I saw Mr. Hoffman a few days before he passed. I was having coffee are a shop in Atlanta. He entered the coffeeshop with what appeared to be a script in his hand. He purchased a cup of coffee and appeared to study a script. As I was leaving I stopped by his table and told him how much I enjoyed his work. He was very pleasant. I remember he looked so very sad, almost looking as if he was on the verge of tears. I'll never forget how sad he looked.
Not one addict, as a child wanted to grow up to be an addict. Even when your sober, your addiction is outside doing push ups. Me dealing with chronic pain and remaining sober is the hardest thing I've ever done. I fight the good fight everyday.

Philip's loss really struck home here in his hometown. Phil went to the same high school as my daughter. The Senior Play , Death of a Salesman, in which he starred was a foreshadowing of his incredible talent. He was so kind and when in town to visit his Mom, he always stopped in to meet the Drama Club and give advise and encouragement to the kids. His great success never did away with his humble personality. It is tough to see one of your own snuffed out by drugs. There isn't a day that goes by that our hearts don't think, if only... Rest in Peace ...We miss you.

Adam Wood Look into L.O.R.E.T.A. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I suffer from extreme anxiety and PTSD and after 1 20 minute treatment my anxiety has been reduced. I’ll be taking take 10 more sessions. CBD therapy treats alcohol & drug addiction, anorexia, depression, PTSD and other issues. It’s expensive but worth every dollar. Best of luck to you.

I'm really glad you posted this. I'm outside the U.S. so didn't really get the aftermath. I always blamed the doctor who prescribed opioids after his on set injury the previous year, but obviously that doesn't really tell the story. I took his death hard for some reason. Thank you.

I’ll never get tired of watching this man on screen. I grew up watching him grow famous and feeling like I knew him in some way. Or maybe it felt like he knew what it was like to be me. Probably both. His dying the way he did only made me feel more of a connection. I had only recently gotten out of rehab and had begun using again when I heard the news. I thought he had been clean for years so it was a bit of a shock. Maybe that inner turmoil he let through in his characters is what drew me to love his work, I don’t know but I wish he were here and I wish I could have been a friend to him. I really feel for his family. Thanks for making this.

Addiction mixed in with loneliness is a bad mix. Loneliness can be an intense feeling to feel and deal with especially during separation or a divorce. Daytime everything is great because the day is fulfilled and busy. Come night time after kids and the day came down then it's just you, even though people are in the next room, that feeling is intense. A constant pressure on ones chest and being inside a box closing in on you and it's hard to reach out to talk about it. Drugs will numb that feeling for some.

I've never experienced drug addiction before but have plenty of friends who had to battle this disease and I can only imagine the toll of addiction and loneliness combined together. It could almost be seen as no way out. Loneliness is as bad for me as it was to deal with at first but now combined with shelter in place sux. My days are busy but come night after kids go to bed and things settle down then it's just me. That's when it sinks in. Happy during the day😁, miserable at night. 😒 In time it'll get better, hopefully but I wish for the best dealing with both and if anyone feels this way, I urge them to reach out to someone, anyone who'll listen because sometimes having someone else listening can help out a lot.
It's good to sit with pain let it wash over you live with it accept it will come and go throughout your life never give in to drugs they become worse than the original pain and twice as hard to overcome and that applies to all drugs prescribed or street drugs Getting old helps pain feel less intense getting old and putting others needs before your own especially your childrens. Parents dying young by their own behaviour leave a terrible legacy . Always put your children first every addict I've met and I've known many have huge capacity for self pity .
I knew I'd continue to miss him long after he was gone. I was so right. I miss all his work that will never be seen. I hate that he fell into the addiction trap. Saying it was a waste and a huge loss is an understatement.
My favourite is Arnold of Swarzenegger. He had such a range. He could play common german, american soldier, american hitman, interplanetary trophyhunter, machines, boxers. everything. The marlon brando of our time, as they say in austria.
Dont know why but I was thinking of him today. His raw emotions always carried his characters. Usually people who feel so much in life have to numb those feelings because they lack the tools to manage the pain of humanity on a daily basis. Its just tragic that addiction claims people I see as having the most potential for greatness. They certainly aren’t weak. You just aren’t carrying the same weight.
Seeing stories like his gave me hope and then he died and it scared the hell out of me. Being a recovering heroin addict myself I know I have to be very careful because all it takes is 1 relapse and POOF!! I'm gone. I pray that God helps me stay sober and live a long, successful life, although I do honest to God feel like I won't live a long life. But, it's all in God's hands. RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman

This was the first celeb death that hit me super hard. I will always love his films, I will always love him as an actor and I will always have respect him as a person. It doesn’t matter that he relapsed, he still tried to be better for himself and his family and nothing else should matter - especially to the general public.
He was probably emotionally wounded, recently before his death and probably decades before then. I would have loved to see him do more stuff, I cannot recall a single bad performance from him, always good to excellent.
I have an ex like that. He was so bad with drinking, it came to a point that I wouldn’t ride in a car with him anymore. It’s never easy watching someone do things like that to themselves.

That movie haunts me. I can remember the smell of the air, the temperature of that night when I decided to press play on that movie. It’s burned into my mind. I’ve never had a movie do that to me.
When a person is clean for so long then uses again, two things may happen. 1) Their system can not handle the same amount they used at the time of stopping. Some don't think of this and end up dying from an unintended overdose. 2) When a person is clean for many long years the quality or strength of drugs can drastically change and increase. This too can sadly result in unintended death by accidental overdose. I'm sharing this because I feel it's important to know that not everyone who dies from an overdose was suicidal or knowingly careless. A favorite saying I enjoy is, "Experience is what you get *after* you needed it" This can tragically be true of drug overdose and alcohol poisoning with the person sometimes having a split-second Oh Phuck moment of awareness before dying and never getting to learn and live better from the newly and briefly gained experience. For those who struggle so hard through life I hope there is a Heaven where their spirit is renewed, allowing them peace and joy not found in mortal life. 🙏 🕊 ✨😔

Addiction is not a disease, it's a symptom of deep anxiety. We are not comfortable in our own skin because somewhere deep in our subconscious we know we are not this body, we are something eternal. But our egos can't let go of the finite. This inability to let go is the source of the pain.
I think when an actor is as amazing as he was, it has to be hard taking on these roles and bring that to life...becoming that person then it ends. That has to be dark.
In my humble opinion the mark of a truly great actor is when you can know the actor and or cast but their performance is as such, in that one forgets said actor and becomes enamored in the character and storyline they are portraying. Phillip delivered this in every role he was cast in. An amazing talent. It’s a shame that genius and deep dark psychological problems often are conjoined twins. Both in a battle to cancel the other out. Sadly it seems the darkness gets it way more often than not. He is and will be sorely missed.
A great actor of our times... will always have this perspective no matter what... his personal struggles was nothing compared to brilliance he contributed to the entertainment world. Love him always!!!

Bear in mind that heroin means bliss, nothing matters, all anxiety and worry is gone. All guilt, shame, sense of failure - everything is just fine. Until you need more.

I'm really glad you posted this. I'm outside the U.S. so didn't really get the aftermath. I always blamed the doctor who prescribed opioids after his on set injury the previous year, but obviously that doesn't really tell the story. I took his death hard for some reason. Thank you.

I’ll never get tired of watching this man on screen. I grew up watching him grow famous and feeling like I knew him in some way. Or maybe it felt like he knew what it was like to be me. Probably both. His dying the way he did only made me feel more of a connection. I had only recently gotten out of rehab and had begun using again when I heard the news. I thought he had been clean for years so it was a bit of a shock. Maybe that inner turmoil he let through in his characters is what drew me to love his work, I don’t know but I wish he were here and I wish I could have been a friend to him. I really feel for his family. Thanks for making this.

Addiction mixed in with loneliness is a bad mix. Loneliness can be an intense feeling to feel and deal with especially during separation or a divorce. Daytime everything is great because the day is fulfilled and busy. Come night time after kids and the day came down then it's just you, even though people are in the next room, that feeling is intense. A constant pressure on ones chest and being inside a box closing in on you and it's hard to reach out to talk about it. Drugs will numb that feeling for some.

I've never experienced drug addiction before but have plenty of friends who had to battle this disease and I can only imagine the toll of addiction and loneliness combined together. It could almost be seen as no way out. Loneliness is as bad for me as it was to deal with at first but now combined with shelter in place sux. My days are busy but come night after kids go to bed and things settle down then it's just me. That's when it sinks in. Happy during the day😁, miserable at night. 😒 In time it'll get better, hopefully but I wish for the best dealing with both and if anyone feels this way, I urge them to reach out to someone, anyone who'll listen because sometimes having someone else listening can help out a lot.

It's good to sit with pain let it wash over you live with it accept it will come and go throughout your life never give in to drugs they become worse than the original pain and twice as hard to overcome and that applies to all drugs prescribed or street drugs Getting old helps pain feel less intense getting old and putting others needs before your own especially your childrens. Parents dying young by their own behaviour leave a terrible legacy . Always put your children first every addict I've met and I've known many have huge capacity for self pity .

Dont know why but I was thinking of him today. His raw emotions always carried his characters. Usually people who feel so much in life have to numb those feelings because they lack the tools to manage the pain of humanity on a daily basis. Its just tragic that addiction claims people I see as having the most potential for greatness. They certainly aren’t weak. You just aren’t carrying the same weight.

Seeing stories like his gave me hope and then he died and it scared the hell out of me. Being a recovering heroin addict myself I know I have to be very careful because all it takes is 1 relapse and POOF!! I'm gone. I pray that God helps me stay sober and live a long, successful life, although I do honest to God feel like I won't live a long life. But, it's all in God's hands. RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman

This was the first celeb death that hit me super hard. I will always love his films, I will always love him as an actor and I will always have respect him as a person. It doesn’t matter that he relapsed, he still tried to be better for himself and his family and nothing else should matter - especially to the general public.

He was probably emotionally wounded, recently before his death and probably decades before then. I would have loved to see him do more stuff, I cannot recall a single bad performance from him, always good to excellent.
I have an ex like that. He was so bad with drinking, it came to a point that I wouldn’t ride in a car with him anymore. It’s never easy watching someone do things like that to themselves.

Tone is weirdly dispassionate but I appreciate the added insight into his addiction. When a celebrity falls it can be a stark reminder that an addict / alcoholic will always be powerless no matter the length of sobriety or the heights of achievement they reach.
a rare kind of actor that can be labelled a true artist, Synecdoche New York is the greatest movie ever made in my opinion, it's a work of art, I can't think of any other actor that could've played such a convincing part, it really is master class acting.
That movie haunts me. I can remember the smell of the air, the temperature of that night when I decided to press play on that movie. It’s burned into my mind. I’ve never had a movie do that to me.
When a person is clean for so long then uses again, two things may happen.
1) Their system can not handle the same amount they used at the time of stopping. Some don't think of this and end up dying from an unintended overdose.
2) When a person is clean for many long years the quality or strength of drugs can drastically change and increase. This too can sadly result in unintended death by accidental overdose.
I'm sharing this because I feel it's important to know that not everyone who dies from an overdose was suicidal or knowingly careless.
A favorite saying I enjoy is,
"Experience is what you get *after* you needed it"
This can tragically be true of drug overdose and alcohol poisoning with the person sometimes having a split-second Oh Phuck moment of awareness before dying and never getting to learn and live better from the newly and briefly gained experience.
For those who struggle so hard through life I hope there is a Heaven where their spirit is renewed, allowing them peace and joy not found in mortal life.

One of the best onscreen performances I've ever seen by any actor was Hoffman in 'Flawless'. He was incredible, he eclipsed DeNiro in every scene.

One of the best actors of his generation. What Mimi O'Donnell said about addiction always lurking beneath the surface is so true. Its a lifelong battle, which the addict has to win one battle at a time. But they never win the war. What stirs the creativity in the performing life can play hell when they're trying just to live their regular lives. Hoffman really was a superb actor.
For every movie in which he appeared it is his enthusiastic "Dusty" in Twister (1996) that I keep going back to.

In other words he was as classy a guy as we thought he was, was grappling with his demons, and eventually lost his life to them. I can think of a whole string of musicians who I could say the same about.

Addiction is not a disease, it's a symptom of deep anxiety. We are not comfortable in our own skin because somewhere deep in our subconscious we know we are not this body, we are something eternal. But our egos can't let go of the finite. This inability to let go is the source of the pain.
I think when an actor is as amazing as he was, it has to be hard taking on these roles and bring that to life...becoming that person then it ends. That has to be dark.
In my humble opinion the mark of a truly great actor is when you can know the actor and or cast but their performance is as such, in that one forgets said actor and becomes enamored in the character and storyline they are portraying. Phillip delivered this in every role he was cast in. An amazing talent. It’s a shame that genius and deep dark psychological problems often are conjoined twins. Both in a battle to cancel the other out. Sadly it seems the darkness gets it way more often than not. He is and will be sorely missed.
A great actor of our times... will always have this perspective no matter what... his personal struggles was nothing compared to brilliance he contributed to the entertainment world. Love him always!!!
