kill him beforehand.).
I'd give it an 7/10, it's something I'd like to see more people play. Even if it's just to see them panic at the traps and rage in the later levels. You did good Apogee, you did good. =)
On a side note. Fuck you Dopefish! You killed me more than every other enemy COMBINED in Commander Keen 4! (I sucked at that level so badly, it's embarrassing.) I thought I had escaped you, but NOOOOOOO you had to come back. Taunting me, making me remember how many pissing times you got me. You are the underwater level that I will never miss. Should've let that fucker drown and be done with it, screw saving the world.
I don't like the original..I do like playing this one though. Well, aside from the platforming puzzles. Also, so glad they put in quicksaves.

Warner Bros owns the IP, yes. However, back when Blood was originally released, Monolith sold the publishing rights to GT Interactive who was bought by Atari in 1999, making Atari the owners of publishing rights for Blood.
IDK I really liked the original rott. It had a lot of unique ideas, and was just fun shooting crap. giant open rooms with gauntlets of guys. Bounce pads, fire ball shooters. Tons and tons of stuff in a huge open rooms. It was just fun to play. The music was fantastic too. Still one of my favorites, but I prefer the original game.

I really love this game, but it didn't feel that much like the original to me. And that is a GOOD thing! The original wasn't bad but the 40+ square meter maps and the maze like stuff just put me off too much. I played maybe 3 levels and never touched it again. This game feels more like duke 3D or something than the original rott and I love it for it. Something I still play a lot to this day. Plus with sweet fx it looks really good.
For the performance issues I blame the UDK. Yes this was an unreal engine 3 title but it used the UDK, you just cannot optimize with the UDK the way you can if you license the full engine. It limits you to using two cores, and unreal script that is converted into c++ for the engine to use instead of coding it to use however many you see fit and allowing low level C++ to really optimize. I can max it no problem, but I really think it would have been better if it had used to full unreal engine 3 instead of the udk.

I never played the original but I thought this version was great, it felt a bit broken and was optimised like a brick in a blender but the gameplay, ability to rocket jump and viseral, really fast combat felt refreshing compared to the new shooters.
More games need a Dog mode
machine games should reboot it in the idtech7 engine and tie it into their expanded wolfenstein universe and bring back the syfy fantasy elements of the original games.

I disagree . As a child of the 90s, this was one of my favorite fps along with doom, quake, etc.. and would always ask my classmates if they heard of rise of the triad. I reefer going to PC convention with my dad and buying this game on 10 floppy diskettes 😅 I feel if someone's never played the original they won't have the same feeling about this game. Def gonma give it a try now that I know there's a remake of it out
I too think your review for this game is BAD. The 1.4 patch fixed most of the optimization problems and even though it uses checkpoints, you Can quick save and quick load at any time and it's a true quick save, saving exactly where you are instead of just saving from the beginning of the last checkpoint. To the contrary, I think new gamers will love this game so much it will make them interested in the original. No need to have played the original to get into this game.. the reviewer is way off the mark here.

The original ROTT I loved (especially with extra gore cheat code)....but I do remember being confused as fuck trying to figure what the fuck to do. As well as just basic diziness from jumping around everywhere.....I loved the weaspons though.
I wish Bethesda or id Software would acquire the rights to ROTT. Not only because I think they could do better, but because of ROTT's connections to Wolfenstein.
Certainly is not a bad remake, in fact in some areas rally shines but as you mentioned poor QC screws the perfomance, asl in some areas the graphics are straight ugly.
To think that game (re)launched the boomer shooter trend and that everybody panned it back then, is kinda ironic.

The original ROTT was far from sub-par. It was just released at the wrong time (after DooM) so it didn't get nearly as much attention. Yet it offered many more gameplay elements, it was harder as a whole and more innovative in many more aspects. Doom had all the cutting edge tech for its time but ROTT did more with much, much less.
ROTT was shit. plain and simple.
first FPS to have room over room and rocket jumping moving platforms and Player selection. Doom is a solid game but ROTT innovated.
I personally think the original ROTT was better than DOOM, to me it looks more realistic and I just found it far more entertaining. I like DOOM, don't get me wrong, but I prefer ROTT.

Return of the Triad was, by my opinion, a very fun TC using the Zdoom engine. Based upon this review I would rather play that instead.

I liked the original and I liked the new one. It is a dumb shooter and it pretends nothing otherwise. If you re-brand / re-image / remake an old game, it must have major elements of the old one, which they incorporate. If you compare this with Shadow Warrior 2013, they did a far better job. The only drawback for me where the boss levels (too hard) and the jumping maps.
Wow this looks even worse than the original game. I like a lot of 90s shooters, but they weren't all great. I've never been able to play ROTT (the original DOS one) past a level or two at a time because the game is so boring. Yes, it's got some wacky features that are funny and a great soundtrack, but the former is a novelty, and the latter isn't worth going through the levels for alone. The level design is just boring, confusing, and primitive, being a Wolf 3D clone, and the game was dated even when it was new since Doom had already come out and blown everyone away with what it could do. I enjoy playing Wolf 3D honestly more than ROTT, because I've beaten that game a couple of times.
I honestly don't get the point of a remake being so faithful. Surely the entire point is to keep a similar vibe, but to update it to contemporary standards? Doom's reboots, both in Doom 3 and Doom 2016 did a way better job of updating and re-imagining the original, feeling faithful yet not a copy/paste living in the original's shadow. They stand on their own even if you've never played the originals.
I loved the original, while acknowledging it wasn't great, and this game was a sore insult to the source material. A technical failure, it also seemed to take the silliness of the original to translate into obnoxious behavior and crudity at every turn. I predicted when this came out that people would falsely attribute its low quality to the design of 90s shooters, and that has mostly been the case. I regret the time I spent with this release.

The main thing that turned me off from this game is the art direction and graphics, which are pretty boring and uninspired.
ROTT 2013 had little to do with the original DOS classic FPS game from the 1990s in my humble opinion. The 2013 version is just a 'pseudo-remake' and basically a very generic shooter with mediocre graphics and gameplay. Fair enough, there are some parts in the 2013 game that really pleases the fans of the original game such as the possibility to select the original soundtrack and the characters, too. Most of the all other stuff is just utter mumbo jumbo from the new developers, for example, the horrid level design in later levels and those annoying platforming sequences in every single episode. Boss fights are pretty unfair, too, most of the bosses just have all too long life bars - or player's arsenal is just too weak throughout the game.
Gameplay is somehow flawed; it is in some way unbalanced with those pinpoint accuracy enemies who gun you down quickly. So there's not much pleasure of playing the game on higher difficulties because of constant dying and loading. Before patches, there was no option for quicksaving! Luckily, they fixed that pretty early.
In the original game there were some very unlike and peculiar options considering the quicksaving itself. Namely, if you had quicksaved your game by mistake in some crappy situation, there's always an option to restore the last quicksave by pressing SHIFT+F6 if I recall correctly :) I haven't since that ever seen that kind of option in any game.
