Clever solution. If you know someone who has a pipe cutter and pipe threader you can customize the height. Looking forward to how you install the lights.
Scotch Test Dummies My dad was a pipefitter so I grew using those tools, but don’t have any now. PTFE tape will help keep the fitting tight and prevent corrosion from seizing the threads. You’d have to trim excess tape so it wouldn’t show.
Cool idea Scott. They look nice too - kind of minimalist. Its all about the bottle collection. Although I built shelves in my den. I used wood. I did years ago use pipes in the basement to hang clothes racks from the center beam.
Cool design. I have 6 shelves with cabinet doors for privacy from prying eyes. Like you, I also like to display the tubes and boxes behind the bottles.
Love the shelves scott, i also need to get something to put my stuff on. I have bottles everywhere now. After this video i think i might try to build something instead of buying book shelves. Thanks
Looks great, Scott. Much better than paying $800 at Ikea. I'm playing around with the idea of trying to build a locking liquor cabinet that's wall-mounted, thought that would be a cool project.
Great video Scott! Shelves looks awesome, I plan on doing something very similar for my home bar in the near future. Nice to see your explanation of the process
there is a component list in the description for the video. Check Ebay and Amazon for the 3/4 inch black pipe as well as the elbows and wall/floor flanges for the best prices. You'll save a lot of money over buying at Lowes or Home Depot.
This is the best video! Thank you so much! My husband and I built our shelves this weekend and followed your instructions almost exactly (went with 3 shelves because we have a toddler who can reach for things so we wanted our bottom shelf higher). I have a question about the 2x10s-why not 2x12s? It feels like the distance between the wall and the shelves and the shelves and the vertical pipes is significant with the 2x10s. We have ours 1.5” from the wall and about 1.5” from the front pipes. Curious as to why you didn’t go wider. Thanks, again!
I should have used 2x12’s! I actually did a part two to this video where I expanded the shelves and used 2x12’s. No worries though, all you have to do is put a couple of 2x4’s in as Roses and then slide them back to cover that gap.
Definitely gonna consider building these instead of purchasing more bookshelves myself. Was there much style variety available for the piping & t-joints? Did you consider any other shelving materials besides the 2x10s?
not too much variance. if you know a plumber or someone with the pipe cutting and threading tools, you can customize all you want. go to lowes or home depot to see what you like. thanks Kyle!
@@ScotchTestDummies thank you. I built a 2 tier shelf based on your video. I used the mentioned method 4x4, 2x4, and 2x6. With 30+ bottles on 1 shelf..it seemed a little sketchy..lol
Great looking shelves! I have been thinking about this as my cabinet that I bought off wayfair or some discount site no longer can hold the amount of bottles I have. Where is this located within your house? Is storing whiskey in a well sunlit area an issue? Where I store it now gets a lot of sun in the mornings, but my cabinet is fully enclosed, but open shelving would change that.
David Lavin Light is bad for whiskies, wines, and beers, but the heat from the sunlight is even worse. The darker and cooler ( room tempish) the better.
Agreed with Eric. This is in my basement and there is a window just off to the side. I even put a tint on that window to lower the light coming in, and its covered by a shade as well. The basement also helps as its generally cooler.
That's a great look and you can't get much stronger! Quick question. You said you tighten the T's down as far as you can go but did you have any level issues on the shelves. I know pipe thread will tighten up but if there all not threaded the same.........I could see myself counting the turns to get it all perfect. lol
Do you have links to the products used? I'd like to replicate it! Have you thought about raising the back like 3 inches to make the back row more visible?
i was just looking on ebay the other day for more parts to build some more. Just search for 3/4 inch black iron pipe. you'll need whatever length sections i.e. 12" 18" 20" etc. and then 3/4 inch Tee sections to join them. Throw in floor flanges 3/4 inch black also for the wall and floor intersects. I like the idea of the little shelf on the back, I may have to try that. I would just add that to the existing shelf and would be great to but the back bottles on.
bourbons and ryes (full already), world whiskies and peated, all other scotch, and miscellaneous on the top due to the miscalculated height needed. keep in mind you also have storage on the floor underneath the shelves and i've got duplicates and rums/cognacs there.
Scotch Test Dummies I forgot to mention that the shelves look great! I’m glad you mentioned the (critical) point of screwing the flanges into the stud behind the drywall. Nothing like running a screw into nothing but drywall and air and later wondering why everything collapsed. The black pipe is great too because it’s cheap and rugged and you can get all sorts of different fittings if you want to really customize your shelves. The only bad thing about the pipe is you have to have the proper length and it has to be threaded. Many hardware stores or home stores will cut and thread pipe for you, but that can get expensive if you have a lot of cuts to make. If you have the pipe cut, be cure to clean off all the cutting oil residue inside and out. The cutting oil can be toxic and it’s frequently made from recycled motor oils and animal renderings (fats) that aren’t conducive to domestic tranquility. My father was a master electrician for 42 years and I inherited his pipe vice, dies, reamer, and cutters so I’m probably going to build a set of these pipe shelves myself. Thank you for posting this video. It was very interesting!
i use just simple card boxes to store my whisky ... i don´t care about "display" thats for "showoff people" a 30-100-500 Dollar whisky won´t get better in a bottle (opposite will get worse in daylight)
I like how you're no-nonsense, factual, to the point, and easy to listen to. No "please subscribe" and all that nonsense. We need videos like this!
thanks Aiming Wanderously!
Nearly 3 years old and still one of the best videos I have found for DIY whisky/whiskey shelves
thanks Mel!
I just watched this again. Ive always liked the look of the shelves and im thinking of building these. Watching part 2 now to see whats up
thanks Bill!
Well done, Scott. Needing more shelves for your whiskey collection is a clear sign you are blessed.
haha thanks Bud!

anyone know a good plumber?!
Scotch Test Dummies My dad was a pipefitter so I grew using those tools, but don’t have any now. PTFE tape will help keep the fitting tight and prevent corrosion from seizing the threads. You’d have to trim excess tape so it wouldn’t show.
did not use any tape.
Scotch Test Dummies You’d really only need it if you were pumping whisky through the pipes.😏 Hmm, whisky on tap!
Cool idea Scott. They look nice too - kind of minimalist. Its all about the bottle collection. Although I built shelves in my den. I used wood. I did years ago use pipes in the basement to hang clothes racks from the center beam.
Thanks Martin! I've got a metal pipe hanging in my storage room for clothes too!
Good job, Scott! You really know how to hold your wHisky...
muwahahahahahah
Scott, I've seen shelving like that. Great idea for bottles and expansion .
Love the color of the pipes and stain. Good review.
Thanks Keith!
Great video. Put something like these up for the wife in the family room. super cost effective.
yes they are, thanks Jason!
Cool design. I have 6 shelves with cabinet doors for privacy from prying eyes. Like you, I also like to display the tubes and boxes behind the bottles.
those are probably duplicate bottles, I don't think there are any empty boxes. I usually store the bottle in the box just to protect from light.
Excellent idea Scott and well put together. Super simple but a really cool look.
exactly what i thought too. thanks Loknes.
I love watching you talk about and laying pipe;)
you must have missed the par about 18inches...
AHHAHAHAHA
Excellent job. Very sturdy shelves, plus they look great.
Cheers!
thanks Raster!
Love the shelves scott, i also need to get something to put my stuff on. I have bottles everywhere now. After this video i think i might try to build something instead of buying book shelves. Thanks
after considering options of what to buy, i decided to diy it!
B Lam Purloined (stolen) milk crates held together with zip ties work for a while.....it’s ugly as Hell though
i like to use the term "re-acquisition"
Eric Schwab thanks , but my wife would kill me.
Looks great, Scott. Much better than paying $800 at Ikea. I'm playing around with the idea of trying to build a locking liquor cabinet that's wall-mounted, thought that would be a cool project.
thanks Kyle, your cabinet as a whole other beast.
is a whole other beast
Yeah I suppose it would be, haha. I don't have the money or the skills for it unfortunately.
Dude. I love videos like this. Thank you so much. I hope you are able to fill them up quick.
they almost are. I underestimated my need, hence the thought already about expansion.
Nicely done! I did something along the same lines, but without the extra supports. Has a nice industrial/rustic look! Prost!
thanks Guys, yeah due to the weight factors i ran the support to the floor. I've seen a lot of shelves similar just attached to the wall.
Those look great Scott. Really like the clean industrial look. I’m wanting to do something to display some of the collection so very timely.
thanks Jason!
Thanks! My fiancee and I hope to buy a house in the next year or so and I'll probably use this template for my collection. Cheers!
thanks crump!
Great video Scott! Shelves looks awesome, I plan on doing something very similar for my home bar in the near future. Nice to see your explanation of the process
thanks Sean, send me a picture if you do something similar.
Could you share a link for the pipes your ordered? Really love your design and want to do it for my new house

thanks for watching mosesumike!
Those are really nice!! I’ll be putting those in for my overflow out in my man cave. Cheers!
Do it and let me know how they turn out.
Cool. Now looking forward to "How to light your whisky shelves" 🤓
ohhh, good one.
Light strips Amazon 😁
Looks great, Scott. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

Nice work Scott!
Thanks Aimee!

Absolutely love it! Great solid design thank you for sharing.
Check out the part 2. Already expanded and made a couple modifications.
Thanks Scott. I seem to be running out of space again, this will help allot. Cheers - TonightsPoison

Only 2 holes line up on the flange with any 1 stud. What did you use for the other 2 holes? Same #10 screws?
left them empty. Two screws into sheetrock won't do anything the two into studs won't!

Ummm, no.
