May I suggest something.... would you do a video on how to read a reference photo...before starting a painting...that will give a road map for the painting? Like...where is the focal point, what values are dominant ...far to distance objects in the reference...etc

    • @basscanon6687
      @basscanon6687 3 роки тому +45

i would suggest studying more about composition, making a grid, and something called an "underpainting"

You will need to study the principles so you can design without reference :D reference is faster tho

you should check out Ian Roberts' channel too. he's great for breaking down composition and photo references. from one photo, 10 different artists might have each a different compositions because each one decides their own crop and focal point, and even if they have a similar comp, they'll have different ways/colours/value structures to approaching the piece.

This video doesn't touch on it but most art schools teach you to see value first before you see color. The first 2 years of my art school was focused on seeing value of blacks and whites in terms of graphite and charcoal drawings (drawing/drawing theory). Because drawing is not the same as painting you spend another 3-6 months learning to paint black and white before you start to use color. When you do start to use color you don't just jump into 12 colors....you start with one along with a black and a white. We did many monochromatic paintings. Then you move up to complements plus a black and white. You slowly work your way up to 3 (primaries/triadic) colors and gradually using more and more colors by the time you finish art school you have mastered 8-10 different colors along with all the values with black and white. Everybody hates to work and they all want to easy way out. If you learn slowly by taking one color at a time and doing many painting with each plus black and white you will not only learn color theory but also value which is unfortunately lacking in many amateur paintings. It's called practice makes perfect. Start simple and work towards complex. Doing this any other way will take more time and cause more confusion and will slow your growth as an artist.

Thank you so much for this video! I wish my father, who died 3 years ago, could see this... He loved to paint, but he lacked formal education and his biggest difficultly was mixing colors to get the color he needed. I tried helping him by searching for good educational videos or books, but I never found something as good as your lesson here. At least I will now be better at mixing colors and maybe he will see me from heaven and be glad I'm doing it well...

@@cynthiamarston2208 Florent said he was working on a color theory course, I believe it was last year, so I had been saving up - didn't know the price until he released it. I'm not a portrait painter so his other course wouldn't offer me as much help as this one, which has been a huge sticking point in my work. I live near an accredited college that offers fine art classes, but the cost of their "introductory" course is in the thousands. By comparison, this course is much more cost effective for what I need, which is color. Cynthia you can email Florent directly and ask him about your concerns and best options for what your painting needs are in your art journey. I wasted my life for one hour in some other dudes video on mixing colours where explaintions were vague and his colours did not look as described ( like his red looked orange, purpal looked brown) and all the mixing just looked muddy overall. Your presentation is amazingly clear on every level, explaination, visual and examples you use. Your articulation is impeccable. Thank you for being such an incredible teacher. Just purchased your course, this is exactly what I've been hunting for, for YEARS. Something about the traditional color wheel never quite clicked for me but every resource I could find (even by some super talented artists I really admire) was teaching everything based on this color wheel. I thought I was just a hopeless case for not understanding. This video alone made so many things click, especially the bit about true complementary colors. I can't wait to dive into the course material. Thanks for making this :D

Yes, I have been looking for a color wheel like this for over a year now. I have noticed many adults as well try to correct me because they are professional and I am not: they tell me I have the wrong theory, but I have researched and have learned otherwise. Their experience allows them to make better images than me, but that doesn't always mean they are correct, but generally, they are correct. This is a great video to show the artist in my life. I'm about to be 16 btw,, ^^ just so you know what I mean by adults. I love color, but I lack experience because although I understand it, I haven't made a body to brain connection with color. I have been scared to commit and waste art material, I always have to have double because I fear imperfection and wasting material: I'm afraid I can't get materials being where I come from. Although this is no longer true, it's been holding me back and left me less inspired. But I am still passionate.
Edit: So I lack color confidence, illustration confidence in general, and color intuition.
Please help! I want to improve ^^

    Hello Again,
This is an absolutely fundamental struggle for artists... The problem of "memorization" of a limited colour wheel has been the precise reason why I usually tend to only draw or use inks for creating. There is wave after wave of terrible advice out there...artists get frustrated and lost in this struggle. Your very "balanced and thoughtful" approach still allows for subtleties. There is so much more information in your approach. I think likening colours to musical notes was perfect....it gives one a less chaotic path to colour. Thankful for your work, and teaching...your work, I feel will be far reaching over time and use. Very, very thoughtful and thankfully "clear" explanations. As always, I wish you well. Stay safe and thank you again!!!

Thank you for this video! This is the most comprehensive explanation of why having just 3 primary colors doesn't work for painting. When I teach painting I always tell my students to buy at least 6 colors, plus white & black: cadmium red, magenta (quinacridone), yellow, cyan, ultramarine blue, and phthalo green. You can get pretty much any color mixed with those 6, plus white & black.

Just 4 minutes in, and just wanted to say that while colour combinations ARE subjective, You'd still need to learn how everything harmonizes together.
I'm a musician myself in a heavy, dissonant niché genre of music. But I can only make the dissonant notes work tastefully if I actually know what I'm doing.
Still, Indeed it is subjective wether the music is nice to a person.
But you gotta learn the basic rules to break free of them.

And altough I'm interested in the course, i'd like to know if it can be applied to airbrush painting? I assume it can, since it's color bound and not medium bound.. But i'd like to be sure. Greets Dietrr

Coming back to finish watching this later and hopefully download the poster!!!! This is so great. I’ve always disliked the traditional color theory, or really lack of.

I came here to see if you consider the primaries RYB or CMY you didn't disappoint. You explain it exactly how I do. "if you think RYB are primaries, then make magenta and cyan from them"
You make people figure it out on their own. It's very hard to accept what you've been taught for decades was a lie.

Thanks Florent! Believe it or not, but Istill have to 'argue' about what true primaries ( in subtractive system..) actually are, even on the Fine Art degree program, in scotland. They still only mention the traditional 'painters' colour wheel, and hypnotise themselves and the students into believing that the muddy thing they get from mixing blue and red every time is actually purple/ violet....

Can't believe I've never seen this video before. Bravo! Best color theory lesson I've seen on UA-cam. Thank you good sir! I wonder if this color wheel you've created works the same with watercolor?

While following the test for retinal persistence and complimentary colours. I got slightly different results after looking at the dot for 10 seconds, and I did it about a half a dozen times to be sure.
I got the same for the first two sets of colours, which was the inverted cyan (top) and red (bottom), and magenta (top) green (bottom). But for the third set i got orange at the top and purple on the bottom.
Is there something wrong with my perception ? 🤯
It has really thrown me off 😅

This is gold!! I have watched several colour theory videos but everything went over my head and I couldn't put any of theories into practice. But this hits different!! This is practical. Thank you for making this.

In my opinion- colour theory is an essential foundation that should not be skipped, the subjective nature of colour shows up because everyone's vision is slightly different. But the principles of the emotional language stay the same.
For me, I know that when I close just one eye, I see cooler tones through my left eye, and warmer tones through my right, so the colours I pick will be different to yours even If I follow colour theory religiously. And yet the atmosphere and emotion stay the same through everyone's eye.
Colour is a contextual language and the worst thing you can do is get stuck in the symbolic ideal that makes you think *red is evil and blue is good*. The only thing you should be concerned with is how the colour looks through *your* eye relative to only your feelings.
    - learn the chords
    - use those chords to make whatever sounds good to you

idk about this guide on how to make music. seems iffy. (I'm kidding) I think because I use watercolor, I color things very differently and ended up getting a pure pigment set to try to not buy 1 of each color in every brand. I noticed a trend in certain vibes of color in digital art also.

The test around 13:20 give me a result that is more of a between what you say and the classic completary, the red gived me a cyan I think not exactly the same, didnt' see a sifference between the two but the the cyan didnt gi e me same red so.. it was a slightly orange red and very vibrant (like if my perception would give a between, what I mean is classic complementary would told us that cyan is a vibrant bluish turquoise so complentary would be a vibrant redish orange, and what you say is red, I had something between, a red that was very slighly orange and vibrant but very slighlty. Same result for the blue and yellow, or even more prononciate because this time I seen the difference in both colors, the blue gived me a very slighly orangish yellow and the yellow gived me a bluish purple, as we mixed both complementaries, the purple that we tought us that was yellow complementary and the blue that was on the screen with the yellow.
As for the red that gi ed me a cyan I didnt really see a difference for the green and the magenta, or maybe a bery little like if the green were very slightly blue and the magenta v.slightly red.
(I did the test 4 times to be sure and to watch all colors)
I already seen this video and the first time also I had something like this (I also comented, I think my comment is still here)
My conclusion, either it's more of a between the two or everyones perception of colors, complementarys etc are not exactly the same.
Do someone else had as me a kind of between, the cyan giving a vibrant veeery slighly orange RED and the blue giving a yellow that a liiitle bit orange, the yellow gives a blue that sliiightly purple etc ?
    Or am I an alien.. ?? 😂

Your presentation is wonderful and I want to hear what you have to say. Your background music is ok in the description of your color wheel until it is too loud and conflicts. I wish this could be fixed. But otherwise I fully understand!!! And you made something to relate to the other missing colors. Why was this not done before. You're a genius!

I actually liked the video and I think you’re very talented, but I tried to download the for free poster you mentioned but everything on the link is to purchase, and I understand you gotta sale as well but you if you promote something “for free” you should actually give it (and make it easy to find it) not to make it for free after passing a labyrinth of selling strategies.

This makes sense for traditional, for digital the only way to utilize it similarly and consistently is by use of on screen mixing with a digital oil brush if I am correct?

Great video, and yes, sometimes "anything goes" but more often than not it is just an excuse for mediocrity, think of the worst from De Kooning, that´s not someone who knows his color, that´s a mess.

If you red my comment you'll see that for me this green and this magenta ren't exactly opposite but there are very near so eventually the yellow give a more purple color that the blue and on your wheel I see that yellow isnt opposite to this blue but to a more purple blue, perfect ! But red and cyan, no, at least for me, in my perception, as I said in my many comments, with cyan the red is a bit orange and with the red the cyan is a bit green. Now your wheel has a correction for yellow amd blue but I think it also needa one for red and cyan, btw we can clearly (yes clearly, sorry, I really don't want to be harsh, and you seem to be a cool guy) see that at some part of the wheel the gradient is very slight and other very hard, the distance between red amd orange is too big for example and in the yellows the gradient are very hard, we go very quickly from a tint to another, when in the reds, the blues, it is very progressive.. I think it should be verification to see if something's wrong. If you want (answer) I can watch more precisely and try to figure what modification to like this you can try it to see what it does.
