one of the best quotes i've seen about TOOL. "There's such an even spread of genius across all the members" So well said. Great reaction!
ohh ohh, try this one on for size. "Every Tool song is better than...every other Tool song" - I really like this as well to express the overall genius of the band.
Funny you mention the lullaby thing. Tori Amos once said "This is Maynard from Tool. I call him up when I'm feeling terrible and he sings me lullabies." Video on youtube is titled "Tori Amos feat. Maynard James Keenan (Tool) - Muhammad, my friend" (the crowd noise is a bit much, but still a great performance)
1996 Sunken Meadow Gardens San Antonio Texas. I was there. He was up in front those days. Heard and read a lot of people speak of his anxiety or stage fright, but he’s a performer. I’ve seen TOOL four times, A Perfect Circle three times. Only two concerts he was in the back, in the shadows. Seen his live recordings with Pucifur and A Perfect Circle, he’s very fluid with his movements and performance. If he’s got stage fright I’ve not once seen it on stage. Speaking of fluid of movement the live Sober video and performance his movement mimics a marionette, symbolizing the loss of control of one self. Everything I’ve heard on the album I’ve heard on stage. Oddly enough, a lot of the strange sounds in the background is Maynard’s voice with different effects, as an instrument adding to the layers. Great video
I highly highly suggest “Culling Voices” from Tools latest album. A spectacular range of tonal beauty….it’s just…pure Maynard
+1 on that
This is 💯 true. His voice is unbelievable in that song. This version of Pushit is one of my favorite all time songs. Same with their cover of No Quarter.
Culling voices is quite a different TOOL song. While most songs are flexing their musical muscle, CV is a surprising showcase of Maynards ability. After all these years, he put down a mind blowing vocal performance on a sleeper tune. Love it so much. If you want to hear all the intricacies, subtleties, and character of Maynards voice, this is the song.
Lateralus, 46&2, schism, Descending are great Tool songs to react too!!!
The tabla percussion is done by Aloke Dutta, Danny's tutor in that regard. It's a duet of the two.
Came here to mention this.
I just saw Tool in concert for the 4th time on 01/19/2022 San Diego, I had 5th row floor seat center section… it was incredible as always…
I was there. Saw this song and felt your own energy my Tool brethern. Love you!!!!
He doesn't have anxiety or stage fright its an internet myth, he has said this himself.
@@JohnQDude he also said he spent many years at the front of the stage acting like an idiot dancing in his underwear and it's time for the others to take over. He also had a hip replacement that stops him from the old stomp he used to do.
Idk how that myth got started considering he literally did shows half naked and in drag early-on. No one with stage fright or anxiety would be doing shit like that.
The only think I’ve seen even close to confirming anything was a clip of him up on stage (at some sort of seminar looking thing, not the band) and he said that it’s all easy with the band on stage too but when it’s just himself he feels anxious, but then again idk if he was taking the piss or not.
He doesn’t want to be the face of the band and would rather the others take center stage. He’s just doing what feels right for him on a spiritual level. His stage getups also seem to mirror his sense of his own spiritual development
Could someone please show me where MJK has actually stated he has extreme stage fright to explain why he is positioned in the back? I don’t know how this rumor got spread so far. He is in three hugely successful groups. I have a hard time believing someone with such strong stage fright would put themselves in that position intentionally. He has gone on record to say that it is an acoustic choice so other monitors are not bleeding into his mic and also so he can easily see the other members. Someone please show me the interview where he says he has stage fright.
It doesnt exist because its bs. Its more that he doesnt see himself as a frontman. And i think he said on the JRE podcast he could not stand the thousands and thousands of flashes from cameras in his eyes when trying to focus and being in the moment.
@@viking_nor I agree. I hear a lot of reactors say that the Tool Army let them know that Maynard’s in the back because he has stage fright. Just some misinformation getting spread around.
That rumor is complete BS. Watch some of their old show footage and Maynard owns the stage. I read once that they started their current stage setup when they did a tour through Japan. The reason they like the setup is so that they can easily see each other for timing purposes
I've read somewhere that Maynard decided he didn't want to be "front and center" because he believed every band member was equally important. He didn't want everyone to focus on him. May also be a rumor, but more plausible than the stage fright, because we've all seen him in past performances and in interviews. That man does not have stage fright.
From the horse’s mouth:
“I couldn’t hear the music. The isolation wasn’t proper in the mic. I was having a harder time with the sound in the front.”
This is my favorite TOOL song, this version especially!! The studio version is a masterpiece and you must give it a listen as well
I'm always jealous of people, on their first listen to any Tool song... Sure you pick out something new, each time you listen... But that first time it touches your ears... It's such a wonderful gift.
One of their best works… unbelievably warm and intimate
My fave Tool is Disposition - Reflection - Triad
After watching them perform this masterpiece in its original version in San Diego last week I must say at 19:00 three musical maestro looked at each other and visually say to each other "let's lift this to another universe" and I witnessed this while I wept. #truth #willendnootherway #pushit
There are a couple really good quality fan made videos of them performing this song live. Maynard is dressed in drag and by this song is almost naked. He does in fact still have on a bra.
Third Eye from this was a monster all in it's self...Amazing in every way!
and let us not forget this is LIVE !!
MJK is my favorite vocalist not for his deep and thought provoking lyrics or vocal range and pitch (witch is awesome by the way). Singing live like he does is inspiring. But what I like most is his ability to integrate his voice into the music like a instrument and with so much emotion. The talent in this band is multifaceted genius.
Been anxiously waiting for you to do more Tool. Plus it's always a pleasure to your beautiful face on my feed. :)
Check out the Pushit fan incident, he keeps singing after the fan is held in his grip, it's the studio version of Pushit live btw
He said he stands at the back because that way he doesn't pick up the amplifier noise when he plays with Pucifer hes front and center with no issues
Best reaction/analysis on UA-cam. I was at a concert in 2004 when they played this version. It was one of the greatest pieces of music I have ever heard live.
That ending though .. 👌 😔
Ooh, glad this is the salival version. So good
Great reaction video 👏🏼👏🏼
You must see this band live they are on tour now... GO!!! Great reaction!
Can't wait to see these guys in March 🤘🤘
Beautiful reaction ❤
From the moment this song starts until 12:51, I’m effortlessly entranced. The second half of this song is good, don’t get me wrong. But it’s the build up to this point that makes it memorable for me. Like you’re riding an elevator beyond the suspected norm and just keep rising more and more. Makes the drop more impactful as it goes but I crave that rising feeling. Thanks for the reaction and insight.
A friend I went to high school with is the lead vocalist of a band named Fates Warning since about 1987 or so. I believe he is an awesome vocalist. His name is Ray Alder, he also released a solo album last year. please listen to Fates Warning's chapter IV Quietus from the song Ivory Gate of Dreams.
That sounds awesome. I'll give it a listen
Yes!!! you reacted to the Live version, sooooo much better than the recorded version!!!
The performance anxiety is just a rumor or joke passed on a long time ago. I feel the lean into sharp notes is more an emotionally charged response to the content and vibe of the song. It brings you into such a state, mentally, that it is just a raw response as he sings.
Also, funnily enough, if you listen to the studio version of "Annihilation" from the album Emotive, he does whisper through that whole song.
He seemed confident to me when I saw this live. Thousands of people floored.
Old 2002 performance last concert last song of the Lateralus Tour. Gotta watch video title something like Lateralus 2002 epic last concert or something. I think it was the best theatrical performance I ever saw him do.
Pretty sure Maynard is fine at the front, choosing to be behind drums is a decision based on acoustics, he hears the band better . Check out some of Maynards performances with Puscifer, his stage presence is great.
nope, it's so the focus is on the music and not him, they all wear in ear monitors so it doesn't matter where they are acoustically
They were writing their songs as a group for their earlier albums. I think it was about Lateralus that changed.
Ok so the video is title Tool Lateralus Live (Last 2002 concert). All you gotta do is look up Lateralus Live and a video should pop up of a black figure but it's just Maynard painted black. It's a must video.
Glad a few comments already mentioned it..anxiety is a bullshit rumor. One of the greatest live performances from all the guys. They are the GOATS..great reaction 🤘
Two of my favorite live Tool recordings come from the Opiate CD. Cold and Ugly and Jerk Off. Seriously. 1990 ish... vintage Tool. Before they got big. You can tell the shit is there with them. I was at the show... lol
I'm after aenema they definitely started experimenting with a more orchestral sound
I’ve seen Maynard say he stands in the back because he can hear himself better. There is a video of this. His face is painted white, he’s wearing a bra and his posture is definitely not what you’d call technically correct.
About that point where Maynard goes sharp. You may want to give it another listen and check out the lyrics. Know that I will choke until I swallow etc. He seems to be doing that on purpose. Just a thought.
Maynard has absolutely ZERO anxiety on stage, about performing his art anyway.
May-nerd is how I pronounce it...no pun intended.
Peace friend!
✌️🇨🇦🤘
You can see this performance, look up 1998 push it performance….
We need more TOOL by the way!! lol
I would love to see Tool do an acoustic set someday, or something a little stepped down and focused on his vocals more.
Not Tool but Puscifer’s Parole Violator has a couple of acoustic tracks at the end sitting around a camp fire, it’s really awesome, it would be cool to see that done with the Tool guys too.
@@jambulance I'll have to look into that 😊
May-nerd! Please!
MayyyyyyNard
mjk sings lullabies to Tori Amos watch the video tori amos with mjk muhammad my friend
Btw! The second a in Maynard is pronounced as an e sound “maynerd”
I promise I wasn’t going to say anything, but you said it wrong so many times 😂
May-nerd 😀
his name is pronounced "may nerd"
Circa 1997-98
Y’all maynerd is a Soprano
I'd like to dispell the rumors about Maynard having stage anxiety. There are countless hours of footage of Maynard being up front and having no trouble doing it. He's stated in several interviews that his reasons for being at the back of the stage, next to Danny, are ALL ENTIRELY for the benefit of the sound. It virtually eliminates any chance for feedback from the guitar monitors for example. He's never said in any interview anything about having stage fright or anxiety about being on stage. I don't know who or how that dumb shit got started, but it's entirely incorrect
Absurd that its live really
May nerd. Not may nard lol.
Try invincible by Tool. His newer voice sound, more natural sounding
I can't get over the way you say Maynard. Can't do it.
Not having the ability to hold or even identify a note, I can't comment on the technical side, but I feel he is imparting emotion, from everything I have heard of this song it is about personal experience and it is not nice.
Here's is an amazing song by the most Epic band out there Epica. check their omega alive version of Kingdom of Heaven part 3 this performance is not only breathtaking it is amazing with so many EPIC events during the performance including acrobats hanging on a chandelier with flames, the keyboardist not only has a keyboard that spins he also does a solo on an upright piano that is on fire literally later he has an epic solo/duet with a strap on curved keyboard with the Guitarist. add Simone's beautiful voice and Marks Growls every part of me was focused on the entire performance on a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 30. Here's a link to it ua-cam.com/video/BdBCVMD8TiM/v-deo.html
oh... it's the Salival version.
oh well.
Another epic performance is Lovebites Swan Song with Chopin Intro ua-cam.com/video/WBhtqgiXEA4/v-deo.html these ladies are top notch artists I think all 5 are virtuoso's especially the 2 lead guitarists Midori and Miyako who composed this song and has also played Piano since age 3 classically trained the drummer Haruna in my opinion is the best female drummer I have heard her double bass is unequalled she can do a 2 hour show non stop she beats those drums like they took her boyfriend away.
Am I the only one who cringes every time she says “May-Nard”?
Please quit pronouncing his name that way. It’s one syllable not two.
May-nerd. Not May-naard.
awful nasal tone here
Agreed. I had a cold at the time of recording this video 🙂
@@morethanjustavocalcoach I was not talking about you.
Talk to much listen the stop and talk. This gets annoying cuz 90% of us know exactly how Maynard sings what the songs are so you're reacting to an audience that already knows all the s*** you're talking about. But you do you I came across you on accident
You don't even say his name right do some research before you start butchering somebody's name
