The voice you hear reciting is that of Johanna Kurkela, Tuomas' wife. The spoken part is from Romeo and Juliet and is inscribed on the urn that carried Shoemaker's ashed to the moon. As a side trip, watch Floor doing pure opera "O Mio Babbino Caro". ua-cam.com/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/v-deo.html
It should also be mentioned that Johanna Kurkela has 7 solo albums and one of the hit 1st place on the finish album sales list (and another hit 3rd), is the vocalist of Auri side-project (her, Tuomas and Troy, so two from Nightwish) and is also featured in two Sonata Arctica songs (another finnish band). So definitely a respected singer in her own right, I guess it's all about connections, similarly to how Floor did the music video end credits for Sabaton's Christmas Truce (their drummer is married to Floor).
What a beautiful tribute to Eugene Shoemaker and an ode to space & the planets. Tuomas throughout this current album Human:||: Nature - he has challenged himself, every band member instrumentally and vocally. No orchestra was used in the first one but used beautifully in the second side. No two songs are the same. The only consistent theme is humans & nature and how they exist and interact together. Enjoy your senses to be awakened!!
One of my favorite songs and video. I consider this to be one of their mini-masterpieces, just after the big three of GLS, Poet, and Greatest Show on Earth. For me this song is not only about Shoemaker but also an ode to our human need to explore and to encourage us to go out into the universe. Floor has said that Tuomas really challenged all three of the singers in his compositions for them. Spoken word section is a quote from Romeo and Juliet, spoken by Tuomas's wife Johanna Kurkela, and is inscribed on the capsule holding a portion of his ashes. Floor has said that she wasn't happy with the operatic part at the end despite Tuomas signing off on what they had recorded in the studio. She went home and worked on it until she had perfected it and we have this masterpiece. The vocals, music and the video with the earth and sun disappearing below the moon's horizon is just so epic and makes me want to return to working on manned space flight. Can't wait for Harvest.
Every single time i listen to this song .... the end hits me and i become goosebumps and shivers ... every f... single time ... and i know what is coming ...
This song is f.. amazing! When I heard it - it was a love from the first sight! I love whole album, I think it's the most mature and well-thought album of Nightwish. But there were songs that I had to listen a few times to really fell in love. "Pan" is a good example - at first I thought it was good, but a little bit to chaotic. But then it grows on me to the point that it's probably my favourite of the album. But "Shoemaker" - loved it from the very beginning and still loving every second of this amazing piece!
Auri is a brilliant collaboration of Tuomas, his wife Johanna and Troy. It's a completely different vibe from Nightwish, but equally brilliant. Two sides of the genius coin that is Tuomas. His compositions make everybody better and they make his compositions come to life!
@@chadbennett7873 It's not really two pages. It's the raw material Tuomas uses to make metal songs. So Nightwish without Metal, just like Floor is reducing her songs to Pop.
It's not completely in 4/4. Of course not - it's Nightwish Nice reaction. Floor classical: O mio babbino Caro Ave Maria (Schubert) with Marco - will bring tears to your eyes particularly at the end.
It's still perhaps the best single album I've ever heard. The instrument you asked about during the asteroid scene is the bouzouki, at least that's what Troy is using to make those background noises. They've hooked it up with a mic to make it a pseudo-electric bouzouki. It's a Greek lute instrument originally, which somehow made its way to the British Isles sometime in the past. About researching for the future songs... Well, it's not strictly required for any of the rest ones. One thing to note that the seventh song, Procession, might be a bit confusing if you haven't heard The Greatest Show On Earth. It could be thought of as an epilogue to TGSOE, or an alternative ending. Though this whole Human Nature album is like the actual sequel to TGSOE, it's just that Procession continues chronologically from where TGSOE left off (with potentially a giant timeskip, but anyways). The Greatest Show tells the story of our planet from the very beginning, while the various songs of Human Nature focus on just the parts where mankind has had some sort of presence on Earth. Every one of the songs is part literal and part metaphor, with Harvest being heavier on the metaphor side. So in that sense if you want to make a 1st time reaction where you "get" the song then you might need to read up about the possible meanings of the lyrics.
The background droning sound is not bouzouki, it is Troy with his guitar and e-bow. If you want to see and hear him play with those watch Kiss While Your Lips Are Still Red live at Wembley Arena.
Eugene Shoemaker is the only human with his remains in space. Some of his Ashes are interred in Shoemaker Crater on the moon, in a capsule with the same passage by Shakespeare that was in the video. He was integral in space exploration & planetary science, so NASA and all humanity owed him that honor. :)
we surely don't actually mind watching you and others talking for half an hour or more about nightwish! for real tho we in nightwish army love to see others dive into complex world Toumas and the band created and its not something one can express their thoughts in a half an hour or even 2 hours video for sure! so don't worry about the lenght of your Vids man we will watch it all no matter what! also love the bloopers and outtakes in the end alays cracks me up! keep doing the good work and have a good day!
They had a probe going to the moon to map the surface and included 1 ounce of Eugene's ashes in a small urn engraved with the Romeo and Juliet quote After the probe had finished its job it was crashed onto the moon The final shot on the video is supposed to illustrate Eugene's view of the Earth/
What a great reaction - and I like your interpretation of the lyrics. You are right - it is phenomenal music. The band members are sooo talented, hopefully you will also do older tracks. But for now keep going on Human Nature…
That wailing sound is Troy, playing his guitar with an e-Bow. The "dream-like dulcimer" is what you hear at the beginning, and on occasion throughout. "Laudato si" ("praise be to you") is ancient Italian, from a canticle written by St. Francis of Assisi in the 14th century. (How does Tuomas even _know_ this stuff??)
I believe the the middle guitar part visuals represent the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (co-discovered by Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker with David Levy), after it had been torn into smaller chunks by Jupiter's gravity. You can see the outgassing haze from the cometary bodies, as the Sun heats up the material. The comet hit the Jovian upper atmosphere in 1994, and was the astronomical superstar of the year, with visible light and infrared telescopes glued on Jupiter.
The ashes were part of a mission that was intentionally crashed into the moon to study the dust cloud it produced, so it was basically just more mass. Relatively minor impact on the mission to do it, and one AMAZING story.
Geweldig nummer.
Correct, let me be a bit more specific. The symbol which represents nature (the round one) originaly means god or heaven (or above). When you combine the fact that thuomas and the rest of nightwish is not religous and god were ment to be the source of all existance you can interpret that in this context it represents the force of nature. (At least that is my interpretation) The "human" symbol is a comination of the word "man" and the word "woman" wich is not originaly oriantated but mirrord. Maybe an error but i believe its on purpose and underlines the dependency between human and nature
Without a doubt, Shoemaker is one of Tuomas' greatest masterpieces, especially in combination with this mystical lyric video. This combination gives the song a size that makes you feel as small as a grain of sand in the desert. This song was actually not intended for live performances, because Tuomas feared that it would lose exactly this size on stage. In my opinion, it is precisely these fears that have materialised. It would devour vast sums of money to be able to create this gigantic size on a stage.Btw; Laudato Si dates back to the 13th century and to St. Francis of Assisi, who wrote the Canticle of the Sun. Its title and opening words are 'Laudato Si'.
Deze is echt de moeite. Floor laat hier haar mooie range zien👌 prachtsong.
You could also say that it is about the human desire to understand and explore the universe... Just like Levi Shoemaker... That we want to join him on his travels... Not just the moon or his ashes literally
I count that section as: 4/4, 2/4, 4/4, 4/4. That's what makes the most sense to me, keeps the accents on the 1, but you can count it other ways too. I suppose you could count it as 1 measure of 14/4? ;-)
The strange instrument you can hear in the beginning (and later in the background) is the hammered dulcimer (google that) and I could imagine Troy is playing that, but not sure about that as there another multi instrumentalist in the band🤓 BTW like the bloopers😁
One thing that I don't think many people have realised, Laudato si, ad astra is also a very clever pun. As you might have expected from the subject matter of their previous album, Tuomas, I believe, is taking a dig at the Bible. Psalms 148 contains the line: "Praise him sun and moon, praise him all you shining stars". Tuomas has twisted that round to make it an homage to Shoemaker.
I think the song is as great an honor as having one's ashes spread out over the moon. Too bad he did not experience any of it while he was still alive :-)
Great reaction, one comment in case noone posted it yet - The second half of the album, Nature, is entirely orchestral and there is a beautiful video (produced by Sensei Music Videos) that accompanies all of the tracks. This was approved by Tuomas and I would really recommend that you use it when reacting to Nature. It really elevates it even more (if that's even possible, it is incredible!). The video is here "ua-cam.com/video/RnOdQ5WNZJk/v-deo.html" There are several reactions to it on YT, so it doesn't look like there are any issues with watching it.

I would simply say that "Shoemaker" is one of the best Symphonic Metal songs of all time. I get goosebumps every time...
If you’re talking about the droning sound in the background it is Troy playing his paul Reed Smith electric guitar using an ebow

I really like when Floor sings with the male choir. So beautiful.

If the end of this song doesn't give you goosebumps, nothing will. Absolutely beautiful. Totally epic!
I hear this song and weep every time. Those vocals are simply divine.
Yes, it is good line about the ‘garish sun’. He wasn’t a bad writer that Shakespeare; had his moments.

You will meet the unknown voice again as the main singer in Tuoma's solo project Auri:
AURI - Night 13 (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)

Technically, this song is a requiem.
The ending is an homage to the opening of "2001 A Space Odyssey."
