im sure if i went through your comments, someone has said it. maynard is talking to himself here. the entire album is invoking Jungian concepts. the tell is in one of the earlier lyrics where he sings "choke this infant here before me, what is this but my reflection". that much i can say for certain, but my speculation is that the gap represents the place where he integrates this aspect of himself "you better take care not to make me enter, for if i do we both may disappear." he describes this part of himself as an infant, so i imagine its some primal aspect or innocence, but at the end of the song they are taking the plunge and destroying each other to reemerge as something new. its the same theme explored in 46&2 but where as that one seems more positive about integration, this one has a destructive feel. it does sound like he was in an abusive relationship with this part of himself.
sorry, i had a shower and couldnt help but go over the lyrics and really let it percolate. its been 20 years since i really looked at this song so closely. he gives the clue as to which jungian part of himself he is communicating with when he uses the gendered pronoun "she". he is talking to his anima, the albums title. i assume thats why the hostility, where as we treat our shadow as completely non existent we tend to be hostile towards our masculine and feminine sides depending on which gender we identify with. maynard would famously wear breasts at this time, including to give interviews and sometimes even wear a wig. its really fascinating that he was dealing with all of this 20 years before we collectively began to face it.
More Tool please! 😁 One of my favorite bands. You could do only Tool on this channel and I'd be good with it. LOL Great video as always and keep up the good work!
My girlfriend in High School used to say I listened to this album too much. Yet here we are 23 years later and people are reacting to it. This album will stand the test of time.
Every album is a masterpiece. I listen to a lot of music, but Tool will always be my favorite. I'm just glad I was alive to experience it from the beginning up to the present elevation
Tool is better felt than counted. At the risk of sounding cheesy and corny, "Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind..." -Maynard and Friends
TOOL is a once in a lifetime band. Maynard's lyrics typically have several meanings. MORE TOOL please. Oh don't forget about A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.
@@RicosTinFoilSombrero congratulations on your sobriety! H. Is one of my absolute favorites ...but then again every Tool son is my favorite. Good choice!
This is one of the Tool songs that saved me, aside from Reflection. After having survived sexual and emotional abuse, I was able to release so much anger and sadness. All that I couldn’t express was expressed for me through this song.
Ariana, this song saved my life, as well. I was trapped in a physically and emotionally abusive marriage, that i do not doubt, would have ended in my demise. And I'm not exaggerating when I say, a single line from this song was all that kept me alive at times. I sympathize and empathize with you ❤
One of them, shism is, for my understanding, much more about ideology, that causes friction, in general. Took me a while to think about it that way but became ever more hardening when the little "church bells" shimed into the song. Ideology to divide us into different pieces that in its origin fit, since we are all just human first and foremost.
@@Spasstiful as is with most of Tool’s catalogue, you can dissect the songs like an onion, each layer with a separate and distinct interpretation. You can look at the Schism as a division in a relationship, religion or as society due to lack of communication. None are wrong - none are right - that’s the nature of Tool.
I can only listen to the Salival Version, Honestly. Its *almost* the same with Third Eye but Ill listen to the album version just for Bill's Monologue.
"it almost feels like a trance now" Yes. Surviving in an abusive relationship feels exactly like a trance. A meanless state of existing, not seeing the options, not feeling the joy and the hope. Just...existing.
@@martijndenekamp5052 I whole heartily agree, sorry I wasn't necessarily commenting/debating you - I tend to not like starting my own UA-cam threads, and I just found yours that touched on a similar subject. Much love to ya
@@99bajakid totally nothing to feel sorry about. The only reason for me to react is that I thought you may be didn't notice that it could be broader. Out of love I never felt attacked.
The tone in MJKs voice and time change during the bridge at "If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay here" still gives me chills even 25 years later
@@chrismeredith1169 Speaking of the salival album (live recordings, which no quarter is a bonus track on, and IIRC also has a weird hidden track at the end of the song) their live reimagining of pushit is one of my all time favorite songs!
For me this song has always been about a person's inner dialog. Somebody suffering through a horrible bout of depression. The self loathing. The need to be loved. Every gambit of human emotions. This song means what you want it to. As does all Tool songs.
Of all the reactions to this song I've watched, and there have been MANY, yours resonates with me the most. You've pointed things out not only in the vocal stylings, but the musical pitch and how they relate to expressing emotion. Very awesome reaction, thank you.
@@Shovelheadtard Yes, I saw them on the Lateralus tour in 2004 in California, he replicates exactly, WTF? that's weird or a troll comment, if you've ever sang and attempted vocal fry you would understand. You could be f....ing around though.
@@ricardomartinezxx I suppose they were referring to Ticks and Leaches studio recording when MJK reportedly had vocal issues after recording. I didn't hold a candle to that, but that's written somewhere, on wiki I suppose.
@@jonkwape3097 Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised , i believe I heard that as well. The Ticks and Leeches vocal screams are absolutely brutal, I tried them and choked tremendously a few times. Those and the NOOWWW in The Pot are some of his nastiest screams, and they will definitley do some damage to vocal chords. Even the Tatiana chick from Jinjer doesnt do nasty brutal screams like those songs. Her vocal fry is very controlled, if you can believe it. And also, she did have years of training despite what people want to say to build her mystery and myth.
Naturally, a Salival version reaction will be necessary and I am looking forward to it. You have had the most constructive response to this band out of all the reactionary videos I have watched. Please keep it up and continue intelligently spacing them out. I'm sure your husband has already mentioned all of this. Lot of bands out there, lot of people wanting to hear other talented individuals to break it down.
Absolutely!!! I had some cash to burn as a teen and picked up the set cuz it looked amazing. I was so blown away. I thin that live version is the definitive version.
Fun Fact: When I first bought this album, I kept skipping PushIt because I thought it was filler of just bees flying around. I didn't know about it until a friend told me his favorite song was PushiIt. Now, it is one of my favorites, so happy they played it on their 2022 tour.
yah,,, why not just put some multi interpretation of musical pieces, and just play with meter and times signature, and dont forget brings your heavy tones. thats it we belongs to prog genre. i prefer the real prog genre, where PLAYER are VIRTUOSO, and TOOL for me are not even close to ideal prog genre musician,
@@TheCharismaticVoice It's been said that "Jimmy" is a prelude to "Judith" and can be triggering in its own way. Regardless, the pingponging vibrato in multiple spots is to die for and it's an awesome song in its own right.
@@TheCharismaticVoice as mentioned by many in the thread, chronologically, ‘jimmy’, APC ‘Judith’, and wings for Marie 1&2 (which you already pleasantly reacted to) detail what he went through or felt during the duration of his mother’s condition. So it’s understandable why your husband feels strongly to that particular track. I love ‘intermission/jimmy’ as a track since it’s one of maynards strongest, and one of his angriest vocal performances that perfectly encapsulates the feelings from being a kid who experiences an event that changes him forevermore.
@@TheCharismaticVoice In what way are these 'trigger' songs (for Kirk)? Just curious as I don't have any context; you may have explained it in a previous video, but I can't recall!
I attribute my noticing the sinister like guitar wiggle sound between "pushin me! There's no love in..." to your video. That's one beautiful part of Tool. Many years after any work is released there are still certain sounds, parts, and sections to be discovered and experienced. You contributed to said experience. Thank you.
Agreed. It took me since 1997 to finally notice that part last year. Thats how beautofully subtle and layered they work. Each song is an eternal puzzle to be worked through. Then we have a full album. Puzzles within puzzles within labyrinths. Every time.
Definitely gotta react to the live salival version. Both the original track and salival are great, but salival is a beaut alternative to the original, and highlights Maynards vocals in that period in time.
I very well might do a comparison between the two one day.

@@TheCharismaticVoice It's pretty much a completely different song, it just shares lyrics. They reinvented the song in a way it usually takes a different band playing a cover to. I would 100% love to hear your take on it.
@@TheCharismaticVoice You really should, the live version on Salival is so different and so incredible. I vastly prefer it myself, though both are masterpieces.
Yes please. I think the Salival version is even more of a ride than the original one. Some lyrics are slightly changed and these changes make the reinvented version even better. In the end I always feel kind of (emotionally) exhausted because of the trip they're taking us on with...
"woah, that was a nice, dirty held out vocal there." Kirk! Play The Grudge for her! Great analysis, as always. I'm a big fan of you reacting to all of Tool. That husband of yours is a good influence on you.
Oh, I know it's coming. I might have heard it years ago in the car, so not the headphone analysis that makes such a difference. It's on his short list of greatest Tool songs. Or long list. It's a list, and I think it's every single song.
@@TheCharismaticVoice For sure. The list of best tool songs is really just a ranked list of all of their songs. (Jury is still out on Fear Inoculum for me, though.)
There's a video of them performing this version live where he takes down a fan who stupidly runs up onto the stage during the song. Maynard literally flips the dude over his shoulder and sits on top of him for the rest of the song without missing a single beat. It's pretty epic!
I don't remember with martial art, but he's a black belt (or what ever the equal is in what he is trained in). Talented and driven in so many areas. Unfiltered genius.
Her analysis is, in my opinion, the best in world (of what I've been exposed too). To simultaneously analyse the musicians, the vocals, the lyrics and verbalise it in a way for the average person to understand. She "feels" the music she's critiquing unlike others. Every time I watch her reaction to a song I love, it's like hearing it in a different light, and I enjoy it in a new way. It's like hearing the song for the first time again. Absolutely brilliant skill. Reaction channels are underrated but this one... she is gifted. Plus she's cute which is always a bonus for video. Wish she reacted to the live version though. It's on a whole 'nother level of alien musicianship.
Tool has been one of my favorite bands since I discovered them in 2005. This video, and your video on Wing's for Marie & 10,000 Days, actually made me bawl. Seriously, thank you
The Salival version is so deep & profound, I haven't even listened to the original album version in over a decade. That made it interesting. My favorite take off of Anima is probably 46 & 2, for personal reasons, but Third Eye is a the hint to their future evolution as a the band. An underrated album among their catalog to be sure. 18:43 To me this symbolizes someone who has tried to express their rage & frustration, just to be dragged back into the depths of their suffering. Whether through the manipulation of their partner/tribe/cult, or through their own devices. Or perhaps his "partner" IS his Creativity, expressed through sound. Being "pushed" to create; the end result tears at the singers throat. The lyrics "survival is my only friend"; the person is in Fight/Flight. Either result must end in silence. The song ends with the reminder that there can be a transcendence at the end of that suffering; a Post Traumatic Growth Experience that is the onset of transformation.
The power of Tool’s music always makes my chest feel heavy and my breathing cadence change. I’ve been listening for over 20 years and I can return to the same songs over and over and still feel the same emotions I did then. Each song is an experience.
I'm mostly dying at the fact that you had to disclaim Kirk as your husband to what appear to be a deluge of review-based marriage proposals haha. Also I retract any prior marriage proposals.
Kirk managing all of the emails and reading all of the proposals - 'Right, that's it, the next video you're dedicating to me and clearly defining me as your husband' *slams desk.
I think their relationship might be a bit more secure than that. 😜 But it's cute to imagine Kirk asking for a birthday analysis of one of his favorite TOOL songs. I think they're probably pretty well partnered in how they manage the channel. 🤗
@@RobDerhak eh I interpreted it literally as well. I think it’s just a dark ending to a fictional story that may have allegorical connections to his own life.
I can hear Kirk "fanboying" hard in the background. Tool's songs are quite tricky to understand, maybe they sound offensive or shocking at first, especially if you are watching an official clip, but they always have a deep meaning, either religious, relationships, abuse, personal stuff on Maynard's life, etc. It's not the kind of music I listen, but I respect what they do. Four Grammy's is not an easy feat. =)
@@TheCharismaticVoice They grow on you with time, like a fine wine does. And even after decades you notice some new detail here and there. Something that only happens with tool for me.
The beauty of Tool’s lyrics is that it allows the listener to find an interpretation that suits their own experience. Maynard has never liked explaining his lyrics and wants the listener to come to their own conclusions.
@@shanepartington7667 Yes. He wants you to use them like a "tool" for your own reflection/evolution. Cannot remember exactly how he phrased it in one interview way back when.
My favorite Tool album because it’s the one they found their real sound. When I bought it I already had the previous two records. Imagine how this album blew me away. That moment I will never forget and therefore I like it better than Lateralus. But they are both awesone.
The reason they found their real sound is because this is the first album with Justin Chancellor as the bassist. Paul D'Amour was the bassist on all the previous albums. He's a much bigger driving force behind their sound than most bassists in rock music, and he's the one that brought in that murky, sludge metal sound that really helped them set themselves apart from all other rock music.
My favorite band of all time. The first time I heard it was 9 months before AEnima was released, when they played 1+ hours as an opening act for Primus at one of their NYE shows. I could probably write at LEAST a couple full pages if I wanted to go into every detail I personally hear and feel from this song, but I'm sure that literally no one would want to read it. lol. In any case, I'm glad you're going deeper into Tool's catalogue, and am really looking forward to you getting to some of their other truly epic songs, like Lateralus and 7empest.
Oh man, two of Kirk's favorite songs are Lateralus and 7empest. I've heard both extensively, but haven't done deep dives into either of them, so. . . more analysis videos than reactions. It will happen, someday!
@@TheCharismaticVoice If you haven't watched it yet, the Drum Cam video of the song Pneuma, where you can see everything Danny Carey does in the song, would be an interesting watch, I am sure. Glad to see Kirk and I agree on those songs. ;) lol
why do people say that singers/bands/things are underrated? where does that statement come from? is it because mainstream media doesn't have Tool songs on repeat every 30 minutes (thank goodness) or is it because new fans have never heard of them before; or at least not until YT reaction videos started being a thing. I think my favorite thing about Tool is their ability to stay out of the mainstream spotlight and retain their fans and still keep making new ones!! I know for a fact that Tool's long-awaited 13 year release (Fear Inoculum) topped the internet for most views/searches that night. Unforgettable night and one I was lucky to share with my children. Long live Tool! 🥰 (in our hearts and minds)
How is Maynard underrated? I think most singers would say he's one of the best. Like for instance freddy murcury was widely considered one of the best vocalist of all time but i think Maynard has more tools. No pun intended. Maynard may not be unbelievable at one thing nuts he's amazing at every single form of singing. He can do it all. Who tha fuck whisper sings then comes in jazzy then screams all in less than a minute? No one. Pink floyd use to do stuff like this but more jazzy and not as heavy by far but similar kinda vibe.Maynard underrated? I don't think anyone has ever thought Maynard was not anything but a monster vocalist and song writer.
Tool was the first live concert I ever went too, saw them back in 98. This song was so intense live, everyone pushing forward at first, then we just ended moving like a whole unit back and forth, left and right. At times I could just pick up my feet and move 10-20 ft in whatever direction we were going. The effect that the music had on the ebb and flow of the crowd was like nothing I have ever experienced before or since then. I don't think anyone got seriously injured but I remember seeing two girls trying their best to hold onto each other looking like playdoh being squashed in your hand. I seen some people passing out im guessing from the heat, but they were picked up and sent to the front to the event staff. Coming out the other side of that left me with a profound feeling that I had been changed forever.
The contrast between the studio version and the live version is amazing. Because in this one, you can sense Maynard is in the heat of the relationship with the tone of the singing very 'desperate'. And in the live version which was recorded a few years later, there is kind of a remorse/mournful tone to it, with very little 'desperation'. Like you can sense he was looking back at something from his past.
I waited this whole video for your face when he sustains the last syllable of "I must persuade you another way" and it did not disappoint. Pushit is a top 3 TOOL song for me and that note is a big part of why. Always appreciate your TOOL videos a little bit more than any others.
Thank you. I know a lot of other reactors/vocal coaches do The Pot, Lateralus, and 46 & 2. Great songs, but Kirk's opinion they're not as deep as Pushit, Wings 1&2, and whatever is coming next. =:-)
32:10 "Communication is so important in a relationship". That IS Schism, my all time favorite Tool song. I love their entire catalogue but Schism and Pushit are my top 2. I would love to hear your analysis of Schism. Happy Birthday Kirk.
Omg Schism is definitely in my top 2 but with Vicarious. I am BEGGING for her analysis of those two. She always 110% verifies every time ive deeply emotionally related to a song and why I was right in believing they were masterpieces, from Tool to Slipknot and to Metallica shehas literally NEVER MISSED with her reactions and analysis
"There's no love in fear" is definitely the strongest line in the entire song and, so far on my Tool journey, one of the strongest lyrics in their discography 🤘
This song is the definition of the toxic relationship in song form. I feel when people are in a toxic, codependent relationship they can feel both trapped and yet strangely secure knowing where they stand in it. But when one of the people finally decide they need to break away to better their life, the other person will fight very hard to keep them in it. I think Maynard does a brilliant job in this song describing such a relationship and the stages it can go through, and the depths that you can sink to. When the song reaches its apex in tone and he says " managed to push myself away/and you as well my dear" in his mind he's made his decision. The relationship is over. But the other person just won't accept it. They come back even stronger, and the mood changes to anger. "Staring down the hole again/survival is my only friend" He realizes he's trapped on the edge of a precipice, this person is pushing him over the edge and now his only choice to escape is dire. He's basically saying I love you, but the only way I can escape this disastrous mess of a relationship is to kill you. That's the only thing left that he can do, and he hates it but he does it anyway. This song gives me chills every time I hear it. Great reaction, and I look forward to more TooL in the future! 🤘🌀🤘
I felt this hard back in the days of my early Tool fandom. I was in a relationship just like this one, and it was one of the most influential relationships I've ever had. My ex introduced me to the philosophies of Crowley, Nietzsche, Jung and Leary, she made me face my 'demons' and put me on the hard path of self-realization I strive towards to this day. Ultimately, she had here own demons, and we could only go so far before we were just gaslighting and triggering the shit out of each other, but time has passed, we can laugh about it now! ;c) However, I began to accept that I needed to work on myself before I can work on a romantic relationship, and spent time reflecting on the same philosophies that both inspired Tool and was introduced to me by my ex. I started to see a deeper interpretation, not as a toxic inter-personal relationship, but an intra-personal issue; most likely the Ego speaking to the Id, aka 'the Beast that must be quelled' (hence him clawing their throat away). I see a similar thing going on with songs like 'Stinkfist' and 'Prison Sex'; first level is individual acts of inter-personal abuse, second level is a broader commentary on de-sensitization and cycles of trauma, third-eye level is about the internal cycle of trauma inherent to the contradictions of subjective existence..
Ah, Kirk gets his wish fulfilled. A great choice, and the last two minutes ranks right up there as Maynard's finest moments. MJK is the King of Terrace Dynamics. If you have room for another Tool reaction, I would offer Parabol/Parabola. A lot of Maynard's range and dynamics is compressed there, and the last minute is as dirty grunge as Adam gets.
@TheCharismaticVoice Yes, please! Transcendent does not begin to cover it. Parabol/Parabola takes us into such high realms of consciousness and gratitude. I think you will love it! (TOOL fan since the beginning. I was a young adult when Opiate and Undertow came out.)
I disagree with Kirk's take on the emotion of the two versions. I think that the live version's vocals are some of the most haunting I've ever heard. Really tugs at me way more than this version.
I find the album version more intense and angry, sung from when he was going through this experience... The saliva version is almost a reflection on this when given a little time to extricate himself from this relationship and try to work through it. Both versions are masterpieces in their own right and I usually love the version I've just listened to the most ;)
Since the song is about a toxic relationship, I like that you can tell before you get to the last lyrics that the relationship ended up falling apart because of how chaotic Adam's guitar solo is.
This is honestly one of my 5 favorite songs of all time. They’re one of the greatest artists to ever live. Meticulous, pretentious, and anal for the perfect details. It’s what art is, and should be. The definition of perfection.
If memory serves, the "relationship" is when his mother marries his step-father who was abusive to him. So when he's talking about both disappearing, I think of it as one person goes to prison, the other to the morgue. My 2C. Keep up the amazing reactions. It's so awesome to hear folks who can actually appreciate the music, and help me to understand it better too. :)
"Orestes" --A Perfect Circle...Still getting the mighty diaphragmatic wizardry of Maynard, but wrapped in a different set of musicians. Dig it. Cheers.
And Judith! Kind of belongs to the Wings for Marie songs, too. Your have to complete that 😉 and there is a whole of a lot more goodness waiting for you.. Weak & Powerless, The Outsider, ...
I recently got out of an emotionally abusive relationship and hearing this song and it's lyrics after that relationship, I just feel connected to all of them. That feeling that I had of never being allowed to leave and in reality the only way I got out of that relationship was them leaving but even then, it still doesn't feel like I've left. As she said, communication if extremely important. Please to anyone to reads this, communicate in your relationships. It's so important and is what can keep a relationship healthy and safe. I'm sending love to everyone who has gone through a relationship like this or is currently going through a relationship like this

I think it is fair to say that this song is a MASTERPIECE. If I had to chooce one Tool song to rule them all, this is the one. This is greatness, and we are a bunch of lucky humans living at the same time as these titans of music🤩🙏🏻
@@thomasdecorail8825 every Tool fan is going to probably have a different song that's their all time favorite. It's changed over time for me, it depends on what I'm going through in life at times. The main takeaway is that their music is very moving and influential and any song has the possibility of helping us through a barrier of life we are struggling with.
I’ve been a Tool fan since their first album and for many years I never had access to the lyrics. I kind of preferred it as I found my own interpretations to be just as compelling. This song was one of many that carried me out of a codependent relationship. The music speaks for itself. It’s such a release. In the last year I’ve watched dozens of reactions of Tool songs. Many of them highlighting the lyrics which has brought a renewed appreciation and revelation to the meanings behind them. One song stands out for me lyrically and that one is Right in Two. The story it tells defines humanity at its most tragic. Ok, that might sound like a downer but it’s a beautiful downer.
I, 10,000% agree with every comment on this post! TOOL are ridiculously on point every time and musical genii that captivate almost all who go in and have a good look around. And come out so much better for it! And the exact same sentence can be said for Elizabeth and her amazing channel and musical wisdom she shares with those who follow the rabbit! Cheers TOOL!!! And thank you so much Elizabeth for finding me!!! Cheers dudes and peace out mofos!!! 🤟😛🤙💚
Pushit has been my favorite Tool song since the 1st time it hit my ears. I still get chills when listening to it. Jimmy is another fantastic song that I hope you have the pleasure of experiencing in a reaction video here on your wonderful channel. Thanks and be well
This album shaped my musical tastes as a young teenager i remember my friend from down the road bought it and we would listen to it from beginning to end all summer long.
24:13 Why I love Tool is that the instruments feed off and play off each other. Most bands are formula here’s xyz and the singing. But with them it’s like the instruments are having a lively conversation.
Tool is a "perfect storm". And your reactions/analyzes are SO good to listen. Thank you so much for all of your videos! And I do not know why I have not subbed before but now that has been corrected. :)
There is a concert where Maynard says “imagine loving someone so much that you had to kill them” and then they proceed to play this version of Pushit. It definitely strikes me as being stuck in a bad relationship when killing someone you love is the only way out. This is by far one of my favorite Tool songs.
The little lesson on communication being important in relationships after Maynard says "as I claw your f***ing throat away" was unexpectedly hilarious. Amazing analysis though, I didn't think about how the song sits in Am, D then Dm!
Hi Elizabeth, I'm glad that Kirk's Love and Appreciation for Tool has brought you back w/ another Reaction & Analysis. Danny is a magician on Drums, Justin is mesmerizing on Bass, Adam is wicked on Guitar, and Maynard is amazing w/ his Vocals. Thank you, Elizabeth, for making this a very Special Day for Kirk!!! 😉
Everything here is correct... except I'm pretty sure this was recorded with Paul still on bass before he left. He wrote the bass parts.... unsure which of them actually recorded it.
One of the (MANY) incredible things to consider: the instrumentalists compose their parts to full completion before handing it over to Maynard to come up with his part. It's almost as if he "heard" this F'd up relationship in the music. 😳🤩
my absolute favorite song of all time. I know it wasn't written to be interpreted this way - but this song has always been me talking to myself, and not letting the side of me that wants to die win.
My favorite song, my favorite version. Why? Probably because I heard it first, and because it's such a powerful song. The Salival version is great, but this track is perfect.
It's an amazing song... And Tool is probably the only band that can take a perfect track and make it even better doing it live and in a different style
I prefer the Salival version by a wide margin, but I am legitimately surprised that I didnt see others saying that high in the comments. I guess my finger isnt as on the pulse of the Tool community as I thought.
I have found that I usually like the first version of a song that I hear. But with Tool, I like both. Both have their merits, both are perfection. Can you imagine being at the first concert where Maynard asks for your permision to do this?
I like hearing that I’m not the only one that listens primarily to Tool, lol. There’s so much to receive from each song that even after 29 years I still get new vibes and find new things about all of them.
Just discovered this channel. Always love watching a professional and musically brilliant individual discover and explore Tool. Particularly someone who's also capable of empathizing and understanding and feeling the music too. Your facial reactions when you're trying to follow time signatures, and grasping all the twists and turns, it's me on every first, second, and sometimes third listen to a Tool song. And I am by no means even close to a musical analyst, so I just love your channel and your reactions!
She is an incredible human being. I think what draws me to her videos is the fact that the musicians and the music she analyzes are nothing like her, yet she treats them and their work with the utmost respect. It really makes me feel like no matter what you chose to do in life she would apply the same grace and attention. She may not have been your teacher then, but if you watch enough of her lessons now you may feel equally encouraged to master your craft knowing someone like her could truly appreciate you.
I am so glad yall chose the studio version. Most people react to the live version - which is musically amazing - but has a completely different feel. And it does lose some of the power of the anger and fear imo
I found this channel a few wks ago & really enjoy your professional perspectives! I went down a rabbit hole of watching a handful of your videos, but didn't see this particular Tool one. Funny- I was driving this wknd & this song came on - my FAVORITE Tool song of all times - & I thought, I'd love to hear/watch you listen to this one! And here it is; it already exists. I'm not musically trained, so it's very educational to hear your perspectives. I love the intensity of this song. Each member of Tool is so talented.

im sure if i went through your comments, someone has said it. maynard is talking to himself here. the entire album is invoking Jungian concepts. the tell is in one of the earlier lyrics where he sings "choke this infant here before me, what is this but my reflection". that much i can say for certain, but my speculation is that the gap represents the place where he integrates this aspect of himself "you better take care not to make me enter, for if i do we both may disappear." he describes this part of himself as an infant, so i imagine its some primal aspect or innocence, but at the end of the song they are taking the plunge and destroying each other to reemerge as something new. its the same theme explored in 46&2 but where as that one seems more positive about integration, this one has a destructive feel. it does sound like he was in an abusive relationship with this part of himself.
sorry, i had a shower and couldnt help but go over the lyrics and really let it percolate. its been 20 years since i really looked at this song so closely. he gives the clue as to which jungian part of himself he is communicating with when he uses the gendered pronoun "she". he is talking to his anima, the albums title. i assume thats why the hostility, where as we treat our shadow as completely non existent we tend to be hostile towards our masculine and feminine sides depending on which gender we identify with. maynard would famously wear breasts at this time, including to give interviews and sometimes even wear a wig. its really fascinating that he was dealing with all of this 20 years before we collectively began to face it.
i want to say i really appreciate your interpretation of this song
No quarter from the Salival DVD! Maynard did a great job!

This is one of the Tool songs that saved me, aside from Reflection.
After having survived sexual and emotional abuse, I was able to release so much anger and sadness. All that I couldn’t express was expressed for me through this song.
I really hope you're doing better these days. I can't imagine the pain that you went through.
This album did that for me. I'm glad you made it safe 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Ariana, this song saved my life, as well. I was trapped in a physically and emotionally abusive marriage, that i do not doubt, would have ended in my demise. And I'm not exaggerating when I say, a single line from this song was all that kept me alive at times. I sympathize and empathize with you ❤
Beautiful comment. Hope You're in a better place.

"communication is so important in a relationship"
..... Cue analysis of Schism
Word!....
Yes. The perfect sequel
One of them, shism is, for my understanding, much more about ideology, that causes friction, in general. Took me a while to think about it that way but became ever more hardening when the little "church bells" shimed into the song. Ideology to divide us into different pieces that in its origin fit, since we are all just human first and foremost.
Yes! Yes! Yes! And don't try to count it out... we'll be here days.
@@Spasstiful as is with most of Tool’s catalogue, you can dissect the songs like an onion, each layer with a separate and distinct interpretation. You can look at the Schism as a division in a relationship, religion or as society due to lack of communication. None are wrong - none are right - that’s the nature of Tool.
the live version of this on Salival is GORGEOUS
My fave tool song and version

Like the vocal change in their cover of No Quarter
@@chrismeredith1169 Speaking of the salival album (live recordings, which no quarter is a bonus track on, and IIRC also has a weird hidden track at the end of the song) their live reimagining of pushit is one of my all time favorite songs!
I thought I was the only one that felt this way about that line!
For me this song has always been about a person's inner dialog. Somebody suffering through a horrible bout of depression. The self loathing. The need to be loved. Every gambit of human emotions. This song means what you want it to. As does all Tool songs.
Maynard in my opinion is probably the best male singer of the generation...so good ....everything TOOL is a masterpiece
Of all the reactions to this song I've watched, and there have been MANY, yours resonates with me the most. You've pointed things out not only in the vocal stylings, but the musical pitch and how they relate to expressing emotion. Very awesome reaction, thank you.

The pitch of his voice brings tears to my eyes. I just love it so much.
There may never be a vocalist like Maynard again.
Naturally, a Salival version reaction will be necessary and I am looking forward to it. You have had the most constructive response to this band out of all the reactionary videos I have watched. True story
This (Pushit), and Jimmy are probably my two favourite tracks on Ænima - overlooked seemingly because the record is so brilliant cover to cover.
Kirk won't let me listen to Jimmy either. Says it's a trigger song for him as well. . . so I think that may come at some point in analysis form?
@@TheCharismaticVoice That is understandable. It's a rough one topically, but can also feel cathartic to listen to.
Adam Jones gives voice to his instrument as much as Maynard does. You can just feel the punch of his power chords!

I completely agree and similar to my experience
The reason they found their real sound is because this is the first album with Justin Chancellor as the bassist. Paul D'Amour was the bassist on all the previous albums. He's a much bigger driving force behind their sound than most bassists in rock music, and he's the one that brought in that murky, sludge metal sound that really helped them set themselves apart from all other rock music.
My favorite band of all time. The first time I heard it was 9 months before AEnima was released, when they played 1+ hours as an opening act for Primus at one of their NYE shows. I could probably write at LEAST a couple full pages if I wanted to go into every detail I personally hear and feel from this song, but I'm sure that literally no one would want to read it. lol. Love it when vocal coaches hear Maynard’s genius for the first time. Most underrated singer ever.
why do people say that singers/bands/things are underrated? where does that statement come from? is it because mainstream media doesn't have Tool songs on repeat every 30 minutes (thank goodness) or is it because new fans have never heard of them before; or at least not until YT reaction videos started being a thing.
I don't think anyone has ever thought Maynard was not anything but a monster vocalist and song writer.
then he is the richest underrated singer ever...^^ like prince, michael jackson or elvis...^^

Omg Schism is definitely in my top 2 but with Vicarious. I am BEGGING for her analysis of those two. I keep waiting for a Schism video as well. Love all Tool, A Perfect Circle and Lucifer, but after all these years, Schism remains a favorite. ❤
Ultimately, she had here own demons, and we could only go so far before we were just gaslighting and triggering the shit out of each other, but time has passed, we can laugh about it now! ;c)
However, I began to accept that I needed to work on myself before I can work on a romantic relationship, and spent time reflecting on the same philosophies that both inspired Tool and was introduced to me by my ex.
I am somewhat familiar with Parabol/Parabola, but could do a detailed analysis of them.

I disagree with Kirk's take on the emotion of the two versions. I think that the live version's vocals are some of the most haunting I've ever heard. Really tugs at me way more than this version.
Same. Its more emotional.
Both versions are incredible in their own way
I find the album version more intense and angry, sung from when he was going through this experience...
My favorite characteristic is The Charismatic Kindness you always show!
Aww, thank you! And thank you for being at the premieres!
Orestes is a fav APC track of mine as well!
He does have amazing pitch.
He makes my spirit cry everytime I hear him say piece of mind.
I'm sending love to everyone who has gone through a relationship like this or is currently going through a relationship like this
Happy Birthday Kirk! Thanks for suggesting this for her!
She should’ve played the one where he mounted the fan. I’d love to hear her reaction to him singing through all that.
Hahahaha fucking classic
Yes! I bet that was that dude's highlight of his life. 😂
It's been 20 years since I listened to Tool. The next days now are going to be Tool-only . Thanks
Oh, you are very welcome!
20 years???? Were you a missing person? Lol the next few years should be tool-only
10 000 days followed by fear inoculum.... Enjoy=)
how did you manage to not listen to Tool for 20 years?

You should review - Avatar - Bloody Angel
Could you do a video on the grudge by tool. I really feel like it would be a great song for you to break down.
Now you just need to listen and dissect some Fear Inoculum. :) Also, your husband has EXCELLENT taste in music. :D
Can you do "FLEETWOOD MAC - Gold Dust Woman" ?
Would love to see you do move TOOL songs analyses. Jambi, Ticks & Leeches, The Pot, Pneuma, 7empest... etc 🤘🏼
What’s it gonna take?
Hello . My name is CJ . I just stumbled on to your reaction vids and I am grateful for them ! I am 48 and have been a fan since there inception . Seeing theIr 12 th live performance and 55 others in 7 countries up till the night we as a society moved indoors . The tour was cancelled the day before the bend , oregon show . Which they have refunded my vip tickets . Anyways as a very talented musician yourself . It's so refreshing to see you marvel in what Kurt , myself , and countless other fanatics know to be so impactful . As most of us fandom KNOW how genius this 4 piece colaboration is !!!! It's wonderful to see such an eloquent woman be moved how we are !!! So thank you . Ok to 2 of your questions . 2 they DO NOT WRITE their music together . 4 stubborn men figured out . Too many chiefs and no indians . Maynard only gets the music when the other 3 have completely finished their arrangements . Maynard writes and records ( in his home studio )the lyrics only then . He says it's a puzzle that he loves to figure out ! 2 the 10,000 days song is better known on first pressing of album as WINGS PART 2 . It also is a culminated 9th part - songs stretched over the 2 albums before 10,000 days . Kurt probably has heard this as well ! Ok have a great day and thank you once again.
Sorry I mispoke your husband's name . Kirk !!!
Having seen them live, twice, with all of that talent and the sum of their parts in full orchestration - I feel fortunate. Having your input of knowledge shine through with your passion for sound/production and human talent simply adds to the fortune. Thank you for sharing your talents and passion with the world. Cheers.
Seeing them live is such an unexplainable experience. You have to be there to grasp it.
Haven't seen them live since the early 2000s but from 95 to about 2005 I went at least 7/8 times. They are amazing live, every time.
Ohh yes! the album version!!. one of my Favourites and glorious track from Ænima
I think it is fair to say that this song is a MASTERPIECE. If I had to chooce one Tool song to rule them all, this is the one. This is greatness, and we are a bunch of lucky humans living at the same time as these titans of music🤩🙏🏻
Yes! I agree
Yes. The time 4 billion humans were deliberately killed. Joyous.
@@TH-yx5eb don’t be nuts😂
I disagree, it's not the Tool song that sits above all of them, I would say it's either Lateralus or Pneuma
🤟😛🤙💚
Your analysis makes me find a whole new appreciation for a band that I didn't know I could appreciate more. Thank you!
Aenima is such an amazing album.
On the off chance you see this comment, pressing and holding a or A on a phone will let you type æ or Æ
@@GiskardRevenlov
I know, but that's unnecessary.
This one and lateralus are in my opinion the best albums ever made.
YES SIR
@@gnarlydewd agreed!
I hope you listen to the live version as well. They are both amazing.
This has been my favourite Tool song since I first heard it 20 years ago. And now with your deep explanation, I love it even more. Thank you ☺️
This is what makes tool"heavy" it's the story more than the music....love it

Why I love Tool is that the instruments feed off and play off each other. Most bands are formula here’s xyz and the singing. But with them it’s like the instruments are having a lively conversation.
Awesome analysis!
Definitely one of the better tracks on this album.
I am now a fan.
Now that you've listened to the studio version,DEFINITLY listen to the Salival version.it takes a great song to amazing.
You're severely missing out my friend
better tracks of this album… wtf
Tool is a "perfect storm". And your reactions/analyzes are SO good to listen. Thank you so much for all of your videos!
And I do not know why I have not subbed before but now that has been corrected. :)
I grew up listening to this band...phenomenal drummer
🐙
You should do Alice in Chains - Love Hate Love live from like 1991 in Seattle, the pain in his voice in incredible.
I love this song so much. It’s very meaningful to me. I cried when I saw it performed live.
They played it at the February show I just saw and I cried my eyes out, its ao good
There is a concert where Maynard says “imagine loving someone so much that you had to kill them” and then they proceed to play this version of Pushit.
It definitely strikes me as being stuck in a bad relationship when killing someone you love is the only way out.
This is by far one of my favorite Tool songs.
damn sorry that's deep stay safe healthy and strong
Happy birthday Kirk.
One of the (MANY) incredible things to consider: the instrumentalists compose their parts to full completion before handing it over to Maynard to come up with his part. It's almost as if he "heard" this F'd up relationship in the music. 😳🤩
If most people see a straight path before them, I like to follow the sounds of those who move sideways through reality.
This wil be my first and only video telling Liz to actually just pull back and listen to the song.
Yeah you really gotta soak it in without interruption. One time is hardly enough. I've listened to it 1000 times and am still in awe.
I kind of agree. This song is an experience you need from beginning to end without interruption.
Back in the day I really wanted to see Tool when they toured with King Crimson (recommended listening). Just 2 phenomenal talents together
Was a great show. Was there in Portland.
my absolute favorite song of all time. I know it wasn't written to be interpreted this way - but this song has always been me talking to myself, and not letting the side of me that wants to die win.
You are quickly becoming my favorite channel ❤️
Alice In Chains- Man in the Box live at The Moore 1990. Don’t know if you’ll ever see this comment but it’s a great live performance 🤘🏽
Please, make it happen!
RIP Layne
Love, Hate, Love live is also fucking great!
Specialy the classic. "Bleed the freak"
@@romanmartin671 oh yes, my favourite!
Really into the love you’re giving to Danny Carey, one of the best drummers out there!
If you were my music teacher as a kid, I might not have become a cook. And I say that with the deepest of compliments.
I completely agree. I think the studio version captures the proper tone for the lyrics. That being said, I still enjoy the Salival version.
I've always been intrigued by how mellow he can get while being locked into the rock . And then unleash all of a sudden like he's gonna explode lol . Love it .
