      Agreed completely, you put it into words better than I could. I finally got to experience a Tool concert 2 years ago after being a fan since the late 2000s and missing out on the 10,000 Days tour and suffering through the subsequent hiatus. I'd recommend trying hallucinogens and giving Lateralus a listen start to finish if you can't go to a concert... that's a trip and a half.

      @@javierperea8954
      lol Natural log is not "e", either. Natural log isn't even a number.
      A "Log" function is the inverse of an Exponential function. "Log" is an operation that is used to solve for "x", when you have an expression in the form of b^x = a, where "b" is the base of that log. So if you have 10^x = 1000, an equivalent expression using the "log'" operation would be Log base 10 of 1000 = x. So in "10^x = 1000", x = 3, just like in "Log base 10 of 1000 = x", x = 3.
      A "Natural Log" is a log whose base is the constant "e", which you correctly identified as 2.718... etc.
      So if you were to re-write this calculation "Natural Log of e = 1" in the "b^x = a" format, it would be 2.718^x = 2.718. In this case, x = 1.
      What power do you raise e to get e? It's the same power you raise any number to result in itself - you raise it to the power of 1.

    My take on this song is about a bad time in my young life where I suffered mental and physical abuse from a high school boyfriend. I recognized the feelings right away as Maynard sang; I'm glad he asked the listeners to go to a vulnerable place, better to understand his message. It takes me back to that painful time; the song reminding me of the feelings I'd locked away, but also telling me how far I've come emotionally from then. Maynard writes about what we can all identify with, and Tool adds that beautiful music to it. The guitar that cries in pain...so familiar...the hurt, the fear and desperation that abuse brings.

      Tool, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Linkin Park... Emotion, Pain, Sadness, Rage, Hurt, Sorrow, ELATION & the BLACKEST Depths of Depression all made manifest in music & Lyrics. Maynard is a very lucky man, most of these groups saved the lives & souls on Millions of people while destroying their creators. It just hurts so much sometimes, but their self-sacrifice helps us push on & LIVE. May GOD of any persuasion or name that exists bless them for what they gave to us.

    Parabol/Parabola, please. It's my all time favorite song. Another aspect of tool I've found interesting is the choice of where they lyrics are sung. Lateralus, for example, is sung with the syllables matching the Fibonacci sequence (which is related to the golden ratio) in ascending and descending order. Furthermore, the song is written in 9-8-7...the 16th (4 beats x 4 beats=16 beats=1 measure) digit of the Fibonacci sequence is 987. The entire Lateralus album is highly associated with mathematics.

    I love your comment at the end about how the music would hit and affect those who were there! I was there just last Friday and have seen them 4x, they're on tour again and set to put a new album out August 30th! I'm so excited! I've been a tool fan since the early 90's! ( I'm sure someone will ask you to pick apart his side projects if they haven't already, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.)
    I really enjoy watching someone who doesn't know the music as intimately as my time has made me with them, but who still knows the music intimately immediately! I really appreciate getting to see someone kind of explain some of what's going on. I can play guitar by ear, but can't vocalize very well, so it's neat to hear it explained, and so well 'on the spot' as you are.
    You hit some really important things on the head as well, my brother asked me why Maynard was hiding out in the background the other night, and I said he hasn't been a front man since the early to mid-90s when he had less control over the stage setup, I believe. And just as you said, he melds right into the band so well and doesn't want to be the centerpiece. Also he finds the lights and crowd distracting and has to visit a very emotional place to reproduce the feelings in his work for the crowd.
    I saw your first video on his sober performance, and noted it was interesting that another person of your profession had made the same comment immediately upon seeing his stance, LOL. It's interesting to know how important a stance can be for those who have to really work at it and it made me a little emotional to hear that he can do that so well wow putting so much art visually into his sound. THANKS!
    I'll be interested to hear if you've ever taken a stab at Peter Steele of Type O Negative. He's probably my second favorite vocalist, after Maynard, then there's Robert Plant and Jim Morrison 😁.

    "If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay. You minimize my movement anyway. I must persuade you another way."
    I know, I know... Just posting a quote from the song is somewhat cheap. As if I'm riding the coattails of another's talent. Tool's lyrics just need to be memorialized. The music itself is awe-inspiring. Maynard's voice is nigh angelic. Yet the words themselves are as deep and emotional as the other magnificient components.
    Even just saying them in my head, with no tonality at all, takes me to a strange place. Like being in the eye of a hurricane. Dangerous, but peaceful. Terrible and beautiful. I have always loved Tool for this. Always on the fine line between things. Like a luminous shadow or the silver lining of a steel-gray sky.
    Sorry, I told you it takes me to a strange place. Yet, somehow comforting and familiar.

    It’s funny you said, he’s not a separate entity from the band. “Out in front” I believe you said. If you see Tool live, he is at the back of the stage, furthest from the front of the stage. He’s truly an amazing vocalist, and is able to do things vocally that other vocalists aren’t able to do. It’s magical.

      John Eaton, as much as I love Maynard (top 5 singers) I also know that most of his band doesn’t see him as highly as he sees himself. Many radio show hosts, talk show hosts, touring bands etc have neutral, if not negative things to say about Maynard and his arrogance and just plain asshole-ness. Look it up and see for yourself. It’s what makes him- him, I guess, but he’s really just an extreme introvert that handles his fame by being a massive prick.

    it is exceptionally hard not to geek-out with TOOL in your head. maynard et al have that effect. you find things happening in the mood, in the lyric (i love the surprise of no lyrics sheet that lead to unexpected connections being made). they take on contrasts more extreme than other bands, and do it all smoothly. maynard's voice helps as he is so capable, competent, and willing to be an instrument. it's fun watching you discovering this band. i've had them in my head since their first e.p and they've only become more thoughtful, complex, and satisfying.

    • @Handles_Are_Bad.Phuk-them-off
      @Handles_Are_Bad.Phuk-them-off 5 років тому

      you know maynard hates to be the face/ focal point of the band, they thought a lot before deciding on tool and he faces away from the crowd 3/4 of the time to further emphasise that he is 'a' member not 'the' member. Its a good thing he didn't see you dis the band like that.

    • @hippomancy
      @hippomancy 5 років тому

      @@Handles_Are_Bad.Phuk-them-off dis the band? i love the band. and i am aware of maynard's team-first approach, but he also has fronted APC, Puscifer, and a bunch of other one-offs. he performs, it is his modus operandi, to be an instrument, to be a vocalist performer; no stage, no performance, so he gets out there and creates. the whole band loves to create and have side projects, not all are musical ventures, but they keep busy. i have no issue explaining myself to anyone, but the fact is that the vast majority of the fandom can name Maynard, before Danny Carey (drums), Adam Jones(guitar), or Justin Chancellor(bass, since 95).

      @@hippomancy Loving a thing does not mean you treat it with respect. maynard et al is a "your so super cool and smart, hip and edumurikated" way of saying tool, the band name, in an, as explained earlier, disrespectful way. Secondarily anybody that recognises the singer and not the band isn't worth their salt. APC, go watch the video clip for judith and then tell me with a straight face that he is taking centre-stage there, even tho its a song about his mum. As for his shitty side project, which I admittedly stopped plying attention to in all of ten seconds, in everything others have shown me he is largely behind the stage or obscuring himself (granted that may be a part of his performance there or in general at this point) but in the other two cases he denies being the front man, so how's about you show the band respect if you love it so much and abide by the members wishes?

    • @hippomancy

      @@Handles_Are_Bad.Phuk-them-off sounds like you think you're the policeman. getting outraged on someone else's behalf doesn't mean you are somehow the 'better' fan, and that your methodology is the only "respect" to be recognized. you sound worshipful. is this something your god Maynard would smile on? chill out. been listening to Tool since 1990. been listening to King Crimson and Peter Gabriel (whom i listen to way more than Tool) since 1977. been listening to the Beatles since 1970. you need Maynard on the pedestal, which he would absolutely f'king hate, go right ahead, but others have been on the pedestal, and it's all ephemeral. i remember when Elvis died. next. respect and worship are two different things. go be someone else's priest.

"As for his shitty side project," clearly worship the guy, I think he'd be indifferent or happy that i think for myself and question authority tho. "chill out" the ability to crate a sound or resounding argument is inhibited by high emotions, so think I'm pretty lacking there. Not sure why you are big|)icking that, clearly massive, E-peen you got but good on you for being committed, I guess, might just be that your brain is so old its starting to rot in the case try fish and olive oil coupled whit taking on a new hobby or interest.
