The fact that a single NPC can have 3 different artstyle approaches on their body is fucking with my head. They'll have a cartoonish face, a semi-detailed but still stylised jacket with minor details, and a photoreal undershirt with visible stitching, all on top of a low poly model with a misaligned skeleton. And then, to top it off, some of those textures will have the deep shadows (eg; around the pockets) "painted" on, but without any sort of bump mapping so that the simulated world lighting will just hit everything with a flat sheen, making it look like one of those funny shirts with a tuxedo printed onto it. And THEN, sometimes things WILL have bump mapping, BUT the specular and reflectiveness settings are the same across what should be leather and what should be cotton. It's unbelievable that a company who made £1 billion in under 3 days could allow this to go on sale.
Rockstar isn’t the same awesome third party company that it used to be back in the early 2000s. It’s just sad that they’re no longer making any original IP games that they use to make. Now looking and playing the definitive version of Sam Andreas just shows that Rockstar didn’t put any effort in these classic games. Seriously it makes the ps2 and Xbox version of those games look like a masterpiece in comparison.
@Spawn Yes, but we're talking about the most successful entertainment franchise in history. They can afford it. The only reason any track shouldn't be in here is if the original artists don't want their songs in anymore. Take 2 are just cheapskates all round.
I get what youre saying but take two may as well have infinite money, the impact of shelling out a billion dollars for a soundtrack probably doesnt even register, but they dont care. They just wanted to cash in on this trend of remakes and re-releases in the laziest and lowest effort way possible
@@MrSnaztastic i can understand a few things like Michael Jackson not making it, but so many of these cut songs should be more than affordable for this big of a company
You could call it "a Blizzard" as much as you could call it "a From Software", or "a Bethesda", or "a Square Enix", to be fair. This studio ( not rockstar ) of literal 10 people were expected to remaster three games in 6 months. Seriously that’s a crime. No one can do that. Rockstar parent company really did it for the cash grab. It was a easy cash grab. Exploiting nostalgia. The og devs are quitting because of this. They have no power. They can watch but with no say.
yeah, honestly they should've actually gotten R* Dundee to lead this remaster like they were boasting about in a few articles instead of pushing everything onto this small-time studio.
I still don't know why they didn't do something like release one remastered game every 12-18 months rather than rushing to cobble together three massive failures, they'd of made way more money if these were actually good remasters...
Jesus Christ cheer up ya miserable bastards 😂 they did a good job imo, better than you could've done I don't see you lot trying to remaster these games, I'm just happy to play these games again with enhanced graphics sure it wasn't perfect but what game is? There's always something people will complain about 😂
Agree. Grove Street Games did an awful job but it was on Rockstar as a publisher to hit the brakes and not release that pile of shit we have now. Now that Grove Street Games is pulled from the remaster, we can't expect any more updates for these games.
Its not even a rain effect, it's the default content example for particles with collision that comes with the engine, they just scaled it up on every dimension and attached it to the the root of the player camera so it follows you around. It's pathetic because it looks like it rotates with the camera so they were too lazy to even separate the rotation when they attached it to the camera. Not even joking, this is the same half assed attempt at rain I made when I had like 2 weeks of experience with the engine. Like this is alarmingly amateurish for a company with this kind of money,
@@Litevaar YES! I mean, I worked with Unity for a few weeks as well! It's the same shit I've done. It was around 2014 so I really don't remember much about it. But yes. That's exactly what you said.
The definitive edition is exactly why people don't like the look of those off-hand projects of "Old game X in Unreal" because it has all these pseudo-realistic effects over cartoony aesthetics and they just clash in a surreal way and destroys what made it's appearance iconic.
It honestly does look like one of those unity asset flip games. Cheap plastic against decent lighting or over done lighting and bad use of particle effects.
@@pnutz_2 I mean, even at that, I would have expected it to look better than this! It's like they couldn't decide between high fidelity graphics and the style of the original, so it just comes out looking like a mess.
I saw the gameplay footage before I knew it was an official release, I genuinely thought it was one of those cringy mods where someone just makes everything wet and reflective
In my head, GTA never looked "Realistic" untill 4. I always viewed it like an MTV cartoon in the style of something like Aeon Flux and thought China Town Wars really capitalized on that aesthetic. It seems the "Definitive" edition tried to make these toony chars look realistic like the newer games and it failed hard. Clearly the AI was turned to "realism" and not "stylized" lmfao.
the moment I saw that they used the wrong logo for a radio station in the radio wheel I knew this was going to be bad. It's such a simple thing to fix and I noticed it 30 seconds into GTA3 yet they couldn't be bothered. Really shows the amount of care that went into this. I'm glad I still own copies of the originals on multiple platforms.
Funniest part is that Grove Street Games is the same company that made the XBox 360 port of San Andreas, which was a technical mess and used a version of the IOS port. This still used it too, still having assets in the files for Mobile buttons.
The reason they removed it from the Rockstar launcher is actually because some modders figured out the games are literally just the Renderware originals running on top of Unreal, plus these *adjustments*. The same code, same leftovers, same archives, even the disabled Hot Coffee code, it's all there. You have the very same old bugs and glitches, not a single one corrected, with new ones added by this porting process. Most of the actual porting was clearly done with automatic tools, like they literally just applied some AI upscale filter on most textures, you can find artifacts and everything. Except it was all left unprotected so Grove Street Games accidentally handed them the source code for all three games. It's a disaster.
Not me!!!! I flipped rockstar off and never played It knowing It was going to be a disaster. Not saying I’m better than anyone I’m just one of the people that got tired of being handed garbage from lazy ass devs.
They used AI to finish up most of the models. That’s why they look so soulless, because you were right. They literally just didn’t care. I’m terrified to see what they’ll do to RDR1 now.
I’m actually playing RDR1 on XBSX, and I think it really doesn’t need a remaster at all specially remasters like this that deletes contents and mess up most things

A RDR1 remaster should only be graphics update from the RDR1 original graphics to the RDR2 since both games uses a version of the same RAGE engine. Anything else is just asking for trouble
The state they released these games in is EXACTLY what Rockstar thinks of their fanbase. If they really had any respect for their fans then there would've been some serious quality control instead of out sourcing the entire thing and calling it a day.
With how much GTA V and RDR2 made for Rockstar, they can't say they didn't have the means to hire a better team or even license the old songs. Modders usually fix a broken game within 24 hours or improve a game dramatically in a few weeks, so companies don't bother putting in the effort.
There's this trend now of mistaking low polycounts and low texture resolutions for being cartoony. GTA had a realistic sense to it, and the character models were more like caricatures than cartoons.

So fn annoying that xbox users are stuck with these garbage versions or that garbage mobile port of San andres that they replaced the og xbox version with.
like any other industry: greed will be the death of it. these games came out just before corporations realized just how profitable video games are, since that realization it has been a crap shoot as to if you're going to get a worthwhile game or not. I find this remaster trend gaming's version of Hollywood remaking old classics into huge disappointments, it also signals that a lot of the film and development studios are creatively bankrupted due to the current over-supply in both forms of media.
tbf vice city is the best one out of the three. i had nothing to complain about 🤷🏼♀️ doesn't feel much different to the original except for smoother gameplay. but i had not much to complain about the others as well, just a few songs i was missing but that doesn't really take away from the gameplay fun for me. sorry but people need to understand that it will never be as charming as the first time you play through a game, especially if it's such a long time ago. ppl just set their expectations to high imo..
@JackyBandicoot subjective. Majority of people love san andreas as the best. Even sold way more than vice. Both great regardless but even the memes online all centred around CJ. Prob the most popular and well known rockstar main character. And not surprised.
I love the point you made about aesthetics vs. tech spec graphics. Older games can still look appealing even now due to their art direction & aesthetics even if they're dated tech wise.
In the past: you make do with that you have, even if it werent top notch graphics, you made it work just good. Today: You are just trying to slap the most realistic textures, you dont care about if it fits or not, if it looks realistic. Even if you could have made a better game if it was more stylized...

That "cars exploding much sooner" thing sounds like a Frames Per Second issue. The old games would have calculated time in frames, so when say 200 frames pass from the moment a vehicle ignites it explodes. at 20 fps this would take 10 seconds. At 60? A bit over three seconds. No idea what the actual numbers are, but I hope that helps!

The updates in Online are just flipped asssets that a programmer slaps together in one day. It is far evident when GTA5 was released how incosistent everything was. Lets mention one example, the models. You have one model that looks like it came out from a PS2 game, another next to it that looks like its from a PS3 era and some are even too much detailed to even be in any game let alone in an outdated mess like the Rage engine is, or wahtever the F they call it nowadays. It's like playing a sandbox messed up map in Garry's Mod using halfbaked content built by five year olds and not an actual coherent game.
Because graphics are only addiction to story, gameplay and atmosphere. Not a single game became classic and widely loved by a public just because it's graphics. And also even modern ultra-detalized, ray-traced, super-puper graphics 10 years later will became obsolete crap comparing to that technical level of graphics that will be contemporary in future.
I'm enjoying San andreas, probably cause it's free on gamepass and I didn't have to pay for it. The controls more than make up for the bugs. I can finally beat the low rider race without rage quitting.
You know what's worse? The people who made the mobile GTA games, literally ported the mobile game to the consoles and pc, and have the audacity to charge it full price... it gets worse, the director doesn't care at all, neither does Take two I'm not surprised, and I knew it was trash because they didn't show gameplay
Idk why but I had a feeling this wasn’t gonna live up to the hype and I didn’t even have that info having the Mobile game and charge it as a console game, that’s fucked up either way you look at it
This whole tactic of coming out with a “remastered edition” of an old game that’s either barely an upgrade from the original or even a downgrade from the original, selling it at full price and then delisting the original so you’re forced to pay for the new full price “remaster” is getting disappointingly common. It’s just nothing but pure greed from the developers designed to cash in on old IPs by putting in almost no effort. GTA Definitive, Dark Souls prepare to die edition, Kingdoms of Amalur: Rereckoining... I’m getting sick of it.
I'm tired of it too. You go to any youtube video of any old game and you will see people say stupid things like "wow this game deserves a remaster" or "the devs should remake this game" and other things. It's like they're begging for the devs to feed them poison intentionally.
I'm sure the developers have no fault in this, this is clearly R* business side. I'd be pissed too if I was a developer of the OG games, and knew that your game is going to be replaced by an inferior version of it.
Yes it's disgusting. And the fact they're sueing modders for.their hard effort and love for the game.. for this lazy slop they couldn't be bothered with... It's absolutely disgusting,
This just shows how desperate they got when Mafia got it's "definitive edition". That's exactly why the developers of Mafia chose to do it from scratch, rather than this sort of "remaster" they did with GTA. They knew that it would be impossible to recreate the original Mafia using the orignal assets, that it would not just be broken, but actually not viable commercially. Shameful is the word I'd use to describe this thing they did here. It would had been much more fair to the fans to just had the game fixed work perfect on modern Windows.
Hopefully nothing. It's pretty apparent that this was a total quick-cash grab; re-release our most popular games with a few new "enhancements" and throw a modern price tag on it and call it a day. They've probably forgotten about Bully, Red Dead Revolver, the Midnight Club series, etc so they won't be touched and shouldn't be touched if this is the quality we can expect from R⭐️ from now on
They got rid of Vice City's orignal selection screen?! That selection screen was cool: it looked like something from a 1980's music video. The background changed when a different menu was selected.
14:28 - dear GmanLives, thank you very much for sublime everything that I wanted to say about GTA3's Liberty City and it's atmosphere. For me it always was a criminal capital, that lives last days before 911, it capitalises everything about crime right before it, and its foggy cold atmosphere was making game unique, and, as you said, make you want to take 2 showers. Yet feels like nobody loves it today, everyone is blinded of 80s vhs nostalgia and seeing in Vice city something, that it have not
Agreed. To me, GTA 3 was always a 90's game, and it had that atmosphere of cynicism and edginess before corporations started capitalizing on it in the actual 00's. It was also very noir. Sure, it was set in 2001, but it didn't represent the 2000's. GTA SA, by comparison, for a game set in 1992, was very 2000's. Kinda sad, really. And let's not forget that GTA 3 was supposedly set in autumn, so the foggy, cold feeling makes sense too. And yes, the 80's nostalgia is nauseating these days.
They actually didn't even use new textures for most of the games, they instead AI upscaled alot of the old textures leading to tons of uneven texturing and misspelled signs.

Definitely with you on the rain. That DAMNED rain! I planned on playing the series in order but it didn't really matter too much story-wise so went with Vice City, which is also my personal favourite other than IV (Serbian Immigrant in New York?! YES!) But although there are many setbacks from the originals and having loved GTA since the first release and still own all the original copies, even that questionable "remaster" of SA for 360, PS3 and PC, was also terrible. The planes would randomly disappear when flying overhead which was one thing I loved about the original SA was all the cool NPC things going on... CJ's sisters head being a completely different colour than her body. Bought the Definitive on my XBOX One and so far definitely noticed small things that piss me off right off the bat, especially cars blowing up has screwed up so many missions, and again THE RAIN! But all in all, as much as there are many negative things about it, being as old as they were as mentioned, at least there was an effort in general. Lazy? Yeah, but an effort nonetheless and it is nice to be able to play them on a more modern console and still have yet to be deterred from my childhood favourite series of games other than Sly Cooper. Being said, thank you for all your effort in making this video and I am with ya! Just hope it hasn't killed your love for them too much. There is just no visual consistency with this remaster. The old versions objectively had worse technology but still look better because the models, graphics, textures and lighting all complimented each other. With this remaster, we have realistic, modern lighting mixed in with cartoony models that look like they came out of a PS2 game (because they did).
They probably had worse technology back in the day but it sure felt like it was used to its fullest. This feels like the team was spread way too thin to work on three separate games.
Sadly, that's what crap companies think a remaster is, just slapping the latest light engine and upping the textures from 512p to 720p. That's why I hate the remastered Mass Effect Trilogy. Yeah, they fixed some stuff but the original lighting the game had was to create atmosphere, now that the new engine uses regular lighting to make it looks more like real light, they messed up their style horribly.

The reason they removed it from the Rockstar launcher is actually because some modders figured out the games are literally just the Renderware originals running on top of Unreal, plus these *adjustments*. The same code, same leftovers, same archives, even the disabled Hot Coffee code, it's all there. @@Holesale00 Hate to break it to you but RSG doesn't have key developers for a long time now. They source out independent cheap talent.

This just goes to show that more modern, technically impressive and/or detailed graphics doesn't necessarily mean better.
in fact it rarely does.
Because graphics are only addiction to story, gameplay and atmosphere. Not a single game became classic and widely loved by a public just because it's graphics. And also even modern ultra-detalized, ray-traced, super-puper graphics 10 years later will became obsolete crap comparing to that technical level of graphics that will be contemporary in future.
back in my day i called ppl who cared about grahics as grahics whores, cause story, game play etc matter most
How many times do we need to say gameplay over graphics? It's why people still play tic tac toe. If you want graphics you watch a movie.

The irony is that 2K Games and Hangar 13, the people behind those remasters, are also under Take Two, the same parent company of Rockstar

Look at mafia 2 de and mafia 3 de. Stop nitpicking mafia de. It was a complete remake of one game. These are 3 full gta games you want remade which would take at the least 5 - 7 years especially if you want a finished product.
Plus Skygfx for PS2 atmosphere graphics
this looks like something you'd make in unity or unreal 4 for practice.
it is made in unreal 4 😂
@@Sus3214 they ported the models, fucked them up in some cases, removed stuff and ctrl+c/v the code, then paid some things in the store and shipped it. I think there wasnt even a single QA tester and if yes, then god they did an awful job
If you planned on keeping your day job…😒😒
Aw shit you just gave away their trade secret!
@@RaskaTheFurry I saw someone on LinkedIn sharing a screenshot of their name in the QA section of the credits, so they definitely had a few at least.
but QA can't fix anything, they will just list issues for Devs to work on .

That Batman quote about “Living long enough to see yourself become the villain” seems so apt for Rockstar right now! From 2001 to 2018 they were the greatest developers to ever make video games, seeing rockstar’s logo on a game was like a guaranteed seal of top quality content. It’s a real shame to see what they’ve become!
Could not agree more, me and my brothers used to love every game they created until now with this and how many times they’re re-releasing GTAV…
I swear buddy rockstar were like the Quentin Tarantino of gaming, now they are going on the same line as Ubisoft and EA
They started ruining gta V before 2018. RDR2 was cool but I already was getting tired of them by then
@@randomhiphop5055 true but, no denying RDR2 was an incredible technical achievement, that’s why I went as far as 2018 but, yes, definitely start ruining GTA V before 2018
Rockstar became the villain after GTA online became a huge cash cow.
@@TrialRagnarok66 At least in the case of the remastered Mass Effect trilogy you can still buy the original three games on digital storefronts for PC if you wanted to, and EA wasn't depraved enough to illegalize mods for them either.
I knew this """definitive""" edition was gonna suck from the moment they showed it off. The worst thing about being a pessimist is being right all the time.
You mean a realist, i saw this shit coming cus Rockstar sucks so much nowdays and they're lazy idiots
It do be like that. I already set my expectations super low. With GTA3 I expected nothing. Take one of the most boring games of all time and shine it a bit, it's still boring, shocker. I still had a tiny, tiiiiiny spark of hope for san andreas, but once it was revealed to be a giant pile of shit. I felt no disappointment as I my pessimistic ways of thinking never allow me to get truly let down.
It's fun to see how these games will never get even a half decent "remaster" or a good, functioning way to play them on modern hardware in all their glory, without issues. I hope that in 200 years, these games become completely unplayable, relics lost to time.
@@vrapbrap Emulation.
You do realize Emulation exists? How do you think all the people playing Super Mario 64 in it's full glory are doing? Getting a Nintendo 64 nowadays is impossible, let alone get a cartridge of Super Mario 64
So people emulate all of the golden age games to enjoy them, from any system or game
Is this piracy? Yes. It's piracy.
Do I give a fuck? No. I don't give a flying fuck because I'm not gonna hunt down a Super Mario 64.
@@captaincrunch6011 I don't think it's that difficult to get your hands on an N64... It's a lot harder to find an N64 controller in good condition without a creeky sticky analogue though.
@@SynphamyMusic Trueeeeeeeeee
And yeah you are very right! If you live in the USA I think you won't have THAT much trouble finding an N64 BUT if your me and your from the middle east GOOD LUCK FINDING AN N64
this is probably due to how no one ever bought an N64 when it released in the middle east and was hugely destroyed by the PS market, even the Xbox didn't stand a chance here :(
Don't get me wrong, PS2 and PS3 Took 50% of my childhood lol (rest 50% is from PC Games, most ones coming from Valve and Minecraft) but it sucks in the future now knowing how impossible it is to get your hands on one without spending A LOT of cash.
I am a Unreal Engine game developer (previously a Rockstar North developer) and it sickens me just looking at these simple mistakes such as clipping, collision box issues, character mesh colliding, texture overlapping etc. The fact is that 90% of these issues can be solved by just regenerating the collision mesh by just a simple click on the Regenerate button in the Unreal Project viewer, Making some changes to clipping objects by changing the XYZ cords in the level editor etc.
I miss Claude having that cold look of indifference from the ps2 version
Mods make a better definitive edition, this is just depressing.
Imagine being a company so big with such docile customers, that whatever crap you put on the market, they buy anyway. They’ve created such a consumerist culture that people spend not only what they afford, but also what they don’t afford.
It's $60. If you can't afford that it's because you mismanage your finances terribly.
Apple Inc xD
@d R I grew up in poverty. Your assumption is incorrect. I don't piss money away drinking it or buying fast food, but when I see something that will entertain me for a long period of time I weigh it out and make a decision to buy it. 3 games at $20 each that I'll put at least 10 hours into is not a bad entertainment investment. $60 dollars is not that hard to come by when you have no time limit.
"Imagine being a company so big with such docile customers, that whatever crap you put on the market, they buy anyway."
you mean Apple, right ?
( and yes, they do often use the argument, that im too poor... I have money, i can buy it right now from the get go... but im not stupid )
