I'm new to painting, but one of the things I realized while trying to memorize the color wheel and complementary colors, is that you don't need to. When you have a color, like purple for example, the complementary color is the primary color that wasn't used. Blue and Red make purple, so yellow is the complementary color. Orange is yellow and red, so blue is the complementary color. etc. It simplified things after that occurred to me. I also discovered by experimenting that mixing the complementary color into the paint usually turns the paint grey.
This was so interesting! I’m always fascinated by your ability to recreate reality with acrylic and oils. And aaawwww you mentioned my class ahhhh thank you so much 💕 your moves are amazing 😂 also I’m pretty sure it was you that I learned the “complimentary colors to mute” technique from a long time ago. So thank you for that!
Really nice transformation of the lamppost over snow painting. I love how you brought out more depth beneath the trees and enhanced the structure of the snow covered branches.
I don't know what I enjoy more haha your art or your humour..you keep me so entertained and you really do inspire me..the biggest thing you made me realize is that I'm not alone as an artist. Thank you for being so awesome.
Also fun to know if you use a split primary colors then you can get more accurate colors and a wider range without having to buy lots of other specific colors. You only need two reds two blues and two yellows and a white. You also get brighter secondary colors
That’s a good tip. What two shades of blue red and yellow would you suggest? I’m sure you’re referring to a warm and cool tone of each but which ones specifically? I’m new to all of this
You're a very clever woman! Your quirky intro to keep us watching during the sponsor announcement made me smile.....wanted to just skip ahead but couldn't go past your amusing silliness. Great learning tool to colour match on photos. Saw you do this in an earlier video and had to try it, made a big difference to compare what colour I think I see and what it really is. A BIG thanks for the incredibly simple but amazingiy useful idea of using a photo frame with the neutral brown backing under glass as a palette!! I literally have a dozen different types of palette and your idea has turned into the most eminently sensible option I've ever come across!! LOVE your channel, thanks for what you do!
The second I finished this video, i wanted to paint a picture on my phone because I felt inspired but only for a short time. That's why I wanted to paint right away...but I wanted to watch more videos.... then I lost my confidence and inspiration to paint...but now I got it back! Love you, Robin!!! :) ♡♡♡ 😘🤩😂😁
A really helpful and professional video on some of the major basics of painting. Much apprechiated indeed! And your intro with the silly background clips is hilarious and very entertaining. A small headsup, if you are not aware of this already: Your next post on instgram will be number 500! Can't wait to see some updates on the portrait. Hope you get well soon and can enjoy some of the pre-Christmas period of the year :)
THANK YOU! I am trying to learn the basics but a lot of videos are either too basic or too advanced. This really helps me to learn and experiment with an existing image as a reference point. Can’t wait to watch more of your videos!
You are like the most adorable, well-spoken and talented teacher ever, lol, and I mean that in a strictly platonic way as I am in fact gay. All of your descriptions are incredibly helpful and always seem to touch on things I’ve been unclear about before. Thank you for your wonderful UA-cam videos, and positive, friendly personality!
I am loving the videos you're putting out! I can tell you put a lot of work into them, and they're super helpful. Now if I can just get the nerve to mix complementary colours into my paint, I'll be in good shape XD. Hope you feel better soon!
Love your videos... they are inspiring as I teach myself drawing and painting... I wanted to share that my favorite way of color matching is to use a small card with a hole punch - it's actually a hole punch in the shape of a Christmas tree; I paint over the punched tree and surrounding area and then place that over the photograph to check the color. thank you for sharing your journey - I always learn from your videos.
That's smth i learnt from your videos, those that ive seen so far, like watching you mix colours and painting on the side of your photograph, it's really helpful and useful, thank you : )
I love your attitude and communication style. You do a great job of keeping the content moving and super relevant. The hacks are awesome, too. I just found you today and this is my 4th video (yes, I FER SURE subscribed).
This is such a helpful video and you are so knowledgable! It is extremely helpful and I cannot thank you enough! Please star doing full length tutorials!
for making nice blacks of different temperatures, burnt umber & ultramarine blue make a lovely black! more burnt umber for a warmer black, and m or ultramarine for a cooler black.
Omg I love u and ur art so much... I have been watching u for over a year and seeing u grow and change has been amazing.... hoping to buy a paining from u soon!! ❤️❤️
Very good teaching mode, understandable and concise for all to understand. Thanks for sharing your expertise I am sure if you wanted to you could be teaching SkillShare classes if that were your desire! Have a lovely day.
I find using a light box for transfers usually speeds up the process so I can jump into the process but with thicker canvas or boards ive found the pastel technique is very Ryan effective and useful
I love your work and videos they are always inspiring me to paint and work harder at being a better artist. I only found you recently and I am that glad I did. I would love to be able to meet you some day, thank you for all of your hard work and for inspiring me to keep going.
Do you think you could talk about, not only how to document it but preserve the actual physical pieces of work without them getting damaged. Paining are a bit easier but I have charcoal and pastel and other drawing that I don’t know how to keep without them getting a lot of damage over a longer period of time. Thank you! Your videos are supper helpful and entertaining!
Very useful video! I haven’t done the painting directly on top of the photograph one maybe I will! Colour relativity and theory is definitely and endlessly complex and fascinating subject all artists working in colour study intentionally or subconsciously! I also recommend to everyone this book; Color and Light ( a guide for the realist painter) by James Gurney. Very comprehensive and useful tome! Also I advise much practice and doing paper tests to see how different materials actually react and work on your different papers! Keep up the great content thanks!
Robin you are Wonderful! Amazed with your talent.💗 Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and sensitivity with us so generously!🌞🌈 May i just suggest something regarding the colour matching tecnhique... that i find could be quite helpful, that is placing a thin glass over the photo.
ROBIN HOW DID YOU DO THAT literally 30 seconds ago i thought how cool would it be if you had a video like this WHAT THE ACTUAL F (thankyouthank youthankyouthankyouthankyouthank you)
Great video! I had to laugh when I saw the lamp-post because I’m reading The Chronicles of Narnia for my first time with a friend. Your painting pretty much looks like I think the Narnia lamp-post would.
I have a question. When you put paint thinner into your silicoil jar. Do you empty it out after every painting session? Or do you keep using the same thinner for a while?
You shouldn't ever have to dump your spirits/thinner/gamsol. And you shouldn't ever dump that stuff down a drain, it'll cause serious damage. If you have to get rid of it, dispose of it through the proper channels. But you can continue to reuse the same spirits until it's all evaporated. Whatever paint residue gets stuck in your silicoil jar will fall to the bottom and you'll have clean spirits to use for your next session. If you ever want to clean out the residue just wait for it to all fall to the bottom of the jar then carefully pour out the clean spirits into another jar. Then you can wipe out the leftover paint residues with a paper towel. Then just pour your clean spirits back into your silicoil.
I always loved your snowy light picture. I’m pretty sure I snuck into your house when you were out of town one time to show my mom it when she came to visit... 😬😂 I mean, I’m pretty sure I had your permission though... 😂
I just look at what I see, like I did when I was younger, trying to also understand why by what Ive learned and it really helps me look like Im a pro at colors apparently lol
Ive heard other painters suggest to use cyan, mustard yellow and magenta rather than the standard red, blue, yellow O: What is the reasoning to use the standard rby over cymk and vice versus?
I'm a tetrachromat, so I struggle pretty hard with color matching sometimes, because they just don't make the paints for the colors I see. (Tetrachromats see four primary colors instead of three, I'll let you figure out that one...)
Hello , I have a question if anyone could help ! I work with acrylics all the time and the paint tend to dry suuuuper fast I have to keep mixing colors everytime I wanna paint something , and you know , sometimes I can't really get the same color I got before , is there a way to stop the paint from drying up as quickly?
I know that Acrylic dry's quickly but how do you reconcile that acrylics dry about 20% darker? I will stand by my previous comment that you present this information so very well! and we can all learn from you and this video!

low and slow, thanks a lot 💜

I’ve been watching your channel for a long time and you’ve helped my art so much 💕

Your videos are always so helpful! I definitely need to put some of these exercises into my routine! Cant wait for the next video also!
I am loving the videos you're putting out! I can tell you put a lot of work into them, and they're super helpful. Now if I can just get the nerve to mix complementary colours into my paint, I'll be in good shape XD. Hope you feel better soon!

Dang, you've always got some good moves. I'm just glad you didn't fall of that table and break your arm before sharing these neat tips.
Id love to see more videos on color theory if you have any more tips/teachings! Im like terrified of color but your tips made it a lot less scary
That was extremely helpful! Thanks!
Really nice video, Robin!

Robin you are Wonderful! Amazed with your talent.💗

The lamppost is cool.
ROBIN HOW DID YOU DO THAT
literally 30 seconds ago i thought how cool would it be if you had a video like this
WHAT THE ACTUAL F
(thankyouthank youthankyouthankyouthankyouthank you)
Yay!! I’m so sorry you still don’t feel well. But I’m excited to up my realism game. Thanks much!
When skillshare is sponsoring you... but you're also putting them out of business because you out here teaching us all the skills we'll ever need!
Thank you so much for this video! Its so helpful✨
Love this
Thank you for that great video Robin.
Great video! I had to laugh when I saw the lamp-post because I’m reading The Chronicles of Narnia for my first time with a friend. Your painting pretty much looks like I think the Narnia lamp-post would.
What are the pros of swatching and color matching on a photo vs a print on a paper?
Thanks for being so hilarious and informative with your vids! (I needed both aspects!) :D
I always skip when youtubers promote their sponsors but you just made it impossible to do so! hilarious! 🤣
The lamppost image is really pretty, looks very realistic
I've had that same piano writing book for YEARS. Glad to see I'm not the only one :P
Love your videos. Thanks for amazing tips and for make me always laugh a lot!
Thank u so much this is really helpful
Omg!!!!! I needed this so bad!! Im finally early!! Im saying random things, ok
Could you do a video on all your favorite supplies for each medium? I’m getting into painting
This may seem dumb, but what do you do with oil paintings while they are drying ?
Janey Cress on the palette or canvas
@@succ1r did you even read the question? 😂
Like, when you’re done with the painting
Cryptic.Cookie o wait😅😅
Janey Cress put it somewhere where it hopefully won't be disturbed and wait till it dries.
Hi Robin, where did you purchase your paint palette?
0:14 Genius way to make people watch the full sponsor minute, lol
Do you make prints of your artwork? If so, what is your process? What materials do you usr?
I always loved your snowy light picture. I’m pretty sure I snuck into your house when you were out of town one time to show my mom it when she came to visit... 😬😂
I mean, I’m pretty sure I had your permission though... 😂
I just look at what I see, like I did when I was younger, trying to also understand why by what Ive learned and it really helps me look like Im a pro at colors apparently lol
You should paint in real time someday, so we can learn how to real mixing, brush tecnics, etc 🌻
Ive heard other painters suggest to use cyan, mustard yellow and magenta rather than the standard red, blue, yellow O:
What is the reasoning to use the standard rby over cymk and vice versus?
What I kind of paint do you use? It would be really helpful if you told me
Superrrrr Helpful Thx Robin
you didn't even watch it it is twelve minutes and it was posted like 5 minutes ago
Question: when you are painting over a picture, what kind/ texture paper do you normally use?
Is there a link for doing a transfer drawing?
where is the link of learning how to do a transfer drawing?
I'm a tetrachromat, so I struggle pretty hard with color matching sometimes, because they just don't make the paints for the colors I see. (Tetrachromats see four primary colors instead of three, I'll let you figure out that one...)

Awsome Video
Thank you for being hilarious during your ad
I know that Acrylic dry's quickly but how do you reconcile that acrylics dry about 20% darker? I will stand by my previous comment that you present this information so very well! and we can all learn from you and this video!
Good way to get people not to skip the advertisement. Be a goofball while you talk about it
how would one seal the painted photo?
