  • Part 3 of 3: At high camp the team falls apart from the physical, mental, and emotional strain of the expedition. O'Neill talks about how, in winds of 75 miles an hour and with only three days of food left, an argument erupts between the team members over who should attempt the summit and who should be left behind.

The quest to climb Hkakabo Razi in the remote area of northern Myanmar was conceived by Hilaree O'Neill and Mark Jenkins and their yearning for an "anti-Everest" expedition. In the fall of 2014, Hilaree O'Neill, the expedition leader, and Mark Jenkins, Cory Richards, Renan Ozturk, and Emily Harrington set out to climb this formidable peak and determine whether it is the highest peak in Southeast Asia by standing on top with a GPS. What followed was a demanding journey full of setbacks that would push these five climbers to their limits emotionally, physically, and mentally. Hear Hilaree O'Neill talk about this epic expedition and being taken to "the point of no return."

Very saddened to hear the news. She was part of an avalanche awareness foundation established to educate mountaineers about the dangers and survival tips regarding avalanches. She perished in an avalanche on Mansalu, after a 5,900' fall, fortunately she was recovered.
R.I.P. amazing & beautiful mountaineer who embraced all the mountains had to offer, even if it meant a premature passing 🌿

Don't let the fear of failure stop you. Great words. Well done Hilaree and the team.

You all are amazing wonderful and inspiring. First of all, I am glad all of you made it alive. Haliree you are great, I cant even imagine what you had to deal with other than snakes, bugs, porters and permit. (Getting permit should have been easier.) Emily is so funny and I like how she cooked. I can see this trip is hard for her. I hope she loves this experience and remembers. Mark's decision to not climb to the summit was a heart breaking espically when you are seeing it 😢 I felt for him. Anyway you all did so amazingly I am proud of you all. I was born in Burma, Kachin State and I hope one day there are more supports from government and local organizations and easier to climb.

"It was really surreal" Interesting phrase, I have no idea what it means.

It means something that doesn't seem real at the time. Like taking a shower for the first time in 40 days after you have been detached from society and "modern comforts" that taking a shower doesn't seems real it almost like a dream rather than reality.

it was a sexist decision - I felt so angry watching these 3 men making decisions for the 2 of you. They were awful.

I believe they wanted to reach the peak more than anything/anyone after all of the earlier ordeal.
For that, they were already on the absolute limit of food shortage.
Being their position i trust they made a hard decision but safer for everyone.
