A Tribute To Hilaree Nelson | Re-Release of 364 | Rich Roll Podcast

  • This is an incredible conversation about fear, risk resilience, adventure and potential. It’s about balancing the pull of adventure against her responsibilities as a single mom to two boys. It’s about the allure of the outdoors. But mostly, this is an exchange about the virtues of placing yourself outside your comfort zone - and what that can teach us about potential, the preciousness of life, and what it means to be truly alive. Re-released as a tribute to Hilaree, this is episode 364 from 2018. For more, click here 👉🏾bit.ly/richroll364

      It is really sad he’s had two tragedies however risk takers sort of set themselves up for these accidents. I think his first wife was a pilot. So there’s that risk always. Sad but true I will follow his journey here forward.

      @@laurelledubois Thank you for the correction on that point. I thought Jim also perished and was the father of her children. However, it still remains a tragic loss for her children.

      Well, like she said, struggle and difficulties teaches resilency. I see so many women my age sort of lost with grandkids their only focus. Her sons are old enough to be independent since she seems to have prepared them. Tragic, true, but what a great example, and they have others to help them get through life. Americans (US) could use a bit more struggle to deepen our ability to get through obstacles which arise out of the blue. May those in our country who are depressed because they have never learned how to deal, may they discover themselves, and find some peace.

    • @rayray4192
      @rayray4192 Рік тому

      @@naomiroyle9637 bullshit, humans need their parents their entire life. She was addicted to adventure. Her addiction was stronger than her love for her children. When you have children your life is not your own.

      Rich "none of us are promised a tomorrow." True, but you are less likely to see a tomorrow if you're extreme skiing on the world's tallest mountains, regardless of how much you love it. People die and get seriously hurt trying to climb Everest and other mountains. I think of her children. I lost a parent at about the same age they are and I know how difficult that is. This was a risk she did not have to take.

    Virginia Woolf talks about the difference in how women storytell and what details and values are perceived as relevant and important; Just the way Hilaree holds so closely the experience of the dissolution of her team is an example of this difference. I hope her family finds peace and pride. What a marvel of a person. She has an air of Demi Moore about her profile. She's laid a big brick in the path of self-realization through courage for everyone, especially for us guardians of the flame. Beautiful idea to pay tribute, Rich.

    Wow! What an amazing woman, what an amazing life. But, I do what to say something about adrenaline, endorphins and addiction. I understand.
    I grew up in So. California between the waves and the mountains and they both called out to me, sometimes in the same day. I spent he next decade skiing the Rockies, the Wasatch and the Sierras before moving to Hawaii. I traveled the continents alone with a backpack to places that are now off limits to U.S. citizens.
    While surfing with friends, I experienced a [fear] that I’d never, ever felt before having just learned a few days earlier that my wife was pregnant with our first child and that my life was no longer my own. I stopped taking [those] kinds of risk on that day.
    I’ve lost a few risk taker friends along the way. For those of us who are adrenaline junkies, and we are many, something will take us. If it isn’t an avalanche, high speed accident, liver failure, it might be old age. I will make my 70th birthday this time next year. Thank you for listening.

    Well it’s her life, except for the choice to have children, that’s their life as well. I see her as neurotic and self absorbed to an extreme degree. Risk taking is a calculation or its suicide. If it’s calculated then you would include your children. Children in a broken family at that. I watched her old videos and cringed. I wondered if she would tone it down or if she was going to die. I only considered it because I was aware of her kids and situation. Obviously even those close to her couldn’t talk sense into her and now her kids get to live with that selfish , narcissistic choice making. “ she died doing what she loved”, uh so that was what she loved most? Then why have kids? Honestly the society today has suspended ownership of behavior and actions. We can accept her death. We can accept her joy at mountaineering. I don’t accept her choosing to abandon her children. Any more than what I would feel about abandoning mine. To gain a thrill. People have gotten so far away from knowing life that they don’t feel unless it’s extreme. It’s a sickness. You can have 100% of the life feeling right now, it’s not waiting on top of a mountain. She ran from depression and extreme emotional polarity. She ran to the mountains where she could feel the extreme edge. If that’s therapy, you really need to face yourself. It’s like a junkie in so many ways. It’s suicidal, extreme feeling state and separates you from the origin of your pain. That’s not therapy, that’s distraction and diversion. Rip HN

      Speak for yourself. You pointing the finger shouting narcissism is self righteous. Humans have to put themselves first they are ultimately responsible for themselves. Children are abandoned all the time its part of the circle of life. They will be fine. If these feats had no risk then everyone would be doing them. The fact she had children doesn't mean she should sit at home and do nothing.

      Well look around at American culture... 100 million adults+ live very risk-averse lives full of comfort and modern convenience...sitting in air conditioned cars, cubicles, homes. They certainly won't die pushing themselves to the extreme, but probably will die a slow death of diabetes or complacency. Which is the better life to have lived?

He went to Africa while Idi Amin was dictator, two tours in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm and three tour in Afghanistan. He has three Purple Hearts. Never once in his 27 yrs in the military did I ask him to get out. Then after he got out of the military he became a professional motorcycle racer and that pissed me off but it was his passion so I keep my mouth shut… our kids thought he was crazy but they loved watching him and we all cheered him on.

    GD, I didn't know her or even really of her until my Instagram feed blew up with the news. Not going to lie, I'm torn. On one hand it's tragic that she passed away. On the other hand, maybe it's more tragic that the vast majority of humans don't die doing something that they absolutely love.

    Beautiful story. She lived her life to the fullest and died doing what she loved. But does anybody wonder, besides me, how everything she did could have ended up badly, and unfortunately one time it did, and how it would affect the people around her. I guess from someone who is fighting for her life, that would be me, I am fighting hard every day, and always think of my daughter and how this x-ray, bloodwork, doctor's appointments, dealing with my diseases, will affect her life. It's hard to think about it, but I am fighting for my husband and my daughter and me. I guess what I am saying is that I would never take a chance that might be lethal, because of those who I would leave behind. Everyone is allowed to do as they like, but sometimes you have to think of the consequences. I truly am glad she died doing something she loved.
