  • I took my Tesla Model Y Long Range on another road trip this time with a Mustang Mach-e California Route 1 edition. I was very surprised with the range and the performance of the Mach-e over the Tesla.

    Terrific in both concept and execution! Getting a newbie in an EV and on a longish road trip is the best way to inform others about the realities of EVs. Too many have been taken in by the lies and misinformation about EVs. Great job shining a light on that.
    Couple of points (I’m 66, have had my 2021 Tesla Model 3 SR+ for one year, ~13,800 miles): I never use the estimated mile display, only the percentage. The mileage number is too variable. The percentage displays exactly what is in the battery. Plus, when you charge, you charge to a specific percentage (SOC: state of charge), and all the info on driving uses SOC, not mileage. It’s much more accurate, and therefore less nerve wracking and less frustrating.
    I just got back from a one day road trip of ~600 miles from Sacramento to Portland OR. Two days later, did the same one day trip home. In my SR+, which many say is not a long road trip car. I say BS to that. I have another road trip planned, from CA-KY coming up in a couple weeks. In the SR+. EZ PZ.
    As for charging v gassing up, it is different (speaking with 50 years of ICE experience). But, it’s a difference of mindset. And I’d argue it is a difference where charging is better than gassing. It’s more relaxed, safer, and encourages regular breaks. My long road trips involve ~20 min charging stops every 90-120 minutes. By the time I get back to the car from restroom break, grabbing a snack, stretching my legs for a couple minutes, my car is ready to go.
    THAT’S what needs to be emphasized! I’ve taken convinced ICE adherents and EV scoffers on road trips and they’ve agreed - EVs are a different, viable, and better choice.
    Great work as always!

      I think we simply have a difference of opinion. I think in the vast majority of cases, “range” is a red herring that people futz over much more than it warrants. Sort of along the lines of those who state, “I won’t get an EV until there are the same number of charging stations as there are gas stations.” It’s a silly notion.
      Driving an EV does shift things a bit in terms of expectations on road trips, but in reality, they are minor shifts and easily accommodated. The first trip my family (2 adults, 2 teenage boys) made in the M3 was ~500 miles, Sacramento to San Diego. During the summer, with temps at 100+ degrees F. We all found the trip (first ever without our trusty Sienna minivan and first ever in an EV) to be comfortable and pleasant. So much so my wife, very EV hesitant and fraught with “range anxiety,” traded her Camry LE in on a VW ID.4.
      Anyway, I’m glad to hear you enjoy your Teslas! I’m looking forward to my upcoming cross country trip in the SR+.
      May you have many miles of safe and enjoyable travel.

There are destination chargers and charge at a very low charge (J-1772 at 6.0 kW to 15kW). I selected Tesla because of the Supercharging network (150 kW to 250 kW). Battery deg is highest at the start and should, they say, level out as time goes on. You might try, if this works for how much range you need on a daily basis ofc, charging more frequently to a lower SoC, eg charge to 60% and use to 40% every day vs charge to 100% and use to 10% every 5 days. Charging at a lower amps can apparently help too, my home charger will do 32 amps and I can recover my daily usage in 2-4 hours at that speed but since I heard that advice I usually charge at 5-8 amps which takes 8-12 hours to charge up but as I spend most of that time asleep it's no big deal :-D Lastly I've seen folks recommend switching the display to % battery remaining vs miles so you don't obsess over that potential range rating.

    My ford diesel SUV gets vastly different mileage when I’m driving it vs when my wife is driving it. I try to maintain 140 to 150km and my wife drives a bit slower at around 80 to 90. So the notion that gas cars don’t vary at the beginning of this video is a off. Drag increases with the square of velocity and you must increase the energy output to overcome this multiplying drag increase. So the atmospheric drag on any car driving at 100 is 4 times that of a car driving at 50. It’s not double, it’s quadruple the amount. Plus there might be be more drag from the drive train at higher speeds that must be over com in an ICE car with hundreds of moving and wearing parts

    25:33 I think it's important to note that this isn't Ford's first EV rodeo. They've made multiple EVs over the years. In fact, I'm currently restoring two 20+ year old factory built Ford electric vehicles. That being said, Ford still had a number of lessons learned from this Mach-E iteration. They appear to have undersized the CCS harness, resulting in less than ideal charging speed spikes. I think they're going to want to take a close look at what GM does with the Cadillac LYRIQ because the Mach-E really should be able to rip at close to 500 A charging current (150+ kW) from 0% to 50% battery. At that point, in combination with the Mach-E's efficiency, it would be as fast of a road tripping car as most Teslas.

    Efficiency is gonna be the measuring stick (miles/ kwh)... Mach-e has a 91kwh battery, model y has a 75kwh battery..
    Kwh used for the trip will tell you which was more efficient... not a guess-o-meter of displayed range. Compare the kwh used between the two during the trip, and voila'... you have your 'efficiency' winner😉

      I completely agree. I own a 2022 MYLR and love the car, but the range estimate is trash. Tesla can do much better. But at the end of the day the cars have different size battery packs, need to compare energy used for the same distance traveled. That is what matters.

    This is a perfect example of why range is so important, and I don't get why some people are simultaneously critical of both the public charging infrastructure and non-Tesla EV automakers pushing for 400 to 500 mile ranges. The latter addresses the former.

  • @newscoulomb3705
    @newscoulomb3705 2 роки тому

    12:43 There are two components to this. The first, Tesla uses a very optimistic EPA testing cycle that most other automakers do not. In the real world, it equates to about a 15% difference. I don't see Tesla ever wanting to change that because, right now, it makes them appear to be the leaders in terms of range. The second is that Tesla's built-in range estimator is based on a simple formula of multiplying current battery energy times that optimistic EPA-rated range. The only way to get an accurate range estimate in a Tesla is to load the trip navigation, which does a better job (is more accurate) at estimating range than most of the other EVs that use active range estimators (like the Mach-E).

    All EV’s have a potential range if you drive in a certain way, in particular weather conditions. Same with fossil cars. You can achieve the Tesla numbers if you try. I had an I-pace and never got close to the Jaguar quoted numbers. Just asked the manufacturers to be honest.

    a 200 mile road trip shouldn't worry anyone. As far as FSD, I would agree for Tesla, it's not worth the 10k cost... The Mach E on the other hand it's free for the first 3 years and man, it's awesome!

  • @thiswillnotendwell4402
    @thiswillnotendwell4402 2 роки тому

    Tesla’s have a large buffer beyond zero purposely coded into its range estimations. Best to take both these vehicles on a full charge to dead on one trip. You also have to account that both vehicles need to use or not use A/C and drive the same speed. Also one cannot drift behind the other longer since less wind resistance increases range. Also account for tire/wheel sizes especially if they are aftermarket. I do find it funny people who don’t hardly take long road trips worrying about needing more than 300 miles. I drove 300 miles in my M3 LR in California at an average speed of 75 and still got home with 15% SOC. Range is important but there are other important details like battery longevity, safety, charging speed/battery size, and charging network that are perhaps more important. Larger battery packs get you longer range but take longer to charge. Tesla’s give more range with less battery, faster changing, and a much better charging network. Either way, test drive as many as you can before you buy.

    While unrelated to Tesla, regarding your comments on dating - as an engineer - I kept reminding myself I only need one - so the odds are in my favor. With that, if you do proper relationship math, you do have to move on pretty quickly once you realize it isn't going to work out - especially post-college. I had that conversation with a young (at the time) lady that I really liked - after off and on again/casual dating for a couple years - I simply pointed out that she was 28 (I was 27). If I'm not "the one" we best figure that out sooner rather than later (shit or get off the pot). If not, let's say it takes her another 6 months to 1 year to find the person she might marry - logically, a decision to marry might take a couple years of serious dating, followed by 6 months (or more) engagement. So, likely at least 3 years away from marriage at that point (assuming things go well). That would put her at 31 or 32 (she wanted kids eventually). I knew that was getting up there, but I later found out that doctors consider any pregnancy after 35 as "high risk." Either way, I was ready for something more serious. I'm not sure whatever happened to her, I hope she found the love of her life eventually. The next lady I dated, we married pretty quickly (she was already 30 and was very keen on finding a partner) - we have been together for nearly 20 years and have 3 kids together.

    We tried FSD in our MYP for a few months and it continually had problems staying on the freeway when a lane was turned into an offramp. We did a road trip from San Francisco to Sedona and the phantom braking happened no less than 30x (only 10x on the way to Sedona but a full 20x on the way back) and eventually just got fed up and manually drove the rest of the road trip. FSD was just lackluster and autopilot was really disappointing. We've had our Tesla for about eight months now and don't even use either feature for, largely, fear of the phantom braking. Scares the absolute crap out of our little puppy and it's just not worth the trauma. Tesla really needs to fix that crap ... it happens far, far too frequently. Hell, 1x is too frequent but 20x from Sedona to San Francisco was beyond unacceptable =/

    At 8:20 you show something that doesn’t work in germany although it is being sold here - in slow moving traffic on a motorway you are legally obliged to form a rescue lane between the leftmost lane and the one next to it by the left lane traffic going as far left as possible and the one next to it to the right as far possible to give rescue and police vehicles easy access to the beginning of the traffic jam. Not doing so now gives you a hefty fine, points on how your license and you will be automatically disqualified from driving for a month. So until the autopilot learns to abide the rules it is impossible to use in these circumstances.

    I find it challenging to find useful data for mileage per kW-hr to make comparisons, but looking at the battery storage capacites it’s around 91 kW-hrs for the Mustang Mach E and 82 kW-hrs for the Model Y as well as Model 3. So for similar efficiency the Ford should go further.
    I have a 2019 Model 3 with a 75 kW-hr battery and a 230 mile drive from my Houston home to the Lafayette, LA supercharger depletes the battery 90%+ going at preferable speeds. Close to cutting it too close, but the trip energy graph really helps to remain confident you won’t be calling a tow truck.
    Love your channel dude, keep up the great work!

      The vehicle also tells you to slow down to make the charger/destination and what % you will arrive with (more and more accurate the closer you are of course). I purposely kept driving fast when going up north in Michigan in the winter because it said I would arrive with 4-5% battery to my destination but my plan was to stop for 10 min at the Supercharger on the way. I let it adjust itself as I kept driving.

    Maybe try to understand that Tesla is using the rated distance as a battery level - instead of amplifying the confusion through your channel 😄 That is why most experience users use percent (%) to have a feeling for how long it can go. With the older Model S you could switch between rated range and estimated range based on driving style. The Mach-e shows the latter.
    What was the watts per miles for the Model Y? Did you say it was 330 wh/mile for the Mach-E? (33 kwh/100miles)
    Also, just use the navigation and energy app, those are more precise than any other EV and my 1300km (one way) trip was amazing in a Model 3 Performance. That we can easily do 120-150 mph on the German autobahn also makes trips a breeze when there is not traffic.

  • @Isamu1013
    @Isamu1013 2 роки тому

    What I do not get with the Tesla Range display is that they are able to show a realistic value but choose not to. In the older Model S and X you were able to choose between rated and typical range. Rated is the same we have now were they estimate the range based on energy remaining and the rated consumption from the wltp.
    Typical used the average consumption on the vehicle though and in turn is much closer to the real range as it adjust to the drivers driving style.
    Btw. the display in % is still typical so that one is pretty accurate.
